The word on Rohl is wholly positive, though. Players talk at length about his many strengths. Barry Bannan says he’s the best manager he’s ever played for.
It’s not the same, but he has operated successfully in a demanding regime before. In Sheffield, before he was appointed, the team was in the grip of the worst league start in more than 150 years.
He had an owner, Chansiri, who was, to put it kindly, eccentric. He had fans in uproar over all manner of things. He had players who were not only demoralised but also unpaid at times.
So, though Rohl is only 36, he’s had experience of football’s turbulence. He’s young, but he may not be wet behind the ears. You’d hope not, for his sake. Once a defender, he was invalided out of the game with an ACL injury at 21. It takes talent and drive to do the things he has done since then.
Every Rangers fan will know the outline of his story, the assistant manager positions he held at RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and Germany.
He has said before that he doesn’t do dogma and is not a slave to any one system. He’s flexible, be it 4-2-3-1, 3-4-3, 4-4-1-1 or any other formation. It would appear that he’s tried them all at one time or another depending on the challenge staring him in the face.
There’s enough testimony out there about the endless hours he put in at Sheffield Wednesday and the improvement he made to the players he had – Djeidi Gassama, now at Rangers, being one of many.
The fans liked and admired him. He kept Wednesday up when most people had abandoned all hope. He got them to 12th the following season with a side high on energy and togetherness despite Chansiri-inspired mayhem behind the scenes.
The supporters didn’t want him to leave at the end of his second season in July this year, but thought he was better off out of the basket case.
He cited financial issues and a total breakdown in communication with Chansiri as the reason for a mutually agreed contract termination.
Rohl says the scale of the challenge at Rangers is part of the appeal, which is what you would expect him to say, but fans have heard too much chat from too many managers to be comforted by fighting talk.
Win games and he can be as quiet as a Trappist monk. Don’t win games and the eloquence of the greatest orator will not save him. It was ever thus.
Sheffield Wednesday’s crisis has hit a new low with news that the club will ‘imminently’ be served with a winding-up petition over an unpaid tax bill.
The Championship club are already under five separate EFL embargoes after they failed to pay wages on time in five of the past seven months, with fans staging several protests against owner Dejphon Chansiri.
And now it has emerged Wednesday are set to be served with a winding-up petition – a formal court application to force a company into compulsory liquidation – with BBC Sport reporting the club owe HMRC £1 million.

Wednesday’s solitary win this season was a 2-0 victory at Portsmouth last month, while they have also claimed creditable draws away to Wrexham and Birmingham City, and at home against Queens Park Rangers. They even beat Bolton Wanderers and Premier League Leeds United in the Carabao Cup, both on penalties, before exiting to League Two Grimsby Town.
It means that if the worst happened and the Owls were expelled from the league, it would have a knock-on effect for the rest of the division.

EFL regulations state that if this happens during the regular season the club’s ‘playing record shall be expunged’, meaning their results up to that point would be removed from the record.
As things stand, that would see Wrexham, Birmingham and QPR all lose a point, while the five teams to beat Wednesday this season – Leicester City, Stoke City, Swansea City, Bristol City and Coventry City – would have three deducted from their total.

In a league as competitive as the Championship, that can make a big difference – demonstrated by the fact that if you deducted points won against Wednesday from the current table, Leicester would fall from third to eighth and Bristol City from 10th to 16th.

EFL rules also state the number of relegation places from a league will be reduced by the number of clubs that are expelled during the season – so if Wednesday cannot complete the campaign, only two teams would go down, rather than three. The two clubs currently occupying the other Championship relegation places are Oxford United and Sheffield United.

The regulations add that the number of relegation places in League One would then be reduced from four to three to ensure there are 24 clubs in that division the following season.
League Two would keep its two relegation places, unless the EFL Board decided otherwise – which happened in the Covid-disrupted 2019-20 season when Stevenage finished 23rd on points per game but were granted a reprieve following Bury’s expulsion from League One.

If two teams are relegated from League Two, the EFL Board has the power to promote an extra club to the division to restore the number of teams across the Championship, League One and League Two to 72.
Of course, the hope is that none of this comes to pass. The imminent winding-up petition should put pressure on Chansiri to sell Wednesday and although the club still could be put into administration and incur a points deduction if the petition is thrown out, it would finally mean the end is in sight for his controversial tenure at Hillsborough.
Kyle Schwarber four home run episode of Abbott Elementary airing Wednesday night
\n\n”,”providerName”:”Twitter”,”providerUrl”:” Schwarber hit four home runs against the Braves, becoming just the 21st player in baseball history to homer four times in a game. It made everything about the episode more Hollywood than anybody in Hollywood could have imagined.\n\n“For it to be Kyle, for it to be Schwarbs, who homered four times, who was already such a big part of the episode, that was just wild and ecstatic,†said Chris Perfetti, who plays the character Jacob Hill. “It was surreal. We had the freedom to sort of react to the game, to just stay in character and be there. But I remember, it was after the third homer, I think, we all just stood up as ourselves, losing our minds that it was Kyle again.\n\n“I remember just looking at Quinta and being like, ‘What is happening?â€â€”,”type”:”text”},{“__typename”:”Video”,”contentDate”:”2025-08-29T03:27:37.793Z”,”preferredPlaybackScenarioURL({\”preferredPlaybacks\”:\”mp4AvcPlayback\”})”:” Schwarber joins JP Morosi following hitting four home runs to discuss bouncing back after a series sweep and more”,”displayAsVideoGif”:false,”duration”:”00:02:12″,”slug”:”kyle-schwarber-on-historic-performance-four-homers”,”tags”:[{“__typename”:”TeamTag”,”slug”:”teamid-143″,”title”:”Philadelphia Phillies”,”team”:{“__ref”:”Team:143″},”type”:”team”},{“__typename”:”PersonTag”,”slug”:”playerid-656941″,”title”:”Kyle Schwarber”,”person”:{“__ref”:”Person:656941″},”type”:”player”},{“__typename”:”TaxonomyTag”,”slug”:”vod”,”title”:”vod”,”type”:”taxonomy”},{“__typename”:”TaxonomyTag”,”slug”:”mlb-network”,”title”:”MLB Network”,”type”:”taxonomy”},{“__typename”:”TaxonomyTag”,”slug”:”mlbn-showcase”,”title”:”MLB Network Showcase”,”type”:”taxonomy”},{“__typename”:”TaxonomyTag”,”slug”:”interview”,”title”:”interview”,”type”:”taxonomy”},{“__typename”:”TaxonomyTag”,”slug”:”team-featured”,”title”:”team featured”,”type”:”taxonomy”},{“__typename”:”TaxonomyTag”,”slug”:”rivalry”,”title”:”rivalry”,”type”:”taxonomy”}],”thumbnail”:{“__typename”:”Thumbnail”,”templateUrl”:” Schwarber on historic performance, four homers”,”relativeSiteUrl”:”/video/kyle-schwarber-on-historic-performance-four-homers”},{“__typename”:”Markdown”,”content”:”Long before that historic night, Major League Baseball had reached out to “Abbott Elementary†about its potential interest in shooting an episode at the ballpark with the Phillies.\n\nIt loved the idea.\n\n“Do you think we could shoot it at a game?†the show asked.\n\nAbsolutely.\n\nBoth parties got to work.\n\n“Theyâ€re pitching story and characters, weâ€re pitching how to make it baseball authentic,†said Nick Trotta, who is MLBâ€s vice president of global media programming and licensing. “But this was one of destiny. We filmed two days without anybody else there, and then we came back and filmed during the game. During the game is where we caught some real extra bonus energy. Seeing our cast feed off whatâ€s happening on the field, seeing Kyle Schwarber hit four home runs … oh my God, that was crazy. You canâ€t script that type of energy, and it really came across on the screen.â€\n\nThe episodeâ€s writer was on set, so when Schwarber hit his first homer, everybody could adjust and react accordingly.\n\n“The baseball gods were smiling on us,†Trotta said. “After the second homer, I joked with the writer, ‘This has to be part of the episode, because heâ€s gonna hit a third one.†And then he hits a third one and a fourth one. So while the show is completely fictional, Kyle Schwarberâ€s historic four-homer game is now part of Abbottâ€s cinematic universe.â€\n\nEinhorn made a point to be as authentic as possible throughout the episode, besides getting in-game footage of Schwarber homering and rounding the bases. Phillies public address announcer Dan Baker made the in-game announcements. Perfettiâ€s character references real Phillies programs, happenings and food offerings at the ballpark.\n\n“I donâ€t think you can fake that place or that energy,†Einhorn said.\n\nEinhorn wanted Schwarber to be real, too.\n\n“The first thing Kyle said during rehearsals is, ‘Look, I have no idea what Iâ€m doing. Iâ€m not sure what to say,â€â€ Einhorn said. “I said, ‘Anything Kyle Schwarber would say, Kyle Schwarber can say. Anything Kyle Schwarber would do, Kyle Schwarber can do. Just be Kyle Schwarber in the scene. Say what you want to say, think what you want to think and itâ€s going to be great.†What I wanted most was authenticity from Kyle. And he was fantastic. Thatâ€s a smart dude who can hit a baseball.â€\n\n“I really enjoyed making my acting debut with such a great crew on a show thatâ€s so Philly and hilarious,\” Schwarber said. \”Quinta and the team definitely brought me some luck that night.â€\n\nSure enough, Schwarberâ€s scene looks and feels natural.\n\n“I thought he killed it,†Perfetti said. “After you give a performance like that in your chosen field, Iâ€m sure he was riding high. Mandaric took control of his father’s engineering business in the Serbian city of Novi Sad at the age of 21.
Five years later it was one of the largest firms in Yugoslavia and on a collision course with Marshal Tito, country’s communist dictator.
Tito denounced Mandaric as a “capitalist traitor” when the entrepreneur took his family to Switzerland.
Mandaric spent a year there, desperately trying to get his cash out of the Balkans, then moved to United States where he founded a computer-components firm and an electronics business.
He acquired US citizenship and signed George Best to play for the first professional sports team in Silicon Valley, the San Jose Earthquakes.
Frustrated by the slow progress of the game in the US, Mandaric bought Belgian club Charleroi and then moved on to Nice.
Portsmouth were on the brink of bankruptcy when he bought them in 1999 before being revived under his stewardship in a pattern which would earn him a reputation as football’s ‘Mr Fixit’.
There would be the wobbly start as owner and club got acquainted, a few spins of the managerial merry-go-round, investment in the squad, improvement, promotion, consolidation, sale.
With Harry Redknapp appointed as manager, Mandaric’s Portsmouth won the Championship in 2003 before he sold the club to French-Israeli businessman Alexandre Gaydamak for £32m in 2006.
Mandaric bought Leicester City for £6m in 2007. The Foxes were relegated to League One in 2007-08 but returned as champions in 08-09 and lost in the Championship play-off semi-finals in 09-10.
He sold Leicester to Thailand’s Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha for £40m later that year and bought a heavily indebted Sheffield Wednesday for £1.
The Owls won promotion from League One in 2012 before Mandaric sold them to another Thai, Dejphon Chansiri, for £37.5m.
Manadaric was also memorably involved with Redknapp in a corruption saga that started with a BBC Panorama investigation in 2006, and ended with them being acquitted of tax evasion in 2012.
Earlier this year, Mandaric considered buying back Wednesday to save the club from being “destroyed” under current chairman Chansiri.
However, he decided against pursuing the idea because he could not devote sufficient time to “return the club to the healthy condition I left it in”.
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Eli Manning landed a fade within 5 feet but missed the putt, Bobby Flay cooked up a birdie, John McEnroe and José Andrés mugged for pictures with red, white and blue-clad fans and Catherine Zeta-Jones curtseyed on the tee box as the crowd serenaded her on the eve of her 56th birthday.
Those were some of the scenes Wednesday at the All-Star Celebrity Matches at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, a light-hearted, laugh-filled 11-hole event pitting U.S. and European stars from the stage, screen, sports and culinary worlds — even Hogwarts.
Teams of two per side squared off in a modified scramble format on the golf course’s opening and closing stretches. Winning a hole earned a point. A tie was worth a half-point per side.
The U.S. won, 25-19, earning early bragging rights before the pros tee it up on Friday.
Manning, the ex-New York Giants quarterback, and “Saturday Night Live†star Colin Jost led the way with 7.5 points. Manning’s former teammate, “Good Morning America†host Michael Strahan, teamed with country singer Miranda Lambert to put up 6 points, while singers Kane Brown and Noah Kahan accounted for 6.5 points for the U.S. side.
Andrés, the Spanish chef and humanitarian, and Finnish hockey great Teemu Selanne, were Europe’s only winning pair, 6-5, over TV chef Flay and tennis great McEnroe.
But the scoreboard didn’t seem to matter much to fans who lined the ropes for a glimpse of their favorite celebrities, or to the stars, who were playing to the crowd as much as they were lining up putts and sizing up tee shots.
“It’s awesome,†said Brown as he signed autographs and posed for pictures on the way to tee off on the celebrities’ second-to-last hole, the par-3 17th.
After Manning’s birdie miss on 14, a fan shouted: “Peyton would’ve made it!â€
A few groups later and still no birdies on the hole, Andrés turned to the crowd and guaranteed one would fall. Andrés left his putt short, but Flay curled his in from about 15 feet. The “Food Network†star leaped into the air and gestured like he’d just won the Masters. Fans roared.
With Strahan just off the green, a fan helpfully yelled: “All you got to do is chip it in.†Puffing on a cigar, the pro football hall of famer replied, “That’s what I’m hoping for!†His shot came close, dancing to about two feet from the cup.
When Kahan was the only player in his group to land a shot on the green, he playfully pointed to himself and the ball, as if telling the crowd, “look what I did.â€
Actors Tom Felton and Oliver Phelps from the “Harry Potter†films, playing in the same group for Europe, could’ve used some of their on-screen magic after they sent fans ducking with an errant tee shot. It hit a tree and fell harmlessly. Felton’s subsequent putt rattled around the cup but wouldn’t go in.
Brian Murphy, of East Rockaway, New York, didn’t mind the duffed shots or missed putts.
“It’s been refreshing to see people who are so high up on the social ladder just kind of play and shank a ball every now and then,†said Murphy. “It’s like, ‘Oh, my game isn’t that bad.’â€
