Viktor Hovland wanted to play, but he couldn’t. And his withdrawal from Sunday singles at the 2025 Ryder Cup caused a stir as the Americans made a furious rally that came up just short.
The lasting image of Hovland from Europe’s 15-13 win was him fist-pumping in a putt on the 17th hole during a Saturday foursomes win over Russell Henley and Scottie Scheffler. He was 1-1-1 at that point, but a neck issue flared up during that match, forcing Hovland to sit in the afternoon. He withdrew on Sunday after an MRI revealed a disc bulge. With Hovland unable to go on Sunday, the controversial Ryder Cup “Envelope Rule” went into effect. Due to a captain’s agreement, Hovland’s Sunday singles match against Harris English, who was in Keegan Bradley’s envelope, was halved.
After taking time to rest his neck, Hovland is back in action at the DP World Tour’s India Championship this week. Hovland felt bad about being unable to play on Ryder Cup Sunday, both for himself and for English, who had his Ryder Cup cut short.
“The whole situation was pretty upsetting, just the fact that I didn’t get to play, and I felt really bad for Harris, who also didn’t get to play a match, even though there was nothing wrong with him,” Hovland told reporters in India. “He just didn’t get to play, and he was upset about that, and I feel very bad for not being able to compete.”
He was robbed of a Ryder Cup moment he may never have again

When the final day of the Ryder Cup started at Bethpage Black, the Europeans held a 12-5 lead after Hovland’s withdrawal. They needed just 2.5 points from the remaining 11 matches to win the cup. Europe’s large lead suggested that Hovland’s WD would not be an important storyline in the final proceedings. But as the Americans put red on the board early, Hovland’s half point looked like it might prove to be the deciding tally in Europe claiming a road win. But Ludvig Åberg beat Patrick Cantlay, while Matt Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry, Tyrrell Hatton and Robert MacIntyre all put half points on the board to get Europe to 15 points.
After Europe finished off the Americans on Sunday, captain Keegan Bradley voiced his frustration with the rule that gave Europe a half point for Hovland’s injury.
“The rule has to change,” Bradley said. “I think it’s obvious to everybody in the sports world, in this room. Nothing against Viktor. But that rule needs to be changed by the next Ryder Cup.”
Hovland understands the frustration with the rule but also noted that it’s part of the fabric of what is supposed to be a friendly exhibition.
The rule has been in place since 1979, but hasn’t been used since 1993. The rule has only been enacted twice. In 1991, American Steve Pate suffered bruised ribs in a car accident a few days before the event. He sat until Saturday afternoon but reaggravated the injury. Pate couldn’t play, and David Gilford’s name was pulled from the envelope. The U.S. went on to win 14.5-13.5. In 1993, European Sam Torrance had to sit with an infected toe. Lanny Wadkins agreed to sit for Team USA, so no name was pulled from the envelope. The U.S. won 15-13.
“It’s tough. I think we’re so used to in sports that if you can’t play because you’re hurt, obviously that should be a loss of point,” Hovland said. “But I think in the spirit of the Ryder Cup and the spirit of the game and the history of it, knowing that this Ryder Cup is just a part of many, many Ryder Cups to come, I think it’s more of a gentlemen’s agreement that okay, you were hurt this time and maybe the next time there’s a guy on the U.S.’s team and we’re all kind of sympathetic about the person being hurt and not being able to play.
“I think there’s kind of a mutual understanding that if we were healthy we would all go out there and play. I don’t think people are using that to really finagle the system and try and squeak by.”
Suggesting a rule change is easier than finding one that makes sense. As Hovland noted, forcing the team with an injured player to take a loss would be an easy system to game.
“If you do change the rule and you give away a point, now there’s also the angle that okay, knowing that the other team is going to put out their best player most likely in the first few groups, they can just kind of put me out as a sacrificial lamb and take the L against their best player,” Hovland said. “So there’s other ways around it, and I don’t think there’s any ideal way to do it. I think that’s just a better way overall to do it, even though it’s just a tough situation, and at the end of the day, I think we’d all be wanting to go out there and play.”
European captain Luke Donald sees no need to alter the rule. The players want to play. If they can’t, the envelope is there — as it has been since 1979.
“The rule is the rule and it’s been in place for a long time,” Donald said after his team’s victory at Bethpage Black.

Things are going from bad to worse for Roman Reigns, as “The Original Tribal Chief” found himself at odds with his family, Jimmy and Jey Uso, following a historic loss against “Big” Bronson Reed at Crown Jewel. Moments after the victorious Reed and The Vision walked up the entrance ramp, Reigns had some choice words for his cousins, and The Bloodline walked out of Perth just a bit weaker than they were walking in.
Fresh off of a Tsunami from Reed, Reigns struggled to sit up as he addressed his cousins. He scolded them for interfering in his Street Fight, which saw Jey mistakenly Spear his cousin to ultimately give Reed the win. While Jimmy listened to Reigns, Jey sat near the ropes, glaring into the distance with unwrapped wrists and gnashing teeth. “You f***ed up” chants reverberated throughout the stadium as the three men fell out.
“The whole world thinks I can’t do sh** on my own,” Reigns said, exasperated.
Jimmy reminded Reigns that they interfered on his sake. Reigns said that he understood, but ultimately condemned the action, and the company of his cousins, as he rolled out the ring. As Reigns walked back up the entrance ramp, Jey colorfully expressed his frustrations.
“He only do him!” Jey shouted at Jimmy. “No matter what, he always gonna be him!”
Jey took his leave from the ring shortly after, leaving Jimmy alone to clean up the pieces of their fracturing family.
The fallout comes after a tenuous few weeks on “WWE Raw,” where Jey has been adopting a more aggressive in-ring persona against the likes of LA Knight and CM Punk. Reigns appeared on the most recent episode of “Raw” to admonish Jey and to warn The Usos against interfering in Saturday’s bout, but it seems that Reigns’ warnings have been ignored.

Blake Monroe believes thereâ€s a great story waiting to be told between her and Liv Morgan in WWE.
During her appearance on Busted Open Radio with Bully Ray, Monroe discussed potential opponents she would like to face in WWE. She said that when she looks at the womenâ€s roster across NXT, RAW and SmackDown, several names stand out to her.
Monroe mentioned that in NXT, she has always wanted to face Sol Ruca because their characters are complete opposites. She also expressed interest in facing Tatum Paxley, saying she finds her fascinating.
When it comes to the main roster, Monroe said she would love to face Rhea Ripley. However, she added that a matchup with Liv Morgan could also tell an incredible story.
“I see a lot of myself in Liv. I feel like she was very underrated for her in-ring and sheâ€s good, but when she found her character and she found her feet… I mean, she was having the run of a lifetime before she got hurt and Iâ€m sure sheâ€s gonna pick back up where she left off. But I see—I donâ€t know, I feel like I see similarities there and I feel like there could be a really good story.†[H/T: WrestlePurists]
Monroe recently finished her feud with Jordynne Grace at WWE NXT No Mercy and is now focused on Sol Ruca. Liv Morgan is currently out with a shoulder injury, but she is on the road to recovery. A future matchup between Monroe and Morgan would be very exciting.

SUNRISE, Fla. — NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman isn’t the biggest fan of taking a nearly three-week break in the middle of the season so players can participate in the Milan-Cortina Olympics.
That said, he obviously sees the value.
Bettman spoke at the season-opening game Tuesday between the Florida Panthers — who raised their second consecutive Stanley Cup championship banner — and the Chicago Blackhawks. He made clear again that he knows what having NHL players back on the Olympic stage can do for the game.
“I think it’s going to be great,” Bettman said between the first and second periods. “It’s important to our players. That’s why we’re doing it. Listen, there are lots of reasons that I’m never thrilled about taking a couple of week break in the season. Changes a lot of things.

“But on balance, I think it’ll be worth it, A) for the exposure, B) for the fan engagement, but C) and most importantly, this is and has always been very important to our players. And that’s why we’re doing this.”
The NHL got tons of exposure and engagement during last season’s 4 Nations Face-Off event, and the Olympics are obviously going to be bigger than that tournament.
“We came off of 4 Nations on a high,” Bettman said. “It shows you what our players can do representing hockey and what we think is the best best-on-best in international competition.”

Erica Howe paid it forward in hockey. She wants to do the same in her cancer journey.
The goaltender who has represented Canada internationally was among the foot soldiers in the movement for a viable, sustainable professional women’s hockey league.
Howe joined the Professional Women’s Hockey Players’ Association after the Canadian Women’s Hockey League folded in 2019 and took her Markham Thunder club with it.
There was a paying women’s hockey league she could have joined, the Premier Hockey League. Howe was among the players who put their faith behind the PWHPA’s vision for four years, even if a dream league arrived too late to benefit them.
“She all along was a strong foundational player in that movement and a voice that people respected a lot,” said Hockey Hall of Famer Jayna Hefford.
Howe was the backup goalie of the Toronto Sceptres in the inaugural season of the Professional Women’s Hockey League in 2023-24. She started three games for a 1-1-0 record.
Howe retired after that season to return to her job as a firefighter in Mississauga, Ont.
She was diagnosed with breast cancer later that summer. She says it was her turn to benefit from those who had come before her.
“When I was first diagnosed and I’m sitting in the office and my oncologist tells me the plan, the plan is so clear because so many people have sat before me and raised money and funds and awareness for this cause, so that when I got there, my plan was so clear and so quickly executed because they knew what the science said and how to handle it,” recalled the 33-year-old from Orleans, Ont.
Howe saw a parallel with hockey. The PWHL opens its third season this fall after expanding from six teams to eight.
“There was another league available, but we knew that if we just all jumped over there to play in that other league, we’d get same results, but if we banded together to sit out and kind of sacrifice what we did, even if some of us wouldn’t get the opportunity to play in it, like many of my friends and teammates didn’t, we knew it would be for kind of the betterment of everyone,” Howe said.
“You see the women who came before us who didn’t have sticks and skates, and they had to pay for everything, and they grinded so we could do better. It’s the least we could do to sit out and band together to make it better for the next wave of players coming through.
“Leaving it better than I found it. I’ve been saying that a lot, just the parallels between hockey and even like being a goalie and just trying to be present, and for my own journey, one step at a time, and then afterwards finding purpose and trying to pay it forward for the next person who has to go through this.”
After surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, Howe says her status is “no evidence of disease”.
The Sceptres and Montreal Victoire played a December game in her honour to raise money for cancer research. The Sceptres also provided a precious service to her during treatment.
“The mental toll of being at home and not feeling well, I knew was going to be one of my biggest barriers,” Howe said.
“I reached out to the Sceptres asking (general manager) Gina Kingsbury, ‘Do you have anything I can do because I know I’m going to need to grasp on to something normal here.’ They were like, ‘Absolutely, come into the rink. You’re part of this team.'”
Howe sharpened skates, cut sticks, handed out apparel, prepared the players’ benches for practice and helped goalie coach Brad Kirkwood with video analysis.
“My wife and I also joke about how it probably saved my life being able to go there and have tasks to do and just feel like these are my normal friends that I normally hang out with,” Howe said.
Sceptres teammate Blayre Turnbull saw Howe tackle cancer with the same strength she demonstrated as a teammate.
“She’s one of the players who had a huge role in creating this league and making sure that it was successful and that we started off on the right foot,” Turnbull said.
“She’s someone who, years from now, I hope is able to look back and think about the last five years of her hockey career and be really proud of everything she stood for and how she showed up during that time.”
Hefford, the PWHL’s executive vice-president of hockey operations, talked with Howe about how the league could help her during treatment, and offered options.
“It was important to us to have her feel the support within our community,” said Hefford. “She chose the team route, which I think was the best one for her because she had that built-in family already in that group.”
Howe, who backstopped Clarkson to an NCAA title in 2014, played for Canadian teams at the 2014 Four Nations Cup and 2016 women’s world championship.
She got the green light this month to ease back into recreational hockey. She’ll play Saturday in the Princess Margaret Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer tournament in Toronto to fundraise for cancer research.
“Princess Margaret is a leader in cancer research and I saw first-hand this year how important that is, so then just being able to kind of pay it forward, to make a better future for other cancer patients or anyone else who hears those words, ‘you have cancer,'” Howe said.
