VANCOUVER — Kiefer Sherwood deflected in a Brock Boeser pass at 1:42 of overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night.
It was Boeserâ€s second assist of the night to go with an earlier goal. Elias Pettersson also scored for the Canucks (5-5-0), who snapped a three-game losing streak. Conor Garland also added two assists.
Edmontonâ€s Leon Draisaitl forced the overtime when he scored his second goal of the night on a power play with 5:03 left in the third period.
Jack Roslovic, with his first goal of the season, also scored for the Oilers 4-4-2.
Vancouver goaltender Thatcher Demko stopped 26 shots. Edmonton goalie Calvin Pickard made 23 saves.
Both teams were coming off Saturday losses. The Canucks dropped a 4-3 decision to the Montreal Canadiens at Rogers Arena in a game they led 2-0 midway through the second period. The Oilers fell 3-2 to the Kraken in Seattle.
Vancouver played the game without captain Quinn Hughes. Head coach Adam Foote said the all-star defencemen is “day-to-day†with a lower-body injury suffered in the loss to Montreal. His place was taken by Victor Mancini.
Canucks: Boeser has seven points (three goals, four assists) in his last four games against the Oilers.
Oilers: Draisaitl played in his 800th career NHL game. With his two goals he has recorded at least one point in 26 of his last 27 regular-season contests against Vancouver. He also has points in 16 regular-season games in Vancouver.
With the Canucks clinging to a one-goal lead late in the third period, defenceman Marcus Pettersson was called for slashing. It took just 27 seconds for Connor McDavid to send a pass into the slot that Draisaitl one-timed past Demko tying the game with 5:03 left.
The Canucks penalty kill has allowed 10 goals on 27 chances in the last eight games.
Oilers: Host the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday.
Canucks: Host the New York Rangers on Tuesday.

TORONTO — Eight outs from their first World Series, the Seattle Mariners let it slip away.
Their 49th season might have been the most heartbreaking.
Eduard Bazardo gave up George Springer’s three-run homer in the seventh inning, and the Mariners lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 on Monday night in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series.
“I hate to use the word failure, but it’s a failure,” Seattle star Cal Raleigh said. “What we expected was to get to the World Series and win a World Series. That’s what the bar is and the standard is, and that’s what we want to hold ourselves accountable to.”

After winning their first AL West title since 2001, the Mariners had high hopes in October. But those World Series aspirations remained unfulfilled.
“Obviously, it hurts,” center fielder Julio RodrÃguez said. “That’s also part of the game, too.”
Seattle arrived in Toronto with a 3-2 series lead, needing just one win to bring the World Series to the Pacific Northwest for the first time. The only big league team never to play in the Series never got that victory.
The Mariners never led during a 6-2 loss in Game 6 but they went ahead in the first inning of Game 7 when RodrÃguez doubled leading off and scored on Josh Naylor’s single.
RodrÃguez’s fourth postseason homer put Seattle ahead 2-1 in the third, and Raleigh added his 65th home run of the year in the fifth, his fifth of the postseason, boosting the advantage to 3-1.
Bryan Woo, who returned Friday from a pectoral strain that had sidelined him for nearly a month, replaced starter George Kirby to begin the fifth.
Woo walked Addison Barger on five pitches leading off the seventh, Isiah Kiner-Falefa grounded a single up the middle, and No. 9 batter Andrés Giménez sacrificed.
Mariners manager Dan Wilson brought in Bazardo, who started Springer with an inside sinker, then left another sinker over the plate, knee high.
Springer hit his 23rd career postseason homer.
Wilson said he had no regrets about going with Bazardo over closer Andres Muñoz.
“You make your decisions, and sometimes you have to live and die with it,” Wilson said. “The way Bazardo has thrown the ball all season long, we were comfortable with where we were. It just didn’t go our way.”
Seattle didn’t get a hit in the final four innings, and the season ended when Leo Rivas, Dominic Canzone and RodrÃguez struck out against Jeff Hoffman in the ninth.
“I know this stings and there’s no question that it’s going to sting,” Wilson said. “It’s a special team in there. It’s a shame that we had to come out on the wrong side of this one.”
A former catcher, Wilson played for Seattle from 1994 to 2005, reaching the ALCS three times. The Mariners had never gotten past Game 6 — until this season.
“All of us now have had a taste of how close we can get and how good this team can be,” Wilson said. “Once you get that, that’s what you’re shooting for again the next year, and I know that will continue to be the goal.”
Players of India (in blue) and Singapore vie for the ball during their 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifier football match, in Goa. (PTI Photo) India’s men’s senior national football team has dropped to 136th place in the latest FIFA World Rankings, marking their lowest position since November 2016.The team’s new ranking coincides with their elimination from both the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifications.India’s football journey has seen significant changes in recent times. After achieving success in the 2023 Intercontinental Cup, SAFF Championship, and Tri-Nation Series, the team’s performance has declined considerably.Their promising period, which had helped them reach the top 100 rankings, was followed by a disappointing AFC Asian Cup campaign in Qatar. The team failed to score any goals and suffered three consecutive defeats in the group stage. The national team’s leadership has undergone multiple changes, with three different head coaches in less than two years. Igor Å timac was replaced by Manolo Márquez, who was later succeeded by Khalid Jamil.Under Jamil’s leadership, the team showed some tactical improvements during the CAFA Nations Cup friendly tournament. However, their competitive match results have remained unsatisfactory. The team’s most recent competitive victory was against Kuwait in November 2023, with a score of 1-0.In the global rankings, Spain maintains its position at the top, followed by Argentina and France in second and third places respectively. The top eight positions are completed by England, Portugal, the Netherlands, Brazil, and Belgium.Germany has moved up two positions to 10th place after winning their qualifying matches against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland. Croatia has moved down to 11th position following their draw with the Czech Republic. The rankings will play a crucial role in determining the seedings for the expanded 48-team 2026 World Cup draw scheduled for December 5. The United States, Canada, and Mexico, as co-hosts, will be placed in the top-seed pot along with the nine highest-ranked direct qualifiers, likely including Germany.
Arne Slot insisted that Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak would develop an understanding in attack, speaking after Liverpoolâ€s stoppage-time defeat by Chelsea meant they relinquished top spot to Arsenal.
Salah and Isak were disappointing as the champions fell to their third successive defeat in all competitions but Slot is confident that his big-name forwards will improve once they get to know each other.
“The more they play together the more they will connect,†the Liverpool manager said. “You have to work really hard to reach a certain level and then itâ€s very hard in football because you also play against very good teams to keep that level going. What I mean by that is consistency. But itâ€s clear that we had our changes in the summer. Players came in different moments.
“Last week thereâ€s hardly been any training time. Still we need to try to bring these players in. If the result would have been better today with a draw or a win then we would have had a great start to the season if you take into account everything that happened in the summer in Liverpool.â€
Slot, who had to rejig his defence after Ibrahima Konaté went off with a thigh injury in the second half, defended Salahâ€s wayward finishing. “What I like is that we brought him many times in the position he would like to be in,†the Dutchman said. “And I would like him to be in because heâ€s shown in his career and since Iâ€m here that in those positions he can score goals.
“He had many opportunities to do what heâ€s done so often. Heâ€s a human being and itâ€s not like every chance he gets is always a goal. We feel sometimes it is because of what heâ€s done last season.â€
Liverpool host Manchester United after the international break and Slot believes better finishing would have stopped his side from losing at Chelsea and Crystal Palace. “In both games weâ€ve created more chances than the team we have faced but the truth is that we have only scored once in both games and our opponent has scored twice,†he said.
Chelsea led through Moisés Caicedoâ€s early goal and it seemed they would have to settle for a point when Cody Gakpo equalised. But Enzo Marescaâ€s side moved up to sixth when Estêvão Willian, the Brazilian teenager, popped up in the 95th minute to score his first goal in English football.

Estêvãoâ€s intervention sparked wild scenes and led to Maresca receiving a second yellow card for his celebrations. Chelseaâ€s head coach will serve a touchline ban when his team visit Nottingham Forest.
Willy Caballero, Marescaâ€s assistant, was left to conduct post-match media duties. “Heâ€s OK,†Caballero said of Maresca. “He cannot be here because of the red card. He wanted me to praise the players because of the effort they have done today. We deserved the victory because of the chances we created.â€
Detroit prospects Emmitt Finnie and Nate Danielson delivered impressive performances in the Red Wings†3-2 preseason-opening win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.
The Red Wings’ top prospects were on display Tuesday during Detroit’s 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in their preseason opener. The win extended the Red Wings winning streak in preseason openers to seven, and improved their record to 9-4 against the Blackhawks in their last 13 exhibition matchups. Stealing the show was 20-year-old Emmitt Finnie, who netted a goal and dished a highlight reel assist for the first star of the game.
It was an exciting sight for fans in attendance as the future of the franchise was in full display as Finnie, a seventh round pick by the Red Wings in 2023, skated alongside top prospects Nate Danielson (9th overall in 2023) and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard (15th overall in 2024). The trio made an impact in their second-line roles, logging around 15 minutes each, with Brandsegg-Nygard seeing closer to 17 minutes with additional time on the power play.
Finnie proved to be a ‘tenacious’ player according to Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan and it showed when he forced a turnover in the Blackhawks end. He kept the offensive zone possession alive and worked the puck back to the point before a shot from the point by Ian Mitchell and a rebound off a shot from Brandsegg-Nygard, gave Finnie an open net for the go-ahead goal.
Danielson made his presence felt at both ends of the ice, connecting well with Finnie on several offensive sequences. One standout moment came when Finnie created space with a slick series of dekes and set up Danielson for a quick one-timer, but the shot hit the outside of the net. Danielson would eventually find the scoresheet, crashing the net as the puck worked its way back to Wallinder at the point. Wallinderâ€s shot was perfectly redirected by Danielson, beating the Blackhawks goaltender for his first goal of the preseason.

Brandsegg-Nygard was all over the ice, contributing a pair of assists, three shots on net, four hits as well as a tripping penalty that led to a Connor Bedard goal. His play earned himself the second star of the game as he made some influential plays throughout that led to scoring chances like early in the first period on a two-on-one fast break or when setting up a handful of opportunities on the power play.
Another standout came from Carter Mazur, the Red Wings†2021 third-round pick, who delivered a stellar performance. The 23-year-old Michigan native made headlines in the hockey world last season when being injured early into his NHL debut and suffering a season-ending injury. Mazur returned from an off-season of rehab and played well in his first action with a goal off a through-the-legs pass from Finnie for an easy goal on a one-timer.
Mazur could’ve scored more than once as his physical, gritty style of play earned him several scoring chances including a breakaway in the second period that was turned away. His physicality at one point drew a cross-checking penalty from Chicago’s Ethan Del Mastro.
Building on that momentum, the Red Wings’ newest first-round pick, Carter Bear, made an impressive debut. Thrust into a significant role right away, he logged nearly 21 minutes of ice time and registered three shots on goal, showcasing poise and confidence beyond his years. The 18-year-old winger was the last player off the ice in warmups and showed offensive talents that garnered his first round selection. McLellan admired Bear’s first game with the Red Wings but did note that his young frame was noticeable and that he will need to age a bit more before getting regular NHL minutes.

“We Have To Make The Playoffs”: Andrew Copp Has Blunt Expectation For Red Wings in 2025-26
The Detroit Red Wings enjoyed one of the longest postseason streaks in professional sports, qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs every season from 1991 through 2016.
Bear’s offensive skillset is evident but adding weight is something he likely needs to work on. His most notable plays of the game were his scoring chances while playing on a line with NHLers in J.T. Compher and Jonatan Berggren on the first line.
The Red Wings will resume their preseason on Thursday when they host the Buffalo Sabres, before hitting the road for matchups against the Penguins in Pittsburgh and the Sabres again but in Buffalo.
