Leeds United vs Aston Villa: Premier League preview

Leeds are dangling precariously above the Premier League’s relegation places and have a real horrid run of games to come between now and the end of the year.

The Whites have Aston Villa, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Brentford, Crystal Palace and Sunderland all come before 2025 is out and without a goalscorer in their team, things are looking bleak.

Summer addition Dominic Calvert-Lewin has just one goal in ten games and will have to be much better if Leeds are to avoid an immediate return to the second tier come May.

With it not yet known whether funds are available to recruit in January, results will have to pick up for the West Yorkshire outfit.

The Villans have lost just two of their latest 10 games in all competitions and come into this one stronger than most.

Only behind Arsenal and Manchester City in the Premier League’s form table, Villa will hope Ollie Watkins can now get back to his best after a return of only one goal in 16 so far this term.

Defender Matty Cash even has more with two, but at least the results are coming for Emery’s men after a rocky start.

Defender Tyrone Mings (hamstring) is aiming for a return in the new year, whilst Ezri Konsa, Amadou Onana, Lamare Bogarde and Cash are all given 50/50 chances of featuring at Elland Road this weekend.

The man moved on by the police for “breaching the peace†is the 17 year old YouTuber Young Bob. Itâ€s not exactly clear but they seemed to be trying to move him on from broadcasting near the main pro Palestine demonstration using special powers in place for the duration. He was heard talking animatedly to police as they tried to get him to leave the area. He has now been escorted away.

“The best name on the pitch at Villa Park has got to be Roy Revivo, the son of Israeli legend Haim Revivo,†emails Peter Oh. “Arguably even better than Roy of the Rovers.â€

Nine further Europa League matches kicked off at 5.45pm GMT, so those matches are ongoing and into the second half. There are some notable scores:

Bad news for Martin Oâ€Neill and co: Celtic are being battered 3-0 by Midtjylland, who are on course to maintain their 100% record in the Europa League this season. Braga and Lyon, due to kick off at 8pm GMT, are the only other teams that could feasibly stop the Danish side from topping the table come the end of the night.

Nottingham Forest are being held 0-0 by Sturm Graz, the Austrian side that Celtic beat a couple of weeks ago.

Unbeaten in the Portuguese league and top of the table with nine wins and one draw from their first 10 games, Porto on course for another European defeat at Utrecht (following their loss at Forest last month), but former Norwich man Borja Sainz has just scored to make it 1-1 in the Netherlands.

There are about 20 minutes to go in each of these fixtures.

Just over an hour until kick-off at Villa Park and the scene is relatively calm, although not without a distinct undertone. The police presence here – more than 700 officers from 10 different forces – is vast, a large semi-circle of them stationed in the parkland behind Trinity Road. One woman was led away by police after carrying an Israel flag through the crowds outside; she was targeted by chants from among the numerous pro-Palestine protesters present, although there was no suggestion of any violence. A handful of other Israel flags have also been spotted. Police have been using dispersal orders when faced with the few minor altercations that have arisen so far. The insistent presence of YouTubers and influencers seems to be occupying as much of their time as anything.

Preamble

We are here because we love association football, but sport does not exist in a vacuum. Sometimes it can be caught in the crosshairs of something larger and that is certainly the case tonight.

This is a football liveblog, and we have nine Europa League 8pm GMT kick-offs to follow, of which Aston Villa v Maccabi Tel Aviv is one. My focus is on the football but I will also bring you any notable developments around the fringes of Villa Park, should there be any.

In case you are catching up on the controversy around Villa v Maccabi, and the ban on the visiting fans, here is some useful reading, in rough chronological order.

Despite the ban and Maccabi not accepting any tickets, tensions around the match remains high. Villa have warned supporters against displaying political symbols, messages or flags during the match. Protesters stood at the entrance of Villaâ€s Bodymoor Heath training ground this week displaying a Palestine flag and a rally scheduled on Thursday in support of Palestine and calling for Israel to be suspended from Uefa and Fifa. Residents local to Villa Park have expressed their anxiety before the match.

On Wednesday evening West Midlands police confirmed section 60 powers will be in place from midday on Thursday until 3am on Friday. Police horses, police dogs and a drone unit will be in use. Schools in Birmingham are closing early amid fears of unrest.

Away from Villa Park, there is eight other late kick-offs to be excited about: especially Rangers v Roma and Real Betis v Lyon. I only have two hands to type but Iâ€ll do my best to keep you abreast of all the goals from around the continent.

Premier League: Mohamed Salah nets 250th Liverpool goal in Aston Villa win; Chelsea edge Spurs 1-0Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (AP Photo/Jon Super) Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory against Aston Villa in the Premier League, ending their four-game losing streak. Mohamed Salah achieved his 250th goal for the club, and Ryan Gravenberch added another goal to help the defending champions move up to third place in the standings.”I’m glad we are back on track now. It’s a very tricky season for us because we have a few new players, they are very good players, but they need time to adapt. We lost some players too. It takes time to adapt and know each other’s games, but everything will be fine,” said Salah. Liverpool manager Arne Slot’s decision to make multiple changes during Wednesday’s 3-0 League Cup loss to Crystal Palace increased pressure on the returning players to secure a win after six defeats in seven games across all competitions.”What I liked most was that I think everybody here felt the importance of the game. I’m talking about my players and I’m talking about the fans. From start to finish the players showed up,” said Slot.Liverpool faced early pressure when Morgan Rogers hit the post with a shot after five minutes. This continued their pattern of struggling in the opening 15 minutes, which had been evident in their previous four Premier League defeats.Villa initially showed strength in breaking through Liverpool’s defense but later struggled with their own defensive play. Dominik Szoboszlai missed an opportunity after taking the ball from Pau Torres, shooting directly at Martinez.Hugo Ekitike’s header goal was disallowed after VAR review showed he was offside from Szoboszlai’s cross. Martinez’s error then allowed Salah to score just before half-time, marking his 250th goal for Liverpool.Salah’s goal, his fifth of the season, places him as Liverpool’s third-highest scorer in club history, behind only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. The goal also ended Liverpool’s streak of conceding first in seven consecutive games.Villa entered the match having won their previous four league games, including victories over Tottenham and Manchester City. They were level on points with Liverpool before the game.Gravenberch, who had missed the previous weekend’s 3-2 loss at Brentford due to an ankle injury, scored Liverpool’s second goal. His shot deflected off Pau Torres, deceiving Martinez.Liverpool achieved their first clean sheet in 11 games. The team now prepares for upcoming matches against Real Madrid in the Champions League and Manchester City in the Premier League.Liverpool’s recent poor form has created a significant challenge in their title defence against Arsenal. The victory reduced their gap behind Arsenal to seven points, providing a starting point for their return to the title race.

Joao Pedro lifts Chelsea to glory against Spurs

Joao Pedro ended his goal drought for Chelsea by scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory against Tottenham at their home stadium on Saturday. The Brazilian striker scored his first goal since August 30, when he last found the net against Fulham, breaking a nine-game goalless streak across all competitions.Since his £60 million transfer from Brighton during the transfer window, the 24-year-old has only managed to score three times for Chelsea.Chelsea moved to fourth place in the Premier League standings after securing their third win in four matches, trailing Tottenham only on goal difference.Tottenham’s struggles at home continue, as they haven’t secured a victory at their stadium since defeating Burnley in the season opener in August.Their poor home form in 2025 began under previous manager Ange Postecoglou and has persisted under Frank’s leadership.Despite a League Cup defeat at Newcastle, Tottenham’s away performances have been stronger, including a convincing 3-0 win at Everton in their last league match.Tottenham supporters are showing increasing dissatisfaction with Frank’s tactical approach, which differs from the club’s traditional attacking philosophy. An early setback occurred when Lucas Bergvall suffered a head injury and was replaced by Xavi Simons as a concussion substitute.Bergvall showed resistance to the medical staff’s decision, pushing one of them before Frank stepped in to calm the situation.Alejandro Garnacho posed Chelsea’s primary attacking threat in the first half, testing Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario with long-range attempts.Vicario recovered from a knee injury to make a crucial save, denying Joao Pedro after a defensive error by Pedro Porro.Joao Pedro broke the deadlock in the 34th minute, capitalising on Moises Caicedo’s pressure on Simons and Van de Ven to score from close range.Frank expressed his frustration with Tottenham’s defensive errors by kicking a water bottle on the sideline.Joao Pedro nearly doubled his tally, but Vicario saved his powerful shot following Malo Gusto’s assist.Rodrigo Bentancur received a yellow card for a challenge on Reece James, which could have warranted a more severe punishment.Mohammed Kudus tested Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez just before halftime, but his shot was well saved. After the break, Enzo Fernandez missed a clear opportunity, heading over from James’ cross from ten yards out.Tottenham’s possession problems continued in the second half, leading to growing frustration among their supporters.Vicario was forced to make another save from Pedro Neto’s powerful attempt, while Tottenham failed to mount a serious comeback in the closing stages.

“Yeah, Liverpool were top of the league a few weeks ago, but in all honesty, they werenâ€t playing a huge amount better then than they are now,†writes Matt Dony. “That mad run of late winners wasnâ€t sustainable. Sometimes a team has good luck, sometimes they have bad luck, and you just have to hope it all evens out.

“This group of players is too good to be this mediocre for a long period, things will certainly click into place at some point. But I fear it may not be enough. I worry that (already) the title may be gone. The psychological impact of this spell will likely linger, for both Liverpool AND Arsenal.

“Still, a few pride-restoring wins in the short term would be a big help. And, hey, if not tonight, thereâ€s always Real Madrid and Man City to come in the next few days. What could possibly go wrong…â€

Arne Slot has said the Liverpool hierarchy share his views on the reasons for the teamâ€s slump and he will not abandon an attacking style in search of a way out. The head coach admitted that six defeats in seven games was unacceptable before Aston Villaâ€s visit on Saturday and denied making excuses for Liverpoolâ€s worst domestic run in 72 years.

Slot accepted the pressure was on before his makeshift team exited the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace on Wednesday. That pressure to arrest the slide, however, is not, he insisted, coming from Liverpoolâ€s owner, Fenway Sports Group, FSGâ€s chief executive of football, Michael Edwards, or the sporting director, Richard Hughes, after a summer transfer outlay of almost £450m.

Preamble

In a dim, distant past – five and a bit weeks ago – Liverpool were top of the Premier League, 12 points clear of 18th-placed Aston Villa. Now the two clubs are level on points, snuggled together in mid-table.

Villaâ€s recovery is a reminder that things change very quickly in football; that bad patches are almost unavoidable and you just have to ride them out. Easier said than done, especially when you:

a) are the reigning champions
b) are one of the biggest clubs in the world
c) spent eye-watering wonga in the summer and
d) exist in a culture that has gone completely mad

The good news for Arne Slot is that thereâ€s a simple solution: if Liverpool win tonight, the bloodlustful masses will look elsewhere. At least until the next game.

Pep Guardiola said it was too early for Manchester City to fret about Arsenalâ€s superb start to the Premier League season, and that his team were alive in their pursuit of reclaiming the title despite a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa on Sunday.

City trail Arsenal by six points after nine games but Guardiola is relaxed about the gap. “We have to try to close [it], Arsenal have been solid for many years, this time the concern is how we can improve – better, better, better – and to be close,†the City manager said.

“From my experience it [the season] is so long. So long. This is my experience. There are many teams there and we have a good test against Bournemouth [next weekend], who are doing very well. We will try to do our game.

“I was worried before the [September] international break when we were 14th in the table and they were seven or eight points in front. Our job is not to look at the table. If they win all their games and win the Premier League, congratulations to them, thatâ€s all we can do. But I have the feeling the team is alive, the team is good.â€

Guardiola, whose side travel to Swansea in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday night, added: “I donâ€t know how many teams can come here and play the way we played, with the courage, possession and chances. We have to be stable with that. I donâ€t live in October and November thinking: ‘Oh what is going to happen if we donâ€t win the Premier League?†So itâ€s game by game now.â€

City lost at Villa for the third successive season as Erling Haaland, who has 11 league goals this season, failed to score for the first time in 13 matches. Guardiola pointed to the quality of Unai Emeryâ€s side. “They are a Champions League team – unfortunately they are not there this season – but they are a top, top team and compete very well,†he said. “I admire them.â€

Haaland, who has 24 goals for club and country this season, clattered a post as he converted Omar Marmoushâ€s cross with a minute of normal time remaining but was offside. The Norway striker played on and Guardiola played down fears over a potential injury. “Hopefully heâ€s fine,†the manager said. “I didnâ€t speak with him.â€

Source link

Haaland is currently running away with the Premier League’s Golden Boot with 11 goals and such has been City’s reliance on him that the side’s next highest top scorer does not even play for them.

Unlucky Frenchman Maxime Esteve’s two goals at Etihad Stadium for Burnley puts him next on the list, with Tijjani Reijnders, Phil Foden, Matheus Nunes and Rayan Cherki contributing one apiece.

Boss Guardiola had asked for his wingers and midfielders to step but they failed to do so and it proved costly with, what could be, a damaging defeat come May.

Haaland did have opportunities against Villa but failed to take them, missing a gilt-edged chance immediately after his side went behind, running through and having a low shot smothered by Emiliano Martinez.

The Argentine goalkeeper plucked out another Haaland header from the air in the second half and when he was beaten just before the end, the offside flag came to his rescue.

Haaland collided heavily with the post in the aftermath, slumping down the tunnel with his head bowed at full-time and Guardiola said he had not spoken to his player, but “hopefully he is fine”.

With 15 goals scored so far and netting 34 in an injury-hit campaign last term, City cannot begin to bear the thought of being without their main man at any point this season.

Villa boss Emery said: “We tried tactically and in individual performance to get duels with him, intelligently, with the power we showed.

“Then we had some help from defensive cover and also the goalkeeper. We needed everything to stop him.”

City’s injury crisis meant Guardiola dipped into the transfer market in January by signing four players, and he brought in another six during the summer, but only keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Reijnders started at Villa.

Attackers Omar Marmoush and Cherki were introduced from the substitutes’ bench in the second half after recovering from injuries and the two now need to step up to ease the burden on Haaland’s shoulders.

City’s next league game comes at home to high-flying Bournemouth next Sunday and Guardiola has a decision to make whether he throws both of them in for that important encounter.

Sean Dyche is in the building. Now, can he last longer than 39 days at Nottingham Forest? Soon, the Vitality Stadiumâ€s rafters will be rocked by his baritone. He has made one change from the Porto game, and heâ€s already won one more game than Ange Postecoglou. A quick turnaround, though those acquainted with his spells at Burnley and Everton will know he is never one for rotation. He comes up against a Bournemouth team still in the top five, who have made one change from last week, Veljko Milosavljevic, just 18, at centre-back Eli Junior Kroupi, 19, will be their centre-forward after his two goals against Crystal Palace last week. The last time Dyche was here, in January with Everton, was his last game in charge of that club. Bournemouth won 1-0, the goal scored by David Brooks, on the bench here.

Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv say they will not accept any ticket allocation from Aston Villa should the decision to ban their supporters from next month’s Europa League match be overturned.

Birmingham’s Safety Advisory Group (SAG) – the body responsible for issuing safety certificates for matches – last week informed Villa no travelling fans would be permitted at the match in the city.

The decision was widely condemned, with Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy pledging that the government will “find the resources” to allow Maccabi fans to attend earlier on Monday.

But Maccabi Tel Aviv now say supporters will not travel for safety reasons – that “a toxic atmosphere has been created which makes the safety of our fans wishing to attend very much in doubt”.

A club statement said, external: “The wellbeing and safety of our fans is paramount, and from hard lessons learned we have taken the decision to decline any allocation offered on behalf of away fans and our decision should be understood in that context.

“We hope that circumstances will change and look forward to being able to play in Birmingham in a sporting environment in the near future.”

“We are deeply saddened Maccabi Tel Aviv have turned down their away fan allocation but we respect their right to do so,” a government spokesperson said.

They added it was “completely unacceptable” that the match has been “weaponised to stoke violence and fear by those who seek to divide us”.

“The government has been working around the clock to defend a basic principle – that football fans should be able to enjoy a game without fear of intimidation or violence.”

On Thursday, West Midlands Police said it had classified the fixture as “high risk” based on current intelligence and previous incidents, including “violent clashes and hate crime offences” between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv fans before a match in Amsterdam, in November 2024.

Nandy said ministers were working together to fund any necessary policing operation to allow away fans to attend, and the SAG would review the decision if West Midlands Police changed its risk assessment.

Nandy said the matter was wider than matchday security, adding it came “against the backdrop of rising antisemitism here and across the world, and an attack on a synagogue in Manchester in which two innocent men were killed”.

On Sunday, the Israeli Premier League derby between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv was cancelled before kick-off, after what police described as “public disorder and violent riots”.

Maccabi say the decision to call that game off was not down to their supporters and thanked the UK government for its efforts.

They said: “We believe that football should be about bringing people together not driving them apart.

“Our fans regularly travel all over Europe without incident and to suggest that the reason our fans cannot be allowed to travel is due to their behaviour is an attempt to distort reality.

“We acknowledge the efforts of the UK government and police to ensure both sets of fans can attend the match safely, and are grateful for the messages of support from across the footballing community.”

Aston Villa previously told their matchday stewards they did not have to work at the Maccabi Tel Aviv fixture, saying they understood some “may have concerns”.

Following Thursday’s announcement by the club about the impending fixture, Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the move “wrong” and said: “We will not tolerate antisemitism on our streets.”

Maccabi Tel Aviv will decline any tickets offered to their fans for the Europa League match at Villa Park, the Israeli club have said.

The local safety advisory group opted last week to block visiting fans from attending the tie against Aston Villa on 6 November after a risk assessment by West Midlands police, a decision that drew criticism from politicians including the prime minister, Keir Starmer.

There have been calls for the decision to be reversed, but a statement on the Maccabi website on Monday evening read: “The wellbeing and safety of our fans is paramount and, from hard lessons learned, we have taken the decision to decline any allocation offered on behalf of away fans, and our decision should be understood in that context.

“We hope that circumstances will change and look forward to being able to play in Birmingham in a sporting environment in the near future.â€

The statement questioned the motives of those seeking to justify the ban.

“We acknowledge the efforts of the UK government and police to ensure both sets of fans can attend the match safely, and are grateful for the messages of support from across the footballing community and society at large,†said the club. “Our first-team squad consists of Muslims, Christian and Jewish players and our fanbase also crosses the ethnic and religious divide. We have also been working tirelessly to stamp out racism within the more extreme elements of our fanbase.

“It is clear that various entrenched groups seek to malign the Maccabi Tel Aviv fanbase, most of whom have no truck with racism or hooliganism of any kind, and are exploiting isolated incidents for their own social and political ends.

“As a result of the hate-filled falsehoods, a toxic atmosphere has been created, which makes the safety of our fans wishing to attend very much in doubt.â€

Earlier on Monday, the culture secretary, Lisa Nandy, said the decision to bar supporters “chooses exclusion†of Jewish people.
