The Wellsboro Varsity Volleyball team is heading back to the District IV Class AA championship game after sweeping Wyalusing on Tuesday, October 30.

“Feels pretty good. I said this was a tough game for the girls to play tonight,” head coach Sharon Zuchowski said after her 120th career win. “We’re excited to be part of the finals again this year. It was a little hard getting going but once they got into rhythm and realized it was just a game and they could play and put everything else aside they did all right.”

The first set was back-and-forth as neither team could pull away. After tied at 12-all, Wyalusing took a 15-12 lead forcing a Wellsboro timeout. The Lady Hornets then rallied and went on a 10-1 run to lead 21-16 and a 25-18 win. The second set started much like the first but Wellsboro took over early and never looked back. After breaking a 3-3 tie eventually built up a 20-13 lead then went on to win 25-17.

In the third set Wyalusing jumped out to a 3-1 lead but again the Lady Hornets went on a 18-1 run behind the serving of sophomore Bailey Monks to lead 19-4. Wellsboro closed out the set 25-9 for the sweep.

Monks finished the night with 16 points (3 aces) and 2 blocks, junior Caitlyn Callahan had 21 kills, junior Megan Starkweather had 19 assists and 7 digs, and junior Ryann Adams and 16 digs and 8 points (3 aces). Sophomore Breighanna Kemp pitched in with 9 assists and 3 kills, senior Heidi Zuchowski had 4 kills, and Starkweather also added 7 points.

Melody Kneller had 10 kills and 12 digs for Wyalusing. Lylah Oswald had 6 kills and 5 digs, Kendall Krewson had 17 assists, and Samantha Wood had 6 digs.

Wellsboro will be back in action in a rematch of last year’s District IV Class AA finals against rival North Penn-Liberty on Thursday, November 1.

“It’s going to be a hard game,” concluded Zuchowski. “It’s going to be a great match. We’re going back to Wellsboro tonight, practice hard real hard tomorrow and come back here Thursday ready to win.”

Lady Hornets edge Wyalusing, 3-2 in District IV semi-finals

By: Ed Weaver  /  November 1, 2017

The Wellsboro Lady Hornets edged Wyalusing 3-2 to punch their ticket back to the District IV Class AA title game on Tuesday, October 31.

Wellsboro controlled the first two sets, winning 25-16 and 25-14 to take an early 2-0. That’s when Wyalusing battled back.

After a 3-0 lead by Wellsboro Wyalusing cut it to 3-2. After trailing 9-7, Wyalusing scored 4 straight points to go on top, 11-9. Both teams battled back and forth before the Lady Hornets eventually pulled ahead 21-17. Again the Lady Rams ran off 4 straight points to tie it up at 21-all. Wellsboro eventually fought back to lead 24-23.

As Wellsboro looked to put the match away, a botched block gave Wyalusing life as they rallied for the 26-24 win.

Wyalusing took a commanding 8-1 lead to start the fourth set. Wellsboro kept battling back, however as they eventually got to within a point, 18-17. Wyalusing then went on a 3-point run to take a 21-17 lead and forcing the Lady Hornets to take a timeout to regroup. The timeout worked as the Lady Hornets 4 straight points to tie it up at 21-21.

Again both teams battled back at forth to tie it up at 24-all before Wyalusing took the set, 26-24.

As the match headed into in fifth set, both teams traded points and kept it close. Eventually the Lady Hornets went up 11-8 before Wyalusing rattled off 4 straight points to go up, 12-11. After Wellsboro tied it up at 12-12, Wyalusing again jumped back on top, 14-12. Wellsboro rallied to go up 15-14, but Wyalusing again battled back and took a 16-15 lead.

Wellsboro answered back to go up 17-16. After another long volley, sophomore Ryann Adams got the ball up to senior Brianne Keane, who tried setting up senior Cheyenne Sherman. The ball traveled close to the net and looked to bounce off both players out of bounds. Wyalusing was initially awarded the point, but after some discussion, it was ruled the ball hit off Wyalusing, giving Wellsboro an 18-16 set win, and 3-2 overall victory.

“I told the girls that we needed to push for the last couple of points. Do what we started to do at the beginning of the night,” said head coach Sharon Zuchowski. “Any energy they had left they had to push forward and we just needed 5 points to get through this after start over again on Thursday night.”

Keane led the Lady Hornets with 31 assists, 13 points, and 5 aces. Sherman finished with 14 kills and 14 digs, sophomore Caitlyn Callahan 11 points, an ace, and 4 blocks; sophomore Megan Starkweather had 12 kills, 10 points, and 2 aces; senior Jillian Graver had 9 kills, 10 points, 3 blocks, and an ace; and senior Hannah Burnett had 15 digs.

Karlye Huffman had 38 assists and 3 kills for Wyalusing, Melody Kneller had 28 kills, and Kristie Epler recorded 16 digs.

Next up for Wellsboro (19-4) is a rematch with rival North Penn-Liberty for the District IV Class AA championship at Williamson High School on Thursday, November 2.

By: Ed Weaver  /  October 18, 2017

Wellsboro Varsity Volleyball head coach Sharon Zuchowski picked up her 100th career win as the Lady Hornets swept Wyalusing 3-0 on Tuesday, October 17.

“It has been a privilege to be able to come back to Wellsboro and coach in a program that started me off in the sport,” reflected Zuchowski after the match “I played for, and then coached under, the very successful Coach Anne McNaight. I am grateful for what she taught me and have tried to use some of those same principals even though the game has seen so many changes. These wins came off the hands of some very talented young ladies. It was a great win for this team tonight as we finish up our regular season and start thinking about Districts.”

After being swept back on September 21 in Wyalusing the Lady Hornets returned the favor on their home court Tuesday. Wellsboro took the first set 25-16, won the second 25-19 then hung on to win the third 25-22.

Lady Hornets top Wyalusing 3-1 to win District IV title

By: Ed Weaver  /  November 6, 2015

For the second time in four years, the Wellsboro Volleyball team won a District IV championship. The girls defeated Wyalusing 3-1 on Thursday, November 5 at Williamson High School.

It’s diffucult for a team to beat an opponent three times in one year, but that’s exactly what the Lady Hornets did. In a rematch of last year’s title game, won 3-2 by Wyalusing, the Lady Hornets were out for revenge and to put their names in the history books. The last time Wellsboro won the title in 2012, members of this year’s team were in seventh and eighth grade.

The focused Lady Hornets took the first set 25-16 as they controlled the net, and were all over the court defensively. Wellsboro won the second set 25-23 as they held off a Lady Rams’ late rally.

Wyalusing wouldn’t go down without a fight as they got Wellsboro off their game in the third set, a set the Lady Hornets have had trouble with all year long. The Lady Hornets tied the score up at 5-5 on a long volley, but then faltered as Wyalusing ran off 10 straight points to run away with a 25-12 victory.

Leading 2-1, the Lady Hornets regrouped in the fourth set. After trailing 3-0 early, the girls tied it up, then kept it close. After tying the score back up at 11-11, Wellsboro turned the tables and went on a 6-0 run to push the score to 17-11, then closed out the match on two four point runs.

With senior Darci Warriner serving on set point, Wyalusing returned the ball back to senior Mikayla Feil, who in turn sent a hard shot to the back line. The shot deflected off a Lady Ram, another tried to recover, but the ball sailed to the Wyalusing bench ending the Rams’ season and sending Wellsboro home with a 25-14 victory and the championship crown.

“Winning tonight means just as much to me as it did four years ago,” said head coach Sharon Zuchowski. “The girls have worked hard all year and finally conquered a couple of our demons tonight in tip coverage and serve receive. Overall, the girls really played well and I’m very proud of them. It’s nice to see a season culminate in a championship.”

In Wellsboro’s previous two games with Wyalusing this season, Wyalusing took Wellsboro to five sets in both of them, with the Hornets barely hanging on. That was something Coach Zuchowski heard in the days leading up to the game after Wyalusing knocked off Shamokin last weekend.

“We really wanted this one bad,” Zuchowski explained. “We wanted to show we were the better team and we didn’t want to mess around and come out and show what we were made of and I think we did that.”

“It means everything to us and it feels great,” said senior Haley Zuchowski.

“We gave it all we had tonight,” said senior Maddy Kyle. “We knew that there was no other option and we had to get it done in that last set.”

“We’re a very talented group and when we put it all together we have a really good outcome and work well as a team,” said senior Hannah Wagaman.

Feil led the team with 13 kills, junior Kirsten Florio had 12, and Warriner finished with 9. Junior Morgan Florio recorded 19 assists, sophomore Brianne Keane had 10, and Kyle finished with 7. Wagaman led the team with 25 digs, Zuchowski pitched in 18, and Warriner added 12, with Kirsten Florio adding 5 blocks.

Zuchowski scored a team-high 17 points, including 5 aces, to lead the Lady Hornets. Morgan Florio finished with 10 points and an ace, and Warriner and Kirsten Florio each scored 6 points.

The team improves their record to 17-2 (9-2 NTL Division 1). The team will now wait for their seeding in the PIAA State Playoffs at a date, time, and location to be determined.

Lady Hornets fall to Wyalusing in District IV title game

By: Ed Weaver  /  October 31, 2014

The Wellsboro Varsity Volleyball team fell to Wyalusing in five sets in the District IV Class AA Championship game on Thursday, October 30.

The Lady Rams jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in the first set. Wellsboro battled back to within 16-10 but only got as close as 18-14 as Wyalusing took the first of five sets, 25-18. In the second set the Lady Hornets took the early advantage but Wyalusing would eventually tie the set at 10-10. Wellsboro kept the score close and eventually won 26-24 to tie the match at 1-1.

The third set was all Wyalusing as they quickly took an 8-4 lead and never looked back. The Lady Rams won the third set 25-9 to take a 2-1 lead of the match.

Despite trailing after the third set, head coach Sharon Zuchowki was confident her team could rally back.

“The last time we came to the near side of the court we were down a game. We had regroup in the fourth set so we could make it an even match again.”

The Lady Hornets did just that as they rebounded in the fourth set to force the fifth and final set. Wellsboro jumped out to an early 5-2 lead before Wyalusing tied it at 5-5. The teams traded points for the remainder of the set until they pulled ahead 25-20 for the win.

“We struggled with serve receiving all night,” continued Zuchowski. “I told the girls that they needed to concentrate on getting their serves in and to give us an opportunity to play the ball because when we were serving we had the advantage.”

The two teams were even in the fifth set as it was tied at 5-5 before Wyalusing started pulling away. The took control of the fifth set 15-8 to win the match 3-2 and give the Lady Rams their first district title.

Senior Peyton Wilson had 17 points, two aces, and five assists, and Junior Haley Zuchowski had nine points, and an ace, with 20 digs. Junior Darci Warriner had eight points, two aces and 22 digs and Morgan Florio had eight points and an ace with 13 assists. Senior Paige Carr had 25 digs, Senior Danielle Mihalik and Sophomore Kirsten Florio each had six kills and Senior Jordan Butters had three blocks.

“I’m very proud of the girls. Wyalusing is a strong team and we thought it would be hard for one team to beat us three times in a season,” Zuchowski concluded. “We just kept plugging and took it down to the wire but you have to give credit to Wyaluing. The played hard and we struggled and couldn’t fix our problems.”

The loss ends Wellsboro’s season at 12-7 (5-5 NTL Division 1).

M.S. volleyball beats Wyalusing

By: Ed Weaver  /  September 9, 2013

The Wellsboro Middle School volleyball team struggled keeping their nerves in alignment again on Saturday but held on to beat Wyalusing, 2-0.

Wyalusing had several good servers which often made it difficult for the girls to make a good pass to the setter, but the Lady Hornets held on to take Wyalusing down in 2 games, 25-20 and 25-23.

“This will be an area of concentration in practice this week,” said head coach Jenn Outman. “With that said, several Wellsboro girls retaliated with powerful and consistent serves to Wyalusing.”

Grace Feil, Sydney Tremper, Brianne Keane, and Rachael Tuttle all lead the team in steady, authoritative serves. Lizzie Poirier led the team in spikes and kills. Brianna Keane did an amazing job of finding each pass and getting it to the middle or outside position.

“Unfortunately though, the score was closer than it should have been,” Outman continued. “My philosophy is to implement the ‘Bump, Set, Spike’ as often as possible, even if there are mistakes. When opposing teams hit the ball back in one hit, it makes this expectation challenging. Often times my team wants to play that type of game instead of their own. Once the team found their confidence and rhythm they began to control the game.”

In the B game, the Lady Hornets won 2-0, beating Wyalusing 25-14 and 26-24.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 2-0 on the year.
