The Indian T20I team under Suryakumar Yadav has been on a roll since he took over the full-time captaincy last year from Rohit Sharma.
Rohit retired from T20Is after propelling India to the T20 World Cup title in 2024. Since then, under Suryakumar, India have won all their T20I series, including lifting the Asia Cup with an unbeaten run, and currently have a 2-1 unassailable lead over Australia in a five-match T20I series.
What is Indiaâ€s record under Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is?
Since 27 July 2024, when Suryakumar led India for the first time as a full-time T20I skipper, India have won 22 matches, the most by any Full Member team in this period, and lost only three games.
This winning run includes T20I series wins in Sri Lanka, in South Africa, at home against Bangladesh and England; the Asia Cup; and a 2-1 lead in Australia, with one game to go, meaning that they canâ€t lose this series.
However, amid all this, the form of the captain, Suryakumar, has dimmed. Once a beast in T20 cricket, the most fearsome batsman in the world in the shortest format, Suryakumarâ€s runs have dried up.
Though heâ€s played a couple of important, impactful knocks, that big, mind-boggling innings heâ€s well known for have been missing. Briefly put, a one-man match-winning innings hasnâ€t come from Suryakumarâ€s bat for India in T20Is for a long time. In fact, itâ€s been more than a year since he hit a half-century for India.
When Was Last Time Suryakumar Yadav Hit A Fifty In T20Is?
The last time Suryakumar hit a fifty in T20Is was on 12 October 2024 against Bangladesh in Hyderabad. It has been 18 innings since then that Suryakumar has not reached the half-century mark.
In his last 18 innings, Suryakumar has managed a poor average of only 14, scoring 210 runs at a strike rate of 120, numbers disastrously belying his reflecting his dismal form.
His highest score in these knocks was 47* against Pakistan in the group game at the Asia Cup. That is his only score of 40+ in this period, during which heâ€s been dismissed for under 20 twelve times!
IND vs AUS: How many runs has Suryakumar Yadav scored in this series against Australia?
Suryakumar, though, has shown signs of improvement and a hope of returning to his best form in the current T20I series in Australia: his scores in the 4 T20Is so far in this series are 39*, 1, 24, and 20. Both of his last two innings were of strike rates of 200 or more, but he just couldnâ€t carry on and build his start into something substantial.
The fans, the team management, and Suryakumar himself would be hoping to end his half-century drought in the IND vs AUS 5th T20I on Saturday in Brisbane, where a good batting-friendly but bouncy Gabba pitch awaits.
With India being on a winning chariot, Suryakumarâ€s place in the XI is not yet in doubt. But as the T20 World Cup approaches fast in February next year, India will want their captain and a huge match-winner to be back in his most destructive mode.
