Put aside, for a moment, anxiety around the A-Leagues†next broadcast deal. Shelve calculations for the impending “hard†salary cap. Forget the perpetual challenges of venues, crowds, members. Of connecting the pyramid. Of all the worries in Australian footballâ€s future.

The A-League Men kicks off on Friday for its 21st season, and for the best 300 or so footballers in the country, nothing matters more than when the referee blows for kick-off. “Once the whistle goes, Iâ€m going to be doing what it takes to win the game,†says Kai Trewin, the player of the year at champions Melbourne City.

City travel to Western Sydney on Saturday to meet a Wanderers side injected during the off-season with proven A-Leagues talent including Kosta Barbarouses, Angus Thurgate and Steven Ugarkovic, who played alongside Trewin at City last year. “Theyâ€ve done some really good recruiting, and theyâ€re going to be a really strong team,†Trewin says.

The 24-year-old defender/midfielder secured his first call-up to the Socceroos last season in a breakout year that placed him firmly in contention for Tony Popovicâ€s squad for next yearâ€s World Cup. Trewinâ€s international aspirations – as well as those of his club-mate Aziz Behich and others such as Victory forward Nishan Velupillay – will form one of this seaonâ€s key storylines. “If youâ€re playing consistently here and playing really well, I donâ€t think [Popovic] will be scared to pick anyone out of A-Leagues,†Trewin says.

Winger Craig Goodwin hopes his return to Adelaide will remind Popovic of his quality. The 33-year-old had off-season foot surgery fixing a problem he had managed for the past five years and had required painkilling injections. “Itâ€s up to me to do the talking on the pitch, to provide the goals and assists for this Adelaide team to lead us to success in the early rounds, and hopefully I can be involved in the next squad,†the Reds captain said this week.

Adelaide United host the season opener on Friday night against Sydney FC. The Sky Blues have long been known as the leagueâ€s glamour club, but they lost some of their lustre last year when the five-time champions missed the finals for the first time in three years. The club have had to move home matches this season from Allianz stadium due to pitch reconstruction works, and are in a period of off-field transition following changes in head office.

Coach Ufuk Talay says the Sky Blues are “definitely†still the A-Leagueâ€s glamour club. “The board change, itâ€s been fantastic,†he says. “Itâ€s not just on the field with the players and the signings, but all the little stuff off the field that makes a massive difference as well.â€

Sydneyâ€s cross-town rivals the Wanderers have lost star Spanish import Juan Mata and the Johnny Warren medal winner Nicolas Milanovic, one of a crop of young attackers to have moved overseas including Adrian Segecic, Archie Goodwin, Noah Botic and Marco Tilio. Mata has headed south to Melbourne Victory, who reached the grand final last season after knocking out impressive debutants Auckland in the semi-finals.

The New Zealand club are expected to find it difficult to meet the APLâ€s planned hard cap of $3m next season due to the committed spending from an ownership group led by American Bill Foley. But they go into this campaign motivated to improve on their first year.

At the other end of last yearâ€s league table, wooden spooners Perth enter the season with some optimism, having signed championship-winning defender Brian Kaltak from the Central Coast Mariners as well as former Wales international Tom Lawrence. Second-from-bottom last season, Brisbane Roar pursued a different pre-season by taking the team to Solomon Islands and playing against the national team, tapping into the department of foreign affairs†Pacific sporting budget.

The Roar have enough to deal with at home, however, given the clubâ€s stadium conundrum, which chief operations officer, Zac Anderson, described as his biggest headache. Brisbane canâ€t access Suncorp stadium for much of the season due to concerts, and their frustrations were exacerbated when the draw had to be redone at the 11th hour after Western United pulled out.

The clubs, whose annual distributions were slashed to $530,000 last year, are eager to hear of the outcome of the APLâ€s negotiations with broadcasters, given the existing deal with Paramount and Channel 10 expires at the end of this season. But despite belt-tightening remaining a priority for clubs and the APL, the potential of the league remains compelling for many. The investment in Melbourne Victory by Tony Bloom, owner of English Premier League club Brighton, is set to bring about a new era for one of the A-Leagues†original clubs. At times during its 21 years, the promise of the ALM has overshadowed its present. But on Saturday night, there will be no fictional creatures running out on to the turf at AAMI Park.

Rather, there will be skilful fringe Socceroo Denis Genreau, a Victory signing brought back to Melbourne from Europe. Up against him will be Lachlan Brook, Aucklandâ€s promising winger back in the ALM after a stint in the US, and who was Western Sydneyâ€s top scorer in 2023-24. Heightened by the noise of Victoryâ€s passionate fans, there will be genuine rivalry, given what happened between the sides last season. And with World Cup aspirants having more motivation than ever, those present will know: the A-Leagues are back.

Englandâ€s stars are relishing the chance to get under the spotlight at the biggest table tennis event in London since 2018.

WTT Star Contender London brings together Olympic medallists, top-20 world stars and a battalion of English athletes at the iconic Copper Box Arena on Londonâ€s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

With hundreds of spectators cheering them to the rafters, the Box That Rocks will ignite!

It all starts with the qualifying rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday, with established and up-and-coming England stars bidding to join the leading lights in the main draw.

England will also be well represented at that stage, with the likes of Tom Jarvis and Tin-Tin Ho aiming to get in amongst the top seeds as they start their campaigns from Thursday morning.

We caught up with Tom, Tin-Tin and some of the other English stars and found out they canâ€t wait to show their skills in front of a passionate home crowd.

For Tom Jarvis, there are happy memories of the ITTF Team World Cup at the same venue in 2018, when England won bronze medals for reaching the semi-finals, where they were knocked out by all-conquering China.

And he believes home crowds, building on the successful WTT Feeder Manchester events in the past two seasons, will help the players.

Tom said: “I think the Manchester Feeders have been a massive success and weâ€ve all really, really enjoyed them. Weâ€ve had big crowds and I think for all of us it doesnâ€t get more fun that playing in front of a home crowd.

“Obviously, theyâ€ve taken it up a notch from Manchester in a bigger arena. Weâ€ve played in that before at the World Cup. Itâ€s really big for all of us and hopefully some of us can put up a good run.

“WTT is very tough, especially starting in the main draw. You canâ€t really play anyone outside the top 70 or 80 in the world, so any win you get there is going to have to be a real battle.

“I think that home crowd gives you that extra little boost of energy, it makes it mean more. Some people get maybe get nervous in it, but I find it more fun to play in that. Itâ€s what we practise for, to play in front of big crowds at big tournaments.â€

Womenâ€s No 1 Tin-Tin Ho, who also played at the Team World Cup in her home city in 2018, says having family and friends in the crowd will also make a big difference.

“Itâ€s so exciting having a big WTT in London and really exciting to go back to the Copper Box,†she said. “We played World Cup there and it was a really good experience playing so close to home and having the players from other countries visit London as well.

“Itâ€s nice just knowing the crowd have got your back and Iâ€m excited for hopefully my parents and friends to watch as well.â€

Though they may not quite be the all-conquering force they once were, there is still a sense of honor that comes with being a Manchester United player, coupled with an intense pressure to meet the high standards demanded by fans.

While certain players flourish in those conditions, many have wilted under the stresses, fallen out of favor or simply been unable to muscle into the starting XI only to find themselves occupying the sub’s bench week in, week out.

However, while some have seen their careers come to an abrupt standstill at United, there is a noted phenomenon in football circles known as the “post-United bounce,” where a number of players have successfully escaped their Old Trafford purgatory and almost immediately rediscovered their form elsewhere.

While the grass isn’t always necessarily greener, this season alone we’ve seen the likes of Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Højlund and André Onana join the ranks of players who have departed the Premier League giants at a low ebb before enjoying an instant upturn in fortunes after a fresh start.

Those three aren’t the only big names to benefit from the post-United bounce either, with an ever-lengthening list of players experiencing a similar turnaround in the relatively fallow seasons that have elapsed since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as manager.

2025-26

Marcus Rashford

Patchy form and a dip in morale saw Rashford made available for loan by his boyhood club at the start of the year, with Aston Villa first taking the plunge for the second half of last term before Barcelona weighed in by taking the England forward on a seasonlong deal in the summer.

The 27-year-old already looks like a weight has been lifted from his shoulders and the swagger is visibly returning. He has made a decent start to life in Catalonia, with three goals and four assists in his first 10 games for Barça, including an impressive two-goal salvo against Newcastle United in the Champions League which earned him a standing ovation from the home faithful.

Amorim: The pressure of playing for Man Utd was difficult for Onana

Ruben Amorim talks about the pressure of playing for Manchester United following confirmation of Andre Onana’s loan move to Trabzonspor.

André Onana

A figure of derision under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, goalkeeper Onana was responsible for a string of handling and positioning errors in big games that eventually saw him lose his first-choice designation before ultimately being allowed to leave the club.

The Cameroon international signed for Trabzonspor on loan for the 2025-26 campaign and kicked things off by being named the man of the match on debut for the Turkish club despite them falling to a 1-0 loss. He then upped the ante by registering an assist in his second outing by laying on the equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Gaziantep FK.

Rasmus Højlund

A dearth of goals last season saw Højlund left out of the United squad altogether at the start of the 2025-26 campaign until Napoli came to his rescue in September with the offer of a return to Italy.

After mustering four Premier League goals last season, the 22-year-old Denmark striker took just 14 minutes to score his first for the Partenopei and has now produced four goals in his first six games for the club, including a brace in a 2-1 Champions League victory over Sporting CP and the winner against Genoa just before the October international break.

2024-25

Scott McTominay

McTominay sealed a surprise move to Napoli in the summer of 2024 after finding his game time limited under Ten Hag the previous season.

The Scotland midfielder then proceeded to win the Serie A title and be crowned the league MVP in his debut season in Italy while becoming a cult hero among Napoli fans by virtue of his tireless work rate, intense physical play, and of course his knack of scoring important goals in clutch situations.

Why Antony felt disrespected at Manchester United

Real Betis winger Antony reflects on the end of his tough time at Manchester United.

Antony

Signed by Ten Hag from former club Ajax in an £82 million deal that made him United’s third-most expensive player of all time, Antony unfortunately misfired in England and quickly became a target for derision after routinely failing to make any impact in games while desperately running through his repertoire of superfluous skills.

After two largely unproductive seasons at Old Trafford, the Brazil winger joined Real Betis on loan for the latter half of the 2024-25 season and was immediately reborn, with nine goals in 26 games and a nomination for the LaLiga player of the month award after just a few weeks in Spain, and he has now moved to Seville on a permanent basis.

2023-24

Dean Henderson

A product of the United academy, Henderson was on the books at his boyhood club between 2015 and 2023 but managed just 13 games in all competitions. Following a succession of loans up and down the Football League, the goalkeeper signed for Crystal Palace on a permanent deal in August 2023 before going on to win the FA Cup and make his England senior debut during his second season at Selhurst Park.

David De Gea

The second goalkeeper to leave United in 2023-24, former stalwart De Gea saw his 12-year stint come to an underwhelming end when his contract was allowed to expire and he was released without much in the way of fanfare. The former Spain No. 1 then remained a free agent for the entire campaign before ending his extended sabbatical by joining Fiorentina in August 2024. With penalties saved and clean sheets kept, the 34-year-old then played an important role in helping La Viola qualify for Europe (via the Conference League) in his maiden season.

2019-20 and 2020-21

The Inter Milan Exodus

Thanks to a tricky regime change at United, a sizeable number of high-earning and/or underperforming players were cleared out to make room for fresh blood in the squad.

This considerable exodus saw a number of players join Inter Milan just in time to fuel the Nerazzurri’s charge to the 2020-21 Serie A title with a good number of said players still in situ when they won the Italian top flight again in 2023-24.

Indeed, Romelu Lukaku (2020-21), Ashley Young (2020-21), Alexis Sánchez (2020-21, 2023-24), Matteo Darmian (2021-22, 2023-24) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (2023-24) all claimed major honors with Inter after leaving Old Trafford, and also played in Champions League and Europa League finals for the club too.

After having his ability to lead the line for United repeatedly brought into question, Lukaku was voted Serie A MVP in 2020-21 and finished second behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the scoring charts. Lukaku then won his second Italian league title at Napoli last season.

Chris Smalling

Smalling also left United for Italy around that time, initially on loan to Roma for the 2019-20 season before the deal was made permanent the following summer.

The center back was an instant success at the Giallorossi and even emerged as a European champion when they won the Conference League in 2021-22 under José Mourinho’s guidance. Smalling was voted man of the match in that final against Feyenoord and was included in the UEFA team of the tournament — a feat he then repeated the following year when Roma finished runners-up in the Europa League.

2018-19

Daley Blind

A fairly reliable and versatile defensive option for United, Blind enjoyed success during his four years at Old Trafford by winning an FA Cup in 2015-16 and then the Carabao Cup and Europa League in 2016-17.

However, despite being seen as something of a fading force on his United exit, the Netherlands international kicked on by returning to boyhood club Ajax to claim three more Eredivisie titles and two KNVB Cups before spending a single season with Bayern Munich and lifting the Bundesliga shield in 2022-23. The 35-year-old veteran is still going too, and is currently in his third season with Spanish side Girona.

2016-17

Memphis Depay

It’s fair to say that Depay failed to fully ignite at United under Louis van Gaal, with an underwhelming 18-month spell at Old Trafford coming to an end in January 2017 when he signed for Lyon in a permanent deal.

Still only 22 at the time, the Dutch forward’s career soon began to gather momentum and he technically won LaLiga with Barcelona in 2022-23 (though left the club halfway through the season after making just four appearances) to join Atlético Madrid. However, Depay has been a bona fide league winner in recent months, taking the Brazilian Serie A title with Corinthians in 2025.

2015-16

Ãngel Di María

With stints at Benfica and Real Madrid already under his belt, Di María was recognized as one of the most skillful playmaking wingers in the world when he signed for United in August 2014 in a huge deal worth almost £60 million — the highest transfer fee ever paid by a British club at the time.

Unfortunately despite early promise, a failure to settle in England, untimely injuries and a dramatic oscillation in form saw Di María regularly squeezed out of the first team under Van Gaal and it all came to an end after 12 months when Paris Saint-Germain offered to rectify the situation in the summer of 2025. The nimble Argentina star duly went on to win a domestic quadruple in his debut season before adding a further 15 major honors to his collection during the seven years he spent in Paris — also winning the FIFA World Cup and two Copa Américas with Argentina.

At the grand old age of 37, Di María is still playing in Argentina with his boyhood club, Rosario Central.

2014-15

Wilfried Zaha

Something of a poster boy for the false start of the post-Alex Ferguson era at United, Crystal Palace star Zaha was actually signed by Fergie in January 2013 but had his move delayed until the following summer, by which time the legendary Scot had retired and been replaced at the helm by protégé David Moyes.

Zaha made just two appearances under Moyes, who sent the young winger out on loan to Cardiff City for the second half of the 2013-14 campaign. Without making a single league start for United, the 22-year-old then returned to Palace in 2014-15, initially on a season-long loan and soon found his ridiculously quick feet again, immediately re-establishing his “fan favourite” status at Selhurst Park while subsequently hitting the best form of his career in the Premier League, carrying the Eagles for several seasons and winning the club player of the year award in 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Major League Table Tennis brought its high-octane  format to the Pacific Northwest this weekend, with Week 3 action at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. The hometown Portland Paddlers hosted three other teams – the Los Angeles Spinners, Chicago Wind, and defending champion Carolina Gold Rush.  The weekend was packed with action, with the Golden Game deciding all but one of the matches.

Friday Afternoon – Carolina Gold Rush vs. Chicago Wind:

The early match on Friday saw a dominant 18-3 win by the Chicago Wind.  Jeongwoo Park logged the first 3, blanking Enzo Angles.  Mo Zhang kept things rolling for the Wind winning 2 of 3 against Chen Sun.  Doubles went to the Gold Rush with Enzo Angles and Kai Zhang taking 2 of 3 over Jeongwoo Park and Sean Zhang.  Then Robert Gardos won 3 straight over Eugene Want to extend the Windâ€s lead to 9-3, and Emmanuel Lebesson effectively closed the door with another 3-0 sweep over Mohamed Shouman.  They entered the Golden game up 12-3, and dominated the Golden Game for a final victory of 18-3.

Friday Evening – Portland vs. Los Angeles Spinners:

The first day closed with a primetime clash between host Portland Paddlers and the Los Angeles Spinners. LA took the early lead with Lubomir Pistej taking 2 of 3 over Hampus Nordberg.   The Paddlers†Kotomi Omoda then evened the score by winning 2 against Matilda Ekholm.  LA dominated doubles winning all three to take the 6-3 lead.  However, the Paddlers ralled to win all 6 in the final two matches with Kan Dong-Soo and Min Hyeok Kim each maximizing the score for the home team.  This gave Portland a 9-6 advantage heading to the final sprint to 21.  Portland won the Golden Game 21-12 extending their win to 15-6.

Saturday Afternoon – Carolina Gold Rush vs. Los Angeles Spinners:

In one of the tightest matches of Week 3, the Carolina Gold Rush defeated Los Angeles 12-9.  Carolina only bested their opponents in 2 of the 6 matchups.  Enzo Angles beat Kou Lei 2-1, and Eugene Wang defeated Lubomir Pistej 2-1.  Each of the other matches went to the Spinners with Matilda Ekholm taking 2 of 3 over Chen Sun, and Pistej/Sareen taking 2 of 3 in Doubles, and Alexandre Robinot winning all 3 in his match against Mohamed Shouman.  The result was a 9-6 advantage for the Spinners.  However, with the final phase counting for 6 points, this was tight enough to be decided in the Golden game.  That game went 21-14 in favor of the Gold Rush – giving them the 12-9 win.

Saturday Evening – Portland vs. Chicago Wind:

Portland was featured again in the late match on Saturday – this time against Chicago Wind. This match was a one-sided win, with the Paddlers leading 10-5 going in to the Golden Game.  The Windâ€s lone win was Jeongwoo 2-1 over Min Hyeok Kim.  All of the other matches went to Portlant with Kotomi Omoda winning 3-0, Kumar/Nordberg winning 2-1, Kang Dong-Soo winning 2-1, and Hampus Nordberg winning 2-1.  In the Golden Game, Portland won 21-12 for a cumulative points total of 16-5.

Sunday Morning – Chicago Wind vs. Los Angeles Spinners:

The early match on Sunday was between the Wind and Spinners, the two losers from the Saturday matches.  This was another tight match with the two squads nearly tied entering the Golden Game (Chicago 8 – Los Angeles 7).  The Wind won the first two matches with Jeongwoo Park taking 2 of 3 over Kou Lei and Mo Zhang sweeping all three against Matilda Ekholm.  The Spinners first win came in doubles with Pistej and Sareen winning all three over Gardos and Tran.  The final two matches were split with Windâ€s Robert Gardos taking 2 of 3 over Robinot, and then Spinners Lubomir Pistej took 2 of 3 over Lebesson.  With the Wind up 8-7, they entered the Golden Game which ended in a very close 21-19 score (with Matilda Ekholm closing the door by winning the final two points).  Spinners win 13-8.

Final Sunday Match – Portland vs. Carolina Gold Rush:

Sundayâ€s marquee matchup pitted host Portland against the reigning MLTT champion Gold Rush. Despite how well Carolina had been playing, this match was not close.  The Paddlers dominated from the start when Kang Dong-Soo won all three against Wei Wang.  Kotomi Omoda kept the momentum by winning 2 of 3 against Chen Sun.  Sid Naresh and Nikhil Kumar then extended the lead by taking 2 of 3 over Angles and Kai Zhang.  And Portland won both of the last matches as well with Min Hyeok Kim winning all three over Eugene Wang, and Hampus Nordberg taking 2 of 3 over Enzo Angles.  After this total dominance, Portland was up 12-3 and had already won.  But they did not let up in the Golden Game, winning 21-15 and extending their final score to 18-3.

See You In Illinois:

Portland Paddlers went 3–0 at home, giving them a total of 5-1 for the season – first place in the MLTT standings.  The next MLTT event is in Bensenville, Illinois.

The Knicks opened the preseason with a 99-84 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday afternoon as part of the NBA’s Abu Dhabi Games.

These exhibition matchups don’t mean much, but for the Knicks, it does present an opportunity to make a positive first impression on new head coach Mike Brown.

Two players who were able to do that: Mitchell Robinson and Miles McBride.

Robinson already looked in regular season form as he jumped into the starting five alongside Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Pacome Dadiet, and Karl-Anthony Towns.

The big man dominated the glass all day, reeling in a game-high 16 boards across his 18 minutes.

Brown called him the Defensive Player of the Game, and he also finished with seven points on 3-of-6 shooting.

“That’s what I’ve been doing the whole time I’ve been in New York,” Robinson said. “I’m just continuing doing what I was doing last year and the year before, it’s been the same mentality all along — just going hard to the glass.”

As expected, McBride didn’t get the start, but he was one of the first reserves to enter.

Playing alongside Jalen Brunson and newcomer Jordan Clarkson in a new three-guard look, the youngster came on late in the first quarter and immediately provided a spark.

He knocked down his first three shots for eight quick points.

McBride went on to lead the team with 12 points on five-of-seven shooting (2-for-4 from three) while also reeling in five rebounds, dishing a pair of assists, and picking up a game-best three steals across 21 minutes of action.

His plus-11 rating finished third on the team, only behind Ariel Hukporti and Landry Shamet.

“It’s the preseason, so we’re just trying to get one percent better every day,” McBride said. “I just wanted to come in today and make my presence felt out there — just looking to impact winning in any way that I can.”

It is just one preseason game, but it was certainly a strong start for two of New York’s key pieces.

The big winners

The viewers. Barcelona v Paris Saint-Germain was the final many wanted last season. Wednesdayâ€s group-stage meeting showed why. The fixture did not disappoint, even if, with red tape delaying the opening of the renovated Camp Nou, it was played in the less atmospheric Lluís Companys Stadium. Luis Enriqueâ€s young Parisians staged a comeback in Catalonia, thanks to their coachâ€s expert use of his squad. Senny Mayulu, 19, upstaged Lamine Yamal by scoring the equaliser – Wednesday was the first match this season Yamal had failed to either score or contribute to a goal. Instead, the resurgent Marcus Rashford set up Ferran Torresâ€s opener for Barça. PSG were shorn of Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the forward line that claimed last seasonâ€s crown. No matter: 23-year-old Bradley Barcola stepped up as the senior forward and ravaged Hansi Flickâ€s high-line, high-wire defence. The youngsters kept coming for PSG: 17-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye was replaced by another teenager, Quentin Ndjantou, to play alongside the lively Lee Kang-in. In the end, Achraf Hakimi supplied the assist for Gonçalo Ramos, another sub, to score the 90th minute winner and inflict Barcelonaâ€s first loss this season. “If youâ€re the best team, you have to show it on the pitch, and not talk,†said Ramos, who habitually scores late goals off the bench. “We are the champions of Europe.â€

Marseille. The French club were the inaugural winners of the rebadged Champions League in 1993, yet they have a troubled relationship with the competition. That triumph carries an asterisk: the club were stripped of their French title the same year for match fixing. This season, Roberto De Zerbiâ€s firebrand coaching could take them on a deep run. Having lost 2-1, and creditably, at Real Madrid and beaten PSG last week in Ligue 1, Marseille crushed another former winner in Ajax, 4-0 in a raucous Stade Velodrome. De Zerbiâ€s squad is a mix of waifs and strays, many familiar to Premier League audiences. Against Ajax, Mason Greenwood repeated his influential showing in Madrid. His goal followed Brazilian partner Igor Paixãoâ€s early double. The fourth came from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is still enjoying his football at the age of 36. De Zerbi, usually a terse taskmaster, was gushing: “I like the way my players work, the fun they have, and the relationship they create with the fans.â€

Manchester United are nowhere near this seasonâ€s competition but Napoliâ€s Rasmus Højlund is the latest player to thrive once no longer weighed down by the red shirt. Two goals from the Dane, banished to the “bomb squad†by Ruben Amorim last season, showed why United paid Atalanta £68m for him in 2023 (and why United will take a £26m hit should his loan to Napoli be made permanent). Another former Manchester resident, Kevin De Bruyne, supplied two laser-guided assists in Napoliâ€s 2-1 win over Sporting. “Kevin is a legend of this sport and when he has the ball, I know that with his quality he will always put it perfectly for me,†said Højlund.

Player of the week

Jens Petter Hauge, Bodø/Glimt. It took a late own-goal to deny Bodo/Glimt the victory over Tottenham they probably deserved. Hauge, a star of the Norwegian clubâ€s run to last seasonâ€s Europa League semi-final after returning to his home town from spells at Milan and Eintracht Frankfurt, scored twice against Spurs this week. Both goals saw him cutting in from the wing to lash home.

“I know Iâ€ve played poorly in some matches, I am aware of it. Iâ€m not hiding … People can say many things about me, but under no circumstances can they say that I refuse to play. I have given everything, and even more, for this club. Iâ€ve played through fractures, injuries, and never once have I complained or asked for a rest. I have a good relationship with the coach, which gives me the confidence to tell him which position I prefer … always, Iâ€ve made it clear that I am available to play in any position, in any away game, and in every match.†Federico Valverde, a non-playing sub in Real Madridâ€s win at Kairat, takes to social media to deny rumours of a rift with Xabi Alonso and refusing to play at right-back in the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal.

The punditâ€s chair

“Right now, he needs to come out of the team, Liverpool need to go back to what they were last season, and try to build some confidence and some stability. Right now it looks like a mess.†Jamie Carragherâ€s takedown of Liverpool summer signing Florian Wirtz on CBS, following their 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray.

Looking ahead

Among the teams on two wins from two are Qarabag, who beat FC Copenhagen 2-0 in Baku after victory over Benfica in Portugal in their opener. Qurban Qurbanov is a legend of Azerbaijani football, a goal-plundering forward turned coach of the Land of Fireâ€s serial champions, his reign stretching to 17 years. The clubâ€s first group stage appearance since 2017-18, only their second overall, could hardly be going better. Next up for Qarabag, Athletic Club, who are on zero points after their 4-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund. Can Qurbanovâ€s men go three for three?

Two players coming into form are Arsenalâ€s Martin Ødegaard, full of creativity against Olympiakos on Wednesday, and Julián Alvarez, who starred in Atlético Madridâ€s weekend derby crushing of Real Madrid. The Argentinian scored a late penalty in Tuesdayâ€s 5-1 defeat of Eintracht Frankfurt. When Atlético visit the Emirates later this month, there will be a familiar face in the directors†box. Andrea Berta, the sporting director who signed the players for Diego Simeoneâ€s Atléti dynasty, now heads Arsenalâ€s transfer business.

Real Madrid v Juventus is a history-laden meeting of two of the most haughty members of European footballâ€s elite. The 1998 and 2017 finals were both won by the Spanish club though Juve have won 10 of the 21 meetings in Uefa competition to Madridâ€s nine. Madrid won their most recent meeting, 1-0 in Miami, during the summerâ€s Club World Cup.

The Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers ended in a 40-40 tie in an overtime thriller at AT&T Stadium on Sunday, as both quarterbacks turned in standout performances.

Dallas moved to 2-1-1 on the season behind strong outings from Dak Prescott and George Pickens, while Green Bay, despite a near-overtime blunder, improved to 1-2-1 behind Jordan Love and Micah Parsons.

Prescott completed 31-of-40 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Pickens, who finished with 134 receiving yards. Jake Ferguson added a score, and Javonte Williams contributed 85 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Jordan Love went 31-of-43 for 337 yards and three touchdowns—all to Romeo Doubs. Josh Jacobs added 86 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Micah Parsons, facing his former team, finished with three tackles and one sack on Prescott.

In overtime, Love nearly spoiled his day by mismanaging the clock, leaving just one second for the Packers to attempt a game-tying field goal.

Green Bay jumped out to a 7-0 lead after scoring on its opening possession, then reached the end zone again to start the second quarter. However, the extra point was blocked and returned by Dallas for two points.

The Cowboys got on the board with under a minute left in the half, then capitalized on a Green Bay fumble to punch in another touchdown and take a 16-13 lead into halftime.

Both teams closed the third quarter with clock-draining touchdown drives, but Dallas maintained a three-point edge heading into the final quarter.

The scoring continued in the fourth as both teams found the end zone on their opening possessions. Green Bay remained within three, trailing Dallas with 4:50 left in regulation and the ball in their hands.

Green Bay connected with Doubs for his third touchdown of the game to take a 34-30 lead with 1:45 remaining, setting the stage for a high-pressure two-minute drill for Dallas at AT&T Stadium.

In classic Cowboys fashion, Pickens hauled in a touchdown pass to cap a 62-second, four-play drive, helping Dallas retake the lead by three.

Green Bay’s Brian McManus nailed a 53-yard field goal to send it into overtime, tied at 37.Â

After an impressive downfield drive, Dallas settled for a field goal to take a three-point lead. Green Bay’s McManus responded with a successful kick as time expired to seal the 40-40 tie.

The Cowboys will hit the road to face the New York Jets next Sunday and the Packers will head into a bye week before facing the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 12.

Minus their top five forwards and best defenceman, the Vancouver Canucks could not beat Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid Sunday night. The rest of the Edmonton Oilers, the Canucks handled just fine.

Draisaitl and McDavid combined for seven points and their line generated all the Oilers goals in a 4-3 pre-season win against the Canucks in Alberta. But other than the Canucks†inability to stop two of the three best players in the world, Vancouverâ€s performance was actually pretty good — especially with their lack of firepower up front.

The Canucks got third-period goals from three key prospects, Aatu Raty, Braeden Cootes and Jonathan Lekkerimaki and pressed for a tying goal until the end after falling behind 3-0 with 23 minutes to go.

They outshot the Oilers 22-10 over the final two periods. But Draisaitl and McDavid were unstoppable.

Against the run of play, the best one-two punch in the National Hockey League needed only three seconds on the power-play to generate a goal for Draisaitl that made it 3-0 at 16:57 of the second period. And after Raty and Cootes, on another ricochet, scored 43 seconds apart early in the third, McDavid dissected Canuck defenceman Filip Hronek on a two-on-one for a Draisaitl tap-in at 9:27.

With his best day since training camp opened on Sept. 18, Lekkerimaki finished lethally from Filip Chytilâ€s cross-ice pass to make it 4-3 with 3:08 remaining and the Canucks skating six against five.

But Vancouver couldnâ€t get another puck past Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner. In his second pre-season start, Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko was beaten four times on 24 shots, but also made the save-of-the-game with a diving, paddle stop on Josh Samanskiâ€s rebound attempt early in the third.

The Canucks left top forwards Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, Jake DeBrusk, Evander Kane and Conor Garland at home, along with superstar defenceman Quinn Hughes.

Garland is nursing an injury, but most of the top Canucks are expected to play Wednesdayâ€s game in Calgary.

Now 2-2 through four exhibition contests, Vancouverâ€s pre-season ends Friday at home against the Oilers.

Still operating essentially with two squads, the Canucks are expected to greatly reduce their pre-season roster on Monday. The organization feels a lack of lineup continuity a year ago, when the team had to staff five pre-season games in one week, contributed to the Canucks†uneven start. Getting most of their NHL lineup together for the final two pre-season games is a priority.

“Well, the players are making it difficult for us, which is great,†general manager Patrik Allvin said in an intermission interview with Sportsnetâ€s Dan Murphy in Edmonton. “Weâ€ve got good depth, so there is conversations every day here. We’ll shortly here trim down a little bit more, but there’s going to be some tough (decisions) for Adam (Foote) and his staff and for the hockey-ops.â€

Among the prospects trying to push up from the American Hockey League championship team, Raty and Linus Karlsson seemed to open camp with a head start due to their waiver-eligibility and the Canucks†need for centres (Raty) and net-front scoring (Karlsson). Neither has been outstanding, but neither have they seemed to play themselves off the team.

Lekkerimaki, the 21-year-old first-rounder who had 19 goals in 36 games for the AHL Canucks last season in his first year in North America, had a fairly quiet September until Sunday. He and Chytil were the most dangerous Canucks and Lekkerimaki, with his Draisaitl-like finish on a cross-ice pass, demonstrated why he is such a tantalizing offensive prospect. The Swede had three shots on target and six attempts. Only winger Kiefer Sherwood (four and seven) had more for Vancouver.

Lekkerimaki has obvious flaws. He isnâ€t yet as fast nor as strong as he needs to be for the NHL. But perfect hockey players are as rare as perfect humans, and the Canucks will live with Lekkerimakiâ€s deficiencies if he can be as dangerous in the offensive zone as he was Sunday.

As for the first 18-year-old in 35 years trying to make the Canucks out of camp, Cootes seems to just keep “earning another day†as Foote and Allvin have put it. His bank-shot goal off Edmonton defenceman Mattias Ekholm was Cootes†second goal and third point in three pre-season games.

Itâ€s also worth noting the teenager logged more ice time Sunday than Raty (16:58 to 15:51), again held his own in the faceoff circle (6-5) and was one of the forwards heavily leaned on in the final four minutes (2:32 of ice time) when the Canucks were pressing.

Cootes also showed his toughness by not missing a shift after an elbow from Ekholm in the second period and a blow to the face when knocked over by Atro Leppanen late in the third.

Itâ€s easy to see why the Seattle Thunderbird centre was the youngest captain in the Western Hockey League last season, and also wore the ‘C†for Canadaâ€s gold-medal-winning Under-18 team.

The Canucks†big three blue-line prospects, Victor Mancini, Elias Pettersson (Junior) and Tom Willander, have all shown well in camp and the pre-season. Pettersson was the only one who played in Edmonton, and looked solid again with three hits and 18:24 of ice time.

That all three defencemen are waiver-exempt is a huge advantage for the organization, and Allvin said Sunday there could be a “rotation†of them cycling between the NHL and AHL this season if no one player cements a roster spot with the Canucks.

Certainly, it does not appear that 26-year-old depth defenceman Pierre-Olivier Joseph, signed as a free agent this summer after 194 NHL games in Pittsburgh and St. Louis, has done anything to play himself out of Vancouver and allow room for more than one prospect on defence.

Garland missed a second straight pre-season game due to an undisclosed injury. The play-driving winger has been practising, but his absence is starting to feel similar to J.T. Millerâ€s mystery injury from a year ago when the former Canuck played only the final pre-season tuneup and clearly was not fully healthy when the season began.

Although Demkoâ€s save percentage Sunday wasnâ€t what heâ€d like, he couldnâ€t be faulted on any of the goals. And playing the whole game was a good sign for the starting goalie who needs reps after three separate injuries, including a torn popliteus muscle in his knee, restricted him to just 23 games last season.

The Abbotsford Canucks†No. 1 line of Karlsson alongside Max Sasson and Arshdeep Bains was reunited against the Oilers. Their chemistry and familiarity with one another were evident in the offensive zone. Unfortunately, they were exposed a couple of times by the McDavid-Draisaitl-Trent Frederic line. The Canuck prospects didnâ€t face anyone like that in the AHL.

Foote to reporters in Edmonton: “We had a couple of probably young mistakes early with the wrong line on the ice. But I love the effort. I mean, we didn’t quit. Beautiful six-on-five (and) we outscored them 3-1 in the third. So, I really like this group. They didn’t quit, and they applied a lot of what we’ve been working on.â€

Detroit prospects Emmitt Finnie and Nate Danielson delivered impressive performances in the Red Wings†3-2 preseason-opening win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

The Red Wings’ top prospects were on display Tuesday during Detroit’s 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in their preseason opener. The win extended the Red Wings winning streak in preseason openers to seven, and improved their record to 9-4 against the Blackhawks in their last 13 exhibition matchups. Stealing the show was 20-year-old Emmitt Finnie, who netted a goal and dished a highlight reel assist for the first star of the game.

It was an exciting sight for fans in attendance as the future of the franchise was in full display as Finnie, a seventh round pick by the Red Wings in 2023, skated alongside top prospects Nate Danielson (9th overall in 2023) and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard (15th overall in 2024). The trio made an impact in their second-line roles, logging around 15 minutes each, with Brandsegg-Nygard seeing closer to 17 minutes with additional time on the power play.

Finnie proved to be a ‘tenacious’ player according to Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan and it showed when he forced a turnover in the Blackhawks end. He kept the offensive zone possession alive and worked the puck back to the point before a shot from the point by Ian Mitchell and a rebound off a shot from Brandsegg-Nygard, gave Finnie an open net for the go-ahead goal.

Danielson made his presence felt at both ends of the ice, connecting well with Finnie on several offensive sequences. One standout moment came when Finnie created space with a slick series of dekes and set up Danielson for a quick one-timer, but the shot hit the outside of the net. Danielson would eventually find the scoresheet, crashing the net as the puck worked its way back to Wallinder at the point. Wallinderâ€s shot was perfectly redirected by Danielson, beating the Blackhawks goaltender for his first goal of the preseason.

Brandsegg-Nygard was all over the ice, contributing a pair of assists, three shots on net, four hits as well as a tripping penalty that led to a Connor Bedard goal. His play earned himself the second star of the game as he made some influential plays throughout that led to scoring chances like early in the first period on a two-on-one fast break or when setting up a handful of opportunities on the power play.

Another standout came from Carter Mazur, the Red Wings†2021 third-round pick, who delivered a stellar performance. The 23-year-old Michigan native made headlines in the hockey world last season when being injured early into his NHL debut and suffering a season-ending injury. Mazur returned from an off-season of rehab and played well in his first action with a goal off a through-the-legs pass from Finnie for an easy goal on a one-timer.

Mazur could’ve scored more than once as his physical, gritty style of play earned him several scoring chances including a breakaway in the second period that was turned away. His physicality at one point drew a cross-checking penalty from Chicago’s Ethan Del Mastro.

Building on that momentum, the Red Wings’ newest first-round pick, Carter Bear, made an impressive debut. Thrust into a significant role right away, he logged nearly 21 minutes of ice time and registered three shots on goal, showcasing poise and confidence beyond his years. The 18-year-old winger was the last player off the ice in warmups and showed offensive talents that garnered his first round selection. McLellan admired Bear’s first game with the Red Wings but did note that his young frame was noticeable and that he will need to age a bit more before getting regular NHL minutes.

“We Have To Make The Playoffs”: Andrew Copp Has Blunt Expectation For Red Wings in 2025-26
The Detroit Red Wings enjoyed one of the longest postseason streaks in professional sports, qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs every season from 1991 through 2016.

Bear’s offensive skillset is evident but adding weight is something he likely needs to work on. His most notable plays of the game were his scoring chances while playing on a line with NHLers in J.T. Compher and Jonatan Berggren on the first line.

The Red Wings will resume their preseason on Thursday when they host the Buffalo Sabres, before hitting the road for matchups against the Penguins in Pittsburgh and the Sabres again but in Buffalo.
