Rawlings announced the winners of the 2025 Platinum Glove Awards on Friday night, honoring the best defensive player in each league, regardless of position, as well as the best defensive team in each league.
Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was named the American League Platinum Glove winner, while in the National League, Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. won his second career Platinum Glove honor and second in the past three years.
The Rangers took home the Gold Glove team honor in the AL, while the Cubs were named the best defensive club in the NL.
Witt, who won his second consecutive Gold Glove Award this year, co-led all MLB players — regardless of position — in Statcast Outs Above Average, with +24 (tied with Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong), demonstrating his tremendous range at shortstop. Since 2023, no player has racked up more OAA than Wittâ€s +54.
Tatis, meanwhile, finished the season tied with Crow-Armstrong for most defensive runs saved among NL outfielders, with +15. Since 2023, when he moved from shortstop to right field, Tatis leads all NL outfielders by a wide margin with +42 DRS. His seamless transition to right field has resulted in two Gold Glove honors in three years.
On the team front, while the Rangers did not have their customary prodigious performance on offense last season, their defense was stellar. Texas led the Majors with +89 DRS. A key contributor was second baseman Marcus Semien, who won his second career Gold Glove Award.
The Cubs led all Major League teams with a collective +36 OAA, and in terms of DRS, Chicago’s +84 trailed only Texas. The North Siders†defensive prowess was also reflected in the individual Gold Glove Award results. The club tied a franchise record with three Gold Glove winners in 2025 — second baseman Nico Hoerner, left fielder Ian Happ and center fielder Crow-Armstrong.
MLB’s Platinum Glove is an award intended to honor the top overall defender in each league. In theory, it could be treated as a prestigious accomplishment and determined by a thoughtful process.
In practice, MLB decides it via an easily swayed fan vote and news-dumps it late on a Friday night, unlike pretty much every other individual sports award out there. Because that’s how much you should apparently care about this trophy.

Anyway, the 2025 winners of the very important Platinum Glove are Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and San Diego Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr., as announced by Rawlings at 10:48 p.m. ET. Congratulations to them.
The winners of the award were determined by a fan vote among the 10 Gold Glove winners in each league. Perhaps coincidentally, they were also the biggest names to win a Gold Glove in each league.

Earlier in the night, the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers were announced as the winners of the Team Gold Gloves.
In the AL this season, Witt was third among all defenders in Fielding Run Value and 17th in defensive runs saved while playing shortstop. In the NL, Tatis was sixth in DRS and 12th in FRV while playing right field. This is Tatis’ second time taking home the award after winning it in 2023, in which he was first in DRS and fourth in FRV.

Of course, comparing defensive value across multiple positions is rather hard, so those advanced defensive metrics aren’t the be-all, end-all. Which might make you wonder whether such an award is inherently flawed given that it asks fans to tackle complicated defensive questions, though at worst it’s still a nice thing to add to a résumé.
KANSAS CITY — The Royals†left side of the diamond was good as gold in 2025.
Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and third baseman Maikel Garcia won an American League Gold Glove Award at their respective positions this season, announced Sunday night on ESPN.
It’s the first time in franchise history that the Royals†left side of the infield has won together in the same season and just the third time that a teamâ€s left side of the infield has won together since 2003, following the â€03 Cardinals (Scott Rolen and Edgar Renteria) and â€13 Orioles (Manny Machado and J.J. Hardy).
This is Wittâ€s second consecutive Gold Glove, as he becomes the first Royals player to win multiple Gold Gloves at shortstop; the only other player to win one is Alcides Escobar (2015). Garcia took home the honor for the first time in his career. He is just the second Kansas City player to win a Gold Glove at third base, joining George Brett in 1985.
Witt recorded 24 Outs Above Average this season, according to Baseball Savant, tied with Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong for best among defensive players in MLB. Witt committed 10 errors — the fewest in his career at shortstop — and posted a .983 fielding percentage, the highest of his career. Witt also logged 1,340 innings at shortstop, third most in the AL at that position behind Seattleâ€s J.P. Crawford (1,384 2/3 innings) and Bostonâ€s Trevor Story (1,371 1/3).
Garciaâ€s 18 OAA as a third baseman this season easily led the AL at the position, 11 more than Clevelandâ€s José RamÃrez. Garcia committed just seven errors at third base for a .980 fielding percentage across the 1,144 2/3 innings he logged at the hot corner. Additionally, Garcia recorded 13 Defensive Runs Saved as a third baseman, according to FanGraphs, second most among all players at the position behind National League Gold Glove Award winner Keâ€Bryan Hayes (19), who spent the first half of the season with Pittsburgh before he was traded to Cincinnati.
Garcia recorded 17 total OAA this season, including his time at second base, shortstop and in the outfield. But he was the Royals†best option at third base, and it did not take long for the club to recognize that and make Garcia its everyday third baseman in â€25.
As a team this season, Kansas City was charged with just 62 errors, tied with the Phillies for the fourth fewest in MLB behind the Rangers (51), Braves (54) and Cubs (61). The 62 Royals errors were a franchise low for a 162-game season and 11 fewer than the previous mark set in 2019 (73).
