ORLANDO, Fla. – While the main focus this offseason has been on improving the offense, the Pirates†first free agent signing is instead addressing a key need in the bullpen.

According to a source, the club is in agreement with two-time All-Star Gregory Soto on a one-year, $7.75 million deal, pending a physical. The club has not confirmed the deal.

Soto, 30, gives the Pirates not only a much-needed extra leverage arm, but also the southpaw the bullpen was lacking.

Soto is coming off a campaign where he went 1-5 with a 4.18 ERA over 70 games, totaling 60 1/3 innings for the Orioles and Mets. While his ERA has been north of 4.00 the last three seasons after posting back-to-back All-Star campaigns in 2021 and 2022, most of his peripherals graded out nicely. That included holding hitters to a 4% barrel rate – which put him in the 97th percentile of pitchers – a 31.5% chase rate and 29.9% whiff rate. That yielded 70 strikeouts and a healthy 25.1% strikeout rate.

He did have some pronounced hand splits in 2025, though. Right-handed batters had an .801 OPS against him last season, while left-handers hit .192 with a .549 OPS.

When Soto clicks, he pitches off of his sinker that sits in the mid- to upper-90s and his wipeout slider, which had a 45.5% whiff rate. Heâ€ll also mix in a four-seam fastball and a sweeper. Batters hit .314 off the sinker this year, but that average was just .200 in 2023. The pitch profiles similarly in terms of movement, but it is a tick slower, going from an average of 98.1 mph to 96.8 mph.

Missing out on Kyle Schwarber opened up the Pirates again on the free agent market, and while upgrading the offense is the greatest priority, adding a lefty to the mix was important as well. The bullpenâ€s potential leverage arms consist of Dennis Santana, Isaac Mattson and Justin Lawrence, all of whom are right-handed, and Soto gives the club someone who can manage lefties. The Pirates selected the contract of lefty reliever Tyler Samaniego earlier this winter, but included him as part of a trade with the Red Sox for Jhostynxon Garcia.

The Pirates†bullpen is expected to look different in 2026 than it did at the start of 2025. Gone are the Opening Day de facto closer and setup man, David Bednar and Colin Holderman. Reliever prospects Brandan Bidois and Ryan Harbin have had their contract selected and been added to the roster. The backend of the bullpen is potentially still in flux, but Soto should figure to be part of that mix.

The Pirates†roster is currently at 39 players. Sotoâ€s contract is not official, meaning the club can still potentially select a player in Wednesdayâ€s Rule 5 Draft.

The Edwin Diaz news even caught Devin Williams by surprise.

The newly signed reliever expected the Mets to be able to retain their star closer in free agency, pairing them to form a dynamic one-two punch at the backend of the bullpen.

However, as things have played out, Diaz ended up taking slightly more money to join the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers on a three-year pact on Tuesday.

Williams will now instead be handed the mighty tall task of filling the huge void left behind in the backend of New Yorkâ€s bullpen following Diazâ€s departure.

While the 31-year-old is coming off a bit of an up-and-down campaign with the Yankees, David Stearns voiced his confidence in him taking over the role.

“Weâ€re very comfortable with that,†Stearns said. “Iâ€ve seen Devin perform at a very high level for a long time. I have full confidence that he can be one of the best relievers in baseball. I think heâ€s very motivated to do that, and Iâ€m looking forward to watching that.â€

Though Williams is receiving the first shot with not many other experienced options on the roster as currently constructed, he knows heâ€ll still have to go out and earn the role.

Whether he ends up with the ball in the eighth or ninth, heâ€s taking the same approach.

“Iâ€ve always looked at it as itâ€s the same job,†Williams said on SNYâ€s Mets Hot Stove from the Winter Meetings on Tuesday. “Youâ€re going out there to get three outs, five outs, whatever it may be — just whatever the team needs you to do.â€

Stearns wouldnâ€t reveal if the team was still in the market for another backend bullpen piece, but he did say theyâ€ll continue to build the bullpen in numerous ways.

Robert Suarez and Pete Fairbanks are two of the top relievers remaining on the market.

The MLB draft lottery has officially set the order for the 2026 draft, and this year the White Sox were the big winners by securing the No. 1 overall pick.Â

The Pirates were among the favorites to pick inside the first six and had the third-best odds at 10%, but they slipped a few spots and will pick fifth overall. The Giants, meanwhile, were one of the biggest winners of this yearâ€s lottery, moving up from 15th to fourth overall.Â

For each of these teams, picking at the top of what looks to be a strong 2026 draft class is a great sign. But there are also implications for where theyâ€ll be picking a year later in the 2027 draft.

MLBâ€s lottery rules prevent teams from picking year after year in the lottery, with different regulations depending on the revenue sharing status of the team. Teams that receive revenue-sharing money are ineligible for picking in the lottery in three consecutive drafts, while teams that pay into revenue sharing are prohibited from picking in back-to-back lotteries.Â

Itâ€s this rule that prevented the Rockies, Nationals and Angels from being lottery-eligible this year.Â

The White Sox and Giants are both big-market clubs that pay into revenue sharing. And since they have a 2026 lottery pick, they wonâ€t be able to have one again in 2027.Â

The Pirates, meanwhile, are a small-market organization that receives revenue sharing. They had the sixth-overall pick in the 2025 draft and will now have the sixth-overall pick once again for 2026. As such, they will be ineligible for a lottery pick in 2027.

The earliest any of these three teams will be able to pick in the 2027 draft is 10th overall. The selection order among them will depend on their win-loss records in the 2026 season.Â

PASADENA, Calif. — Shohei Ohtani is catching up with more legends.

The baseball superstar ends 2025 by winning The Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for the fourth time, tying Lance Armstrong, LeBron James and Tiger Woods for most among male honorees.

“Receiving this award multiple times is something truly special,” Ohtani said in Japanese in an exclusive interview with the AP.

Ohtani received 29 of 47 votes in balloting among sports journalists from the AP and its members after his two-way dominance culminated in a repeat World Series title for his Los Angeles Dodgers — delivering perhaps the greatest single-game individual performance in sports history along the way. He previously won the award in 2024, his first season with the Dodgers, and in 2023 and 2021, when he was with the Los Angeles Angels.

The AP honor has been given out since 1931. Multisport standout Babe Didrikson Zaharias won six times over the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, the most by a man or woman.

The ultracompetitive Ohtani’s latest win broke a tie with Michael Jordan, who along with Woods, he followed while growing up in Japan.

“Last year, I said I wanted to win this award again, and I will work hard so that I can win it again next year as well,” he said.

Swedish-American pole vaulter Armand Duplantis, who won his third consecutive world title and has set the world record 14 times, including four times in 2025, was second with five votes in balloting announced Tuesday. Carlos Alcaraz, the world’s top-ranked tennis player who won titles at the French and US Opens, was third with four.

The AP Female Athlete of the Year will be announced Wednesday.

Ohtani has shown remarkable consistency since joining the Dodgers on a then-record $700 million, 10-year contract in December 2023. He won his fourth career Most Valuable Player award (second with the Dodgers) by unanimous vote, the first player in major league history to do so.

This year, he posted a 1.014 OPS and hit 55 home runs. Returning to the mound for the first time since 2023, he had a 2.87 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 47 innings over 14 starts.

Ohtani saved his best for the postseason.

In Game 4 of the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, he pitched six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts and hit three home runs to earn MVP honors. He said it was his greatest game in a career full of incredible feats.

“If you think about it in terms of a single game, I’d say that’s probably true,” Ohtani said. “It was a crucial game in the postseason, and I personally feel I played quite well in that game.”

Does he surprise himself?

“Well, yes, there are times when I feel that way about myself, and of course there are times when I think I’m not good enough,” Ohtani said, “so I suppose athletes experience both kinds of feelings.”

Ohtani showed he’s human in Game 7 of the World Series. He singled in the first inning and then took the mound on short rest, but he struggled with his command. He gave up a three-run homer to Toronto’s Bo Bichette along with five hits in 2â…“ innings.

But he and the Dodgers raised a second straight World Series trophy after outlasting the Blue Jays in the most scintillating Series in recent memory.

“Shohei obviously has the weight of the world on his shoulders as far as expectations, being probably the face of baseball, certainly when you’re talking about the world,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after Game 7. “It’s just really special what he’s done. Just a great person and a great competitor.”

Ohtani’s presence has been transformative for MLB’s global reach. Game 7 of this World Series averaged 13.1 million viewers in Japan, the most watched World Series game on a single network there ever, and 51 million watched worldwide to make it the most viewed since Game 7 of the 1991 World Series.

How does Ohtani keep topping himself?

“I think the higher your goals are, the more you have to do, and the more you want to do,” Ohtani said. “If you’re satisfied with where you are now, I don’t think it’s possible to achieve your goals without putting in the effort. So, setting goals high is what I believe is most important.”

The Dodgers carefully managed Ohtani’s return to pitching this year by gradually increasing his workload after rehabbing from elbow surgery in September 2023. His innings were initially capped before he was allowed to make longer starts as he felt better.

“When it comes to feeling nervous, being on the mound definitely makes me more tense,” Ohtani said. “It’s a position where you can single-handedly ruin a game, and at the same time, it’s also a position where you can contribute to a win. So, in my mind, I feel that being a pitcher is truly a special role.”

At 31, Ohtani has undergone three major surgeries: two on his right elbow and another on his left shoulder. Regardless of the physical and mental wear and tear, he plans on remaining a two-way player his entire career.

“I think it’s best to keep doing it right up until the moment I retire,” Ohtani said.

Winning a third consecutive World Series championship is among Ohtani’s biggest goals in 2026.

“Staying healthy and appearing in every game without injury, that’s the smallest goal I have,” Ohtani said.

Ohtani became a father when his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, gave birth to their daughter in April. He carefully guards against revealing her name and any details about his home life. No word on how his beloved dog Decoy reacted to having a new sibling, either.

Ohtani’s American fans enjoy hearing him speak English on the rare occasions that he has done so publicly, including at both World Series celebrations. He understands most of the language, although he uses an interpreter in interviews.

“I think it would be best if I could speak in English, so even if it’s just small steps, I want to keep working at it,” Ohtani said. “Whether it’s with fans or in different situations, being able to speak directly in English might help bridge the gap between us.”

In the meantime, he’ll keep letting his bat and arm speak volumes.

In the 10 years since Jerry Dipoto joined the Seattle organization as general manager in 2015, his stated goal has always been the same: Put the Mariners in position to finally win their first World Series title.Â

After a decade of clawing to get there, Seattle nearly pulled it off in 2025, falling just one win short of their first World Series appearance. Only a crushing 4-3 defeat to the Blue Jays in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series dashed the Mariners†hopes in 2025.

But with a stacked rotation of homegrown starters, including Logan Gilbert, Bryan Woo, George Kirby and Bryce Miller, and a lineup that features star player Julio Rodriguez, 60-home run catcher Cal Raleigh and recently re-signed first baseman Josh Naylor, along with a loaded farm system, the Mariners look poised to contend for years to come.Â

For his efforts, Dipoto, now the teamâ€s president of baseball operations, is BA’s 2025 Major League Executive of the Year.Â

“It really is not a one-person job,†Dipoto said. “While this one might be singled out as me, it is such a group effort. Itâ€s a village, you know?

“What weâ€ve been able to do through player development, it just makes me thankful for all the wonderful people who Iâ€ve had an opportunity to work with over these years.â€

Though it was devastating to fall short after coming so close to the World Series, Dipoto sees this past season as a sign that the organizationâ€s long-held plans are finally coming together.

“It really was reaffirming that what we all believed was that through a foundation in scouting and player development—what weâ€ve been able to achieve in those areas—putting together a really strong foundation with our major league club,†Dipoto said.

“This really should just be our coming out party of sorts.â€

Former Mariners assistant GM Andy McKay, who took a job this offseason as the Guardians†field coordinator, credited Dipotoâ€s confidence and willingness to adapt on the fly as big reasons for the organizationâ€s recent success.

“Organizations … theyâ€re hard to turn around, and it generally is not going to happen quickly,†McKay said. “So, even through some of the lean years in terms of winning at the major league level, you knew on the inside the infrastructure that he was building, it was going to get to a place where it was going to work.Â

“And I think everybody inside of the building always felt that.â€

That faith took patience. Dipoto spent a few years in charge of a Mariners squad featuring star players such as Robinson Cano, Kyle Seager, Felix Hernandez and Nelson Cruz before commencing a “step back†that saw Seattle get rid of many fan favorites before the 2019 season.Â

A couple years of losing baseball followed as Dipoto went about rebuilding Seattleâ€s farm system. The Mariners re-emerged into contention in 2021 and broke their 21-year playoff drought in 2022, before coming within one game of the playoffs in 2023 and 2024.

In 2025, they captured their first AL West title since 2001.

It hasnâ€t always been a smooth ride. Some of the Mariners†big-name acquisitions in recent years, including Jesse Winker, Jarred Kelenic, Teoscar Hernandez and Kolten Wong, didnâ€t work out. Fans have expressed frustration at Seattleâ€s lack of offseason free agent signings. Almost all of the Mariners†top acquisitions of late have come via trade.Â

Dipoto also took some heat after the 2023 season for his infamous “54 percent†comments, regarding the teamâ€s goal to sustain that winning percentage over a 10-year span.

But some of Dipotoâ€s savvier moves have come in the past few seasons, including the 2024 trade with the Rays for Randy Arozarena, re-signing Jorge Polanco for a resurgent season after Polancoâ€s injury-riddled first year in Seattle, and the midseason trades in 2025 for Naylor and Eugenio Suarez.Â

“Sometimes you just have to get a little bit lucky, is the truth of it,†Dipoto said. “You take enough shots and youâ€re going to miss some and youâ€re going to hit on some.Â

“Weâ€ve taken a lot of shots over the years, and they havenâ€t all worked. But weâ€ve been on a pretty good run in terms of finding the right people who fit in our environment, the types of players who fit in our ballpark.â€

With one of the most talented farm systems in MLB, the Mariners also have many young players who can step into big league roles soon. A trio of rookies—third baseman Ben Williamson, second baseman Cole Young and righthander Logan Evans—all played a part in 2025.

Recent first-round picks, including lefthander Kade Anderson (2025) and shortstop Colt Emerson (2023), donâ€t seem far away. Neither does slugging Cuban outfielder Lazaro Montes.Â

“Bottom line, you know, our entire organization, we want to win,†Mariners farm director Justin Toole said. “I think thatâ€s the No. 1 thing that Jerry led the way with is just putting our group in a position to try to win and have success—and it definitely showed up on the field.â€

With plans to re-sign Polanco and add another bat and some bullpen help, Dipoto is eager to see how the Mariners can follow up their magical run.

“Weâ€ve been to a couple of postseasons now, and each year we go back to the post, we get a little bit stronger,†Dipoto said.

“You know, the fiber runs a little bit tighter, and the needs are a little bit fewer than the roster before, and we feel as confident about this roster going into this offseason as we have about any team weâ€ve ever had.â€

PASADENA, Calif. — Shohei Ohtani is catching up with more legends.

The baseball superstar ends 2025 by winning The Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for the fourth time, tying him with Lance Armstrong, LeBron James and Tiger Woods for most among male honorees.

“Receiving this award multiple times is something truly special,†Ohtani said in Japanese in an exclusive interview with the AP.

Ohtani received 29 of 47 votes in balloting among sports journalists from the AP and its members after his two-way dominance culminated in a repeat World Series title for his Los Angeles Dodgers – delivering perhaps the greatest single-game individual performance in sports history along the way. He previously won the award in 2024, his first season with the Dodgers, and in 2023 and 2021, when he was with the Los Angeles Angels.

The AP honor has been given out since 1931. Multisport standout Babe Didrikson Zaharias won six times over the 1930s, â€40s and â€50s, the most by a man or woman.

The ultra-competitive Ohtaniâ€s latest win broke a tie with Michael Jordan, who along with Woods, he followed while growing up in Japan.

“Last year, I said I wanted to win this award again, and I will work hard so that I can win it again next year as well,†he said.

Swedish-American pole vaulter Armand Duplantis, who won his third consecutive world title and has set the world record 14 times, including four times in 2025, was second with five votes in balloting. Carlos Alcaraz, the worldâ€s top-ranked tennis player who won titles at the French and U.S. Opens, was third with four.

Ohtani returns to two-way supremacy

Ohtani has shown remarkable consistency since joining the Los Angeles Dodgers on a then-record 10-year, $700 million contract in December 2023.

He won his fourth career Most Valuable Player award (second with the Dodgers) by unanimous vote, the first player in major league history to do so.

This year, he posted a 1.014 OPS and hit 55 home runs. Returning to the mound for the first time since 2023, he had a 2.87 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 47 innings over 14 starts.

Ohtani saved his best for the postseason.

In Game 4 of the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, he pitched six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts and hit three home runs to earn MVP honors. He said it was his greatest game in a career full of incredible feats.

“If you think about it in terms of a single game, Iâ€d say thatâ€s probably true,†he said. “It was a crucial game in the postseason, and I personally feel I played quite well in that game.â€

Does he surprise himself?

“Well, yes, there are times when I feel that way about myself, and of course there are times when I think Iâ€m not good enough,†he said, “so I suppose athletes experience both kinds of feelings.â€

Another year, another championship for Ohtani and the Dodgers

Ohtani showed heâ€s human in Game 7 of the World Series. He singled in the first inning and then took the mound on short rest, but he struggled with his command. He gave up a three-run homer to Torontoâ€s Bo Bichette along with five hits in 2 1/3 innings.

But he and the Dodgers raised a second straight World Series trophy after outlasting the Blue Jays in the most scintillating Series in recent memory.

“Shohei obviously has the weight of the world on his shoulders as far as expectations, being probably the face of baseball, certainly when youâ€re talking about the world,†Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after Game 7. “Itâ€s just really special what heâ€s done. Just a great person and a great competitor.â€

Ohtaniâ€s presence has been transformative for MLBâ€s global reach. Game 7 of this World Series averaged 13.1 million viewers in Japan, the most-watched World Series game on a single network there ever, and 51 million watched worldwide to make it the most-viewed since Game 7 of the 1991 World Series.

How does Ohtani keep topping himself?

“I think the higher your goals are, the more you have to do, and the more you want to do,†he said. “If youâ€re satisfied with where you are now, I donâ€t think itâ€s possible to achieve your goals without putting in the effort. So, setting goals high is what I believe is most important.â€

The Dodgers carefully managed Ohtaniâ€s return to pitching this year by gradually increasing his workload after rehabbing from elbow surgery in September 2023. His innings were initially capped before he was allowed to make longer starts as he felt better.

“When it comes to feeling nervous, being on the mound definitely makes me more tense,†he said. “Itâ€s a position where you can single-handedly ruin a game, and at the same time, itâ€s also a position where you can contribute to a win. So, in my mind, I feel that being a pitcher is truly a special role.â€

At 31, Ohtani has undergone three major surgeries: two on his right elbow and another on his left shoulder. Regardless of the physical and mental wear and tear, he plans on remaining a two-way player his entire career.

“I think itâ€s best to keep doing it right up until the moment I retire,†he said.

Ohtani plans to play for Japan in the World Baseball Classic in March.

“Iâ€m still not sure whether Iâ€ll be pitching,†he said. “Iâ€ve been given permission to play in the tournament, but as for how much and in what way, including on the batting side, thatâ€s something weâ€ll be discussing.â€

Winning a third consecutive

World Series championship is among Ohtaniâ€s biggest goals in 2026.

“Staying healthy and appearing in every game without injury, thatâ€s the smallest goal I have,†he said.

An exciting year off the field, too

Ohtani became a father for the first time when his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, gave birth to their daughter in April. He carefully guards against revealing her name and any details about his home life. No word on how his beloved dog Decoy reacted to having a new sibling, either.

Ohtaniâ€s American fans enjoy hearing him speak English on the rare occasions heâ€s done so publicly, including at both World Series celebrations. He understands most of the language, although he uses an interpreter in interviews.

“I think it would be best if I could speak in English, so even if itâ€s just small steps, I want to keep working at it,†he said. “Whether itâ€s with fans or in different situations, being able to speak directly in English might help bridge the gap between us.â€

In the meantime, heâ€ll keep letting his bat and arm speak volumes.
