Itâ€s been quite some time since both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens had strong teams at the same time. The Leafs have been the better squad in the regular season over the last few years, but Montreal got the best of them with an epic comeback series win when the two met in the 2021 playoffs.
Montreal has grown by leaps and bounds since then, though. The Canadiens have been one of the most exciting teams to watch this season and have already won a couple of thrilling games. But do they have enough to surpass their archrivals this season? Letâ€s dive into that and other potential overreactions from this week.
Canadiens poised to finish with more points than Leafs
An early glance at the Atlantic standings reveals Montreal in an unfamiliar spot, tied atop the division with the Maple Leafs one point behind. Thereâ€s a lot of hockey to be played and Toronto has beaten the Canadiens this year, but there is reason to believe the gap between the two teams has narrowed considerably. Montreal looks like one of the fastest teams in the league, playing an up-tempo style that the opposition is having a tough time dealing with. Cole Caufield looks to be developing into a great goal scorer and Nick Suzuki is tremendous at both ends of the ice. The Canadiens had to scratch and claw to get into the postseason a year ago, though this group looks ready to take a forward and potentially overtake a team like the Maple Leafs.

Overreaction? – No
First off, the Leafs have lost a superstar and 100-point player in Mitch Marner, making them less potent offensively and putting the forward depth between the two teams more on par. Toronto has added the likes of Nic Roy, Matias Maccelli and Dakota Joshua, who havenâ€t really clicked yet in any meaningful offensive way. Itâ€s fair to question how Toronto will replace Marnerâ€s offence.
Then thereâ€s the blue line, where the Leafs have a solid group but itâ€s much older than Montrealâ€s, and the Canadiens have better puck movers. Lane Hutson, Noah Dobson and Mike Matheson will all be able to drive offence from the back end to help the forward group generate more scoring.
When it comes to the goaltending, this is the area Iâ€d be most concerned about if I were the Maple Leafs. Joseph Woll has been away from the team and thereâ€s no word on when he might return, leaving the bulk of the work to Anthony Stolarz, who has never played more than 34 games in a season. Expecting Stolarz to replicate the incredible numbers he posted last season is a big ask under the circumstances. Toronto is playing 13 non-playoff teams from 2024-25 in its first 15 games this year, with 10 of those games coming at home, and so far, they are off to a mediocre start. If the Maple Leafs donâ€t pick it up soon, it could be an opportunity for Montreal to take advantage of.
I donâ€t think the Canadiens are going to completely leave the Leafs in their dust or anything like that, but the two teams feel closer than they have in a while. Toronto had 108 points last year and Montreal had 91, so could I see a scenario where Montreal ups its total by nine or 10 points? Sure. And would it shock me if the Leafs regress by eight points or so? Absolutely not. Either way, I still think both teams make the playoffs and maybe weâ€ll even be treated to another first-round matchup between the two.
Matvei Michkov is headed for a sophomore slump
Itâ€s been a very quiet start for Matvei Michkov. After dazzling with 26 goals and 63 points as a rookie, Michkov has just a single point this season and heâ€s only managed a total of seven shots on goal in five games. Whatâ€s more troubling? It seems Rick Tocchet isnâ€t leaning on Michkov too heavily just yet. The Philadelphia Flyers forward has played less than 15 minutes in four of his five games so far this year after averaging almost 17 minutes a night a year ago. He also played a season low 12:07 on Saturday night. If Michkov is getting less playing time under Tocchet than John Tortorella, you can understand why Flyers fans may be concerned about a sophomore slump.
Overreaction? – Yes
I wouldnâ€t be overly concerned about Michkov just yet. Letâ€s not discount the adjustment it takes to acclimate yourself to a new head coach and playing style, especially for a young player like Michkov. Heâ€s still on the top line and Iâ€d expect his minutes to increase as the season goes on and he earns more of Tocchetâ€s trust. If he managed 63 points under Tortorella, thereâ€s surely a path to eventually bettering that under a coach that wonâ€t have the offensive shackles on so tightly.
That isnâ€t to say Tocchet will have the Flyers playing pond hockey out there; far from it. But his Vancouver Canucks finished sixth overall in goals just two years ago, so I think Tocchet will allow Philly to be a little more creative offensively than Tortorella did. Thatâ€s not to say Michkov will finish near the top of the league in scoring or anything, but I donâ€t see his numbers plummeting drastically in year two either.
Jack Eichel making early MVP case
Donâ€t look now, but Jack Eichel is leading the league in scoring. Eichel has at least two points in every game but one and already has five goals. Heâ€s not going to score 80 times but it seems very realistic that Eichel could easily surpass his career high of 36 playing with Marner on a regular basis. Thereâ€s a long way to go in the season but if you were handing out the Hart Trophy today, it would probably go to Eichel.
Overreaction? – No
I donâ€t see any signs of Eichel slowing down. He had 94 points in 77 games a year ago, and as long as heâ€s healthy, Eichel seems destined to cross the century mark with ease in 2025-26. There are also a couple of things working in Eichelâ€s favour right now, like a healthy Mark Stone who has 11 assists and obviously Marner, who also has tremendous vision and an incredible skillset. Eichel has never skated with a playmaker as talented as Marner, so a career high in points could very well be in order. Marner is also very good defensively, meaning he can help take some of the pressure off Eichel in that department so he can focus a little more on offence.
There will obviously be others that are going to be in the Hart conversation, like Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon and Kirill Kaprizov, to name a few, but it very much feels like Eichel is going to be in the mix all season long with the way things are going.
Matt Boldy will hit 50 goals
He hasnâ€t even scored 30 goals since the 2022-23 season, but this year feels different for Matt Boldy. The Minnesota Wild forward is off to the races with a goal in the first four games he played to go along with five assists. Boldy has the luxury of playing on a stacked top line with Kirill Kaprizov and Marco Rossi and thatâ€s helping him find the scoresheet with regularity. The 24-year-old is starting to establish himself as an elite talent and it does seem like he has the ability to score 50 goals if all the stars align.
Overreaction? – No
Boldy managed just 27 goals last season, but that was with Kaprizov missing half the 2024-25 campaign. If Kaprizov can stay healthy this year and the duo are paired up as wingers for the majority of the season, thereâ€s no reason to believe Boldy canâ€t add another 20 goals or so to his total. Plus, Rossi is proving to be a real offensive threat as well, coming off a 60-point campaign himself. That trio could become one of the most formidable lines in all of hockey. Even if the Wild flip-flop Rossi and Joel Eriksson Ek at times as the top line centre, it still gives Boldy a solid pivot to play with.
There also seems to be an increased emphasis on Boldy shooting the puck more, as last season he set a career high in that department with 271 shots. This year, he is on pace to beat that mark, and thereâ€s a good chance that playing next to Kaprizov will give him more quality looks. Kaprizov is going to attract the majority of the attention in the offensive zone, which should free up more time and space for Boldy. It would not shock me, as long as everyone stays healthy, if Boldy doubles his goal total from a year ago.
Cam Talbot has overtaken John Gibson as the Red Wings’ number one goalie
John Gibson finally gets a change of scenery and lands in Detroit, only to watch Cam Talbot start three of the first four games of the season. Talbot has been excellent thus far, going 3-0-0 with a .932 save percentage, as the Red Wings are making some early noise in the Atlantic. His starts have also come against tough competition, as Talbot has beaten the Maple Leafs twice as well as the Florida Panthers. Meanwhile, Gibson had a rough first game, allowing five goals on 13 shots. He bounced back Friday with a quality start against the Tampa Bay Lightning but the Wings are desperate for results and Talbot could easily get the majority of the starts going forward if he keeps this up.
Overreaction? – Yes
Keep in mind, Talbot is 38 years old and heâ€s had hot starts in recent years but struggled to sustain them. Last season was a great example, as Talbot started with a .913 in October and a .919 in November, only to fade in December with a mark of .869. Then, from February onward, Talbot had a save percentage well below .900. At his age, heâ€ll have a tough time sustaining this level of play if heâ€s asked to take on a heavy workload. Talbotâ€s numbers are going to come back down to earth at some point.
Plus, Detroit gave up a pair of draft picks and Petr Mrazek to get Gibson, so they have a lot invested to make it work. Theyâ€re going to give him every chance to succeed because he has a higher ceiling than Talbot. If Gibsonâ€s injury woes continue, thatâ€s another matter altogether, but Iâ€d expect Gibson to end up with more playing time than Talbot as long as heâ€s healthy. The Red Wings have been looking for stability in goal for years, and Gibson ultimately gives them the best chance to make that happen if he can find consistency with his game.

The Hurricanes will finally get over the hump this season
Only one undefeated team remains, and itâ€s the Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes have looked great over the first two weeks, outscoring their opponents 23-11 in five victories with goals from 13 different players. Seth Jarvis has looked to have found another gear, already finding the back of the net six times, which included an overtime winner Saturday night. Carolina also has the benefit of playing in the Metropolitan Division, which is arguably the weakest in the league. It already looks like the Hurricanes are well set up for another deep playoff run.
Overreaction? – Yes
Letâ€s not get too ahead of ourselves here. Carolina has only beaten New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Jose, Anaheim and Los Angeles, not exactly a gauntlet of teams to run through there. Plus, there are already questions in goal again, as Pyotr Kochetkov is injured and you can only rely on Frederik Andersen for so long. Andersen played three of the first four games and that pace isn’t a recipe for success for keeping him healthy. What matters most for the Canes in the post-season, as they’ve had a hard time getting past the Florida Panthers (who haven’t?) in the Conference Finals. They can’t prove they’re more prepared to battle Florida after a handful of wins over mediocre teams in October. The jury is still out on whether things will be different for Carolina this spring.

Fleetwood, the reigning FedEx Cup Championship, is the 25-year-old’s closest pursuer at 15 under par, moving into solo second with a miraculous birdie from a jungle ricochet on his final hole Saturday.

Earning a PGA Tour card is a tremendously difficult task. But keeping it is no cake walk, either. Harder still? Winning back your card after losing it. Three PGA Tour veterans proved that the hard way on Sunday at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship, where they just missed out on reclaiming their Tour privileges.
After changes to qualification rules in recent years, only the top 20 finishers at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship earned PGA Tour cards for the 2026 season. You can read all about the fortunate few who punched their Tour tickets on Sunday here.
But in this space we’re concerned with the other side of the equation, the players who have lived the life of a PGA Tour pro, fought all year on the Korn Ferry Tour to get back and came up painfully short on Sunday.
The silver lining for these three pros? They all finished high enough in the Korn Ferry standings to earn full status there in 2026, where they’ll mount new campaigns to reclaim their cards.
PGA Tour pros who missed cards at KFT Championship
Justin Suh
Justin Suh, a 28-year-old former PGA Tour pro from San Jose, has played in 90 PGA Tour events in his pro golf career, earning two top-5 and five top-10 finishes.
These 20 Korn Ferry Tour players just earned their 2026 PGA Tour cards
By:
Josh Schrock
Suh played full season of 29 Tour events in 2024. But he only made 12 cuts and failed to record any top 10s. As a result, he finished 162nd in the FedEx Cup standings to lose his playing privileges and drop back to the Korn Ferry Tour.
On the Korn Ferry Tour this season, he won the Argentina Open in March and collected two other top 10s. But it wasn’t enough to move back to the big leagues.
Entering the Korn Ferry Tour Championship at 24th in the standings, just outside the top 20 who earns cards, Suh finished T31 to remain tantalizingly close but, ultimately, short of getting his card back.
Russell Knox
A 40-year-old Scottish pro, Russell Knox played successfully on the PGA Tour for several years, earning two victories at the 2015 WGC-HSBC Championship and the 2016 Travelers Championship.
But his last full season was 2022-23, when he made 23 of 37 cuts to finish 144th in the Fedex Cup standings and lose his Tour card.
He played in 10 Tour events in 2024 and then received three sponsor invites in 2025, missing two cuts and finishing 68th at the Corales Puntacana Championship.
Knox made 21 Korn Ferry Tour starts in 2025, earning a runner-up early in the season at the Bahamas Great Abaco Classic along with three other top 10s.
But a disappointing T55 finish at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship Sunday dropped Knox from 34th to 36th place in the final KFT standings, leaving him 16 spots short of reclaiming his PGA Tour card.
Dylan Wu
Twenty-nine-year-old Oregon native Dylan Wu should be familiar to many golf fans. He played 33 PGA Tour events in 2022-23, finishing 86th in the standings to maintain his card.
But in 28 starts in 2024, Wu only managed one top 10 and dropped to 119th in the FedEx Cup standings, losing his Tour card in the process. Though he got into 13 Tour events this past season and recorded some good finishes, he only got enough points to finish 170th in the standings.
He only played eight events on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2025, so a T31-finish on Sunday could only improve his position from 71st to 69th, well short of the Tour card cutoff.
At some point during the Lakers†preseason, Luka Doncic will play in a game.
The question is when.
Even after being a full participant in practice Saturday, Lakers coach JJ Redick said that Doncic was “TBD†(to be determined) when asked if his star guard would play in Sundayâ€s exhibition game against the Golden State Warriors at Crypto.com Arena.
Redick said Austin Reaves will play and that Marcus Smart will see action in his first preseason game of the season.
The Lakers will play six preseason games, three of them coming after the game against the Warriors.
After practice, Doncic was asked when he would play.
“I donâ€t know yet,†he said. “We got to talk about it — JJ and my team. So, I donâ€t know yet. But Iâ€m probably going to end up playing two games of the preseason.â€
When the regular season starts Oct. 21 at home against the Warriors, Doncic will not have running mate LeBron James beside him.
James was diagnosed with sciatica nerve issue on his right side, the Lakers announced to the media Thursday, saying that heâ€ll be re-evaluated in approximately three to four weeks.
James and Doncic formed a great partnership when they played together after the shocking blockbuster trade last February.
Not having James to start the season has to be unsettling for Doncic and the Lakers.
“Itâ€s a big change,†Doncic said. “Heâ€s a great player. He can help us a lot. But at the end of the day, our mentality needs to be next man up. We got a group of guys that have been practicing and hopefully LeBron can join us as soon as possible. We are going to obviously need him. But our mentality has got to be next man up. Thatâ€s it.â€
Advertisement
Doncic will get plenty of help from Reaves, Smart, Deandre Ayton, Jared Vanderbilt and others with James out.
Still, the assumption is that Doncic will have to carry a heavy load with James sidelined.
“No. I donâ€t view it that way,†Doncic said. “I just want to play basketball. If I do less, if I do more, whatever it takes for me to get a win.â€
James hasnâ€t practiced at all, but Doncic said that hasnâ€t stopped the two of them from figuring out the team can still function at a high level.
“Itâ€s not everything about on the court. Thatâ€s what Iâ€ve been saying,†Doncic said. “Itâ€s about chemistry off the court, too. So, obviously, now itâ€s a little more off the court, but while we watched practices this week, we talked a lot about it.â€
Advertisement
Lakers keep moving ahead without James
They had known over the summer that James had been dealing with “the nerve irritation,†Redick said, and so it wasnâ€t a total surprise James is going to be out with a sciatica issue.
Redick said James has been on the court “every day†doing individual work. He just hasnâ€t been able to practice with his teammates.
Redick was asked how James’ inability to participate in practice affected his game planning for practice and going into the season knowing that he wonâ€t be available for a while.
” No, no effect on practice planning,†Redick said. “And we haven’t game-planned yet, so, no effect.â€
Advertisement
Redick had not put too much emphasis on his starting lineup during training camp and during the preseason games.
But with James turning 41 in December, entering his 23rd season and being injured in training camp, Redick was asked if he could foresee having a lineup with James starting and another with him out.
“Potentially. Yeah,†he said. “Something that certainly has crossed my mind in the last couple days. Yeah…You hope that he’s back soon. That’s, those things are, those things can be tricky. So it, I don’t think it’s …
“We knew this going into camp, so it wasn’t like it’s changed anything for how we want to practice or what our philosophies are with the preseason games. It is unclear who’s gonna be, what the starting lineup is gonna be. That’s the reality until he is back. We’ll have to figure that out.â€

Per the NHL, Werenski is looking to become just the seventh U.S.-born defenseman in NHL history with three career 20-goal seasons.
He’d join Phil Housley (7x), Reed Larson (6x), Brian Leetch (5x), Gary Suter (3x), Al Iafrate (3x), and Mark Howe (3x) as the only ones to do so to date.

Zach Werenski is an absolute superstar, but people in Columbus already knew that. Most experts around the league knew this as well and knew it was only a matter of time before he popped off.
Kris Russell – 2009-2012 – Drafted by Columbus in 2005.
Russell played 288 games in Columbus and had 79 points. He was traded to the St. Louis Blues on November 11, 2011, in exchange for Nikita Nikitin.
He went on to play 912 NHL games and total 254 points. After playing 6 seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, Russell retired in 2022

“I think that we’ve got a pretty undercover breakout guy this year, Jet Greaves, Columbus. And now he’s the best performing goalie over the last three years in adjusted save percentage.â€

JACKSON, Miss. — Garrick Higgo shot a 5-under 67 on Saturday to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Sanderson Farms Championship, with no plans to play it safe Sunday at the Country Club of Jackson.
“I’m going to play as if I’m behind tomorrow and be as aggressive as I can be and make as many birdies as I can,” Higgo said.
The South African player has fought through a labrum injury after winning an opposite-field event in the Dominican Republic the week after the Masters. He debated having surgery on his hip after the regular season, but realized he could handle it with a change in his fitness routine. He is lifting less and being smarter.
Steven Fisk and Danny Walker were tied for second. Fisk had his second straight 65, and Walker shot 67.
“Just more play like I’ve done the last three days,” Walker said. “It’s hard to say with what Garrick does. He could run away. Nothing I can do about that. If I just keep playing like I am and maybe have one or two less mistakes, I think that would take care of it.”
Unlike most players in the Fall Series event, Higgo’s FedEx Cup rank is of little consequence. Having won the Puntacana Championship, he has his PGA Tour card locked up and is in The Players Championship. The Fall Series events no longer get a Masters invitation.
Only the top 100 keep full PGA Tour cards after the Fall Series end in November. Five tournaments are left on the schedule.
Walker is 104th in the FedEx Cup, while Fisk is 135th.
“Just really in control of the driver and hit a bunch of fairways,” Fisk said” Just tried to kind of pick my spots and where I can be aggressive and where I just kind of need to play for par.”
Taylor Montgomery was 15 under, following a second-round 63 with a 69. He’s 147th in the standings.
Matt Kuchar (65) was 13 under with Frankie Capan III (68) and Vince Whaley (68). Whaley is 102nd in the standings, Kuchar 115th and Capan 157th.
Higgo birdied the par-5 14th and par-4 15th to get to 18 under, then parred the final two.
“I’d say it was quite a good fight,” Higgo said. “I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. I mean, it’s never easy. Golf never really goes your way. I just stayed patient and tried to put good swings on it and tried to roll the ball as good as I can.”
Higgo played in the final group with Scottie Scheffler at the Procore Championship last month, where he tied for seventh.
“I seem to be playing well,” Higgo said. “I think all of us always try and stay patient. Some weeks it’s easier than other weeks.”

MILWAUKEE — Sal Stewart homered and hit an RBI single, Miguel Andújar went 3-for-5 and the Cincinnati Reds moved a step closer to their first postseason berth since 2020 by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 7-4 on Saturday night.
The Reds will earn the National League’s third and final wild-card playoff spot if they beat the Brewers or if the New York Mets lose to the Miami Marlins on Sunday. A Reds loss and a Mets win would send New York to the playoffs instead.
That third wild-card team will head to Los Angeles to begin a best-of-three matchup with the Dodgers on Tuesday.
Cincinnati and the Mets, who beat the Marlins 5-0 on Saturday, are both 83-78. The Reds own the head-to-head tiebreaker because they went 4-2 against the Mets this season.

Jackson Chourio homered for the Brewers, who clinched the best regular-season record in the majors and home-field advantage throughout the postseason thanks to the Philadelphia Phillies’ 5-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins.
Cincinnati broke a scoreless tie with a six-run third inning that included four hits, two errors and a pair of walks.
Noelvi Marte led off by reaching on a throwing error by starter Robert Gasser (0-2). Marte advanced to third on Andújar’s double and scored on Stewart’s one-out single.
Cincinnati led 1-0 when Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski made his first major league relief appearance with the bases loaded and two outs.
Ke’Bryan Hayes greeted Misiorowski with an infield single on an 0-2 pitch. Misiorowski then walked Matt McLain. TJ Friedl singled home two runs, and McLain scored on the play as well due to left fielder Isaac Collins’ throwing error.
Cincinnati starter Andrew Abbott (10-7) allowed three runs over 5⅓ innings. Emilio Pagán, pitching for a fourth straight day, retired the side in order in the ninth for his 32nd save in 38 opportunities.
Pagán was just the second big league player to pitch on four consecutive days this season. Tyler Ferguson of the Athletics did it from May 3 to 6.
Leading by seven points entering Sunday singles, Europe needs just two-and-a-half more points to retain the Ryder Cup.
And by the start of the first singles match at 12:02 p.m. ET, the visitors might only require two.
That’s because Viktor Hovland, who was a late scratch from Saturday afternoon fourballs because of a neck injury, might not play. European captain Luke Donald confirmed Saturday night that Hovland was on his way to get an MRI.
“We’ll see in the morning what he’s like,†Donald said. “It’s definitely stiffened up a little bit. He would love to play, and he’ll do everything he can to play.â€
If Hovland can’t go, U.S. captain Keegan Bradley will be forced to open his envelope.
The Envelope Rule, created in 1979, requires each captain, prior to singles, to put one of his players’ names in an envelope, only to be unsealed if a player on the opposing team withdraws because of injury or illness. The player revealed in the envelope would then sit out the final session along with the injured player on the other team, and both sides would receive a half-point, so long as the withdrawal happened up to 30 minutes before the start of the first singles match.
Hovland is set to play in the anchor match on Sunday, meaning that if he doesn’t play, whomever is chosen by Bradley to sit would be removed from the tee sheet and every American underneath that player would slide up a match.
In the past, only two envelopes have been opened. In 1991, Europe’s David Gilford sat out after American Steve Pate withdrew following a car accident earlier in the week. And then two years later, American Lanny Wadkins volunteered to not play following the withdrawal of Sam Torrance because of a foot injury.
Bradley said Saturday night that he hadn’t made his decision yet as to whom he was selecting.
‘We need to go out there and play this tournament the way it was supposed to be played,†Bradley said. “I have to go figure this out now. I’m still learning what’s going on. I don’t know how that’s going to end up.â€
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The world No. 2 is undefeated and has happily embraced the role of antagonist this week at Bethpage Black. The world No. 1 is winless once again and searching for answers at the Ryder Cup.
That, in turn, sums up the plight for both teams with Rory McIlroy (3-0-1) leading the Europeans to a commanding, and historically insurmountable, 11 ½-to-4 ½ lead while Scottie Scheffler (0-4-0) has struggled with his ball-striking, his putting and has been completely shutout.
Scheffler had four birdies paired with Bryson DeChambeau in Saturday’s afternoon fourball match, but they were outclassed by Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood, 3 and 2, and Scheffler is now winless in his last eight Ryder Cup matches dating to 2023 in Rome.
“Bryson and I did some good stuff out there. We were into a tough matchup today. Those guys played great. They made a ton of putts and really tip of a cap to them. They played better than we did,†Scheffler said. “Bryson did a great job battling all day. Did a really good job keeping us in the match, but overall just didn’t do enough, and they played great.â€
Scheffler and Russell Henley dropped Friday’s opening foursomes match, 5 and 3, to Ludvig Åberg and Matt Fitzpatrick, and he then lost his afternoon fourball match with J.J. Spaun, 3 and 2, to Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka. It was a similar story Saturday morning in foursomes play with a 1-up loss paired with Henley against Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland.
Scheffler became the fourth American to lose four matches in a single Ryder Cup on home soil along with Steve Stricker (2012), Raymond Floyd (’83) and Fuzzy Zoeller (’79). No U.S. player has ever lost five matches in a single Ryder Cup.
This week’s matches have offered divergent paths for the world Nos. 1 and 2 but the luck of the draw has them on a strangely fitting collision course with Scheffler and McIlroy set to face each other in Sunday’s fourth singles match, which is scheduled to begin at 12:35 p.m. ET.
