Fans React as Shubman Gill Replaces Rohit Sharma as ODI Captain: The announcement of Shubman Gill as Indiaâ€s new ODI captain set social media on fire. Some hailed it as the dawn of a new chapter in Indian cricket, one fan writing, “New era in white-ball cricket starts from the Australia tour 2025.â€
One user called it “pure clownery,†arguing that Rohit, who led India to two ICC trophies recently and lost just one match in three tournaments, deserved better and shouldnâ€t have been replaced so easily. Raazi expressed similar frustration, saying that making Gill captain while Rohit remains in the team felt disrespectful.Â
Others immediately shifted the spotlight to Yashasvi Jaiswal, insisting, “Need Yashasvi in T20 too. Itâ€s really difficult for him to get picked in the ODI XI. Guy needs to score centuries, and big ones, to get selected. Canâ€t see another talent washout.â€
What really shocked many was the idea of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma playing under Gillâ€s leadership, with one fan exclaiming, “Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma play under Shubham Gillâ€s captaincy.†But not everyone was on board. Some voices turned dark, with one angry user lashing out: “I donâ€t have anything to say atp, just hope he fails terribly and remembers how terrible he was and dies the most painful way.â€

India vs Australia Squad: Shubman Gill has been named as the captain of the Indian Cricket Team for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, replacing Rohit Sharma in that role. This likely brings an end to Sharmaâ€s era of captaincy for the national team.
India is currently playing a two-match Test series against the West Indies at home. The hosts won the first Test in Ahmedabad within three days by an innings and 140 runs. The second game in Delhi will be played from October 10th to 14th. A few days after that, the tour of Australia will begin on October 19th.
India will visit Australia to play three ODIs and five T20Is. This will be the second time that the Men in Blue will be down under this year, as they played the latter half of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in January.
BCCI has announced the Indian Cricket Team squad for both the ODI and T20I series. While the shorter-format side is not too noteworthy, the ODI side has made a lot of waves since it was announced.
Check Out: India vs Australia Squad
Firstly, it is the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to the national team for the first time in about eight months. The two featured in the BGT 2024/25. They then led India to a win in the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, in May, they announced their retirements from Test cricket, with these announcements coming only a couple of days apart.
This meant that the two did not represent India during the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England against the Three Lions this summer. And with them having announced their T20I retirement last year, they also did not play in the Asia Cup 2025.
However, Rohit Sharmaâ€s return to the ODI side comes with a caveat. While Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill took over the T20I and Test captaincy after Rohit retired from these formats, the ODI side was still led by him. And so, it was assumed that in the upcoming ODIs against Australia, Sharma would captain the team.
However, that is not the case, as Gill, who is already Indiaâ€s Test captain, has taken over the leadership role in ODIs as well.
In other major news regarding the ODI team, Shreyas Iyer, who has done exceptionally well in international and domestic cricket this year, is the teamâ€s vice-captain.
India vs Australia Squad
Here is the Indian Cricket Team squad for the upcoming ODIs vs Australia.
India ODI squad: Shubman Gill (C), Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (wk), Dhruv Jurel (wk), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammad Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana
As for the T20I squad, it is almost identical to that of the winning side of the Asia Cup 2025.
India T20I squad: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (wk), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana.
The first ODI of this tour will be played on October 19th at Perth, followed by games in Adelaide and Sydney. On the other hand, the T20Is will be played in Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Gold Coast, and Brisbane.
