Matt Riddleâ€s name always seems to come with controversy attached, whether itâ€s backstage behavior or viral headlines. But Rob Van Dam isnâ€t jumping on the hate train — instead, heâ€s defending his longtime friend as someone people just donâ€t fully understand.

While speaking with Bill Apter, the WWE Hall of Famer opened up about his relationship with Riddle and why he still stands by him. According to RVD, thereâ€s more to Riddle than people online give him credit for.

“Mattâ€s a good dude, from what I know of him. Heâ€s one of my friends. He definitely has some crazy sides to him and some parts I donâ€t really connect with, but thatâ€s normal — everyoneâ€s got different sides. The parts I do relate to are the ones that matter.â€

RVD admitted he sees why people often lump them together. The stoner image, chill attitude, and even the barefoot wrestling style connect the two — even though most fans forget RVD used to wrestle without boots, too.

“People always compare Matt to me, probably because of the cannabis thing, maybe the laid-back attitude. We both wrestled barefoot too, though most people donâ€t even remember that about me. I think the cannabis connection is what people see most.â€

But itâ€s Riddleâ€s loud personality and tendency to stir things up that gets him into trouble, RVD says. And while itâ€s easy for fans to pile on, he believes the hate is often overblown.

“He likes to fight, heâ€s not passive, and heâ€s not afraid to speak his mind. Heâ€ll stir things up and say, ‘Iâ€m just telling the truth, man.†Maybe some of that comes from inexperience or being younger — maybe he still has something to prove to himself or others.â€

Referencing past incidents like the backlash Riddle received for no-showing a UK charity event, RVD called out internet fans for reacting before knowing the facts.

“When that recent scandal happened, headlines said he no-showed a fundraiser — and thatâ€s all people needed to attack him. They donâ€t read the article or wait for his side. Three words in a headline and theyâ€re ready to hate, hiding behind keyboards. Thatâ€s society today — internet marks with short attention spans.â€

Despite the constant scrutiny, RVD says Riddle isnâ€t fazed by the backlash. In fact, he sees right through the fake outrage and moves on.

“Matt knows that, though. He shrugs it off because he understands how shallow that loyalty really is. So, no concern.â€

RVDâ€s loyalty to Riddle is clear — he sees a friend trying to navigate fame in a world where one wrong word can trend in minutes. Whether Riddle can stay out of trouble going forward is anyoneâ€s guess, but according to RVD, the hate isnâ€t always earned.

Former WWE star Matt Riddle has talked about his relationship with Seth Rollins and whether there was any real animosity between them.

Riddle recently spoke to “TMZ Sports,” where he playfully mocked pro wrestling fans, calling them gullible for believing whatever news reports said about wrestlers.

“Unfortunately, because pro wrestling, granted, your fans are pretty gullible, right? So if they hear one and they don’t know what’s fuc**ng real, they don’t know what’s real. You guys sometimes don’t know what’s real. Everything’s mostly a work, dude,” he said.Â

Riddle stated that he told Rollins to speak ill of him in the storyline during their rivalry, particularly about why his wife left him, which many considered a touchy subject to broach on television. He then discussed his rivalry with him during his time in WWE and how they worked together even though they weren’t really friends.

“I told Seth Rollins to talk sh*t about my wife leaving me and taking my kids. And it’s like, oh, you know why she was able to do that? Because I was working like five days a week, traveling the world and I couldn’t take care of three kids,” said the former WWE star. “If we’re in a locker room, I think he’s a swell guy and he’s great. If I see him outside, swell guy, great. If I see him at the same restaurant, are we going to be like, ‘Oh, let’s sit together.’ Probably not. I’ll let him enjoy his meal. I’ll enjoy my meal. We just never hit it off like that. But we work very well together. I think he’s a great wrestler.”

Riddle clarified that he doesn’t think Rollins is a “terrible person,” but wanted to give him space, as Rollins is usually with his wife and fellow WWE star Becky Lynch in their bus, while Riddle was in the locker room. He, however, revealed that he spent more time with Randy Orton, his former tag team partner, during his time in WWE, even joining him on his bus.

Vince McMahon isn’t exactly a favorite among most pro wrestling fans, with many rarely having kind words for the disgraced former WWE Chairman. However, Matt Riddle has praised one aspect of McMahon’s booking, something he feels neither Triple H nor Tony Khan does.

McMahon, during his time leading WWE creative, was often criticized for not listening to the fans and giving them what they wanted. Riddle thinks that this is a good trait for a wrestling booker, which he explained during his recent appearance on “TMZ Sports.”

“I will say, the one thing I loved about Vince is, Vince was like, ‘This is my company. I run it. It’s my company.’ It didn’t matter if the fans were like, ‘Oh, we don’t like this.’ The storyline was going to go as long as Vince wanted it to. And with that, it kind of works better if you don’t give people everything they want,” he said. “It’s like a plant — or anything else. If you give it everything you think it wants, just like a kid, they get slow, they don’t appreciate what they have, etc. But just like a plant, if you let it starve a little bit, then you feed it, it gets stronger, it gets healthier, it eats more, you know? And I feel like fans are like that too. If you give them everything they want, like that dream match tomorrow, what are they going to tune in for next week, you know?” he said.

The former WWE star believes that McMahon would stick to his guns and follow through with his original ideas, something he feels neither Triple H, who currently oversees WWE creative, nor AEW’s Tony Khan do.

“I feel like Triple H bends a little more [to what fans want]. Tony [Khan] definitely bends a lot, you know.”

Riddle wasn’t favored by McMahon at first, as the latter considered him too goofy for his liking. Their equation changed later on, and Riddle recently even discussed the possibility of working with McMahon again if he were to start a pro wrestling company.

Roman Reigns forced former WWE star Matt Riddle to apologize after the latter’s comments went viral.

Roman Reigns is the top star in WWE without a shadow of doubt. The star is not only one of the best performers in the world, but also has a commanding presence with his aura. The longest-reigning Universal Champion of all time has also been accused of several different things in his career. One of the things that got Reigns really mad came from Matt Riddle, who stated a few weeks ago that Reigns may be able to beat Bro in a WWE ring, but outside the ring, in a street fight, or inside a cage, The OTC did not stand a chance against the former United States Champion.

Now, Riddle has revealed that Roman Reigns “flipped out” because of the comments and sent him a text message.

Former WWE Star Matt Riddle Reveals What Roman Reigns Texted Him After The Comments

In an interview with TMZ, the former United States Champion revealed that Roman Reigns texted him after the comments and was not pleased with what was said in public. Riddle also doubled down on his comments and stated that what he said was true.

They asked me to talk crap about Roman. I told everybody, ‘Hey, he might beat me in the ring, but if we were in a cage or in the street, Iâ€d beat the hell out of him.†And he knows that, and I know that and everybody else knows that.â€

The former RK-Bro member stated that The OTC “flipped out.”

Dude, he flipped out. He texted me… ‘Not cool, dude.†And I was like, ‘Oh [__]!†Like, I apologized.â€

Matt Riddle apparently wrote a lengthy apology and showed it to Randy Orton for approval, with The Viper coming to his aid.

So I wrote like this long apology. I go, ‘Randy, how does this look?†And Randy goes, ‘Nah, this isnâ€t right.†He rewrites it, and it was basically like: ‘My bad, bro. Maybe weâ€ll work again someday soon.â€â€ [H/T RSN]

Riddle later went on to attack the TMZ reporter in a crazy turn of events.

You never know what Matt Riddle will speak about when heâ€s given an open forum. This is especially true if he has someone to address.

Matt Riddle was speaking to TMZ Sports†Inside The Ring when the topic of Booker T came up. Booker had recently said that Riddle burned bridges with WWE through his comments. He also claimed that Riddle showed little respect for the business and made it harder for himself to return.

Riddle responded with a mix of humor and honesty in signature cadence, which is how he addresses many things. “I wouldnâ€t say heâ€s 100% wrong, you know,â€Riddle said. He then brought up CM Punk as an example of someone who came back after bigger issues.

“Not to bring up old people, but CM Punk… he filed a lawsuit against WWE for years, right? And heâ€s there. So… and best wrestler in the world.â€

“Booker T… he speaks out a lot. Talks all about everything on his podcast. Every time Iâ€ve seen Booker T face to face, heâ€s a gentleman. Heâ€s a scholar. Heâ€s giving me [] for not wearing shoes. Heâ€s telling me, ‘Youâ€re not professional. You donâ€t wear shoes.†Iâ€m like, ‘What the [] does that mean, dude? Iâ€ll kick you in the face for not wearing a shoe, you know.â€â€

Matt Riddle finished with a direct message to Booker T. He addressed the two-time WWE Hall of Famer by saying that he has no beef with him.

“Youâ€re sweet as candy, brother. But whenever thereâ€s some interview or Twitter, thatâ€s why I have no beef. And I feel like youâ€re the same way. Youâ€re going to talk your feelings. Youâ€re going to say what youâ€re going to say.â€

Matt Riddle also addressed his beef with Brock Lesnar during this interview. He accused the Beast Incarnate of going into business for himself. So, there are a few people in the pro wrestling world who may not see things on Riddleâ€s level.

Although some may want to avoid speaking out about their firing, Matt Riddle also spoke openly about his WWE release. He also brought attention to the fact that it went down just before he was slated to get a hefty payday.

At the time of his WWE release, Matt Riddle had reportedly burned too many chances with the company. Ringside News also exclusively reported at the time that Matt Riddleâ€s WWE release came after a dozen or more backstage infractions.

Matt Riddle might be known as the King of Bros, but heâ€s now teasing a new title—Governor of Florida.

During his TMZâ€s Inside the Ring appearance, the former WWE star took a break from wrestling talk and got surprisingly political. What started as a throwaway line quickly turned into something more serious. “Matt Riddle, governor of Florida…†But then Riddle made it clear heâ€s not just joking around.

“You know, I think itâ€s about time for a change. I think Iâ€m very relatable. I feel like right now the country is so separated in two. We need to meet in the middle.â€

Riddle emphasized that heâ€s not a hardcore Republican or Democrat, placing himself squarely in what he called the “gray area.â€

“I think the majority of us are very much in this gray area. Thatâ€s where Iâ€m at — Iâ€m in the gray area.â€

When asked whether heâ€d affiliate with a party, he didnâ€t commit either way:

“Weâ€ll see where the favor lies. Honestly, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party — theyâ€ve changed greatly over the years.â€

He spoke on Floridaâ€s political makeup and why he thinks he can represent such a divided population.

“Floridaâ€s very diverse. People think itâ€s all conservative, but itâ€s not. The rural areas lean conservative, but the cities are very liberal. Itâ€s got a balance.â€

Riddle believes someone like him—whoâ€s lived all over the state, wrestled in every corner of it, and sees both sides—could make a real difference.

“I think there needs to be a middle. I think thatâ€s where I come in.â€

Whether or not he files the paperwork remains to be seen, but one thingâ€s clear: Riddle isnâ€t just trying to entertain anymore. Heâ€s eyeing something bigger than the squared circle.
