There have been clues, recently, about the consumption abilities — or tendencies — of Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton. At the Open at Portrush, Hatton regaled the press with his “three Guinness” rule. It’s good to have limits, of course. A week later, he and Rahm were together doing a LIV Golf press conference talking about how they’ve come to enjoy the same types of wine.
A lot of time spent together as Legion XXIII teammates, traveling the world and having plenty of team dinners — they like the Italian reds. Well, Rahm really does and, as Hatton put it, he just does “whatever the big man” wants. Which is a great strategy for most things, in moderation…
But it sounds like Hatton and Rahm pushed the limits on a recent night together, August 17th to be exact. Rahm had just claimed LIV’s season-long individual title and Hatton had just received a special phone call from Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald: Hey pal. We want you on the team at Bethpage.
“That was a very nice phone call to receive,” Hatton said Wednesday from the DP World Tour’s BMW PGA Championship. “I was very — yeah, I was over the moon to be honest. So Jon had just won individual, so we had a bit of a tear-up. Yeah, that was a messy night, yeah.”
Oh, boy. What does a messy night look like for two teammates who love a drink?
“A sign of things to come maybe at Bethpage?” asked one reporter.
“Yeah, I do not want to feel that bad the next day,” Hatton replied. “Yeah, that was aggressive. I won’t go into details of what state that I woke up to.”
Except, that’s exactly what Hatton proceeded to do — go into nearly every single detail.
“If you want to know, I’ll tell you,” he said, fully aware of the television cameras fixed on him and the microphone in front of him and, at this point, every eye in the room turned in his direction.
“When I did actually get back into the room, I fell across the bed sideways, and face down in that position, and then I had woken myself up throwing up in that position. I’ve then fallen back asleep in that position, and then as I’ve woken up, I had gotten sick all down my arms, both sides, all down my shirt.”
You need visuals of this to really appreciate Hatton the storyteller, who is emphasizing it all with his hands and face. Check out the video below.
“I get off the bed and walk around to the bathroom, look in the mirror, I’m like ohmygod, and I’ve got sick in my face, in my beard. How I set an alarm to make a flight in a few hours’ time, I don’t know. But yeah, then waking up in a slightly more sober state was horrendous, and having to clean up that — I mean, I ended up calling [my wife] Emily. “I was like, ‘I don’t know what to do.’ I was rushing to make the room somewhat acceptable before leaving.
“So yeah, I ended up stripping in the bed, leaving some cash and a note, saying I was “really sorry, I was sick in the bed in the night, please throw it in the trash.” I feel like I did the right thing upon leaving but I was in a pretty bad state.”
How did he get into that level of inebriation?
Hatton explained that the table and room they were in was nothing impressive. Just a celebration quickly got, in his words, “aggressive.” Hatton ended up falling asleep at the table and had to be woken up as everyone was heading to bed. So what did him in? It wasn’t just a specific drink so much as it was a mixing of drinks. They seemed to hit every corner of the bingo card.
“Well, I had like six glasses of wine at dinner,” Hatton began, “and then I had a double gin and tonic. Drunk that at a very normal rate. And then Jon was deciding what he wanted and he said Disaronno Sours, and I was like, perfect, go on then. They go down very easily. And then I was an idiot and started the chant of basically getting someone to down it, which then every cocktail that then followed was a shot. So we then ran out of Disaronno Sour. The guy at the bar made some hazelnut sour which wasn’t great and there was a few of them. Then there was a margarita and then there was a strawberry vodka thing. God, it was aggressive. It was horrible. But I mean, it was funny at the time. Until I fell asleep and couldn’t finish the last one.”
Funny at the time, painful the next morning, and back to funny in a press conference weeks later.
