The Kolkata Knight Riders†(KKR) iconic all-rounder Andre Russell announced his retirement from the IPL on Sunday, November 30, only a few days ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.
However, Russell, who retired from international cricket in July this year, will continue to play in other franchise leagues around the world, where he is part of some other Knight Riders†teams.
“Iâ€ve made a decision to retire from the IPL. Iâ€ll still be active playing in various leagues all around the world and all the other KKR franchises,†the Jamaican said in a video message.
Why Did Andre Russell Retire From IPL Before IPL 2026 Auction?
Andre Russell was released by KKR and was expected to be part of the IPL 2026 auction pool. However, he has now retired and instead will be part of the KKR support staff in IPL 2026 as “power coach.â€
In his social media message, Russell said “sometimes you just have to know when to hang up the boots,†adding that retirement was the “best decision†he could take, and he didnâ€t want to leave it for later.
Russell said,“I had some amazing time and great memories. hitting sixes, winning games, MVP and all of those things. But sometimes you just have to know when to hang up the boots. When I made this decision, I just felt like ‘yes, this is the best decisionâ€. I donâ€t want to fade out. I want to leave a legacy and itâ€s best to retire when fans ask ‘why, you still have some more in you, you still could go for a bit longer†than say, ‘yeah, you should have done it years backâ€.
The West Indian all-rounder won two IPL titles with KKR, in 2014 and 2024. He was named the Player of the Tournament in the 2019 IPL.
But his returns in the last few seasons, especially with the bat, have been underwhelming while heâ€s struggled with injury issues. KKR had reportedly discussed releasing him ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction but decided to stall that decision.
IPL 2026: Will Andre Russell be part of KKRâ€s coaching staff?
Russell will be part of the KKRâ€s coaching staff in IPL 2026 in the role of a “power coach.â€
“There have been a lot of conversations, between me and Mr Venky Mysore, and also Mr Shah Rukh Khan, about another chapter in my IPL journey, and they have shown me respect and love and they appreciate whatever I have been doing in the field and to be in a set-up where Iâ€m familiar, that matters to me a lot,†the 37-year-old revealed.
Russell was retained by KKR last year for INR 12 crore, but releasing him freed up INR 18 crore in KKRâ€s purse due to the slots system rule of the BCCI.
Russell is one of only two players in IPL history to have scored more than 2000 runs and taken over 100 wickets, with Ravindra Jadeja being the other player to record the same double.
The destructive KKR power hitter whacked 223 sixes in the IPL, the seventh-most. Among batsmen who have amassed at least 2000 runs in the IPL, Andre Russellâ€s strike rate of 174 is the highest.
When and where is the IPL 2026 auction?
The IPL auction will take place at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on December 16, 2026. This yearâ€s auction will be a mini-auction, as the mega-auction was held last year.
