Jack Nicklaus, the 18-time major champion, has won a $50m verdict in a defamation case against his former company, bringing an end to one of golf’s most bitter business feuds.
A jury in Palm Beach County, Florida, found that Nicklaus Companies – the firm he founded and later sold – defamed him by spreading false claims that he had considered a $750m offer to become a public face of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League and that he was no longer mentally fit to manage his business affairs. The six-person jury ruled that the company’s actions damaged the 85-year-old’s reputation and exposed him to “ridicule, hatred, mistrust, distrust or contemptâ€.
The verdict came after four and a half hours of deliberation. Nicklaus quietly embraced family and friends in the courtroom after the decision. “We tremendously appreciate the time that the jury put into this case,†said his attorney, Eugene Stearns. “They were extraordinarily conscientious and dedicated, and we’re happy that Jack’s been vindicated.â€
The dispute dates back nearly two decades. In 2007, Nicklaus sold the rights to his name, image and golf course design business to Nicklaus Companies for $145m in a deal financed by billionaire banker Howard Milstein. After stepping down from an executive role in 2017, Nicklaus was bound by a five-year noncompete clause that prevented him from taking on new design projects. When that restriction expired in 2022, the company sued him in New York, alleging that he had diverted business opportunities and secretly entertained talks with LIV Golf.
Nicklaus responded with a defamation suit of his own, accusing Milstein and other executives of planting false stories that he had “sold out†the PGA Tour – an organization he considered central to his legacy – for Saudi money. According to court documents, a Nicklaus Companies official had arranged for him to meet with Golf Saudi representatives in 2021 to discuss course design work. During that meeting, Nicklaus said, he was asked to take a leadership role with LIV Golf but immediately declined because of the PGA Tour’s opposition to the breakaway league.
The lawsuit also accused the company of circulating rumors that Nicklaus was suffering from dementia and could no longer handle his affairs. “What they said was, ‘You need to have the keys taken away,’†Stearns told ESPN. “It was unfortunate, but Jack’s reputation has now been restored.â€
Lawyers for Nicklaus Companies argued that the case was simply a business dispute and that Nicklaus’s stature in the game remained untarnished. “His reputation is as stellar as it’s always been,†defense attorney Barry Postman told jurors. But the jury sided with Nicklaus, though Milstein and company executive Andrew O’Brien were cleared of personal liability.
The verdict follows a separate court ruling earlier this year in which a New York judge affirmed that Nicklaus is free to use his own name and likeness in future golf ventures, even as the company retains the rights to sell branded apparel and equipment.

Mjällby, a tiny team from a remote fishing village next to the Baltic Sea, won the Swedish league title on Monday for one of the most remarkable achievements in European soccer.
A 2-0 win at IFK Gothenburg on Monday ensured Mjällby held an unassailable 11-point lead with three rounds left in Sweden’s top league, Allsvenskan.
The improbable title triumph has been compared to Leicester winning the English Premier League in fairy tale fashion in 2016.
Editor’s Picks
It’s a first major trophy for Mjällby, a club from Sweden’s south coast whose team is made up of mostly locally born players, plays its home games in a 6,000-capacity stadium in the nearby village of Hällevik — population of around 800 inhabitants — and whose budget is far less than the biggest teams in the country.
“This was never something I thought would happen in my life,” said Mjällby striker Jacob Bergström, who scored one of the goals. “I’m so incredibly grateful to be part of this group. We show that the collective can take you incredibly far.”
Just nine years ago, Mjällby was one game away from dropping into Sweden’s fourth tier. The team stayed up, achieved back-to-back promotions in 2018 and ’19, and has been revitalized by the decision-making and strategies put in place by Magnus Emeus, a locally born businessman who became chairman in 2015.
This season, Mjällby — coached by Anders Torstensson, a school principal — has lost just one game and has 66 points, only one off Malmö’s record total in the 101-year history of Allsvenskan.
Mjällby will play in the Champions League qualifying rounds next season. It will be the first time the team has competed in European competition.
The match in Gothenburg was briefly delayed in stoppage time because some Mjällby fans climbed out of the stand housing visiting supporters, apparently ready to run onto the pitch in celebration. They returned to the stands after an appeal by Mjällby’s players.

When the final whistle was blown, substitutes, coaches and members of the backroom staff sprinted onto the field to congratulate the team. They then ran toward the yellow-and-black-clad fans behind one of the goals to celebrate.
Founded in 1939, Mjällby has typically played outside the top flight, flitting around the regional leagues.
It plays home game in the picturesque, 6,000-capacity Strandvallen home, which is located in Hällevik — a remote, rural village beside the Baltic Sea where fishing has long been the predominant industry.
Torstensson is in his third stint as coach and his assistant is Karl Marius Aksum, who has a PhD in Visual Perception in Elite Football and had never coached at senior level before joining Mjällby.
Mjällby achieved a club-record 50 points when finishing in fifth place last season.
This season, Mjällby has conceded just 17 goals in 27 games.
Among its best players are Axel Noren, who recently received a first call-up by Sweden’s national team, and fellow defender Abdullah Iqbal, who is Pakistan’s captain.

“Ultimo Mone” Mercedes Mone captured her historic 12th title just one day after breaking Ultimo Dragon’s record for most belts held simultaneously with her victory at WrestleDream. Mone captured Winnipeg Pro Wrestling’s WPW Women’s Championship Sunday night with a victory over Jody Threat at the promotion’s Rumble in the Burt 3 event.
According to POST Wrestling, Mone’s appearance on Sunday marked the biggest turnout for WPW at the Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg. Over 1,600 people were in attendance to see Mone defeat Threat, with a little help from Ava Lawless, who attacked the TNA star at ringside, allowing Mone to hit the Mone Maker for the victory.
The win came just hours after her WrestleDream victory over Mina Shirakawa for the interim ROH Women’s Television Championship. “The CEO” was not initially on the card for the pay-per-view, but issued an open challenge following her successful defense of the CMLL World Women’s Championship over Persephone at Arena Mexico on Friday. Mone announced she’d be putting her TBS Championship on the line at WrestleDream, and the day of the event, AEW President Tony Khan announced that the challenger would also put their title on the line, setting up Mone’s historic victory as she became “11 Belts Mone.”
The nickname only lasted the day with her WPW victory, and now, Mone will go by “12 Belts Mone,” just days after she broke Jade Cargill’s record to become the longest reigning TBS Champion in AEW history. Following her win at WrestleDream, and after she interrupted the champion’s celebration before her own match, Mone called out AEW Women’s World Champion Kris Statlander for a match at Full Gear.
The belts keep coming for Mercedes Mone.
On Sunday, Mone defeated Jody Threat to capture the Winnipeg Professional Wrestling Womenâ€s Championship. With the win, Mone is now holding twelve titles simultaneously, surpassing Ultimo Dragon’s ten titles. Mone’s win comes one day after she defeated Mina Shirakawa to win the interim ROH Womenâ€s Television Championship at AEW WrestleDream, her eleventh title.
Mone has no plans of slowing down, either. After she won her eleventh title at WrestleDream, she was confronted by Kris Statlander, who she had dissed earlier in the night. Later in the night, she issued the challenge for Full Gear, making it clear she wanted the AEW Womenâ€s Championship added to her collection.
The full list of titles Mone has won includes AEW’s TBS title, interim ROH Womenâ€s TV title, CMLL Womenâ€s title, BODYSLAM Womenâ€s title, Discovery Wrestling Womenâ€s title, EWA Womenâ€s title, RevPro Undisputed British/Queen of Southside Womenâ€s title, Prime Time Wrestling Womenâ€s title, BestYa Womenâ€s title, WPW Womenâ€s title, and the AEW Owen Hart womenâ€s tournament winner title.

RICHMOND, Va. — Justin Leonard stayed patient with his putting on a windy Sunday and watched it pay big dividends with a birdie-par-eagle finished for a 4-under 68 and a one-shot victory over Ernie Els in the Dominion Energy Charity Classic.
Leonard won for the second time this year on the PGA Tour Champions and moved into top 10 after the first playoff event for the Charles Schwab Cup.
The top 54 advance to the second postseason event next week in Arkansas.
Els was in control on the back nine of the James River course at the Country Club of Virginia and appeared to steady himself with birdies on reachable par-4 15th and the par-5 16th.
But he bogeyed the 17th as Leonard made his move. After a birdie on the 16th, Leonard hit a hybrid 4-iron to about 20 feet and holed the downhill eagle putt to post at 12-under 204.

Els failed to make a 10-foot birdie putt on the closing hole that would have forced a playoff. He closed with a 72 and shared second place with Thomas Bjorn (68).
Bernhard Langer, the 68-year-old German who has won every year on the PGA Tour Champions since turning 50, was within two shots of the lead until a long three-putt bogey ended his hopes. He shot 72 and finished three back in his bid for a first Champions win this year.
Scott Parel shot 71 and tied for 21st, moving up three spots to No. 53 to advance to the Simmons Bank Championship next week. David Bransdon fell out.

HAENAM, South Korea — Decade-long LPGA Tour veteran Sei Young Kim carded a final round 67 to hold off any final round challengers as she claimed a four-stoke victory at the BMW Ladies Championship on Sunday.
It was Kim’s 13th career title since joining the tour in 2015, and ended a five-year long drought since her last tournament victory at the Women’s PGA Championship in 2020.
Kim, 32, finished with a four-round total of 24-under-264 at Pine Beach Golf Links on the Korean peninsula, with the South Korean only dropping a shot at the par-3 third before finding six birdies through the remainder of the round to comfortably hold her closest rival, Nasa Hataoka, at bay.
Hataoka of Japan also had a final round 67 to finish at 20-under 268, with Celine Boutier (67) and Kim A-lim (66) a further two shots back in a share for third place.
Defending champion Hannah Green shot 66 and finished at 17-under 271 in a share for fifth with Yealimi Noh (70) of the United States. Fellow American Lindy Duncan (65) was a shot further back in a three-way tie for seventh with South Korean pair Choi Hye-jin (63) and An Na-rin (63) who shared the lowest round of the day.
Jeeno Thitikul last week became the first multiple winner on the LPGA this season with a five-hole playoff win in Shanghai over Minami Katsu. Thitikul did not play this week but will be part of Thailand’s team in the International Crown next week.
After the International Crown, two more LPGA events are scheduled on the five-event Asian swing — at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and in Japan.
World No 1 Matt Hauser has won the triathlonâ€s world championship series in Wollongong, ending a 15-year drought for Australia.
Two-time Olympian Hauser never relented across Sundayâ€s 1.5km swim, 40km cycle, and 10km run event and won gold by a monster 34 seconds on home soil.
The 27-year-old was cheered home by a raucous crowd and finished the gruelling Wollongong course in one hour 42.42 minutes.
Spainâ€s David Cantero Del Campo claimed silver, while Italian Alessio Crociani was a further seven seconds behind in third.
Hauser, in tears at the finish line, joins Emma Moffatt as the only Australians to win an Olympic-distance world title since the championship became a series in 2009.
The 27-year-old is the first Australian man to win the world series, after Pete Robertson won in 2005 when the world title was decided by a one-off race.
Luke Willian was Australiaâ€s next best male on Sunday, finishing 16th out of the 52 athletes.
Hauserâ€s biggest threat Miguel Hidalgo, ranked second in the series, was fourth.
Germanyâ€s Lisa Tertsch triumphed in the womenâ€s final as reigning Olympic champion Cassandre Beaugrand failed to finish.
Tertsch finished the race in one hour 56.50 minutes to win her maiden crown.

The womenâ€s series had shaped as a two-horse race between defending champion Beaugrand and Beth Potter, who had entered as equal series leaders on 2925 points.
But a struggling Beaugrand began to tumble down the order early in the run, before Great Britainâ€s Potter dropped out of contention on lap three of four.
While Beaugrand did not finish the Olympic distance course and dropped to seventh in the standings, Potter finished 16th and is third overall.
Sophie Linn was Australiaâ€s best female and finished 18th out of 39 starters, ahead of teammate Emma Jeffcoat in 29th.
Earlier on Sunday, Lauren Parker clinched another medal after Australia finished second in the Para Mixed Relay, with the USA taking gold.
After claiming her fifth paratriathlon world title the day before, Parker combined with Jack Howell, Jeremy Peacock and Maggie Sandles – with guide Lauren Sprague – to win silver ahead of Brazil.
