-Tonight’s show is live, but next week’s show will be filmed immediately following.

-Many of tonight’s performers were shown walking around NYC ahead of the show. A hype segment about MSG aired.

-There was clearly a giveaway of gold towels, as nearly everyone in the audience was waving one.

    (1) THEA HAIL & JOE HENDRY vs. CHELSEA GREEN & ETHAN PAGE (c) {w/Alba Fyre) – AAA Mixed Tag Team Championship match

Hendry’s WWE signing news broke while Wade Keller and I were at the NXT house show in St. Paul, and this is his first televised match as a member of the company. He was wearing an NXT-branded Joe Hendry shirt. Vic mentioned that Green landed in NYC at 6 in the morning from a flight from London.

The women opened the match. A dueling chant was about 60% Green, though fans are louder and more performative when they’re cheering for heels, so it was probably more like even. The women went to a series of reversals and a stalemate before tagging in the men. Hendry got an early advantage with an arm drag. There was a “Joe Hendry” chant with no pushback, as Page is one of the purest heels in the company. Hendry got a leverage cover and Green broke it up, and all four got involved briefly. The heels got shoved into one another and Hail hit a tornado DDT (off of Hendry) on Page, who bailed. Hail and Hendry did the Hendry whip-around taunt as the match went to split-screen. [c]

The men were in the ring upon return, and Hendry elbowed out of trouble, but Alba Fyre provided a distraction and Page hit the Confidence Breaker for two. Page worked a front chancery but Hendry reversed to a suplex. Hendry hit a few clotheslines, then ran the ropes and hit a huracanrana. Fallaway slam by Hendry, who then kipped up. Page bailed. Green charged but Hail dumped her, then tagged in and hit a falling senton on both heels to the outside.

It got messy on the outside and Green had a brief upper hand, but Hail hit an exploder. She covered for two, but Page yanked her off of Green. Hail did the “suck it” taunt and hit a superkick on Page. Hail reversed the UnprettyHer, then snapped on the Kimura Lock. The men barreled into the pile and it was broken up, and Green hit the UnprettyHer to finish.

WINNERS: Chelsea Green & Ethan Page at 10:40.

(Wells’s Analysis: I had some hope for the babyfaces since Hendry just signed and Hail just finally returned to TV, but realistically, AAA talents should be the ones to take the championships off of Green and Page. The match was a good way to hype up the crowd, and though the heels won, the popular Green got the victory so it wasn’t a downer)

-Lola Vice and Jordynne Grace were watching in the back, and soon after, Kelani Jordan showed up and mentioned she’d beaten both of them. Grace said Jordan was mad because she’s only got one week left with the championship. [c]

-The part of John Cena’s sit-down interview that aired last night aired again.

-Backstage, Tatum Paxley, flanked by the Culling, prepared for her match. Vic said it would be the main event.

-Ava promoted Deadline, and specifically the Iron Survivor Challenge. She said in the past, legends chose the competitors. She said this week, just one person would be in charge of the choices, and it’s John Cena. She said Cena will make his choices next week.

-Lil Yachty was shown in the crowd.

-Sarah Schreiber interviewed Tavion Heights up in the crowd. She said he has to lock in. He said he has no regrets having been in NQCC, and he learned more from them than he did in the Olympics. He rambled and got lost a bit, and said John Cena would be picking the teams next week, and he’ll be among them and will be the Iron Survivor. Just then, Josh Briggs flew into frame and attacked. They fought out a door into the concourse and brawled in front of a merch table.

-Sol Ruca and Zaria talked backstage in a hallway. Zaria said she was making a play to get their Speed Championship back, but Ruca reiterated that nobody can do this but her, and she had to go take care of the North American Championship.

-Blake Monroe was introduced ahead of the next match. [c]

-NASCAR racer Jesse Love waved to the crowd.

    (2) SOL RUCA (w/Zaria) vs. BLAKE MONROE (c) – NXT Women’s North American Championship match

The vocal males tried to make a “Blake, Blake Monroe” chant happen, but it didn’t really take, at least in the early going. They worked some headlocks and basic mat wrestling until Ruca nailed a lariat. Monroe hit a sidewalk slam for two. Ruca picked up Monroe and did an airplan spin into a drive to the mat for two. Monroe threw down Ruca by her hair, and then twisted the genuinely injured knee. Ruca flipped through and threw a kick, but she ended up near a corner and Monroe wrapped the bad leg around the post. Ruca yanked Monroe into the post to get some separation. The two hit simultaneous lariats that left both laying on the mat outside the ring as the match went to commercial. [c]

Monroe was working the bad knee on the mat. Ruca kicked up to break, then strung together kicks and strikes. Monroe went right to the knee to reassert control. Ruca forced her off and then charged her to the corner, and exploded out of it with a German suplex. Missile dropkick by Ruca. Ruca kipped up and landed on just her good leg, which was a fantastic touch. Flash knee got two for Ruca. Ruca wanted the Sol Snatcher, but Monroe yanked her down. Each woman got in a kick, and the two sold on the mat.

Monroe went outside, and Ruca set up something like a Sol Snatcher but it didn’t connect in the same way on the outside. The crowd chanted “NXT” and the crappy AI censor (or perhaps a not-so-bright human) muted the feed. Monroe took advantage as a Ruca move went awry and she hurt her knee again. Monroe took off Ruca’s leg brace and threw it up the ramp. Monroe furiously worked the leg, and Ruca wouldn’t quit. Zaria tossed a ringside official aside, found The Towel, as if there’s always one there, and threw it in the ring for the finish. The audience reacted hugely to the sight of the towel.

    WINNER: Blake Monroe at 13:19.

(Wells’s Analysis: I don’t know why a towel finish didn’t occur to me, because it seems like such an obvious next step in hindsight. Ruca’s heel turn is growing ever closer, though admittedly, it could still end up being Zaria if they want to go that way. Decent action throughout)

-Fatal Influence gassed each other up backstage and Jacy put over her chances in the main event.

-Ricky Saints walked through the back ahead of the crossover segment. [c]

    [HOUR TWO]

-Ricky Saints strode to the ring and soaked it up. He grabbed a mic, but immediately, the lights went out and Oba Femi’s music played, and he strutted to the ring in his usual fashion. He grabbed a second mic.

Saints said it was no surprise that Femi showed up here tonight, but it was a big surprise when he beat him at No Mercy. There were boos from the predictably pro-Femi crowd. He said Femi said months ago that the title was grinding on him and wearing him down, so he stepped in. He said Femi’s mistake was underestimating Ricky Saints. He said guys like Femi don’t know how to lose, so he went back to Nigeria and the train kept rolling. He said he and the people are glad Femi’s back, but not to go thinking he was going to take the NXT Championship from him.

Femi said he was the same Saints that he left. Same bravado, same little man. He said that was good, because he wanted to beat this version of him. He said he didn’t want to get into the NXT vs. TNA nonsense or the Saints-Williams “best dressed” business. He said Saints had his time in the sun, but the sun is setting on the Absolute Era. He said the bringer of war is back, and “Your daddy is home.” Big cheers for that. Saints said “You want a rematch at Deadline? You got it.” He held up his championship up.

Trick Williams’ music played him to the ramp. He said “Maybe you can’t hear that good. It ain’t over until I win my NXT Championship back.” Immediately, Myles Borne showed up and nailed Williams with a chair. He said “I heard you, Trick, and payback’s a bitch.” He told the two men in the ring that he’s the next Iron Survivor winner, and he’ll see one of them for the championship afterward.

(Wells’s Analysis: A strong segment to get to where we’re going as far as Deadline, while setting the stage for Williams either to enter in a triple threat situation or yet again enter the Iron Survivor Challenge match, won by Femi last year, and Williams himself the year before)

-Vic promoted the tag team championship up next. [c]

-Ava yelled at Myles Borne for attacking Trick, but said he could have him next week if that’s what he wants. Briggs and Heights were shown still fighting through the back Briggs used a chair and then put Heights through a table.

    (3) JE’VON EVANS & LEON SLATER vs. DARKSTATE (Dion Lennox & Osiris Griffin) (c) (w/Cutler James & Saquon Shugars) – NXT Tag Team Championship match

Five days ago I saw Evans lose a good match to Sheamus at a house show and yesterday he lost a good match to Gunther, and I think he’s losing here, but the money in Evans is in the chase so I don’t think it’s a problem.

Slater got an early near-fall on a rollup, and all four men got involved early, with the outside men lurking nearby as well. Evans dumped Griffin and got in shots on both heels, then hopped over to the announce table. He skidded on the hood, but managed to stay upright given his supernatural balance and agility. He and Slater double-teamed Lennox, then Griffin, then hit planchas on all four DarkState members after they bailed to the outside. It was a familiar scene of the gang of four being dominated by fewer men as the match went to commercial. [c]

Evans was face in peril upon return, and Lennox leaned on him for a while. Lennox cut off a tag, but Evans kicked off Lennox and made the tag after Lennox did. Slater cleaned house and dominated both men, hitting a superkick and rewind kick that was a bit of Jeff Hardy, which Vic called out. Slater laid out Griffin with a high cross-body and Griffin made it a seriously obvious kickout as he just stared up at the ref the whole time as he waited for the moment to kick out. Evans and Slater both got involved as DarkState bailed again, and Slater hopped over the corner to lay out all of DarkState. This time, the censor got it right. Back in the ring, Evans hit a beautiful frog splash for two.

Slater dealt with interfering DarkState members, leaving him open for a double-team. Evans tried to help but DarkState got out of the way and he splashed Slater. With Evans out of the ring, they hit the Doomsday Device and Griffin covered Slater for the victory.

    WINNERS: DarkState at 11:08.

(Wells’s Analysis: Is the booking team aware that on this special episode, we’ve got one match left and heels have won everything? I suppose it won’t matter, assuming Tatum wins. Slater and Evans are just magic together, but I want DarkState to be more old-school and to slow it down more often that go all workrate on us to make it a proper match (and reign))

-Back in a hallway, Kendal Grey and Wren Sinclair talked. Grey, now wearing street clothes that don’t make her look like a blank slate or a create-a-wrestler, fired up about next week’s match. Wren said she was afraid she was being ghosted when it came to the Wren QCC, but Grey said not to worry about it and they headed off. [c]

-The 2007 Cena injury, with his return “eight months early” when he won the Royal Rumble, was outlined.

-Shiloh Hill, winner of season two of LFG, was shown in a pre-taped segment. He said some people thought he was a jock and some thought he was a nerd. He said he had a weird youth where he skipped a ton of school but tested out of most of his classes. He loved football because he loved to hurt people. This was a pretty good, very weird segment, and was wildly at odds with his appearance at the house show last week, where he played underdog babyface in a loss to Grayson Waller.

-Vic promoted next week’s matches, as both Evolve singles championships are on the line, as well as the women’s Speed Championship and the women’s North American Championship.

-Fatal Influence entered ahead of the main event. The show went to commercial with 20 minutes left to the hour. [c]

-Sol Ruca pushed back against Zaria, saying she had it. Zaria said she definitely didn’t have it, so she wasn’t going to let her lose her leg. Ruca said her pride made her a double champion, and Zaria said she can’t be champion if she’s injured. Ruca gave a “whatever” at the end of the segment and shoved the towel in Zaria’s chest.

    (4) TATUM PAXLEY (w/Izzi Dame & Shawn Spears & Niko Vance) (c) vs. JACY JAYNE (w/Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid) – NXT Women’s Championship match

This is a rematch of the banger that happened at Halloween Havoc, but Mike Rome handled formal intros with just 13 minutes left to the hour, so they don’t have much time to replicate it.

Tatum worked an arm hold early and kept it on as Jayne rolled around trying to break it. Jayne pushed Paxley to a rope and threw a big palm strike and jawed at Paxley. The two worked a number of reversals before a float-over by Jayne and a crucifix by Paxley, both for two. Jayne hit a rana and posed to the crowd, which mostly booed. Paxley hit a cross-body in a corner, and Jayne was pulled to the apron by her mates. Paxley bumped Jayne into the pair, then hit a moonsault on all three. The match went to split-screen. [c]

Paxley blocked rights and hit her own. Jayne hit a lariat for two. A replay of Jayne hitting a rolling senton off the apron onto Paxley on the floor was shown. Jayne took Paxley up in a corner and hit a Frankensteiner. Paxley managed a superkick and both women sold on the mat. There was a “this is awesome” chant, and it possibly is, though most of it so far was on a tiny screen during commercial. The two got to their feet and exchanged rights and then kicks, getting the “yay/boo” across intended face/heel lines. Paxley took control and fired up. Paxley “hit” an enzuigiri from the floor to the apron that showed more light than you’ll ever see. There was a Harlem Hangover, and Vic properly called it, and Booker was clearly very pleased about both the move and Vic’s recognition of it.

Jayne controlled, and she went up. Paxley hit another step-up enzuigiri and met Jayne on the second buckle. She hit a suplex out of the corner, then set up what looked like a Perfect Plex but made it a slam. Paxley was offered a chair by her mates but she rejected it. Action went outside, and Jayne managed a big PK, but she sold the pain to her leg. Back inside, Jayne hit the Rolling Encore, and Paxley kicked out at the last moment, shocking everyone (including me).

Outside, Lainey Reid grabbed the championship belt, but Dame grabbed it away. Paxley got dumped to her own side, and she tried to go back inside, but she was blocked by Spears and Vance. Izzi Dame pump kicked Paxley to a loud reaction and then boos. Dame rolled Paxley back in, where she was left open to a second Rolling Encore, which finished.

    WINNER: Jacy Jayne at 11:27.

After Fatal Influence went back up the ramp, taunting all the way, the focus was on the ring, where the Culling stood stoically over the fallen, crying Paxley, left behind by her friends once again.

(Wells’s Analysis: I’m super bummed that Paxley’s reign is over, but this was always coming, and after the segment last week, I figured it could be coming here. Jayne as champion isn’t overly thrilling, but she’s grown leaps and bounds as a performer, so I guess another reign won’t kill me. Paxley needs another friend now, and the Lyra Valkyria thing is pretty played out at this point, so it might be time for some babyface women to band together now. The Culling are now in “pattern behavior” territory, as they’ve beaten out two members in their relatively short lifespan.

FINAL THOUGHTS:ÂWell, it was a clean sweep for the heels. I was really pulling for a Paxley win here, but the writing was on the wall, and the fact that the match was the main event made it ripe for a big angle. Despite the feel-bad slate of winners, this was a really strong show, and it heavily worked toward a second week that I’m looking forward to as well. I imagine we might see the Ruca-Zaria explosion next week, and since all of that is being filmed as we speak, will the audience tire of all the heel stuff? (It’s NYC, so probably not). I look forward to talking it out with Nate Lindberg shortly – particularly the beautiful weirdness that is Shiloh Hill. Check out PWT Talks NXT live or stream tomorrow.
