M.S. volleyball beats Wyalusing

By: Ed Weaver  /  September 9, 2013

The Wellsboro Middle School volleyball team struggled keeping their nerves in alignment again on Saturday but held on to beat Wyalusing, 2-0.

Wyalusing had several good servers which often made it difficult for the girls to make a good pass to the setter, but the Lady Hornets held on to take Wyalusing down in 2 games, 25-20 and 25-23.

“This will be an area of concentration in practice this week,” said head coach Jenn Outman. “With that said, several Wellsboro girls retaliated with powerful and consistent serves to Wyalusing.”

Grace Feil, Sydney Tremper, Brianne Keane, and Rachael Tuttle all lead the team in steady, authoritative serves. Lizzie Poirier led the team in spikes and kills. Brianna Keane did an amazing job of finding each pass and getting it to the middle or outside position.

“Unfortunately though, the score was closer than it should have been,” Outman continued. “My philosophy is to implement the ‘Bump, Set, Spike’ as often as possible, even if there are mistakes. When opposing teams hit the ball back in one hit, it makes this expectation challenging. Often times my team wants to play that type of game instead of their own. Once the team found their confidence and rhythm they began to control the game.”

In the B game, the Lady Hornets won 2-0, beating Wyalusing 25-14 and 26-24.

With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 2-0 on the year.

Marple to play volleyball at Le Moyne

By: Ed Weaver  /  May 16, 2013

Marple led the state-qualifying team with 64 aces, and recorded 101 kills, 190 service points, and 267 digs during the 2012 season.

“It was a really long process and I debated back and forth for months and months, but I’m really excited to attend Le Moyne next fall,” Marple said. “I know it’s going to be very competitive and it’s going to challenge me to improve my game. I can’t wait to get started.”

Marple will be joining a familiar face when she steps on campus in the fall as her sister Alex Marple is a member of the girls basketball team.

“I’m so happy to be going to school with my sister. We’ve always been really close and rarely, if ever, argue so it’s going to be great to be so close to her again.

“I’ve missed her, and being around her again will be so much fun and i think it will make the transition a lot easier for me. It’s going to be awesome and I couldn’t be happier.”

Wellsboro head coach Sharon Zuchowski is also proud of Marple’s choice.

“I am very happy for Mackenzie. I knew she wanted to keep competing in volleyball and this just validates the hard work she has put in to reach that goal.
