A Ruben Amorim pirouette and revolving fist-pump greeted Bryan Mbeumo putting Manchester United 3-0 up and told the tale of how precious this third consecutive league victory is.

Yet the goal came on 61 minutes and still United found themselves clinging on at 3-2 deep into added time before Mbeumo smashed home his second. Almost instantly Anthony Taylor blew for time and “Glory, Glory Man United†blared out at Old Trafford.

So Brighton, winners of three of the last four meetings, motor back to the south coast defeated and Amorimâ€s team are starting to build some momentum. They are fourth overnight, thanks to Liverpool losing at Brentford.

The Portuguese was not happy at the late near-capitulation but can be content with how his tactic of having Luke Shaw move up from left centre-back to harry Georginio Rutter led to Mbuemoâ€s first strike having already played a part in Casemiroâ€s goal. Shaw certainly looked to have fouled the No 10 in the build-up but, with the video assistant referee uninterested, Mbeumo raced on to a cute Benjamin Sesko pass to fire a 20-yard finish which went through Lewis Dunkâ€s legs and beat Bart Verbruggen to the goalkeeperâ€s left.

Cut to the head coachâ€s celebration and verses of “Ruben Amorim, Ruben Amorim†from the ecstatic home fans, who heralded at the close a third consecutive Premier League win in the same season for a first time since February 2024.

But this was confirmed only after Patrick Dorguâ€s pulling down of Yankuba Minteh precipitated United conceding twice. First, Danny Welbeck blazed a free-kick beyond Senne Lammens, the United goalkeeper surely disappointed not to deal with it better as the ball went at him rather than for a corner. In added time James Milnerâ€s corner from the right caught United slumbering and the unmarked Charalampos Kostoulas headed in.

In all this were signs of the project in progress United still are, but it finished as a good dayâ€s work that began with two penalty shouts being turned down by Taylor. An Amad Diallo jink past Maxim De Cuyper caused the left-back to clip him but the referee was unmoved – to home ire. Further fury followed when Dunk seemed to grab Mbeumo in the area.

Amorim spoke of attitude being key and his men kept on and got their reward. The ball dropped to Bruno Fernandes, whose instant no-look pass to Casemiro was a moment to grace a 300th United appearance. The Brazilian tapped the ball left to his compatriot Matheus Cunha and a touch to tee it up was followed by a superb curling finish that skimmed past Verbruggenâ€s fingertips into the bottom left corner.

This was the £62.5m summer signingâ€s first goal, in his 10th appearance. If “about time†is a fair call on the strikeâ€s arrival, Unitedâ€s delight soon doubled as Amorimâ€s deployment of Shaw as a pickpocket hit the first jackpot.

A Jan Paul van Hecke pass aimed for Rutter was nicked from him by Shaw. Casemiro took aim from 25-yards, the ball deflected off Yasin Ayari, left Verbruggen stranded, and in rolled Unitedâ€s second.

United were cruising and it should have been even better by the break. Slick interplay involving Fernandes put Sesko in but he sliced wildly off target from only yards out.

Rutter did the same at the other end, though he may have been hurt moments before, impeding his movement. There was, though, zero excuse for the amateurish effort Carlos Baleba ballooned over as the second half began – hardly a prime advert for a player wanted by United in the previous window.

Seconds later, Fernandes showed Baleba how it should be done. Cunha found Diallo deep in Brightonâ€s area, he picked his captain out, and Fernandesâ€s pile-driver stung Verbruggenâ€s palms. The Brighton keeper made another routine save from Sesko while Lammens had to be far more alert when a curving Minteh cross missed everyone and was sneaking into the right corner before the keeper tipped it out.

So Unitedâ€s only home outing in a period of 50 days, with no fixtures at Old Trafford until 24 November, ended in victory: a fine way to sign off.

Ratcliffe was at Old Trafford to watch this latest triumph. It is only the second time under Amorim that United have won three games in a row. Without combining the start of last season and the end of the one before, it is the first time they have won three league games in a row since February 2024 under Erik ten Hag.

A notoriously blunt speaker, did Ratcliffe really mean it when he said Amorim needed three years to prove his worth, or was he just buying the former Sporting coach some time?

It does seem Ratcliffe is on board with Amorim’s vision. The improved results, Amorim says, are more helpful in offering a glimpse of a better future to the United fans.

“I never had that feeling of embarrassment, of what I was doing or not winning games,” he said. “I always felt Jim believed and knew what we were doing.

“It is more with the fans. Facing the fans is different in this moment.

“But I feel the urgency of not losing this moment. Everything in football can change in one week.”

Amorim’s words are wise. Yet there does seem to be substance in what United have delivered over the past three games.

In beating Sunderland and Brighton at Old Trafford, they have secured home wins against two sides that have won at Stamford Bridge.

No-one would dismiss Chelsea as top-five contenders, so why should United be different?

Why should they be different when they have Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, jointly signed in the summer at an overall cost of £130m, bringing a drive and purpose to their attack which did not exist before.

Both scored in this latest win. Cunha for the first time this season. Mbeumo now has five.

Amorim was eager to praise both in their different ways.

“Matheus feels more confident the harder the game,” said Amorim. “He wants the responsibility. Today he defended really well and when he has the ball I have no concerns.

“He was struggling about not scoring goals, he can try to hide but I understood.

“Bryan is a working machine, he is so good in transitions and his connection with Amad [Diallo] is really good.

“When we felt this player wants to come here no matter what, whether we were in the Champions League or not, we do everything to bring him here.”

The 3pm kick-offs have finished. What a day itâ€s been for our friends in the north, as Newcastle beat Fulham 2-1 at St James†Park, while Sunderland shock Chelsea by the same scoreline at Stamford Bridge to rise to second place. Billy Munday has the details in Clockwatch. None of that has any bearing on Manchester United or Brighton, who remain where they were this morning. Both teams can move into fourth for a couple of hours at least with a win at Old Trafford tonight. Sunderland in second, though!

Pre-match patter. Ruben Amorim doesnâ€t much care for the opinions of Arne Slot …

Manchester United make two changes in the wake of their 2-1 win at Anfield last weekend. Benjamin Å eÅ¡ko comes in for Mason Mount, who drops to the bench, while last weekâ€s win-securing hero Harry Maguire doesnâ€t feature at all, Leny Yoro taking his place in defence. Maguire picked up an injury during training this week. Tyrell Malacia is named in a Premier League squad for the first time this season.

Brighton & Hove Albion make one change after their 2-1 home win over Newcastle. Itâ€s ostensibly a defensive one, swapping in Maxim De Cuyper for Diego Gómez, who drops to the bench. Danny Welbeck, a member of the last Manchester United squad to win the Premier League, in 2012-13, returns to Old Trafford on a hot streak of four goals in three games, one more than heâ€d managed in his previous 15.

Preamble

Manchester United, having just beaten Sunderland and Liverpool, look to make it three Premier League wins on the bounce this evening. The windâ€s behind them under Ruben Amorim for the very first time! Only problem is, their visitors tonight are Brighton & Hove Albion, who have won on each of their last three trips to Old Trafford, and six of the last seven League meetings between the clubs. Never mind the wind behind; for the Seagulls, itâ€s been a breeze. Having said all that, Brighton are otherwise as gloriously unpredictable as their hosts, so this game is both fascinating and potentially rollickingly good entertainment. Kick-off is at 5.30pm (and we say this for the last time in a while, because remember the clocks fall back tonight, kids) BST. Itâ€s on!

Manchester United vs Brighton: Premier League preview

There’s a reason neutrals tune in when Man United play Liverpool. Sure, it’s fun to watch two teams whose supporters loathe each other but the attraction of that particular fixture is that it’s either going to be closer than the form guide suggests or one of them is going to get walloped.

Last weekend’s was a derby with a difference. Liverpool were suddenly finding ways to lose and United raised their game at Anfield. It had Harry Maguire winner written all over it.

As entertaining as it was, it didn’t tell us a great deal about Amorim’s progress. United step up against Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea. In a strange sort of way it’s actually Brighton who represent more of a test.

Graduating from the Manchester City youth team to Pep Guardiola’s senior squad is no easy feat.

Even a prodigious talent such as Cole Palmer felt he was best served moving on from the club in order to get playing regular first-team football, such is the challenge of getting past a host of the planet’s best players in the pecking order.

McAtee’s first season across the Pennines saw him play a key role in their Championship promotion-winning campaign, with goal away at Blackpool in late December, when he ran from just outside his own penalty area to score, was the perfect illustration of how he had found his feet mid-season.

“It was a rollercoaster,” he tells FourFourTwo, referring to the campaign as a whole, rather than one of Blackpool’s main tourist attractions. “The first half of the season wasn’t so good, then around Christmas time I kicked on, got back into the team and that was probably my favourite year of football so far.

“We got to the FA Cup semi-final, although we drew City, which meant I couldn’t play – that was a pain in the arse. I remember watching the draw, seeing we’d drawn City, I was gutted.

“But the highlight of the season was getting promoted – it was amazing.”

McAtee, who joined Nottingham Forest in a permanent deal in the summer, returned for a second stint in South Yorkshire the following season, but that did go to plan, as the Blades finished rock bottom of the Premier League, shipping in a record 104 goals.

“The second year was brutal, not nice at all,” he admits. “We struggled, I think we won three games.

“And when we got beat 8-0 by Newcastle, that was horrible. I didn’t want to go in for the next three days, I wanted to hide under my bed. It’s something I’d never want to go back to, but it was a lesson about trying to keep your head, trying to stay positive.

“Don’t spiral into reading the comments online, letting them get in your head. It was a tough time, but I learned a lot.”

Ruben Amorim has insisted that he does not care about Arne Slotâ€s apparent criticism of Manchester Unitedâ€s style of play in their 2-1 victory against Liverpool last Sunday.

Liverpoolâ€s head coach cited Unitedâ€s “low block†and “long balls†after Unitedâ€s first win at Anfield since 2016. Slot sought to point out that his comments had been complimentary when speaking on Friday. Speaking himself soon after, Amorim gave his response to the Dutchmanâ€s initial comments. “I donâ€t care what Slot is saying, what people are saying about our team,†he said. “I can watch the game and say we can do better and we need to do better in the future but sometimes you need to adapt to the game. So I donâ€t need anyone to evaluate my team. I can evaluate my team and I am really clear that we should play better with the ball and we are going to try to do that in this game.â€

Bruno Fernandes will make his 300th appearance for United when Brighton visit Old Trafford on Saturday and Amorim was asked who beyond the captain maintains the standards expected at the club. “Harry Maguire. Diogo Dalot tries to do that,†he said. “Luke Shaw can show in some moments by the way he plays, when heâ€s so focused. I think Nous [Mazraoui] has a good impact. Licha [Lisandro Martínez], he is really important in this.â€

Victory over Liverpool means United have finally won two Premier League games in a row under Amorim. “It has to do a lot with attitude,†the Portuguese said when asked how this was achieved. “Iâ€m not saying my players donâ€t want to win or run, but we need to sometimes [when] itâ€s getting harder [in matches] to force ourselves to do the basics. If you look at Brighton and the way they play, every team that pressed a little higher struggled and they won. We need to be prepared – not just against the top teams but against opponents that are [also] really good.â€

Fernandes joined United from Sporting for £46.5m in January 2020 and has been one of the few consistently high performers for the club in the intervening years. The 31-year-old considered joining Al-Hilal in the summer after the Saudi Arabian club made a £100m offer for him but decided to remain at Old Trafford after speaking to his family and Amorim. Talking before his landmark game for United, the Portuguese, whose contract expires in June 2028, insisted he will discuss his future again only after next summerâ€s World Cup.

“Iâ€ve seen a lot of people talking that I had an agreement to go already next season. If the club has done that agreement, it wasnâ€t with me,†said Fernandes. “I havenâ€t spoken with anyone. I could tell you that there are still people talking to me and saying that they will be very eager to have me next year, of course. But from my side, thatâ€s not talked about. Because my agent also knows how I work, so if he wants to talk to me, it will be after the World Cup. Because until then, I wonâ€t speak to anyone.â€

Fernandes went on to say that Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who signed for United in the summer, are the type of personalities United require, before going on to to praise their fellow new recruits Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens. “We need big characters because at this club being good players sometimes is not enough because of the pressure,†said the captain. “Cunha has that good arrogance to do the good things. Bryan, the same. Heâ€s not afraid to take the ball, do his play. We brought two players who were aware of the Premier League also. And then we bought a very young goalkeeper [Lammens] and a centre-forward [and] they hit the ground flying [running]. We know Ben will be judged by scoring goals or not. But apart from that, heâ€s been doing great. Heâ€s got his goals already [too].

“Sometimes I get upset with [Mbeumo] in training because heâ€s like, one touch more, and I say: ‘Bryan, you donâ€t need that. You can one touch and shoot because youâ€re more than able. You did that against us when you were at Brentford. You just have to make it for us now. The shirts have changed, but youâ€re the same player so we need that from you.â€â€

The Bundesliga champions are “fully involved in the race” for Guéhi, 25, with plans to challenge Real Madrid and Liverpool for his signature. They could also look to 25-year-old Schlotterbeck as a second reinforcement if both Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-Jae leave the Allianz Arena, with Upamecano yet to agree to terms on a new contract. EXPERT TAKE

ESPN’s Alex Kirkland looks at what the future might hold for Conor Gallagher at Atlético Madrid:

Conor Gallagher has never quite found his place at Atlético Madrid. Even if some of his qualities — above all his work-rate and energy — look tailor-made for a Diego Simeone team, the coach hasn’t appeared convinced by the midfielder, signed for €42m in 2024.

Gallagher has started just two of Atlético’s nine LaLiga games so far this season, with seven substitute appearances. Last year, in his debut campaign, he started 19 league games, and was introduced as a sub 13 times.

Simeone doesn’t often pick Gallagher in central midfield, in theory his best position. When he does play, he tends to feature out wide in a midfield four, often on the left. The coach prefers Pablo Barrios and Koke — both more creative, reliable passers, with better technique — in the middle, and now has options like Giuliano Simeone, Thiago Almada, Alex Baena and Nico González on the flanks.

Gallagher’s attitude is excellent, he’s popular with teammates and fans, and he is a useful impact player off the bench. But you wonder how long he’ll be happy with that role. A move back to the Premier League seems inevitable at some point. The only question is when it happens.

Despite making a somewhat steady start to the season, Leeds are without a win in their last three Premier League outings.

A respectable 2-2 draw with Bournemouth preceded losses to both Tottenham and Burnley, and now manager Farke is set to deal with an additional headache when it comes to his latest team selection.

As relayed by Farke in his pre-match press conference previewing Friday’s game, the Whites will be without forwards Noah Okafor and Willy Gnonto, as the pair continue to step up their respective returns from injury.

“We have to take some late decisions,” began the Leeds boss. “Okafor and Gnonto making good progress, but not able to complete team training this week. More realistic for Noah to be involved. Some illness in the group. [Ethan] Ampadu and [Pascal] Struijk missed team training.”

Defenders Ampadu and Struijk missing out will cause further problems for Leeds, and it is likely that 26-year-old summer signing Jaka Bijol is set for a Premier League debut.

Having so far only played in the EFL Cup, Bijol will be keen to make an impression if called upon, having arrived from Udinese in the summer. He has so far been unable to disrupt the longstanding partnership of Joe Rodon and Struijk.

In FourFourTwo‘s view, West Ham are unlikely to get a better chance at success than on Friday evening, with Leeds’ injury list something of a real worry for Farke.

Predicted Leeds line-up: Darlow, Bogle, Rodon, Bijol, Gudmundsson; Longstaff, Gruev, Stach; Harrison, Aaronson, Calvert-Lewin.

Virgil van Dijk has said he called a players†meeting after Liverpoolâ€s defeat by Manchester United to lift the mood and remind the squad how quickly their fortunes could change. Liverpool ended a run of four consecutive defeats with a 5-1 rout of Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday, with Van Dijk one of five goalscorers. Arne Slot changed personnel and formation to spark an improvement in Germany.

His captain believes the clear-the-air talks contributed to the recovery. “On Monday, everyone was sad because we lost to Man United at home,†Van Dijk said. “We havenâ€t lost many games at home during my time at Liverpool. It was tough under the circumstances, so on Monday we came together, but it wasnâ€t a crisis meeting. We all know how things can change. Weâ€re only in October.

“Nobody wants to lose four games in a row, but it was the situation we faced. We had to stay calm and block out all the noise from the outside because thatâ€s something you canâ€t control. The only way to get out of a situation like that is to stay together, keep your mind on the task ahead, try to improve, keep the confidence, embrace the moment.

“They are all things that are easier to say than actually do. But if you want to get out of it, you have to do it. We live in a world now where there is always noise – always something to be said, always someone who knows is better. We have to stay focused on ourselves.â€

Van Dijk said there was a noticeable improvement in the atmosphere after the players†meeting. “Before my meeting yes [the mood was downbeat] but after my meeting everyone was happy.

“We had a proper debrief with the manager, but we also had a separate one as players. I wanted to say some things … Itâ€s not something I do after every game. Letâ€s keep it that way.â€

In 2023, AEW introduced the Continental Classic, which is a round-robin tournament that occurs throughout November and December to crown the AEW Continental Champion. This year will mark the third ever Continental Classic in history, with the finals of the tournament taking place at Worlds End like usual, but it seems like many of the round-robin matchups will take place overseas this time around.

This coming December, AEW is scheduled to debut in the city of Manchester, England, leading company President Tony Khan to confirm in an interview with “Z100 New York” that multiple Continental Classic matches will take place during their tour of the United Kingdom.

“We’ve been to the UK, we’re going back. We’re going to debut in Manchester later this year. I’m really excited about that. I’m excited to bring the Continental Classic to Manchester and back to Cardiff which is a great venue for us. But Manchester will be a new city … next year I think particularly in Europe there can be more opportunities. We’re definitely going back to London next year. Everyone knows that. I’m very excited to bring AEW All In back to Wembley Stadium.”

Khan also touched on the company returning to Australia next year for AEW Grand Slam, stating that he’s excited to bring the Jacksonville-based promotion to more cities in the country. “I’m continued [with] really excitement about going back to Australia and seeing new places in Australia. We had a great debut in Brisbane and I’m excited to go back to Australia and visit more cities over the coming years and also to go tour Europe more extensively.”
