England No 1 Tin-Tin Ho won Women’s Doubles gold for the University of Nottingham at the European Universities Championships in Turkey.
Ho and partner Jiaqi Meng defeated Lea Paulin & Katarina Strazar of University of Ljubljana in Slovenia 3-0 (11-8, 11-8, 11-8) in the final to take the gold medal.
It was an element of revenge for UoN after Paulin & Strazar earlier defeated England internationals Mari Baldwin & Jasmin Wong 3-0 (7, 7, 7) in the quarter-finals.
Ho and Meng (pictured above with coach Kelly Sibley) also both won Women’s Singles bronzes after reaching the semi-finals, where they both lost to one of the high-ranked Wegrzyn sisters from Poland, who were representing the Warsaw University of Economics and Business.
Ho was beaten 3-2 (11-8, 6-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-8) by Anna Wegrzyn, while Meng lost in a walkover to Katarzyna. Anna went on to win the final against Katarzyna 3-1.
UoN’s Anna Green just missed out on a medal, losing 3-1 (17-19, 11-6, 11-3, 11-3) to Katarzyna Wegrzyn in the quarter-finals, while Baldwin also lost to Katarzyna Wegrzyn, 3-0 (7, 7, 6) in the last 16. Wong went out 3-2 (7-11, 11-5, 9-11, 12-10, 11-8) to Aleksandra Jarkowska of Warsaw University in the last 32.
In the men’s competitions, UoN pair Harri Docherty & Robert Pelc reached the last 16 of the Men’s Doubles, while the best English performances in the Men’s Singles were by Harry Yip (University College London) and Howard Onweng (UoN), who reached the last 32.
