IPL trade: RR, DC close to Sanju Samson, Tristan Stubbs swap; KKR press for KL Rahul | EXCLUSIVEWith Sanju Samson clear on leaving the Rajasthan unit, both DC and RR have been locked in negotiations and many tradable options were discussed along the way. (BCCI Photo) NEW DELHI: Sanju Samson and Tristan Stubbs are likely to be involved in the first big trade before the IPL auction later this year as both Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Delhi Capitals (DC) are getting close to finalising the deal. With Samson clear on leaving the Royals, both DC and RR have been locked in negotiations and many tradable options were discussed along the way. It is reliably learnt that DC are keen to have Samson on board but were not willing to trade any of their core players.KL Rahul’s name came up for discussions for the swap but DC were reluctant to let go of a player who had been their key performer last season and brings a lot of brand value. RR are happy with the idea of having Stubbs in their camp but it’s understood that they asked for another uncapped player alongside the South African. That, however, wasn’t entertained by the Capitals and there is a bright possibility of seeing Samson back in DC colours from the next IPL season.

In the last few months, RR have had discussions with other franchises, too, regarding Samson and TimesofIndia.com can confirm an approach was made to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for Ravindra Jadeja. RR wanted to swap Samson for Jadeja but the talks didn’t materialise after the initial interest. At this stage, Samson to DC and Stubbs to RR looks a strong possibility if there are no late hiccups from the two parties.KKR want KL Rahul but for whom?Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), meanwhile, continue to press for KL Rahul as they are desperate to have a captain and top-order bat in their ranks. The camaraderie between new head coach Abhishek Nayar and Rahul is not a secret, and even the top management of the franchise is eager to bring him on board. The big question, however, remains who goes the other way? As of now, KKR don’t seem to have a tradable asset which would excite the DC unit. There are strong murmurs of Andre Russell’s name as an option but DC want to invest in youth and players they can bank on for the next few years. The only tradable assets in the squad are Rinku Singh and Varun Chakravarthy, and it seems unlikely that they will let go of either of them.Venkatesh Iyer’s poor last season is unlikely to attract any serious takers and the all-rounder could well find himself back in the auction pool. KKR are one of the franchises which is likely to go hard for Cameron Green and releasing Iyer gives them the purse to do that. The KL Rahul situation continues to be delicately placed and if the DC-RR swap materialises, KKR could well pursue it with more intent.

Brazilian winger Denilson is often cited as one of the biggest transfer flops in recent history, following the winger’s world record £21.5million move from Sao Paulo to Real Betis in 1998.

That saw him break the record set by his international team-mate Ronaldo 12 months earlier and big things were predicted from the 21-year-old who had broken into the Brazil national side as a teenager and played in that summer’s World Cup final.

“In 1996, I got my first Brazil call-up,” Denilson recalls to FourFourTwo. “Suddenly, rumours of European clubs swirled. I was linked to Milan, Barça, Real Madrid, Manchester United. By 1998 things got serious. Then one day, Sao Paulo’s president summoned me and my former agent. That alone was terrifying for a kid, since contact with the president was rare.

“He told me the club had received a $12 million bid from Barcelona and intended to accept it. I had no clue what $12m even worked out as in reais. At that point, whatever they said, I would have agreed to it.

“I went home and told my parents I was off to Barça. But then Betis arrived, offering $32m (£21.5m). Brazilian law at the time meant I was entitled to just 15 per cent of that sum, but still, it was a life-changing amount of money. More than twice the offer from Barça and a chance to secure my family’s future.

“Today people always talk about career planning. Back then, that didn’t exist. My train was there and I had to jump on it. My first priority was sorting out my parents’ lives, the rest came after. Only later, when the press highlighted it, did I realise it was a world-record transfer fee. Honestly, I barely cared. My only concern was giving my family comfort.

“Between 1995 and the 1998 World Cup Final, my career had been magical. Everything at Sao Paulo felt like a dream. We won the state championship before I left, and I went to my first World Cup on the back of that.

“I played every one of our matches in France, carried the ‘world’s most expensive player’ tag, and arrived in Seville in the best shape of my life. The only downside was not winning that World Cup, but even then I was living the high point of my career.

“Moving to Betis was the moment that I became a man and a real professional footballer. I didn’t know much about Seville. I’d been told I’d cope with the language, the winters weren’t too harsh and the food would be fine.

Denilson admits things changed for him after the 1998 World Cup final

“My parents came with me, so things were good off the pitch. But on it, I struggled. I wasn’t playing well and football stopped being fun.”

“I lost some of the irreverence that I carried. Instead came sadness, anger, pressure. I thought adapting to Spanish football would be easy, given my four brilliant years in Brazil. However, the expectations on me were enormous and the press questioned how anyone could pay such a fee for me. I grew up quickly through those tough times.

“My first two seasons were awful and we got relegated from La Liga. During the 2000-01 season, I split the year between a loan spell at Flamengo and Betis in the second division.”

One of the most electrifying players in US womenâ€s soccer has called it a career.

Christen Press, who starred for the US womenâ€s national team over 155 appearances from 2013 to 2021, announced on Wednesday that she would be retiring as a player at the conclusion of the 2025 NWSL season with Angel City FC.

Press, 36, shared the news in an interview on ABC morning show Good Morning America.

“I feel a mix of everything,†she said. “Thereâ€s relief, thereâ€s joy, thereâ€s excitement, thereâ€s fear, thereâ€s so much grief. I have so much grief, a part of me, a piece of me, Iâ€m losing her.â€

Like most womenâ€s soccer players of her generation, Press enjoyed a meandering professional club career that started in Florida with MagicJack in Womenâ€s Professional Soccer (WPS). When that league folded, Press moved to Sweden with Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC and Tyresö before returning stateside in the newly launched NWSL with the Utah Royals and Chicago Red Stars. She made 14 appearances for Manchester United in the 2020-21 WSL season, but returned to her home town of Los Angeles for the launch of Angel City in 2022.

Press will be remembered most for her national team career, which saw her play a key role in the United States†triumphs in the 2015 and 2019 Womenâ€s World Cups. Whether as a starter or an effective substitute, Press†speed, finishing, and ability with the ball at her feet was a key component of those teams. In total, Press scored 64 goals for the US national team – one more than teammate Megan Rapinoe and good for ninth on the all-time scoring charts for the US.

Pressâ€s later playing career was unfortunately marked by a extended injury struggles and a sudden absence from the USWNT picture. Shortly before making that move to LA, Press took a break from the US national team for mental health reasons, and then-head coach Vlatko Andonovski left her off his US rosters after she said she was available to return in 2022.

Press tore her ACL in June of 2022 – an injury that ended up requiring multiple surgeries to fully repair. In total, the injury kept Press out of action until the 2024 season and effectively ended her national team career, though her comeback with Angel City has been hailed as inspiring by many across the world of womenâ€s soccer.

Press has already gotten a head start on several off the field ventures. Along with her wife and former teammate Tobin Heath, Press hosts the popular Re–Cap podcast, which is part of a broader Re– brand overseen by Press. Press and Heathâ€s relationship was kept publicly under wraps for years before the pair officially announced that they were married earlier this year. Heath, Press†teammate with the US, retired earlier in 2025.

“She would absolutely hate me saying this, but a lot,†she said of whether Heathâ€s decision contributed to her own retirement. “I think it is time for my family to move on to our next chapter, weâ€re going to be a part of this game forever, but itâ€s time for it to look different for us.â€

Zhou Qihao and Yukiya Uda had wins over higher seeds, but most of the Day 3 China Smash action favored the higher seeds in Beijing.   The top two seeds in action today each won 3-1, with Lin Shidong topping Shunsuke Togami and Hugo Calderano defeating Simon Gauzy.  Zhou Qihao had a 3-0 win over Anders Lind, with a pair of tight 11-9 wins to start off on the right track.  Xiang Peng has won both of his matches 3-0 thus far, and because two of the higher seeds in his section of the draw are already out, he will have a decided ranking advantage over France’s Flavien Cotton in the next round.

Truls Moregard dropped the first game before roaring back for a 3-1 win over Omar Assar.  Moregard will face Yukiya Uda who upset Lin Yun-Ju 3-2.  Kristian Karlsson defeated Yuan Licen 3-0 to advance to face Lin Shidong.  Shidong defeated Shunsuke Togame 3-1.  More Men’s action in this round is scheduled for Wednesday.

Women’s Singles on Day 3 was largely a series of wins by the higher seeded player.  One of two exceptions for the day was Wang Xiaotong who defeated Hana Goda of Egypt – a loss to a higher ranked player, but a win by a strong Chinese player quickly moving up the rankings.  Xiaotong will face Sun Yingsha in the Round of 16.  Wang Yidi will face Honoka Hashimoto – each logging dominant 3-0 wins today.  Chen Xingtong defeated Xiaona Shan of German and she moves on to face Li Yu-Jhun.  Yu-Jhun is the other exception, the Taipei player upset Bernadette Szocs 3-0.  Chen Yi needed all five games to advance past Qian Tianyi.  And Zhu Yuling logged her second 3-0 win in a row in taking out Bruna Takahashi.  Like the Men, the second half of this round is scheduled for Wednesday.

One early round doubles note – China’s Wang Yidi teamed with USA’s Lily Zhang and the pair won their opening round match 3-0 over Andrea Dragoman and Charlotte Lutz (of Romania and France).  The US/China team moves on to face the Chinese pair of Qian Tianyi and Chen Xingtong.

The 76ers guard posed in the Allen Iverson-era uniform while sitting on a bench. The notable detail? The bar was loaded with 2.5-pound plates. It prompted a question from a user on X: “why is jared mccain bench pressing 2.5lb plates?”

The post quickly went viral with McCain addressing the comments on his Instagram story on Wednesday. First, he wrote “Working on it” with two sad emojis, before posting a video of him curling an 8-pound dumbbell.

McCain — who boasts 4.4 million followers on TikTok — is known for his lighthearted posts on social media. Last year, he posted a video in the 76ers locker room with teammate Kyle Lowry that eclipsed seven million views.

The 21-year-old is coming off a rookie campaign where he averaged 15.3 points, 2.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 23 games, which earned him a spot in the Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star weekend.

His season came to a premature end due to a lateral meniscus tear on his left knee that required surgery in December. The 76ers ruled him out for the season a month later.
