Ronda Rousey has opened up about one of the scariest parts of her MMA career and why she thought her fighting days were over.
For years, the former UFC superstar believed she was suffering from long-term concussion damage after repeated blows left her temporarily blind in the cage. Rousey revealed during her interview on The Breakfast Club that every impact felt like a career-ending moment.
“I had so many concussions since I was a kid and they were getting progressively worse… it got to the point where like any kind of impact at all, I was basically losing my vision.â€
According to Rousey, Dana White encouraged her to take part in a long-term fighter study, which led to a game-changing trip to the Cleveland Clinic. Thatâ€s where she finally got answers she wasnâ€t expecting.
“Dana had me be part of this long-term fighter study… so he sent me to the Cleveland Clinic. The doctor there was the first person to actually give me good news. He said that I used to get migraines as a kid, and people who get migraines are more susceptible to concussions—but he thinks whatâ€s happening is that Iâ€m not actually getting concussions all the time. He said my brain looks better than it should.â€
The doctor explained that Rouseyâ€s frightening in-fight symptoms may not have been concussions at all but something different entirely.
“He thinks that when Iâ€m getting hit, Iâ€m not experiencing concussion symptoms—itâ€s migraine symptoms. Because you can have a migraine without a headache. So I get hit, I lose a big chunk of my vision, I lose depth perception, my ability to track moving objects, or think quickly—and I think, ‘Oh, Iâ€m knocked out. Iâ€m out on my feet.†But heâ€s like, ‘Youâ€re not stumbling around. I donâ€t think itâ€s a concussion. I think itâ€s a migraine.â€â€
For Rousey, this revelation changes everything. What she once believed was permanent neurological decline may actually be treatable.
“So it got to the point where I felt like I couldnâ€t fight safely because if I got hit, I could basically go blind. But now… there are things I can do about it—like address it nutritionally. Itâ€s not the nail in the coffin I thought it was. That was actually really great news. I just donâ€t know what Iâ€m going to do with that yet.â€
Rouseyâ€s admission sheds new light on the end of her UFC career and proves that fans never knew the full story behind her struggles. While a return to fighting remains uncertain, the revelation about her health offers her hope she never expected.
Ronda Rousey hasn’t competed in UFC in years, but rumors continue to persist that she will make a return to the Octagon. When TMZ Sports recently spoke to Rousey, they asked if a comeback was in the works.
“I just had a baby, you know what I mean? Iâ€m just trying to get my bodily identity back and nothing more. Iâ€m just enjoying being in the gym again and feeling a lot better and healthier.”
Rousey gave birth to her and Travis Browneâ€s second daughter in July 2024, naming her Likoâ€ula P?â€?omahinakaipiha Browne. For Rousey, her current focus is on reconnecting with herself post-pregnancy.
“Have you ever had kids? Well, it just feels really good to get that freedom of movement back, you know, and just train for the love of it again. I feel like thatâ€s something that got lost before. So yeah, Iâ€m just really enjoying myself.“
Rousey parted ways with the UFC in 2016 and joined WWE two years later. The former Womenâ€s Champion left WWE in 2023 and has been openly critical of the company and Vince McMahon ever since. Rousey has ruled out a WWE return and has said she believes WWE will erase her impact in pro wrestling.
For the Olympic Bronze medalist, life now revolves around family and self-discovery. While fans may hope to see her return to either the cage or the squared circle, the “Baddest Woman on the Planet†is focused on being a mom.

Ronda Rousey played coy this week when asked about a potential return to the UFC Octagon in the future.
In an interview with TMZ Sports, Rousey was asked if she was training for a UFC comeback, prompting her to respond by saying, “I just had a baby. I’m just trying to get my bodily identity back, and I’m just enjoying being in the gym again. I just feel a lot better and a lot healthier.”
Rousey added: “It just feels really good to get that freedom of movement back and just getting back to training for the love of it. And I feel like that’s something I lost before.”
The line of questioning was spurred by Rousey posting videos of herself working out in the cage and hitting the mitts on Instagram this month.
Rousey, 38, was once heralded as the best women’s MMA fighter in the world, but she has not competed in a fight since 2016.
The inaugural UFC women’s bantamweight champion began her pro MMA career a perfect 12-0 with nine submissions and three knockouts before a shocking loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193 in 2015.
Just over one year later, Rousey stepped back inside the Octagon and got knocked out by Amanda Nunes at UFC 207, marking her final fight.
After that, Rousey transitioned into the world of pro wrestling, enjoying two stints in WWE and becoming a three-time women’s champion, one-time tag team champion, one-time Royal Rumble winner and one-time WrestleMania main eventer in the company.
In January, Rousey gave birth to her second daughter with husband Travis Browne, and her response to questions about fighting again primarily focused on her desire to get in shape following her pregnancy.
UFC President Dana White has usually shot down rumors of a Rousey return to MMA quickly over the years, but his responses to those questions have been more diplomatic recently.
This week, White told reporters of Rousey: “Her and I are still very close and we talk. I would say we probably talk once every three months or something like that. She was in Vegas recently, and she came by the offices, but I don’t know what her plans are. I think she’s just training again.”
White went on to say, “She’s just had another baby, and she’s in great shape right now. She’s frigging ripped like she used to be. So, I don’t know.”
That suggests the chances of Rousey returning to MMA are higher now than they once were, but neither she nor White are making any definitive statements.
Ultimately, the ball is likely in Rousey’s court since UFC would undoubtedly welcome her back with open arms given that she is one of the biggest draws in company history.
Former UFC champion Ronda Rousey walked away from MMA nearly a decade ago, but it sounds like she’s rediscovering her passion for the sport.
Rousey posted a video on Instagram showcasing her progress since returning to MMA training after giving birth to her daughter in January, and she wrote in the caption that she’s fallen back in love with the grind.
“From 8 weeks after having a baby and 8 years of stepping away from MMA to 8 months postpartum and finding my love for it again,” Rousey wrote in the caption.
The 38-year-old admitted that she was self-conscious about her diminished skills since stepping away from MMA following her loss to Amanda Nunes in 2016 and experiencing her current postpartum issues. However, she said her joy for the sport has returned over the past few months.
“The first clip is my first session working with @aj_mma I was super self conscious, embarrassed of how much I regressed, and honestly trying my very best not to pee my pants throwing punches so soon after having baby PÄ’Å«,” Rousey stated. “Second clip was yesterday, I’ve never laughed or smiled so much on the mat as I do these days. The last 6 months have been an absolute blast, feels like I have so much left to grow, and without the weight of the world on my shoulders nothing is holding me back.”
Rousey’s revelation comes amid the UFC’s announced plans for an event at the White House in 2026. The company recently released the first renderings to show what the event would look like.
Rousey even caught the attention of former rival Cris Cyborg, who expressed interest in finally settling their differences in a fight:
It remains to be seen if Rousey’s return to training will lead to an official fight, but the UFC undoubtedly would move mountains to get her back into the Octagon if she’s interested. The White House card would be the biggest spectacle for her potential return.

Sunday Update
— We have both of our weekend shows up, with the Friday show talking about all the news of the week and last night’s show talking about AEW All Out, WWE Wrestlepalooza and CMLL 92nd anniversary show. Bryan and I will be back tomorrow night taking Raw.
— I guess the biggest thing coming out of All Out for Wednesday, besides that apparently the PPV did well and all of a sudden afternoon shows for AEW may be the better idea largely because it’s a lot better for a long show to be in the afternoon, plus it helps with European buys. Crown Jewel is only three weeks away in Perth, so Raw should start the build. We already know Seth Rollins vs. Cody Rhodes, and whoever holds the Smackdown women’s title, will face Stephanie Vaquer in the two main events. We should get at least some ideas for the top matches at WrestleDream on Wednesday. Â
— Outside of the two major shows, the matches we’ve heard the most about to watch for the weekend would be Mistico vs. MJF on Friday which was a classic if you love 1970s wrestling (or today’s wrestling for that matter but aside from using modern moves it felt like the wrestling from another era), Máscara Dorada & Neon & Atlantis Jr. vs. Hechicero & Volador Jr. & Zandokan Jr. from Friday and I’ve been told you have to see Ultimo Guerrero vs. Blue Panther from tonight at Arena Mexico where Panther won the MLW National Openweight title. As best I can tell, Panther would be maybe the oldest singles world champion ever. One person told me that they thought their 8/8 singles match had a better atmosphere but they went all out. The 8/8 match between them was something to see.
— Google trends showed roughly double the interest in Wrestlepalooza as All Out, which should be no surprise. In the searches for both shows the WWE show was 200,000 and AEW was 50,000. AJ Lee and Stephanie Vaquer made the individual search list while nothing from AEW broke out aside from the show itself.
— We should have an idea of how Wrestlepalooza did outside the U.S. on Tuesday when Netflix numbers come out. It will not likely crack the top ten because it didn’t air in the U.S., so we won’t have numbers, but we’ll be able to see how it did in comparison with Raw and Smackdown in the key countries. Hopefully we’ll have a good PPV estimate for All Out by Thursday. Tony Khan said it did very well. We’ll also see how starting at 7 p.m. affected Raw numbers as compared to 8 p.m..
— We’re looking for your thoughts on CMLL Anniversary 92, AEW All Out and Wrestlepalooza, thumbs up, down or middle, best and worst match for each of the three shows to dave@wrestlingobserver.com
— We’re also looking for dark match reports from Friday’s Smackdown tapings.
— We don’t have more details but Mirai announced she was leaving Marigold. Mirai was one of its funding members and biggest stars, as well as someone who helped train the newer wrestlers. She said her last match would be 10/13 at Korakuen Hall.
— The hints are that Orange Cassidy will return as the mystery partner of Kyle O’Reilly & Hologram against the Don Callis Family on Wednesday, plus Tony Khan makes a major announcement. Most seem to think it’s women’s tag team titles and a tournament. I do know he made women’s tag title belts some time back and said injuries delayed starting the tournament.
— Raw in Evansville, IN, has 5,037 tickets out per Wrestletix.
— Ronda Rousey shows photos of her training MMA. Nobody at this point expects her to fight again but she said she’s enjoying her training.
— Defy results from Friday night in Settle: Killer Kross b Calvin Tankman, Nicole Matthews b Amira, Midnight Heat b Randy Myers & Matt Brannigan, Marina Shafir b Hyan to keep the women’s title, Evan Rivers won a four-way over El Phantasmo, Ethan HD and Miles Deville, Bryan Keith b Clark Connors to win the Defy title. The Righteous, Vincent & Dutch, were on the show but didn’t wrestle. Next shows are 10/24 in Portland, OR at the Wonder Ballroom and 11/21 back at Washington Hall in Seattle.
— Heavyweights Ante Delija and Waldo Cortes Acosta headline on the 11/1 UFC show.
— Conor McGregor said that he expects to face Michael Chandler on the White House show in June. Â
— Rafael Fiziev is off the UFC show on 10/11 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, due to an injury. Charles Oliviera, his scheduled opponent, wants to stay on the card.
— Mistico vs.Bandido headlined a show in Golden, CO, tonight.

Ronda Rousey left the world of MMA back in 2016 after a series of devastating losses. Since then, sheâ€s always had a complicated relationship with MMA. However, it seems Cris Cyborg is now pushing Ronda Rousey to come out of retirement for another MMA fight.
Ronda Rousey took to her Instagram and uploaded a video, stating that after giving birth and being away from MMA for eight years, sheâ€s found her passion for the sport again just eight months postpartum.
Rousey said her first training session left her feeling self-conscious and embarrassed about how much sheâ€d regressed, even worrying about postpartum issues like not peeing during punches.
But in a clip from yesterday, she said sheâ€s never smiled or laughed so much on the mat. The last six months have been a blast, and now free of outside pressure, she feels like nothing can hold her back as she keeps growing.
“From 8 weeks after having a baby and 8 years of stepping away from MMA to 8 months postpartum and finding my love for it again.

The last 6 months have been an absolute blast, feels like I have so much left to grow, and without the weight of the world on my shoulders nothing is holding me back.
“What we learn with pleasure we never forget†Alfred Mercierâ€
MMA legend Cris Cyborg took to Twitter and responded to Ronda Rousey saying she has regained her love for MMA, as she made it clear she wants Rousey to come out of retirement and fight her, saying, “CyborgXRondaâ€
Whether Ronda Rousey comes out of retirement or not, Cris Cyborgâ€s open challenge has already created a lot of hype in the combat sports world. A fight between these two legends would be huge and could attract massive attention from both MMA and pro wrestling fans. So weâ€ll have to see what will happen in the end.
