The much-awaited return to international cricket for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, and their legions of fans who had woken up early on a Sunday morning of the festival weekend in India, was spoiled by Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc as both the senior Indian batsmen were dismissed for single-digit scores in the IND vs AUS 1st ODI.
The IND vs AUS three-match ODI series got underway at Perthâ€s Optus Stadium, which is known for its spicy, pace-friendly pitch where Australia had previously lost all their ODI matches.
Another challenging surface was dished out today by the Optus curators, and matters were made worse for India as Mitchell Marsh, the stand-in Australian captain, won the toss and elected to bowl first with the rain threat around, which made the conditions even more advantageous for the Australian pacers who ensured their team got a rocking start.
Rohit and Kohli were in superb nick in their last ODI assignment, which was the ICC Champions Trophy. However, that tournament was played in the UAE in March.
Now, six months later, on a bouncy surface in Australia, with no international match practice behind them, both Rohit and Kohli failed to get to double digits, with the latter bagging his first-ever duck on Australian soil.
Rohit Sharma, whose ODI captaincy has been taken away, did play a gorgeous straight drive off Starc to collect his first boundary. But the metronomic Hazlewood got the better of the senior Indian opener with a typical back-of-length delivery in the channel outside the off-stump, the ball bouncing extra than Rohit anticipated with his poke, and he edged it to Matt Renshaw at second slip.
In came Virat Kohli, whose last Test century came at this very venue last year. But today, the 36-year-old had to walk back with only a duck to his name. He was tested initially by accurate line and length from Starc and was lucky not to outside edge behind as he missed his drive far away from his body. A maiden over.
In Starcâ€s next over, Kohli went for a drive again to a delivery once again well outside the off-stump. The Indian superstar didnâ€t care for looking to keep it down on the ground; his uppish, mishit drive flew to the left of the backward point fielder, Cooper Connolly, who took an excellent diving catch.
The excitement of the fans to watch Ro-Ko back in India colors was dimmed in just over half an hour of the match. Netizens let out their disappointment and frustrations with the two seniors on Twitter.

Clayton Kershaw’s first appearance this postseason turned into a disaster, as the future Hall of Famer allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits over two innings pitching out of the bullpen in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 8-2 loss to the Philadelphia Philles in Game 3 of the National League Division Series.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Kershaw summed up his outing in succinct fashion.
“Just didn’t make enough good pitches,” said Kershaw. “I was battling command. It’s hard when you’re trying to throw strikes as opposed to getting people out. Just wasn’t a fun thing.”
Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts admitted after the game it was “hard to watch” everything that happened to Kershaw in the decisive eighth inning:
“It was hard to watch. But we can’t use two innings to—he’s going to have a statue out in front of Dodger Stadium. Kind of keep that in mind and understand that, in the grand scheme of things, Kershaw is a first-ballot Hall of Famer, one of the best to ever do it. So if you let two innings kind of ruin that, you don’t know baseball.”
The Dodgers were trailing 3-1 when Kershaw came into the game to start the seventh inning. His first inning wasn’t exactly smooth with a single and walk allowed to the first two batters he faced, but he escaped it without giving up a run.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts rolled the dice by letting Kershaw, who last pitched on Sept. 28, go out for a second inning of work. Things fell apart right away with J.T. Realmuto leading off the eighth with a homer, followed by a walk, an error by third baseman Max Muncy, a sacrifice bun, RBI single from Trea Turner and a two-run homer by Kyle Schwarber.
After the next two hitters also got hits, Kershaw finally got out of the inning when Brandon Marsh flew out to deep center. The score was 8-1 by the time his night ended.
This was Kershaw’s second consecutive postseason appearance in which he didn’t record a strikeout. He allowed six runs and recorded just one out in a Game 1 start against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2023 NLDS.
Kershaw’s ERA pitching out of the bullpen in the postseason now sits at 6.75 with nine earned runs allowed in 12 innings over eight games dating back to 2008. Wednesday was his first relief appearance in the playoffs since Game 5 of the 2019 NLCS against the Washington Nationals.
Even though Kershaw was included on the Dodgers’ NLDS roster after not being included on the wild card roster, it wasn’t clear if he would appear in a game.
Roberts told reporters prior to Game 2 on Monday that there were “scenarios” to use the veteran left-hander, including late-inning or extra-inning situations, but he also said there are other pitchers on the roster “I feel we’re more comfortable with.”
It may have been unfair for Roberts to try squeezing a second inning out of Kershaw after he escaped his first frame without allowing a run. The results went about as bad as they possibly could have in the eighth, turning a still-competitive game into a blowout and giving the Phillies life in the series.
The Dodgers still have another home game on Thursday to try closing out the NLDS. They will send Tyler Glasnow to the mound against Cristopher Sánchez looking to secure their second consecutive trip to the National League Championship Series.
Fans React as Shubman Gill Replaces Rohit Sharma as ODI Captain: The announcement of Shubman Gill as Indiaâ€s new ODI captain set social media on fire. Some hailed it as the dawn of a new chapter in Indian cricket, one fan writing, “New era in white-ball cricket starts from the Australia tour 2025.â€
One user called it “pure clownery,†arguing that Rohit, who led India to two ICC trophies recently and lost just one match in three tournaments, deserved better and shouldnâ€t have been replaced so easily. Raazi expressed similar frustration, saying that making Gill captain while Rohit remains in the team felt disrespectful.Â
Others immediately shifted the spotlight to Yashasvi Jaiswal, insisting, “Need Yashasvi in T20 too. Itâ€s really difficult for him to get picked in the ODI XI. Guy needs to score centuries, and big ones, to get selected. Canâ€t see another talent washout.â€
What really shocked many was the idea of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma playing under Gillâ€s leadership, with one fan exclaiming, “Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma play under Shubham Gillâ€s captaincy.†But not everyone was on board. Some voices turned dark, with one angry user lashing out: “I donâ€t have anything to say atp, just hope he fails terribly and remembers how terrible he was and dies the most painful way.â€

India won their ninth Asia Cup trophy as they beat Pakistan in the final on Sunday in Dubai, doing a 3-0 over Salman Aghaâ€s side in this edition of the tournament.
But while the previous two wins were comfortable, this one went down to the wire, and at one point, Pakistan even had the upper hand.
India began their chase of 147 on a disastrous note, losing the in-form Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Suryakumar Yadav for the score of only 20 runs in four overs as Faheem Ashraf and Shaheen Afridi cleverly used the variation deliveries.
Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma brought India some control with a partnership of 57 runs off 50 balls before the right-hander was caught at point off Abrar Ahmed.
Another partnership for India was forged between Varma, who held his end, reaching his half-century off 41 balls, and Shivam Dube, who blasted two sixes and a four to bring the equation down to 17 runs required off the last 12 balls.
Faheem got pulled for a four by Dube, but the left-hander was caught at long-on on the last ball of the over, leaving India needing 10 off the last six deliveries. With the tension palpable and eight runs needed off five balls, Varma pulled Rauf for a six on the second delivery of the over to all but seal the win. Varma remained unbeaten on 69 off 53 balls.
Earlier, Pakistan, with the bat, had a boom followed by a bust. Sahibzada Farhan continued his upper hand over Jasprit Bumrah from the Super Four fixture, cracking the Indian spearhead pacer for two fours and a six in his two powerplay overs.
Pakistan ended the powerplay at 45/0. In the next 3.3 overs, Farhan and Zaman launched the Indian spinners for three sixes and a four. However, Pakistan then suffered a mighty collapse from thereon.
Varun Chakaravarthy dismissed Farhan for 57(38). Kuldeep and Axar, too, made dents, dismissing Saim Ayub and Mohammad Haris in the 13th and 14th overs, respectively.
Zaman tonked Chakaravarthy for a sixer over long-on, but the Indian mystery spinner had the last laugh as the left-hander miscued to backward point. Zaman scored 46 off 35 balls. In the next over, Axar got rid of Hussain Talat.
In the 17th over, bowled by Kuldeep, Pakistanâ€s innings derailed completely as they lost three wickets, those of Salman Agha, Shaheen Afridi, and Faheem Ashraf. The over yielded three wickets for India and only one run for Pakistan, which came off a wide delivery.
Bumrah claimed the last two wickets, completing another famous Pakistani collapse—from 113/1 to 146 all out. Pakistan lost their last nine wickets for only 33 runs. Where once they looked to touch 200, they couldnâ€t even get to 150.
This victory fired up the Indian fans on Twitter, who expressed their emotions in various forms. Even Indiaâ€s Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team, invoking Operation Sindoor.
Modi tweeted: “#OperationSindoor on the games field. Outcome is the same – India wins! Congrats to our cricketersâ€

It was natural that after Operation Sindoor, we needed an Operation Tilak.

First you got screwed by Sindoor.
And now you got screwed by Tilak. For every fictional 6-0, there is a real 3-0.
F off now.

Tilak has definitely done very well on supposed clutch metric, first that sensational innings against England to singlehandedly chase a big total and now this one also added to the catalogue.

Oh, nerves of steel from Tilak Varma. The man has wonderful temperament ðŸ‘
Yes, I am happy that my premonition went wrong. The dropped catch and run out chance being missed… divine intervention.

Two of England’s senior players acknowledge that fierce rivals Australia were “smarter” than them during their T20 World Cup defeat on Saturday.
Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali have admitted that England were thoroughly outplayed during their T20 World Cup defeat to Australia.
Having had to settle for a draw in a rain-hit match with Scotland earlier in the week, England were under pressure to deliver against their fierce rivals on Saturday.
However, Australia were ruthless with the bat in setting up victory in Barbados, compiling 201-7 before restricting their opponents to just 165-6 in their reply.
Australia reached 70-1 off the first five overs, Travis Head (34 off 18) and David Warner (39 off 16) setting the tone, and the big-hitting continued throughout the innings with 13 maximums being struck in total.
Jofra Archer (1-28) was England’s most economical bowler and it appeared to have kept his side in the match, as Phil Salt (37) and Buttler (42) put on 73 in seven overs.
Nevertheless, wickets then began to fall at regular intervals and the game was effectively up when Moeen (25) departed with England on 128-5, still requiring 74 runs from 26 balls.

What did Buttler, Moeen have to say?
Speaking to BBC Test Match Special, Buttler and Moeen both hinted that, while England must assess what went wrong, they need to think proactively about how to turn things around.
Buttler said: “I thought we were outplayed today by Australia. They played really well in the powerplay and put us under a lot of pressure straight away.
“We know the position we’re in. It’s exactly laid out for us how we need to go about it. We can review this game and move on and plan for the next one.”
Moeen added: “I just felt that Australia were better than us on the day in all three facets. They were smarter than us with the ball and used the conditions really well.
“We’ve just got to be a bit more precise and when we come on to bowl. You have to get in and bowl your ball straight away and try and make something happen and not hope something will happen. We need to defend when we need to defend and attack when we need to attack.”
What now for England?
Although England will back themselves to defeat Oman and Namibia in their remaining two fixtures, they will require help from elsewhere to finish in the top two of Group B.
Scotland already have a far superior net run-rate to England (0.736 to -1.8) and that will also need to be overturned as a bare minimum if Scotland defeat Oman on Sunday.
England are not back in action until they face the same opponents on Thursday, potentially facing a four-point deficit with two games to play, while Scotland’s concluding fixture is against Australia.
