NFL commissioner Roger Goodell entertained the idea of staging one international game in almost every week of the regular season in the future.

Goodell said Sunday during an interview on NFL Network the league is continuing to expand its global footprint, which increases the need to stage games abroad. Should the season grow to 18 games, an accompanying effect to the International Series could follow.

“We have our eyes set on being 16 games internationally every year,” he said. “We think we can do it.”

Goodell outlined his ambitions during an event Saturday in Dublin.

“I think our next step after Australia would be probably moving into Asia,” he said, per the Associated Press’ Ken Maguire. “That’s a continent we’d like to be playing in. We are serious about being a global sport. We would like to get to 16 games so everyone is playing one game a year internationally.”

Sixteen games would be a massive jump over the seven that make up the 2025 international schedule.

Goodell’s comments underscore how there’s an increased appetite from the teams themselves to play in foreign markets.

Peter O’Reilly, the executive vice president for the NFL’s international business, told NBC Sports’ Peter King in 2023 there has been a shift in how individual franchises view international games.

“Now, it is very much teams raising their hands,” he said. “There’s a reason that the Chiefs and the Patriots are the two designated teams these next two weeks, and that’s based on they have rights here. They raised their hands and said, ‘We want to be over there in Germany.'”

The NFL Players Association presents a hurdle to Goodell’s goal of 16 international games. NFLPA interim executive director David White told the Associated Press’ Rob Maaddi earlier this month that an 18-game regular season “certainly is not inevitable.”

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio also noted the collective bargaining agreement caps the International Series at 10 games. The players’ union would have to sign off on adding to that number.

Given the factors at play, staging one international each week might be a long-term objective for the NFL rather than something fans can expect to see become a reality anytime soon.

Cook believes a reduction in the number of matches would create “wiggle room” for players to have more of a break between them.

He said: “The way the schedule is at the minute, it just isn’t compatible with a high level of performance. We’re not talking about cutting five or 10 games….if you actually look at the number of days you’re going to lose, it’s very minimal.

“You are probably going to get better cricket, a better calibre of overseas players, better pitches, if there is that reduction in cricket.”

He added: “The schedule for this summer, and the last few summers, is wrong and could be that much better.”

Cook has not been selected for England’s Ashes tour to Australia, having taken just one wicket at a cost of 119 runs in his sole Test appearance against Zimbabwe.

But he remains determined to fight his way back into the selectors’ plans, having been one of the most prolific wicket-taking seamers in the English domestic game for several seasons.

“Like any other environment you go into, whether it’s a franchise environment, whether it’s an England environment, you learn and take on information, you work with new people and the exciting thing with that is bringing it back to Essex and hopefully putting in a really strong season next year,” he said.

“For me, it’s pretty clear where my role in that (England) set-up would lie. Obviously I want to break in again and solidify a place.

“Being exposed to the coaches and the way they play their cricket was really eye-opening and makes you want to be a part of it, and feel differently about how we play the game at a county level.

“For me it’s been an incredibly valuable experience and you want to get better and keep improving and get back in there.”

England last won the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2017, when they beat India in a nailbiting final at Lord’s

The 13th edition of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup starts on Tuesday, 30 September, with England hoping to lift the title for a fifth time.

Only defending champions Australia (seven times) have won it more often, with New Zealand the only other country to get their hands on the prize when they triumphed 25 years ago.

Here is everything you need to know about the latest tournament, including the schedule, how to watch and follow on the BBC.

What is the Women’s World Cup?

The World Cup is regarded as the most prestigious competition in women’s cricket and is played once every four years by eight teams (though that will rise to 10 in 2029).

The eight competing nations are: Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

The latest edition is being hosted by India and Sri Lanka, with Pakistan playing all of their matches in Colombo because of the current political situation with neighbours India.

What is the schedule and format of the Women’s World Cup?

Matches are 50 overs per side, with each team playing the other once in the initial round-robin group stage.

The top four progress to the semi-finals, with the group-stage leader playing the team which finished fourth and second and third playing against each other.

India and Sri Lanka open the tournament on 30 September in Guwahati, with England getting their campaign under way against South Africa, also in Guwahati, on 3 October.

Current holders Australia begin against New Zealand in Indore on 1 October and face hosts India in Visakhapatnam on 12 October and Ashes rivals England on 22 October in Indore.

Colombo will host Pakistan’s seven group games, including against India and England. A semi-final and the final will also take place there, if Pakistan make it that far.

When is Women’s World Cup final this year?

The final will be played on 2 November and will be held in Colombo if Pakistan qualify or Navi Mumbai in India if not. It begins at 09:30 GMT.

Who are the past winners?

Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin isn’t a fan of his team’s SEC schedule for the 2026 season.

Kiffin said that the inclusion of Oklahoma as an annual opponent for the Rebels “doesn’t make any sense,” per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN).

“We don’t have anything in common with them or our fans,” Kiffin explained. “That’s unfortunate with so many great teams that we’ve played for a long time here.”

The SEC recently released its nine-game schedule for 2026, which features each team facing off against three conference rivals on an annual basis for the next four seasons. The annual opponents for Ole Miss are LSU, Mississippi State and Oklahoma.

Teams will also play against each conference opponent every two years as part of the updated schedule.

The Rebels and Sooners don’t have much of a shared history, as they’ve only met twice since 1999. Ole Miss won both contests.

Oklahoma spent just over two decades in the Big 12 before joining the SEC ahead of the 2024 season.

Despite the lack of an established rivalry, both schools could develop one with yearly matchups incoming. Oklahoma and Ole Miss are undefeated to start the 2025 season and were ranked No. 7 and No. 13 in the latest AP Top 25 poll, respectively.

The two teams will also face off this year, with the Rebels traveling to battle the Sooners on Oct. 25.

The ACC will join the Big Ten, SEC and Big 12 and play nine conference football games in future seasons.

The league announced Monday that its athletic directors voted in favor of future regular-season schedules that include nine conference games and at least 10 games against Power 4 foes.

“This positions the ACC as one of only two leagues committed to having every team annually play a minimum of 10 games against Power 4 teams,” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said in a statement.

“There will be additional discussions and more details to be determined, but today’s decision showcases the commitment and leadership of our ADs in balancing what is best for strengthening the conference and their respective programs.”

This comes after the SEC announced last month it will implement a nine-game conference schedule starting with the 2026 campaign. It also requires its schools to play at least one additional game against a Power 4 opponent or Notre Dame.

Part of the SEC’s scheduling change will also feature three locked-in opponents for each school that can rotate every four years.

On 3’s Chris Low reported on what those locked-in games will look like in the immediate future:

It remains to be seen whether the ACC will take a similar approach, and Phillips’ statement highlighted the number of decisions that still need to be made. But moving to nine conference games was key to creating more uniformity across the various conferences with the future format of the College Football Playoff still up in the air.

The Big Ten and the Big 12 already play nine conference games and would surely want the other power conferences to do the same if there are going to be a number of at-large bids up for grabs in future CFP formats.

After all, an additional league game means half of the teams in the entire conference will have another loss. Those losses will hurt their resumes and decrease the overall strength of schedule for other teams in the league looking for at-large bids.

That could be particularly important if a 5-11 model is eventually put in place that gives five automatic bids to conference champions and 11 at-large bids.

As for the ACC, it had just two teams in the inaugural 12-team CFP last season. It likely would have only had one if SMU had defeated Clemson in the conference title game, but both teams made the field just to lose in the first round.

While the Tigers are just 1-3 this season and don’t seem like a realistic contender, the conference appears to have more CFP threats as a whole with Miami, Florida State and Georgia Tech all off to strong starts.

The LSU-Ole Miss point spread is indicative of how close the top teams in the SEC are to each other.

LSU is nine spots ahead of Ole Miss in the AP Top 25, but it is a 2.5-point underdog in Oxford on Saturday.

LSU is in that position thanks to some solid play from Garrett Nussmeier and a strong defense.

None of LSU’s four opponents scored more than 10 points against it. It might be hard to contain Ole Miss’ high-powered offense, but the Tigers’ defense is the biggest X-factor in the SEC battle.

Ole Miss allowed its two SEC opponents to score 58 points. That’s concerning because the Kentucky Wildcats and Arkansas Razorbacks aren’t close to the top half of the SEC.

Unless Ole Miss fixes its defensive issues in one week, it’s hard to trust the Rebels, even at home.

LSU’s defense is more trustworthy, and in a close game, that is the one unit that can make a big play or two and shift the course of the SEC contest.

The 2025 Ryder Cup is scheduled for September 26-28 at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course in New York, and the U.S. and European teams are ready to fight for history. Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch the Ryder Cup all week long.

Ryder Cup preview

In recent editions, the Ryder Cup has traded hands back and forth. The home team has been the winning team for the last decade, with Team Europe remaining the last team to win an away Ryder Cup at the 2012 edition at Medinah in Illinois. That year, the Europeans mounted an epic Sunday comeback to win.

Can European captain Luke Donald do it again this year? His team is almost identical to the winning squad he led in 2023. And players like Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Tommy Fleetwood are eager to win on American soil.

But to do so, they’ll have to fight through what are expected to be massive, rowdy crowds full of loud American fans at Bethpage. And they’ll have to get past a stellar U.S. team led by captain Keegan Bradley.

The 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup team features seven of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking. That includes the man who has been at the top of the world ranking for two years, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

There will be 28 matches across three days of play accounting for 28 points. Friday and Saturday will feature eight matches each of foursomes and fourball, with 12 singles matches ending the competition on Sunday. As the defending champions, Europe only needs 14 points to retain the Ryder Cup. The U.S. team needs 14.5 to win it back.

NBC and USA will provide TV coverage for this week’s Ryder Cup. If you prefer to stream the action online, Peacock has you covered with extensive options, including Featured Match coverage and simulcasts of NBC’s TV broadcasts.
