    Which Team Will He Represent?

Matthew Breetzke:The South African cricket team is currently brimming with young stars who are hogging the middle order. Earlier, it may have seemed that the retirement of Heinrich Klaasen and the 36-year-old David Miller signing a hybrid contract, which reduced his international appearances, would be signals of concern for the Proteas.

However, the trio of Tristan Stubbs, Matthew Breetzke, and Dewald Brevis, all three aged between 22 and 27, promises a bright and secure future for South Africa.

Talking about Breetzke, although he has failed to make a mark in his handful of Test and T20I matches, the right-handed batsman has started off in ODI cricket like no other batsman has ever done in the history of the format.

During the second ODI against England, at Lord’s, of the three-match series, Matthew Breetzke attained a historic, unprecedented record in the ODI format. Breetzke is the first batsman in the history of ODI cricket to hit 50+ scores in each of his first five ODI innings.

Matthew Breetzke made his ODI debut in February 2025 against New Zealand in Lahore during a tri-series. He piled up a score of 150 runs, becoming the first batsman to score 150 on his ODI debut. Then he made 83 against Pakistan in Karachi.

The right-hander then featured in a couple of ODIs against Australia in Cairns and Mackay, where he recorded figures of 57 and 88, helping the Proteas secure the series.

He missed the third ODI against Australia and the first match against England due to a niggle. But upon returning to the side in the second ODI against the Three Lions at Lord’s, Breetzke continued his surreal touch in ODIs and scored 85 runs, perhaps his best knock so far, given South Africa had lost three wickets for 93 runs, and formed a match-winning partnership of 147 runs off 126 balls with Stubbs.

Breetzke now averages an incredible 92.6 in ODI cricket.

About his numbers, Breetzke joked, “It’s a bit worrying: it can only go downhill for me. It’s been a special start, to be honest. I’ve played on some really good wickets, and I just hope and pray that it’ll continue to go the way it’s gone… To be honest, I was bleak not to get to a hundred, because it would’ve been cool to be on the [Lord’s honours] board.”

Meanwhile, Breetzke also has an impressive T20 record. He’s played in 124 T20s, averaging 29 in them at a strike rate of 134, with 23 fifties to his name. One of his appearances came in the IPL 2025.

Which Is The IPL Team Of Matthew Breetzke?

Matthew Breetzke played one match for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2025. He was bought for his base price of INR 75 lakhs by LSG in the IPL 2025 mega auction. He featured in only one match in the season, scoring 14 runs off 12 balls. Given his terrific ODI form, Breetzke is expected to be retained by LSG for IPL 2026.

He has been part of the Durban Super Giants team, a sister franchise of LSG, in the SA20 competition for the last three seasons.
