Will Sanju Samson Play In Asia Cup 2025

Will Sanju Samson Play In Asia Cup 2025: Few cricketers in India over the past decade have polarized opinions, fans, experts, and even team management as Sanju Samson has when it comes to T20 cricket.

He is one of the most talented batsmen India have had this century, but his inconsistency has belied his capabilities, leaving everyone wanting for more.

For a decade, Samson has treaded a similar theme in the IPL: he starts the tournament with a bang, smashing a couple of jaw-dropping knocks, but his season fades out as it moves forward. For a long time, he also failed to capitalize on his chances in the national side.

The Kerala cricketer made his T20I debut in 2015, but in 10 years, he’s featured in only 42 T20Is, 18 of which have come since the start of 2024. That is, about 42 percent of his T20I appearances have come in the last 20 months.

Last year, it seemed Sanju Samson had finally stood up to his talent, ability, and faith from the selectors and management as he went on a century-hitting spree: in a space of five innings against Bangladesh (at home) and South Africa (away), Samson bludgeoned three centuries, two of them at strike rates of over 200. His three hundreds are the third-most by an Indian batsman in T20I cricket.

However, 2025 has been filled with inconsistency for Samson. He managed only 51 runs across five home T20Is against England, where he was troubled significantly by the extra pace and bounce of England speedsters. In the IPL, he scored only 285 runs at a strike rate of 140 with only one half-century to his name in nine innings.

More bad news came for Samson in the Asia Cup squad announcement: while he is part of the squad, the selectors and team management welcomed back Shubman Gill in the T20I setup and also appointed him as the vice-captain.

Will Sanju Samson Play In Asia Cup 2025?

With Gill returning as the vice-captain and Abhishek Sharma being in great form—Abhishek is also a left-handed all-rounder—Sanju Samson is likely to be dropped from the XI in India’s first Asia Cup XI.

The wicket-keeper role is now likely to go to Jitesh Sharma, who was in terrific form as a finisher for RCB in the IPL 2025.

As he has done for his entire career, Samson will once again have to sit on the bench and wait for his opportunity in the national side.
