The Wellsboro Middle School volleyball team continued their undefeated season with a 2-0 (25-8 & 25-19) win over Canton on Monday night.
Canton had a young team with only 10-12 girls, so many of the younger Lady Hornets saw time in the A game.
“The seventh graders worked well together last night and were able to implement the bump, set, spike several times,” said head coach Jenn Outman.
“Amber Weiskopff had a fantastic game, as well as Kyra Keck. Amber took charge on the court and was a true leader,” Outman stated.
In addition to the play of these girls Sydney Tremper had an excellent night serving, racking up 13 serves in a row to pace the Lady Hornets to victory.
In the B game, Wellsboro lost 22-25 and 22-25.
“The scoreboard did not reflect how well they played,” said Outman. “The girls are starting to get a good feel for the game. There were several bumps, sets, spikes during both sets. I am very proud at their improvement and hard work. At this level, learning how to play correctly (fundamental skills and basic concepts) is more important than the win/loss record. This will prepare them for the future.”
The team will be back in action on Tuesday, October 1 as they host Athens.

The Wellsboro Middle School volleyball team struggled keeping their nerves in alignment again on Saturday but held on to beat Wyalusing, 2-0.
Wyalusing had several good servers which often made it difficult for the girls to make a good pass to the setter, but the Lady Hornets held on to take Wyalusing down in 2 games, 25-20 and 25-23.
“This will be an area of concentration in practice this week,” said head coach Jenn Outman. “With that said, several Wellsboro girls retaliated with powerful and consistent serves to Wyalusing.”
Grace Feil, Sydney Tremper, Brianne Keane, and Rachael Tuttle all lead the team in steady, authoritative serves. Lizzie Poirier led the team in spikes and kills. Brianna Keane did an amazing job of finding each pass and getting it to the middle or outside position.
“Unfortunately though, the score was closer than it should have been,” Outman continued. “My philosophy is to implement the ‘Bump, Set, Spike’ as often as possible, even if there are mistakes. When opposing teams hit the ball back in one hit, it makes this expectation challenging. Often times my team wants to play that type of game instead of their own. Once the team found their confidence and rhythm they began to control the game.”
In the B game, the Lady Hornets won 2-0, beating Wyalusing 25-14 and 26-24.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 2-0 on the year.

Senior Mackenzie Marple will be attending Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY next year to play volleyball.
Marple led the state-qualifying team with 64 aces, and recorded 101 kills, 190 service points, and 267 digs during the 2012 season.
“It was a really long process and I debated back and forth for months and months, but I’m really excited to attend Le Moyne next fall,” Marple said. “I know it’s going to be very competitive and it’s going to challenge me to improve my game. I can’t wait to get started.”
Marple will be joining a familiar face when she steps on campus in the fall as her sister Alex Marple is a member of the girls basketball team.
“I’m so happy to be going to school with my sister. We’ve always been really close and rarely, if ever, argue so it’s going to be great to be so close to her again.
“I’ve missed her, and being around her again will be so much fun and i think it will make the transition a lot easier for me. It’s going to be awesome and I couldn’t be happier.”
Wellsboro head coach Sharon Zuchowski is also proud of Marple’s choice.
“I am very happy for Mackenzie. I knew she wanted to keep competing in volleyball and this just validates the hard work she has put in to reach that goal. Makenzie played a major role on the team this year helping to lead Wellsboro to a District IV championship. She led the team in assists and points scored. I wish her continued success in her volleyball career as she competes at Le Moyne.”
WellsboroAthletics.com would like to congratulate Mackenzie on her signing, and wish her the best of luck at the college level.
