Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi finished with a hat trick on the final day of MLS’ regular season Saturday to clinch the 2025 MLS Golden Boot award.
Messi’s three goals, along with an assist, helped Miami to a 5-2 win at Nashville SC. The Argentina forward had 29 goals in just 28 regular-season matches to finish as MLS’ top scorer for the first time.
– Messi tracker: All goals, assists, key moments
His nearest challengers were LAFC’s Denis Bouanga and Nashville SC’s Sam Surridge, who both finished tied for second with 24 goals.
Only three players — Carlos Vela (34), Josef MartÃnez (31) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (30) — have scored more goals in an MLS regular season than Messi’s 29.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also had a league-high 19 assists, which, along with his 29 goals, left Messi one shy of Vela’s MLS record of 49 goal contributions in a regular season.
“It’s so obvious that [Messi] gives us an advantage every night,” Inter Miami defender Ian Fray said. “There aren’t enough words to say about him.”

Messi’s contributions propelled Inter Miami to third place in the Eastern Conference, securing home-field advantage for the playoffs. The team will face Nashville again in the first round of the 2025 MLS playoffs.
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano shared in his postgame news conference that Game 1 of the three-game series will take place Friday, though MLS will announce the schedule Sunday.
Mascherano has insisted that Messi has done more than enough on the field to earn the 2025 MLS MVP award, which would make him the first player to win it in consecutive seasons.
“Well, what can I say about Leo? The truth is, well, today he was exceptional, as he usually is,” Mascherano said.
“Clearly, I think if anyone had any doubts about what his regular season was like, the reality is that he’s cleared any doubts. They’ll surely give him the MVP award for everything he’s shown.
“Talking about the three goals he scored, well, happy for him because he helped us win the game again.”
Messi won the 2024 MLS MVP trophy after recording 20 goals and 16 assists to inspire Inter Miami to the Supporters’ Shield and break the league record for most points recorded in a season.
Messi’s hat trick Saturday was second in MLS. His first came in Inter Miami’s 6-2 win over the New England Revolution on the final day of the 2024 regular season.
He scored his first of the game against Nashville from the top of the box in the 35th minute to give Inter Miami a 1-0 lead.
Messi was awarded a penalty kick in the 63rd minute and converted to tie the score 2-2.
He completed the hat trick in the 81st minute, scoring from the center of the box on a left-footed shot and extending Inter Miami’s lead to 4-2.
Messi also had an assist on Telasco Segovia‘s score in stoppage time.

SALT LAKE CITY — Nick Schmaltz came into the night scoreless over the Utah Mammoth’s first four games this season. He broke through in a big way Friday night against the San Jose Sharks.
Schmaltz had three goals and an assist, and the Mammoth beat the Sharks 6-3 for their third win in four games.
“I feel like I’ve had a lot of chances early on in the season here,” Schmaltz said. “I’m trying to shoot the puck more, take it to the net, be around the net more. Couple guys made some great plays to find me in open areas. It was fun to see [them] go in there for me.”
Utah coach Andre Tourigny believed Schmaltz was due to get on the scoreboard.

“Since the start of the season, he’s been playing really good,” Tourigny said. “He’s had a lot of opportunities. He reloads really well, both sides of the puck, he’s a threat. He gets inside a lot. It was a matter of time … today was the day.”
Schmaltz scored his first goal 9:39 into the first period as he converted a one-timer off a pass from Logan Cooley on the inside edge of the right circle on a five-on-three power play.
Schmaltz got his second of the night less than four minutes later as he got a pass from Clayton Keller and fired a shot into the top left corner past Yaroslav Askarov.
The Sharks tied it with a pair of goals 1:50 apart in the second.
After Liam O’Brien regained Utah’s lead with 3:51 left in the middle period, Schmaltz finished his second career hat trick 54 seconds into the third. He got a pass from Keller — who had assists on each of Schmaltz’s three goals — from behind the net and scored from the left side to push Utah’s lead to 4-2.

“It was awesome, especially in front of our home fans,” said Schmaltz, whose first hat trick came for Arizona against St. Louis on Jan. 26, 2023. “Shout-out to my grandpa, he’s watched me play two times now, in Arizona and here, and he’s seen a hat trick both times.”
Schmaltz then set up Keller for a goal with 8½ minutes to go to push the Mammoth’s lead to 6-2, giving both players four points on the night.
“Just a high give-and-go. I saw him open, and he made a great shot to finish it.”
NEW YORK (AP) — Bo Horvat tied it short-handed in the second period, scored the go-ahead goal on the power play and finished off the hat trick with an empty-netter with 8.1 seconds left to help the New York Islanders pick up their first win of the season by rallying to defeat the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 on Thursday night.
Seven seconds after Trent Frederic high-sticked Matthew Schaefer,Horvat beat Stuart Skinnerwith 4:46 left to bring fans — some of whom were booing the home team earlier — to their feet. Mat Barzalhad the Islanders’ first goal and the primary assist on Horvat’s game-winner, while David Rittich stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced at the other end of the ice in his Islanders debut.
Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard gave the puck away on an inexplicable turnover in the neutral zone to set up Barzal’s goal and was the last player back on the power play who let Horvat past him for a breakaway on Skinner. Bouchard, who is the fourth-highest-paid player at his position in the NHL and tied for 14th among all players at a salary cap hit of $10.5 million, also coughed the puck up to cause several quality scoring chances against.
Leon Draisaitl scored on the power play, his third goal this season, off a feed from Connor McDavid, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had Edmonton’s other goal. Skinner was hardly to blame in allowing three goals on 24 shots as teammates hung him out to dry on multiple occasions with mistakes all over in a back-and-forth, fast-paced game, including Frederic’s ill-timed penalty.
The Islanders will take the two points however they can get them after opening with losses at Pittsburgh and at home to Washington and Winnipeg. Schaefer, playing against McDavid for the first time as No. 1 draft picks a decade apart, skated 17:38 in his fourth game in the league.

OSLO, Norway — Manchester City star Erling Haaland twice missed a penalty for Norway against Israel but still wound up with a hat trick in a 5-0 World Cup qualifying win on Saturday.
Haaland’s first penalty was hit low and saved by Daniel Peretz. But Polish referee Szymon Marciniak ordered the kick to be retaken because the goalkeeper had moved off his line too soon.

He tried the other way the second time, aiming for the corner, but Peretz guessed correctly again and palmed his effort away as Haaland looked on disbelievingly.
Haaland made up for it later in the first half when he scored with a low strike after latching onto Alexander Sørloth‘s pass, his 10th goal in the qualifying campaign.
The Norway star went on to score two more goals to take his tally to 12, the most in UEFA qualifying matches by far. He also has 12 goals in nine matches for City this season, taking his club tally to 136 in 155 games for the club.
The hat trick for Haaland took his total for Norway to 51 in his career to extend his lead as the country’s all-time leader in goals. He reached the 50-goal mark in just 46 games, whereas it took Harry Kane 71 matches with England, Brazil’s Neymar 74 and Kylian Mbappé 90 games with France to hit the half-century milestone.
Record eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi took 107 games to hit 50 for Argentina, and Cristiano Ronaldo needed 114 games with Portugal.
The win keeps Norway perfect in qualifying with six wins from six games. They lead Italy by nine points in Group I, but the Italians can still theoretically catch them for top spot and an automatic bid to the World Cup next summer.
Norway have not played in a World Cup since 1998.
There were peaceful pro-Palestinian protests before the match in Oslo. A police line formed close to the stadium but at a measured distance from the protesters, some of whom chanted “Shut down the embassy,” while others carried red cards and one woman held up a small sign saying “Game Over Israel.”
A few dozen fans stayed to continue protesting outside the stadium once the match started.
The venue was almost full, with 22,000 to 23,000 spectators inside. Capacity was reduced by 3,000, as seats were made unavailable near Israeli fans and in the front row due to security measures.

NEW YORK — Wanting to cap Torontoâ€s season with a title, Jeff Hoffman suggested changing hats.
Six losses in seven games had dropped the Blue Jays into a tie with the New York Yankees for the AL East lead. That prompted the 32-year-old reliever to send Scott Blinn, Torontoâ€s director of major league clubhouse operations, scrambling to find those retro caps with white panels in the style the Blue Jays wore when they won the 1992 World Series.
Toronto is 5-0 in the historical headgear over the past two weeks as it takes a 2-0 lead into Game 3 of the best-of-five AL Division Series against the Yankees.
“I didnâ€t pack another hat,†manager John Schneider said with a smile.
Following a 7-1 loss to the Red Sox at Rogers Centre on Sept. 24, Hoffman suggested to Binn a switch to the 1992 headgear, which was used during Major League Baseballâ€s Hall of Fame weekend promotion from July 25-27 — not because heâ€s superstitious, but because he liked the look. Wearing the white panels, the Blue Jays had taken two of three at Detroit to finish a four-game series.
“`We need a new combo. What should we wear?â€â€ Hoffman said, recounting the player discussion. “And I said, `I know what we should wear. We should wear the blues, the blue jerseys with the white-panel hat.†And they all kind of like perked up because they didnâ€t know I knew about them.â€
Blinn found the caps in a Rogers Centre storage room. Toronto beat Boston 6-1 on Sept. 25, wearing blue alternate jerseys and the white-panel chapeaus. The next night, a Friday, the Blue Jays were required to wear Nike Connect uniforms topped by pitch-blue caps, suggested by Lake Ontario at night. They beat Tampa Bay 4-2 to remain tied with the Yankees.
On most days, players get to decide which uniforms to wear. Given that option for the final weekend of the regular season, the Jays stuck with the blue jerseys and white-panel hats. They closed with 5-1 and 13-4 wins over the Rays to win the division on a tiebreaker over New York.
Toronto finished the season 58-45 in blue caps, 20-17 in the two-tone hats with powder blue visors and navy crowns that were launched with the return of powder blue alternate jerseys in 2020, 8-3 in Nike Connect games and 5-1 in the white-panel throwbacks. They were also 1-2 in Armed Forces caps with beige camouflage crowns and olive visors from May 16-18, 1-0 in red for Canada Day on July 1 and 1-0 in light blue crowns and red visors for July 4.
The Blue Jays stayed with the white-panel caps and blue jerseys in the first two games of the Division Series, romping over the Yankees 10-1 and 13-7.
“I just wear whatâ€s in my locker. I just will wear what weâ€re told to wear,†four-time All-Star outfielder George Springer said, spurning superstitions.
Toronto wore caps with white panels for all games from its inception in 1977 through 1990 — with white jerseys at home — then switched to all blue caps for road games in 1991. The Blue Jays dropped the white panel at home on July 6, 1991, in the midst of a five-game losing streak, going with all blue, and beat the visiting Chicago White Sox 5-1 behind six shutout innings from Dave Stewart.
“Iâ€m not sure what the blue caps were all about,†Stewart said after the game, his 150th career victory. “But we won, so maybe weâ€ll wear them again.â€
Blue Jays equipment manager Jeff Ross thought of the change “just to see how it looks with the white uniform.â€
“It had nothing to do with the losing streak,†Ross said at the time. “Weâ€d been doing so well at home so I didnâ€t want to do it while we were going well. This was the time to do it. It looks great after a win.â€
Toronto went on to win its second straight World Series title in 1993, and the all-blue caps remained for most games. The Blue Jays brought back the white panels on Aug. 16, 2015, for a “Turn Back the Dial†promotion honoring the 30th anniversary of the teamâ€s first AL East title, and beat the Yankees 3-1. Toronto then used the white panels at least once per season and as many as 27 times in 2018 and 24 the following year, according to uniformlineup.com, but then decreased its frequency.
The team hadnâ€t worn them since Aug. 27, 2022, before they returned this year for MLBâ€s Hall of Fame weekend promotion.
“Weâ€ve been playing well since weâ€ve been wearing them, which is hard for my argument of, hey, it doesnâ€t matter what hat weâ€re wearing guys, like, we just need to play good,†Hoffman said.
And even Springerâ€s disdain for superstition only goes so far. For instance, he wonâ€t think of stepping on a foul line.
“That,†he said, “would be crazy.â€
Cooper Foster scored three goals, Nic Whitehead had two assists and the Ottawa 67’s defeated the visiting Erie Otters 4-1 in Ontario Hockey League action on Saturday at TD Place.
Kohyn Eshkawkogan also scored for the unbeaten 67’s (4-0-0-0), who outshot the visitors 58-16.
