SEATTLE (AP) Jorge Polanco hit a game-ending single in the 15th inning, and the Seattle Mariners advanced to the AL Championship Series by outlasting the Detroit Tigers for a 3-2 victory Friday night in the longest winner-take-all postseason game in baseball history.

With one out and the bases loaded, Polanco drove in J.P. Crawford with a liner to right on a full-count changeup from Tommy Kahnle. Crawford held his arms in the air as he touched home plate while the Mariners poured out of the dugout to celebrate in front of a frenzied crowd of 47,025.

Crawford hit a leadoff single, Randy Arozarena was hit by a pitch and Julio Rodríguez was intentionally walked before Polancoâ€s big swing on the 472nd pitch of an epic Game 5 that clocked in at 4 hours, 58 minutes.

It was the third one-run game – all with a 3-2 score – in a tightly contested AL Division Series.

“I know we played a long game, but this team never gave up,†Polanco said. “I know there is a lot of emotion, but we are always trying to keep it simple. Iâ€m just trying to go out there and play and trying to get the win.â€

The Mariners left 12 runners on base and still managed to advance to the ALCS for the first time since 2001. Next up is a matchup with the AL East champion Blue Jays, beginning on Sunday night at Toronto.

“Just an incredible ballgame from top to bottom,†Mariners manager Dan Wilson said.

Luis Castillo pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win in his first major league relief appearance. Logan Gilbert, another member of Seattleâ€s rotation, worked two scoreless innings in his first relief outing since his college days at Stetson University in 2017.

“It was such a tough night,†Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh said. “Everyone put their other stuff side and did everything for the team, including Logan and Luis.â€

Detroit wasted a stellar performance by Tarik Skubal, who struck out 13 while pitching six innings of one-run ball. The Tigers went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base.

“We had an incredible game today that – unfortunately, somebody had to lose, and that somebody was us, and it hurts,†manager A.J. Hinch said.

Kerry Carpenter put Detroit in front when he hit a two-run homer off Gabe Speier in the sixth inning. Carpenter had four hits and walked twice, becoming the first player to reach five times and hit a home run in a winner-take-all postseason game since Babe Ruth in 1926, according to STATS.

The Mariners tied it at 2 on Leo Rivas†pinch-hit single off Tyler Holton in the seventh. Rivas celebrated his 28th birthday with his first postseason hit.

“He was up to the task tonight,†Wilson said. “It was a huge hit.â€

The Mariners had a runner on second with no outs in the 10th, 12th and 13th inning – and came up empty each time. Arozarena and Eugenio Suárez both grounded into a double play in extra innings.

The Tigers threatened in the 12th, putting runners on second and third with one out. Zach McKinstry was cut down at home when he attempted to score on Javier Báezâ€s grounder to third. After Carpenter was walked intentionally, Gleyber Torres flied out to right.

Dillon Dingler hit a one-out double for Detroit in the 14th, but he was stranded there when Parker Meadows struck out looking against Eduard Bazardo and Castillo retired Báez on a popup to first.

“Guys just kept battling. There were opportunities on both sides after the ninth inning,†Hinch said.

Seattle dropped four of its six games against Toronto this season. The Mariners won two of three in an April series in Toronto, but they were swept by the Blue Jays at home from May 9-11.

WUHAN, China — Aryna Sabalenka extended her winning streak at Wuhan to 20 matches with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over eighth-seeded Elena Rybakina on Friday to reach the semifinals of the WTA 1000-level tournament.

The US Open champion won the Wuhan Open title in 2018, ’19 and again last year on her return to the Chinese city.

Top-ranked Sabalenka broke Rybakina’s serve three times in the 1-hour, 25-minute match to advance into the semifinals for the 11th time this season, and then waved and blew kisses to the crowd.

It was also comfortable for third-seeded Coco Gauff, who cruised into a second straight semifinal with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Laura Siegemund.

The American lost to eventual champion Amanda Anisimova in the final four at the China Open last week.

Gauff will next face either No. 2-ranked Iga Swiatek or Jasmine Paolini, who were playing in the late match.

Sabalenka will play sixth-seeded Jessica Pegula, who earlier Friday went to a third set for a seventh consecutive match. She dropped the first set against Katerina Siniakova before reeling through the next two for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory.

Pegula is coming off wins over No. 9 Ekaterina Alexandrova and fellow American Hailey Baptiste, when she needed seven match points to clinch the win.

According to statisticians Opta,, external Sabalenka is the fourth female player to win their first 20 main draw matches in a single WTA level event since 1990 after Monica Seles at the Australian Open (33-0), Steffi Graf in Leipzig (25-0) and Caroline Wozniacki in New Haven (20-0).

Sabalenka, who retained her US Open title in September, controlled the match against Rybakina, sealing the first set with a hold before breaking the Kazakh’s serve in the first game of the second.

Despite a few service wobbles in the closing stages, Sabalenka took a comfortable win to set up the match with Pegula – a player against whom she has won eight of her 10 meetings.

Asked about her consecutive wins at the tournament, four-time major winner Sabalenka said she feels a “really great connection” with the fans in China.

“I feel at home every time playing here. Honestly, that’s just crazy,” she said.

Sixth seed Pegula was a set down against Siniakova before fighting back to take the second set unchallenged. She then clinched the third set for her 50th win of the season, boosting her chances of qualifying for next month’s season-ending WTA Finals.

Pegula’s last seven matches have all gone to three sets, with the world number six losing just one of them. “I guess I’m in really good shape,” she said.

American Gauff, seeded third, converted five of eight break points against German Siegemund, and has only dropped nine games across three rounds in Wuhan so far.

The French Open champion and world number three, who was defeated by Amanda Anisimova in the China Open semi-finals last week, faces seventh seed Paolini next.

Italian Paolini, ranked eighth in the world, had lost her previous six matches against Poland’s Swiatek, but the 29-year-old took just 26 minutes to secure the opening set against the second seed on her way to a memorable victory.

The top-ranked Sabalenka’s streak includes winning titles at Wuhan in 2018, 2019 and 2024.

The win over No. 9 Alexandrova came a day after Pegula needed seven match points to beat fellow American Hailey Baptiste in the second round.

It was Pegula’s sixth straight three-set match, and for the fifth time, she won.

“I can’t remember the last time I played two sets,” Pegula said. “But I’ve been competing really hard, and I’ve been playing a lot of really good players. It was different conditions today with the roof closed, and I think it took us a little while to get adjusted.”

In night matches, No. 2 Iga Swiatek was scheduled to play Belinda Bencic and No. 3 Coco Gauff, coming off a semifinal loss to eventual champion Amanda Anisimova at the China Open last week, was due to face Zhang Shuai.

The Undertaker shockingly lost a top WWE title despite winning.

The Undertaker is no stranger to winning in WWE, as he has done it throughout his career. The Phenom had a sensational 21-match winning streak before being defeated by Brock Lesnar. The Phenom is not just a legend inside the ring, but outside it, he has turned into a mentor for the younger generation, as a judge on WWE LFG. During the first season of the show, he was crowned the LFG Champion as he toppled fellow legends, Booker T, Bubba Ray Dudley, and Mickie James.

Now, The Undertaker has lost his title in a shocking turn of events.

Shawn Michaels Crowned The Undertaker’s Wife, Michelle McCool, With The WWE LFG Title

The second season of LFG saw Shilloh Hill and Dani Sekelsky become the winners. They were both mentored by The Undertaker, which means that the Phenom technically won the season, given that two of his mentees won the season. However, that was not enough as Shawn Michaels took the LFG Title away from ‘Taker and gave it to his wife and fellow LFG mentor Michelle McCool.

The Hall of Famer won the title in her first season after replacing Mickie James.

Despite The Deadman losing, the title will at least stay in the family.

Earlier in the night, Michaels shockingly removed a star from the show.

Manchester United host Sunderland tomorrow, sitting 14th in the Premier League table after a continuation of their bad form under Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils slid to 15th last season after Amorim’s appointment – the club’s lowest finish since their return to the top flight 50 years earlier.

Last weekend they lost 3-1 at Brentford, to leave them on only seven points from their first six games of this season, once again increasing the scrutiny on Amorim.

Paul Scholes won an incredible 11 Premier League titles during his time at Manchester United, and still deeply cares about the club with which he spent his entire playing career.

FourFourTwo met up with the midfield legend as we visited a recording of his new podcast The Good, The Bad & The Football with his Class of 92 team-mate Nicky Butt and presenter Paddy McGuinness, and asked him to predict where Manchester United might finish this season.

“I’d take top 10 now,” Scholes said. “It’s not been a great start. They can’t seem to put two wins together. Potentially they could do better, but at this point it’s looking unlikely.”

Asked to choose which summer signing he was most excited about, he said: “Bryan Mbeumo. Obviously, he had Premier League experience at Brentford, he looks a really exciting player and a type of player who should get United fans off the edge of their seats.”

Which player from his great Manchester United team would be the first he’d put into the current team? “I’d go for Ryan Giggs,” he said.

“I think Man United at this moment in time are lacking a bit of entertainment. Ryan Giggs lifted people, lifted the crowd and lifted the players around him.”

Scholes was also asked his views on Amorim’s current predicament, with the pressure ever increasingly on the Portuguese boss after last weekend’s defeat at Brentford.

“You talk about managers being sacked, and none of us like doing that,” Scholes stressed.

“But if he’d have been sacked on Sunday, I think we’d have all been saying ‘Yeah f***ing hell it’s about time, there’s no surprise to it’.

Paul Scholes

“I think he did have an excuse last year. He couldn’t train – well, he could train, but every three days they had a game. He’s had everything now, they’ve spent £200m and he’s got three weeks in between games to do everything he wants to do and get his style across.

“There’s just no sign of it getting any better, is there? Look, you’d like him to do well but he’s got to win games of football and he’s not winning enough games of football to warrant doing the job at the minute.”

The Good, The Bad & The Football with Scholes, Butt and McGuinness is a brand-new weekly video podcast, available on all major podcast platforms and YouTube. There will be an in-depth chat with the trio about football and their careers in an upcoming issue of FourFourTwo magazine.

With eight WSL winners’ medals, six FA Cups and three League Cup winners’ medals, Chelsea skipper Millie Bright has done it all domestically.

A domestic treble last season – her second with the club – was her latest achievement, while on the international front she was part of the 2022 European Championship winning side and would then captain the Lionesses to the World Cup final 12 months later.

Bright had to withdraw from selection ahead of Euro 2025, so was not present when the Lionesses defended their crown, but as she looks back at her career to date and ahead to what’s next, more European success is high on her to-do list.

As is often the case with any footballer at the highest level, the road has not always been straightforward, with Bright scoring an own goal in the Euro 2017 semi-final and then being sent off in the 2019 World Cup semi. Did she think she was jinxed?

“Yeah… At the Euros, the ball flicked off me and went in, but small moments like that don’t define your legacy or how well you might have played during the whole tournament,” Bright tells FourFourTwo.

“As long as you learn from things, they’re a blessing, rather than a hindrance. I got sent off in the World Cup semi-final, but you gain a thick skin and have to deal with a lot. We shouldn’t have to put up with hatred or trolling, but it made me stronger. In sport you have to be thick-skinned – there are opinions and we have to deal with them.”

The hard yards paid off at Euro 2022, but did she ever imagine a day as big as the Wembley final, when Germany were seen off?

“Oh god, absolutely not!,” Bright exclaims. “That was by the far the best day of my career to date. If we go and win the Champions League at Chelsea, that will top it, purely because I’ve been with the club for so long and on the journey from the start, when we got battered by Wolfsburg.

“We used to draw Wolfsburg every time! Each year we get closer, so winning the Champions League with Chelsea, it would be the pinnacle of my career and the proudest moment by a country mile. But I also didn’t think I’d be in the position I was in, playing in a Euros final as the home nation.

“That’s what topped things off at Euro 2022 – we did it here, with our fans, and the whole country just went wild.”

With Leah Williamson injured for the 2023 World Cup, Bright was handed the captain’s armband and led the side all the way to the final. What was that like?

“Crazy,” she adds. “Leading the girls out at a World Cup was really special, and for the final especially. It was surreal. Those are the moments you carry with you forever, regardless of the outcome.”

The No. 17 Alabama Crimson Tide knocked off No. 5 Georgia at Sanford Stadium on Saturday, 24-21, improving to 3–1 on the season, snapping the Bulldogs 33-game home win-streak in the process.

Senior quarterback Ty Simpson completed 24-of-38 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns, adding a rushing score of his own. He connected with Germie Bernard for one touchdown, while Isaiah Horton hauled in five receptions for 65 yards and a score. Jam Miller led the ground game with 46 yards on 16 carries.

Georgia’s Gunner Stockton completed 13-of-20 passes for 130 yards and one touchdown, connecting with Colbie Young for the score. Running back Chauncey Bowens led the ground game with 119 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown, while Josh McCray also ran one in.

The SEC matchup gave Alabama its first conference win of the season, bringing them to 3–1 (1–0 SEC). Georgia dropped to 4–1 overall and 1–1 in league play after entering the game undefeated.

Fans praised Kalen DeBoer and Bama after the gutsy road win on Saturday.

Alabama jumped out to a surprising 14-0 lead as Simpson connected with Bernard and Horton for touchdown passes on the Crimson Tide’s first two possessions. Georgia responded early in the second quarter, with Stockton finding Young for a score to cut the deficit in half.

A costly fumble by the Bulldogs set up a Crimson Tide field goal, extending the lead to 17-7. Georgia’s Bowens answered with a rushing touchdown, but Simpson capped an offense-heavy first half with a rushing score of his own. Alabama took a 24-14 lead into the break.

Simpson set up kicker Conor Talty for a 43-yard field goal early in the second half, but the attempt missed. Georgia responded with a touchdown run from McCray, cutting the deficit to three. The score held at 24-21 heading into the fourth quarter.

Georgia’s offense was kept out of scoring position in the final quarter, and Alabama cruised to a 24‑21 win.

Alabama will face  No. 18 ranked Vanderbilt at home next Saturday.

For the first time in pre-season play, the Detroit Red Wings didn’t come away victorious.

The Pittsburgh Penguins responded from what was a 2-0 first period deficit with three unanswered goals, including a pair of third period tallies, to earn a comeback 3-2 win at PPG Paints Arena in downtown Pittsburgh.

Former Red Wings forward Robby Fabbri, who agreed to a professional tryout agreement with the Penguins, knotted the score with an early third period goal, followed by a power-play tally from Philip Tomasino that ultimately stood up as the game-winner.

As they did during their first pre-season contest earlier this week against the Chicago Blackhawks, the Red Wings iced a lineup mostly comprised of young players, most of whom will be playing in the minors this season.

One player who will likely spend time with the Grand Rapids Griffins, but doesnâ€t quite fit the “young prospect†label at 27 years old, is John Leonard, a former San Jose Sharks draft pick signed to a one-year, $775K contract this offseason.

Leonard scored twice for the Red Wings during the opening 20 minutes of play, which included skating in down the right wing on a partial breakaway and sniping a shot blocker side past goaltender Tristan Jarry for the night’s opening goal.

Leonard knows how to score goals, as he did 36 times last season while playing in 72 games for the Charlotte Checkers, the AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers.

His second tally was a floater from just inside the blue line that somehow eluded Jarry, who may have been partially screened.

Red Wings goaltender John Gibson, who was born in Pittsburgh, was given the start and stopped 13 of the 14 shots that he faced before giving way to Michal Postava midway through the contest.
