COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Judy Bell, whose devotion to golf led her to become the first woman to be president of the U.S. Golf Association, died Monday at her home in Colorado after spending 15 months in hospice care, the USGA said. She was 89.

Bell was 15 when she took a train from her native Kansas to California to compete in the U.S. Girls’ Junior. She lost to the great Mickey Wright in the semifinals, her highest finish. But she played on two Curtis Cup teams and was the U.S. captain of two Curtis Cup teams.

What marked her career was volunteering on USGA committees, becoming a rules official and working her way up to become the first woman on the executive committee. She was elected president in 1996.

“Judy Bell was more than a leader, she was a force of nature whose vision and compassion shaped the very soul of the game,” said Mike Whan, the CEO of the USGA. “Judy helped open doors for countless young girls to find their place, their confidence and their joy in golf. She broke barriers not for the sake of recognition, but to make the game better and more welcoming for everyone.

“All of us at the USGA mourn her passing and celebrate the extraordinary life of a woman whose impact will continue to be felt for generations.”

Bell was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001, and she was among the first women to receive honorary lifetime membership in the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in 2015 when it voted to allow female members.

She showed her quick wit when asked how it felt to be the first woman to be USGA president.

“I don’t know yet how it feels to be president because I’ve only been one for a few hours, but I know how it feels to be a woman because I’ve been one for 59 years,” she replied.

It was during Bell’s two-year presidency that the USGA created a grants program that now has contributed more than $65 million to golf programs for juniors, players with disabilities and other diverse groups.

“I’m passionate about the game of golf, which has given me so much sheer joy and pleasure that I have always wanted to give something back to it,” Bell once said about devoting so much time to the USGA. “Without question that’s really what my volunteer efforts have been about.”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Dawn Staley said she is convinced that NBA teams might never be ready to hire a woman as a head coach after her recent experience with the New York Knicks.

Staley boasts one of the greatest coaching résumés in the history of basketball, which is why the Knicks interviewed her earlier this year before ultimately choosing Mike Brown as their new coach to replace Tom Thibodeau.

Staley said she was legitimately interviewed by the Knicks and entered the process with an open mind, but acknowledged that she doesn’t think the league is ready for such a historic hire.

“No, I don’t [believe it will happen in my lifetime],” Staley said Tuesday during SEC media day. “And I hope I’m wrong.”

Staley, 55, said she accepted the interview opportunity from the Knicks because she has known team president Leon Rose and senior adviser William “Worldwide Wes” Wesley for 30 years.

Staley, who revealed earlier this year that she would have taken the job if the Knicks had made an offer, said she emphasized in the interview process that the Knicks would have to be prepared to handle the scrutiny she would have endured if she had been hired as the first woman head coach in NBA history.

“If the Knicks have a five-game losing streak, it’s not going to be about the losing streak,” said Staley, a Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer who has won three national championships at South Carolina. “It’s going to be about being a female coach. So you as an organization, a franchise, you have to be prepared for and strong enough to ignore those types of instances when you’re going to look to hire a female coach.”

Although she said she doubts an NBA team will ever make that move, Staley said the process with the Knicks helped her learn more about the possibility, which can help future candidates and NBA teams.

“If there is somebody that is interested in knowing and interested in being the first female NBA coach, I’ve got all the information,” she said. “Come see me, because I’ll get you prepared for the interview.

“And if there are NBA franchises that are interested in hiring a female, I’m here, too, because you’ve got to be ready to take that on and all the things that it comes with because it’s not just about hiring the first female coach.”

Staley’s Gamecocks are ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll behind only defending champion UConn.

South Carolina announced this week that Chloe Kitts, an AP All-America honorable mention last season, will miss the entire year with a torn ACL. Staley said the injury is a major loss for the Gamecocks because Kitts is “irreplaceable,” but she also said the injury will not end the program’s title aspirations.

“We’re unafraid of going into season without [Kitts],” she said. “We’re not going to skip a beat. Our players know that when we sustain any kind of injury, we believe in the system that we put together. We believe in the players that we’ve assembled.”

A woman has filed a lawsuit against former NHL player Willie Mitchell and a resort in Tofino, B.C., alleging she was sexually assaulted by ex-defenceman while she was “extremely intoxicated.”

The plaintiff, who isn’t named in the lawsuit, says in a civil claim filed in British Columbia Supreme Court on Wednesday that she was employed as a server at Tofino Resort + Marina Inc. in September 2022.

The woman’s claim says the resort was hosting a fishing tournament and after finishing her shift she went to an adjoining pub, where she became “visibly impaired” by alcohol, leaving her with only “fragmented” memories of the evening of Sept. 11, 2022.

The lawsuit says Mitchell escorted her from the pub while she was wearing only one shoe and took her back to his home, where he allegedly “engaged in unprotected sexual activity” with the woman without “express or implied” consent.

The allegations in the lawsuit have not been tested or proven in court, and neither Mitchell nor the resort have filed responses in the case, while messages left for resort officials were not immediately returned.

The lawsuit says Mitchell was a company director at the resort up until February 2023.

Mitchell played 907 career NHL games with the New Jersey Devils, Minnesota Wild, Vancouver Canucks, Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings and Florida Panthers.

There hasnâ€t been any definitive discussion recently where, ‘Okay, letâ€s call a meeting.†Itâ€s always a conversation that weâ€re open to. There are some people that we like, like yeah man, he or she would be pretty cool. It all comes down to timing and thatâ€s life as well as the nature of the business.â€
