The main word that springs to mind is stability.

In May 2022, Giovanni van Bronckhorst consoled his players in the sweltering heat of Seville as Rangers lost the Europa League final on penalties. It was a mesmeric and heroic run with a sting in the tail, but a Scottish Cup win was to follow just days later to soothe the pain.

Six months on to the day, the Dutchman was axed and the Rangers managerial merry-go-round began.

Since then, Michael Beale, Philippe Clement, Barry Ferguson and Martin have all been in charge across a period of just over three years, with only a League Cup win to show for it.

“They’ll be looking for a bit of help probably, guidance, just to get them a bit of stability,” said former Rangers striker Billy Dodds, who was part of the coaching team last season under Ferguson.

“There’s things that can help. I’ve been in there, we gathered it when we went in right away, got it feeling vibrant again, got it feeling happy, and then you get to the football as well.

“There’s a lot of things that can be done to help right away, but long-term, they need somebody who’s a leader, good at galvanising people, and then make sure that the guy they put in there is going to demand strong values and send out the right message that this club now is on the right path.”

Since Martin’s back-door exit at the Falkirk Stadium, it’s been under-19s coach Steven Smith, B Team coach Brian Gilmour, performance coach Rhys Owen and goalkeeper coach Sal Bibbo holding the fort.

Inside the dressing room Rangers do have experience. Jack Butland, John Souttar, Kieran Dowell and captain James Tavernier make up the squad’s senior leadership team.

Dodds, though, believes a strong figurehead is needed in quickly.

“He (Tavernier) can only do so much so,” he said. “Tav’s not a really outspoken guy, he’s a quiet lad, does his talking on the pitch.

“There’s a group, the leadership core in there, but I wouldn’t say that it’s the old-school leaders where they’ll get all the team together and make a speech, it’s not like that.

“I think it’ll be collective as a unit, they’ll be probably saying to one another ‘we need it sorted, we need it sorted pretty quickly’.

“There’s no real standout leader, even though there’s the captain, the vice-captain, there’s a leadership group. I think the boys have got to get together, but they can only do so much.

“I think it’s up to the club’s hierarchy to get the managerial situation sorted out and maybe get a strong figure in there that’s a leader.”

Angel Reese and Suni Lee made history on Wednesday.

The WNBA star and United States gymnastics star walked the stage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in New York, becoming the first athletes to ever participate in the event.

Reese walked down the stage while Madison Beer, the girlfriend of Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, performed. Lee came out a few moments later.

Reese announced last week that she had been selected to participate in the event.

Reese attended the event last year and knew it was something she wanted to do at some point in her career.

“I literally could not stop smiling!” the two-time All-Star told People‘s Catherine Santino and Hedy Phillips. “It’s such a surreal and full-circle moment — just last year I was in the audience manifesting being on that runway, completely inspired and in awe of all the powerful women walking down the runway, and now I get to return as an Angel. This will be an unforgettable night that I’ll forever be grateful for.”

Reese is obviously most known for her WNBA career, but she’s emerged as a fashion icon as well, showing off her outfits in the tunnel before games.

Both Reese and Lee have made history in their respective sports, and now they’ve made history on the runway as well.

Welcome to I Tried It, a GOLF.com series about golf items — apparel, gear, accessories, etc. — that we’ve recently taken out for a spin. We’re here to give our honest, no-frills takes on the latest and greatest golf or golf-adjacent items. So, scroll down to read about what we love about golf’s newest (or new to us) products.

I’ve got a confession to make: Over the last several golf seasons, I’ve gotten lazy. I used to be someone who walked almost every time I played. Rain or shine, hot or cold, I was hoofing it. But for the last few years, I’ve slowly reverted to a cart golfer.

The comforts of a buggy are difficult to argue. Having a place to store all of your belongings is a huge plus, and getting off your feet between shots is always nice. That’s to say nothing of the shade the roof affords you on those hot summer days. Suffice to say, the siren song of the golf cart has been impossible for me to ignore. I’m not proud of it, but I’m glad I’ve finally gotten it off my chest.

The best lightweight golf bags for walking rounds

The 3 best lightweight golf bags for walking the course

By:

Maddi MacClurg

Thankfully, I’m now on the road to recovery — and that’s in no small part thanks to the new Sun Mountain Eclipse E-1.5 bag.

When approached with the opportunity to test their newest line of bags, I had one request: I want the lightest one possible. Suffice to say, the E-1.5 delivered.

At just 3.4 pounds, this bag is light as a feather. The Cordura Nylon Ripstop material is extremely lightweight, but at the same time offers durability and water resistance. And despite its light weight, the bag has plenty of pockets for storage, including a magnetic pocket for easy access to your rangefinder during the round.

Since putting this bag in play, I’ve fallen in love with walking the course again. No longer do I dread schlepping the fairways with my clubs in tow. Thanks to the lightweight design of the E-1.5, sometimes I forget I’ve even got my clubs on my back.

If you’re a golfer that’s serious about walking — or wants to become a walker — give this bag a shot. There aren’t many better lightweight options.

LOS ANGELES — Donâ€t expect the Cincinnati Reds to pitch around Shohei Ohtani in Game 2 of their wild-card series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Manager Terry Francona has too much respect for the former league MVPs who bat second and third in the Dodgers†lineup.

Asked before Wednesday’s game if heâ€d consider intentionally walking Ohtani, Francona scoffed and said, “Youâ€re kidding, right? Have you heard of Mookie Betts or Freddie Freeman?â€

Francona described Ohtani as “a really dangerous hitter†but also pointed out that the two-way star struck out 187 times during the regular season, third-most in the National League.

“Thatâ€s where we have to get to,†Francona said. “You start walking people in that lineup, and youâ€re asking for trouble.â€

The Reds attacked Ohtani in their 10-5 Game 1 loss to the Dodgers on Tuesday — and while the superstar struck out three times, he also made them pay with a pair of home runs.

He opened the bottom of the first inning by turning on a 100-mph inside fastball from Reds fireballer Hunter Greene and rocketing a screaming line drive over the right-field wall. Then in the sixth inning, with chants of M-V-P raining down from the upper deck, Ohtani blasted a 454-foot moon shot high into the right-center-field bleachers.

Ohtani piled up 55 home runs and 102 RBI during another MVP-caliber regular season, but even so, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts raved Tuesday about Ohtaniâ€s ability to raise his level in the postseason.

“His focus gets more keen, and the at-bat quality is better,†Roberts said. “Thatâ€s a reason why he signed to be with this ball club, this organization, to play in games like this, to showcase his otherworldly talent. I expect really fun things this postseason out of Shohei.â€

Before the wild-card series began, Francona also spoke glowingly of Ohtani, calling him a “generational player.â€

“You don’t want to let him get those arms extended,†he said Monday. “You make a mistake, and it goes a long way, a long way.â€

But as much respect as Francona has for Ohtani, he wonâ€t give the Dodgers’ slugger the Barry Bonds treatment.

Said Francona on Wednesday: “I think it would be a very poor decision.â€

After last year’s cancellation because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Gran Premio Cantones de La Coruna – the Spanish leg of this year’s World Athletics Challenge – Race Walking – returns on Saturday (5) to confirm that the event is arguably one of the key 20km competitions of the season.

Podebrady podium will clash again

In the absence of the always powerful Asian armada, the top Europeans will kick off as the main favourites in the guise of Sweden’s Perseus Karlstrom and the Spanish tandem of the European champion Alvaro Martin and silver medallist Diego Garcia. Authorised neutral athlete Vasiliy Mizinov was initially announced but due to visa problems the current world 20km silver medallist won’t be competing.

As for the reigning world bronze medallist Karsltrom, the 31-year-old is fresh from a commanding win in 1:18:54 at the European Race Walking Team Championships in Podebrady 20 days ago. The Swede is enjoying a very solid season as he also won in Murcia in March – on the occasion of the Spanish Championships – in a season’s best of 1:18:45, while his PB remains the 1:18:07 he set in La Coruna in 2019 when he placed fourth.

The local duo of Martin and Garcia should also be a factor on Saturday. The latter prevailed over Martin in Murcia – 1:19:40 and 1:19:54 their respective times – to take the Spanish title but the European champion bounced back in Podebrady when he defeated Garcia to finish second (PB of 1:19:14) and third (1:19:19) respectively.

Of this leading triumvirate, all among the top 10 in the world rankings, only Martin has previously won the event. He did so in 2017, when Karlstrom was runner-up, while Garcia also finished second in 2018.

Other notable entrants are Germany’s world fourth-placer Christopher Linke, holder of a 1:18:42 PB, and Spain’s Luis Alberto Amezcua, who recently clocked 1:19:54 in Murcia to claim national bronze. Watch out too for his fellow Spaniard Marc Tur, a convincing victor in Podebrady at the 50km event in a massive career best of 3:47.40, while a large Mexican squad will also be on show headed by Isaac Palma (1:20:54) and Carlos Sanchez (1:20:39).

Morejon to maintain momentum

The women’s event will be held two hours before the men’s competition gets under way.

Ecuador’s Glenda Morejon should arguably be tipped as the marquee athlete; the still 21-year-old made a major breakthrough in La Coruna in 2019 when she won in style thanks to a 1:25:29 performance to set a still-standing world U20 record. The big question mark for Saturday is whether she will have recovered from the effort she made last Saturday at the South American Championships in Guayaquil where Morejon won gold in the 20,000m track event in 1:29:24, head and shoulders clear of Brazil’s Erica Sena, runner-up in 1:30:51. The 36-year-old Brazilian will also be in contention in La Coruna. A creditable fourth at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London, she took the top spot La Coruna in 2017.

The Spanish charge will be led by Laura Garcia-Caro and Raquel Gonzalez. The former is fresh from a third place in Podebrady in a PB of 1:28:07, while Gonzalez also performed well in the Czech city as she claimed fourth with a 1:28:37 clocking, just one second off her 2014 career best. They both will be aiming for a podium place alongside the reigning European 50km bronze medallist Julia Takacs, holder of a 1:27:58 career best and twice second here back in 2013 and 2018.

Colombia’s Sandra Lorena Arenas should also be in the hunt for victory. The 2012 world U20 bronze medallist finished fifth at the Doha World Championships and boasts a PB of 1:28:03. Since Doha, Arenas has only competed once, taking a comfortable 10km win timed at 44:40 in Olomouc.

The course records belong to Japan’s Toshikazu Yamanishi, owner of an impressive clocking of 1:17:41 in 2019, and Liu Hong with a stunning performance of 1:24:38 six years ago, a world record then and still the third quickest ever athlete.

Venue of the 2006 World Cup, the list of past winners includes Olympic champions such as Italy’s Maurizio Damilano, Mexico’s Ernesto Canto, Poland’s Robert Korzeniowski and Ecuador’s Jefferson Perez in the men’s event plus China’s Liu Hong among women.

More than 160 race walkers will take part in the event, Mexico being the largest squad with 38 athletes.

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe awarded a World Athletics Heritage Plaque to the organisers of the event in March 2019 to recognise the event’s rich 34-year history.

Weather forecasters are predicting a sunny day with a light breeze and temperatures in the 16-18C range at race time.
