The Avalanche were founded as a WHA club in Quebec City during the league’s inaugural 1972 season, eventually moving to the NHL in 1979 with the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets and Hartford Whalers. In 1995, the Nordiques were purchased by then-Denver Nuggets owners COMSAT Entertainment Group, moved to Colorado and were renamed the Avalanche. The team has played in the Centennial State since.

The club’s throwbacks draw inspiration from a number of Quebecois elements. The color scheme is blue, red and white, a nod to the French flag and the province’s French-Canadian roots. The fleur-de-lis motif is also featured prominently, a similar honoring of French-Canadian pride and the province’s own flag.

The jersey’s central logo is an igloo designed to resemble the shape of the letter N and a hockey stick with a puck. The igloo motif pays homage to Quebec’s northern regions — “Nordiques” does translate to “Northerners” in English, after all.

Enhancing the throwback vibes is the fact that the Avalanche’s first game in their specialty uniforms will come against another team paying homage to its former roots.

On Thursday, Colorado will debut their new threads in a matchup that could pass for a WHA tribute game. Their opponent will be the Carolina Hurricanes… who are donning their own Hartford Whalers throwbacks. The Whalers officially relocated and rebranded to the Hurricanes in 1997, two years after the Nordiques became the Avalanche.

Colorado will play seven total games in their Nordiques specialty uniforms across the 2025-26 season.

Cleveland unveiled the uniform Wednesday, a revamped version of the navy blue alternate threads the team wore from 2005 to ’10 — a period that notably includes the then-LeBron James-led 2006-07 team that made a run to the 2007 NBA Finals.

The team is also using the jerseys to celebrate the franchise’s 55th anniversary.

The look, which the Cavaliers described as an “exact replica” in a news release, features a deep navy blue base, with wine and gold retro motifs. “Cleveland” is displayed on the chest of the jersey in the team’s early 2000s-themed throwback font with a gold outline.

Players’ names and numbers are displayed in white lettering with a gold outline on the back.

Shorts for the look include Cleveland’s iconic throwback “C” logo that features a sword piercing. Both the jersey and shorts are trimmed with the wine, navy and gold striped trim.

According to the Cavaliers, the original alternate uniforms were a nod to the “Miracle of Richfield” jerseys from the 1970s — an old-school look with white, yellow and red striped trimming that honored the 1975-76 season.

Cleveland will pair the jerseys with a Classic Edition court, which features elements from the 2000s-era Cavaliers’ hardwood.

The Cavaliers will sport the throwback look in 11 games, including during their Christmas Day matchup against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

They will debut the uniforms during their Nov. 5 home matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Utah Mammoth unveiled their new mascot, Tusky, during Wednesday night’s home opener against the Calgary Flames.

The Mammoth—formerly the Arizona Coyotes before the organization was transferred to the expansion franchise Utah Hockey Club—have started the season 1-2.

“We named the Utah Mammoth mascot Tusky to lean into our team’s ‘Tusks Up’ rallying cry,” Utah owners Ryan and Ashley Smith said in a statement. “Tusky is going to be a big part of our community, creating memorable experiences in and out of the arena. Fans can expect to see Tusky everywhere—from Mammoth games and team events to community gatherings, schools and hospitals.”

Tusky stands at 6’5″ and wears No. 00. The team has said he’s a great skater, shoots left-handed and his position is the center… of attention.

The team’s nickname, the Mammoths, is a nod to the prehistoric animal that lived in Utah during the last Ice Age.

“Tusky embodies the strength, momentum and earth-shaking presence of the herds that once roamed Utah more than 10,000 years ago,” the team said.

And listen, while Tusky might look a bit aggressively angry, you’d probably be a bit perturbed as well if you emerged from a block of ice in the middle of a hockey arena—like Tusky did on Wednesday night—and learned that the rest of your species was extinct.

Perhaps he’ll reach out to Gritty for consolation, who is assuredly is the only member of whatever his species is to ever exist.

Boston introduced its “Gold Standard” uniform on Wednesday evening, which is dedicated to the Celtics’ “timeless tradition of winning.”

The uniform features a white base accented with gold, with numbers and “Boston” also being featured with a gold swatch, representing the success the franchise has seen throughout its history.

Jersey names and the trimming on the numbers are outlined in black, making the jersey the first uniform in the franchise’s history to not feature green.

Just above the jock tag lies Red Auerbach’s signature, the Celtics’ former head coach for 16 seasons (1950-66). During his time as head coach, Auerbach led Boston to nine NBA championships, including a historic run of eight consecutive titles from 1959 to 1966. He held a 795-397 regular-season record and a 90-58 postseason record with Boston.

On the back of the jersey’s neckline lies an 18-time champion patch, honoring its 18 NBA titles from its first in 1957, to mostly recently in 2024 after defeating the Dallas Mavericks in five games.

Boston is no stranger to donning a gold hue on its jerseys. It featured gold trimming on its 2019-20, 2022-23 and 2023-24 City Edition uniforms.

The Celtics haven’t said when they’ll wear the City Edition uniform this season.

The Boston Celtics’ City Edition uniforms for the 2025-26 season were officially unveiled on Wednesday.

The jerseys forgo the team’s typical green color for a white and gold look, with the organization releasing photos highlighting the details of the attire in an Instagram post.

The gold is a nod to Boston’s 18 championships, the most among all NBA teams.

The names and numbers of each jersey also contain a black trim. Meanwhile, the signature of legendary head coach Red Auerbach is featured near the bottom of the uniform.

The Celtics’ storied history has also been a theme for past City Edition jerseys, as their alternate uniforms for the 2020-21 season were modeled after the championship banners hanging in the rafters of TD Garden.

Boston is only one season removed from its most recent NBA Finals victory in 2024, although head coach Joe Mazzulla’s team will look vastly different heading into the 2025-26 season.

Jayson Tatum is in danger of missing the entire year as he recovers from a torn Achilles that he suffered in the 2025 playoffs, while starters Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porziņģis were both moved during the offseason in separate trades.

As the Celtics introduce several fresh faces to their rotation surrounding Jaylen Brown, they’ll also have a new City Edition look.

The Washington Wizards unveiled their City Edition uniforms Monday, a nod to the iconic gold alternate look the franchise wore from 2006 to 2009.

Instead of duplicating the previously worn all-gold uniforms, the jersey — which debuts Nov. 16 against the Brooklyn Nets — includes a black stripe in the middle with a white one above “Washington” across the chest. Those elements are taken from Washington’s 2021 “mixtape” City Edition look.

Two black stripes also outline the neckline, shoulders and jersey numbers, with a black side panel on the shorts and waistband.

The black-and-gold uniform design had been a request from fans and players since the City Edition series began in 2017, according to Wizards senior vice president of marketing Rebecca Winn.

“When Nike directed us to ‘remix’ a former City Edition, we immediately thought of the classic Wizards uniform first worn in 2006,” Winn said in a news release.

Inside the “Washington” across the chest is a silhouette of the Washington Monument. The belt buckle includes a revamped Wizards logo. The D.C. hand logo is featured in white with a gold outline on the right side.

In another reference to the 2021 City Edition design, a “DMV” insignia — referencing the D.C., Maryland, Virginia area — appears on the left side of the shorts. The 2021 uniform marked the first time “DMV” appeared on a D.C. area sports team’s uniform.

The Wizards will wear the uniform 29 times during the 2025-26 season. A matching City Edition court will be unveiled at a later date.
