In August this year, viral footage was shared across social media showing MMA fighter, Raja Jackson – son of UFC legend “Rampage Jackson – brutally attacking a wrestler, later identified as indie wrestler Syko Stu, in the ring and continuing to pummel him long after he was clearly knocked out. Since then, Jackson has been arrested, and former WWE wrestler and lawyer David Otunga has reacted to the news and shared what options Jackson has now.

“I wasn’t surprised that this happened, I just was surprised that it took so long!” Otunga said during an appearance on the “Something To Wrestle” podcast with JBL, adding that Jackson was only arrested after 26 days. “The amount of people that were speculating why that was – myself included – I feel like the police had a hard time figuring out what exactly happened here. Was this a work, was this a shoot?” Otunga further emphasized that the usage of wrestling terms like “receipt” during the clip likely made it difficult for investigators to properly file it as a crime.

“If you watched the video and you saw what happened, you know there was a crime!” he noted, however. “So, I think it was more them trying to figure out what the exact crime was.” Otunga further expressed that he believes Jackson got the correct charge, and noted that attempted murder is more difficult to prove than the felony Jackson was charged with. “I think it’s in Raja’s best interest to try and get a plea deal, because his stream and his video? This is damning evidence. (…) I think that is gonna be a slam dunk for prosecutors.”

It doesn’t look like Syko Stu ever intends to get back in the ring following the injuries he sustained in Raja Jackson’s attack.

While speaking with TMZ, wrestler Douglas Malo said that — from what he’s heard — Stu’s career in the ring is “done.” Malo, a friend of Stu’s, was one of the wrestlers who intervened to stop Jackson’s attack when it occurred at a KnokX Pro Wrestling show on August 23.

“His close friend that I talked to thatâ€s throwing this [benefit] event said that Stu’s done with any ring work,” Malo responded when TMZ asked if he thinks Stu would like to wrestle again to help find closure.

“And then I also know about some of the stuff that he was dealing with from when I talked to his wife last and his friends, I donâ€t think being in the ring would work ever again.”

Malo said he thinks it would be cool to do an angle where Stu makes a save for him — reversing the situation that played out when he helped stop Jackson’s attack. But Malo doesn’t know if even that would be a smart idea.

“That was a lot of damage he received, plus what he was already dealing with,” Malo said. “You know, he wasnâ€t necessarily a spring chicken before the event. So I donâ€t know.â€

A show to help Stu is being put on by Valor Pro Wrestling on November 15. Malo is excited to see Stu there and give him a hug. To this point, Malo has tried to mostly avoid reaching out to Stu directly because he doesn’t want Stu to have to relive the trauma he experienced.

Stu (Stuart Smith) is a U.S. Army veteran who has used wrestling as a way to help deal with PTSD. A GoFundMe to support his recovery from Jackson’s attack has raised more than $220,000.

This week, Jackson — the son of UFC legend Quinton “Rampage” Jackson — appeared in a Los Angeles court and entered a not guilty plea in response to the two charges he’s facing. He could potentially serve up to seven years in jail if convicted.

Syko Stuâ€s in-ring career may have come to an abrupt end following the violent assault by Raja Jackson that left him hospitalized with multiple injuries.

Doug Malo recently spoke to TMZ Sports about Stuâ€s condition and whether fans might ever see him wrestle again. When asked if returning to the ring could be a goal for Stu, Malo admitted it wasnâ€t realistic—but revealed that a special tribute event is already being planned.

Malo confirmed that Valor Pro Wrestling will hold an event for Stu on November 15, which he plans to attend. He explained that being part of the show would give him some closure.

“Thereâ€s going to be an event for Stu with Valor Pro Wrestling around November 15th, and I plan to see him there. Iâ€m really looking forward to it because itâ€ll give me some closure.â€

According to Malo, Stuâ€s close friend who is helping organize the event has already said Stu is finished with any in-ring work. After speaking with Stuâ€s wife and friends, Malo agreed that returning to the ring isnâ€t an option given his health struggles.

“His close friend, who I talked to and whoâ€s organizing the event, said that Stu is done with any in-ring work. I also know about some of the things heâ€s been dealing with from my last conversation with his wife and friends. I donâ€t think getting back in the ring would ever work again. I think it would be kind of cool if we could maybe reverse the roles—like I get beat up in the ring, and he comes out with his music, stands on the apron, and sends people in. You know what I mean? I think thatâ€s as far as we could go from here. But honestly, I donâ€t think it would be smart at this point. He took a lot of damage, and with what he was already dealing with, he wasnâ€t exactly a spring chicken even before the incident.â€

The attack and its aftermath appear to have closed the door on any full return to wrestling for Syko Stu, despite the passion and energy he still carried for the business. Still, fans and fellow wrestlers will come together at the upcoming Valor Pro Wrestling event to honor him with a proper send-off, celebrating one of the most respected veterans in the sport.

Do you think Syko Stu should still make a symbolic appearance at the event even if he canâ€t wrestle again? Share your thoughts in the comments and let us know how youâ€d like to see him honored.

Raja Jackson pleaded not guilty to a count of felony battery that caused serious bodily injury and a count of misdemeanor battery after slamming wrestler Stuart Smith (Syko Stu) to the mat during a KnokX event in Los Angeles in August, per ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

Jackson, the son of former MMA fighter Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, had to be restrained by several other wrestlers after he continued punching a clearly unconscious Smith. He was arrested and bail was set at $50,000.

Per Okamoto, “In a livestream prior to going on, Jackson said he intended to get his revenge on Smith for a brief altercation between the two earlier that day. Smith had hit Jackson with a beer can in an apparent altercation to promote the event.”

Smith said he suffered a head injury, various injuries to his jaw, lost teeth and had a laceration on his lip.

Rampage Jackson condemned his son’s actions on social media in August:

“I thought it was a part of the show,” he wrote at the time. “It was bad judgement, and a work that went wrong. Raja is a MMA fighter not a pro wrestler and had no business involved in an event like this. I don’t condone my son’s actions AT ALL! He suffered a concussion from sparring only days ago and had no business doing anything remotely close to physical contact.”

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office is seeking a sentence of up to seven years.
