Asia Cup Final Post-Match Presser Controversy Explained:On social media, the Indian team players posted photos with an animated trophy or a large emoji of a trophy following their Asia Cup 2025 final victory.
Late in the night in Dubai, with the time going well past 01:00 AM in India, Suryakumar Yadav and his team, including the coaches, lifted an imaginary trophy!
Team India won the Asia Cup 2025, remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament and beating Pakistan in an epic last-over thriller. However, while the Men In Blue became the nine-time Asia Cup champions, India didnâ€t get the trophy; they were rather not given the trophy; or, they outright refused to get the trophy!
The entire Asia Cup 2025 has been marred with controversy and strong words and even threats of boycott. While the tournament did conclude without any boycott from any team, it will be remembered for the controversies with the Indian and Pakistani teams, with the nail-biting India vs Pakistan final even getting overshadowed.
In the final, Tilak Varma played a knock for the ages to secure the Asia Cup trophy for India; however, Team India didnâ€t collect their award medals and trophy.
Asia Cup Final Post-Match Presser Controversy Explained: What Exactly Happened After India vs Pakistan Final, And Who Said What
After the India vs Pakistan final concluded, it took more than 90 minutes for the post-match presentation ceremony to begin; generally, the ceremony begins in about 20-30 minutes even after a final of a tournament.
The podium, along with the trophy on it, was set up in time, and even the dignitaries, including Mohsin Naqvi, who is the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman, and also Pakistanâ€s Interior Minister, stood on the podium for more than 20 minutes.
The post-match presentation ceremony was delayed because the Indian team, upon learning that they would be handed the trophy by Naqvi, refused to take the trophy from Naqvi.
This caused plenty of conversations behind the scenes between a lot of people: Indian team manager, the ACC officials, the Emirates Cricket Board officials, and even the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Aminul Islam, entered the talks. Naqvi was seen talking on his phone as well by on-ground journalists and media.
The Indian team stood on their grounds of not accepting the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, while the PCB chairman, who is also part of the Pakistani government, remained adamant on fulfilling his duty as the ACC president.
According to Cricbuzz, Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni and Aminul Islam of the BCB offered to hand the trophy to Suryakumar and Team India, which India agreed to. However, Naqvi didnâ€t budge.
A while later, the Asia Cup trophy was taken away from the podium. The Pakistani players came out and received their runners-up medals.
For India, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, and Abhishek Sharma received their individual awards from officials other than Naqvi. The Indian team didnâ€t get their deserved trophy, and it was reported that Naqvi was seen leaving the stadium with the Asia Cup trophy.
BCCI to file “very serious and very strong protest†against Naqvi to the ICC: BCCI secretary
The BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that India had refused to receive the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi.
Saikia told ANI, “We have decided not to take the Asia Cup trophy from the ACC chairman, who happens to be one of the main [political] leaders of Pakistan. So we decided not to take it from him. But that does not mean that the gentleman will take away the trophy with him along with the medals. So it is very unfortunate and we hope that the trophy and the medals will be returned to India as soon as possible.â€
The BCCI secretary added, “There is an ICC conference in November in Dubai. In the next conference, we are going to launch a very serious and very strong protest against the act of the ACC chairperson.â€
After the post-match presentation ceremony was completed, the Indian team decided to have fun of their own. Suryakumar mimed bringing an imaginary trophy to the team, and everyone celebrated as if they would have with the original trophy.
The social media posts of the Indian players were funny, with the players pasting the emoji of the trophy on their hands.
In the post-match press conference, Pakistan captain Salman Agha said that Indiaâ€s behavior was “disappointing†and that they have been “disrespecting cricket†in this Asia Cup.
India skipper Suryakumar said, “I think this is one thing which I have never seen since I started playing cricket, started following cricket, that a champion team is denied a trophy, that too a hard-earned one. I feel we deserved it.â€
