This is the latest episode in a string of local media coverage of the England team on their tour of Australia.

Players were filmed on their arrival at Perth airport, with particular attention on Stokes and batter Joe Root.

The visitors have had drones follow them when playing golf and some players were pictured visiting an aquarium in Perth.

In the aftermath of a heavy defeat in the first Test, their performance and attitude came under heavy scrutiny. Former Australia pace bowler Mitchell Johnson said the England team are “arrogant”.

England are 1-0 down in the series and are planning a holiday in Noosa – north of Brisbane on the Sunshine Coast – following the second Test, regardless of the result.

Pope said England are “very aware” of the media attention but that they should be able to spend time away from cricket.

“For us as cricketers and as people it’s important to try and be able to switch off and be yourself,” said the Surrey batter.

Pope, 27, is on his second Ashes tour and highlighted the difference to his previous trip to Australia four years ago, when the England squad were subject to tough Covid restrictions.

“Locking your doors and not coming out of your room is the unhealthy thing to do, as we saw in Covid times,” said Pope.

“Whatever you’re doing in your off time, whether it’s just taking your mind away from cricket for a day or two, that’s really important.

“If they want to catch us doing that, then so be it. It is important to have that balance on a long tour like this.”

Australia fast bowler Scott Boland agreed with Pope on the need for players to have time away from cricket.

As the team hosting the series, Australia’s players have the benefit of returning to their homes between Tests.

“You want to enjoy your free time,” said Boland. “We can go home, see our families and stuff like that.

“You do like your privacy – I’m the same. I’m a pretty private person. I like being able to go home when I can and not have camera in my face all the time.”

England have confirmed their team for the second Test, with all-rounder Will Jacks taking the place of the injured Wood.

Australia opener Usman Khawaja has been ruled out with a back injury, meaning Travis Head, who scored a match-winning century in the opening Test, will continue at the top of the order and Josh Inglis or Beau Webster will come into the team.

Pope’s status has never truly been in doubt.

The veteran started the season as first-choice – just as he did in each of his previous three campaigns at Newcastle.

But Howe recognised the need to bring in fresh competition, even before goalkeeper Martin Dubravka’s departure to Burnley was sanctioned last summer.

James Trafford had been a longstanding target, but the 23-year-old decided to rejoin former club Manchester City from Burnley instead.

And Pope previously admitted that Newcastle’s very public search for a permanent goalkeeper – and the subsequent arrival of Ramsdale on loan from Southampton – drove him on to “push himself to the absolute maximum to earn the right to play for the club”.

Pope certainly earned that right after starting the campaign strongly.

Such was Pope’s form, the 33-year-old was recalled to the England squad for the first time in a year earlier this month – only to have to withdraw after suffering a concussion during a match against Brentford.

It was a deserved call-up.

Pope kept eight clean sheets in his opening 14 games in all competitions, and his superb 65-yard throw went viral after he set up Harvey Barnes’ breakaway goal against Benfica.

But Newcastle have struggled defensively on the road in recent weeks.

Though he has not always been offered much protection by those around him, Pope has let in 10 goals in his past four away games and made different types of errors against Marseille, Brentford and West Ham when his side were in front.

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta’s shot squirmed past him at the London Stadium.

Pope was caught out at the Gtech Community Stadium a week later when he attempted to punch the ball only for Kevin Schade to equalise from Brentford defender Michael Kayode’s long throw.

And then there was his rush of blood to the head in Marseille.

Ollie Pope said he respects England’s decision to replace him with Harry Brook as vice-captain for the Ashes series.

Pope has been deputy for most of Ben Stokes’ three years as Test skipper, stepping up to lead on five occasions – including England’s last Test against India in July.

But the Surrey batter was demoted when the squad for the tour of Australia was named in September.

Director of cricket Rob Key explained the move by saying Brook, who became England’s limited-overs captain in the summer, is a “better leader”.

Pope said: “If they think that’s the right thing for the team going forward, and obviously Brooky captaining the one-day stuff and the T20 stuff as well, that’s absolutely fine by me and I respect the decision they’ve made.”

The 27-year-old was speaking after making scores of 100 and 90 against England Lions in England’s only Ashes warm-up match in Perth.

It was Pope’s first time in the middle since playing in the County Championship two months ago.

He had a mixed summer for England, scoring hundreds in his first two innings – against Zimbabwe and India – then passing 50 only once in his next eight.

Pope said he has “worked” on “a couple of little technical bits” of his game, without revealing the full extent.

“Just smoothing out a few areas,” he said.

With debate focusing on the quality and quantity of England’s Ashes warm-up fixtures, Pope was one of the players who took full advantage of the three days at Lilac Hill.

“I always take a bit away from warm-up games. Even if I miss out, there’s always something to take from it,” he said.

“I’m someone who likes time in the middle just to get myself ready for a series. I found it really beneficial.”

Lilac Hill has a placid surface, far removed from what England can expect to face at Optus Stadium next week.

The value of these preparations will only be revealed in time, but time in the middle is never a bad thing and Pope led the list of England batters who grasped the opportunity.

Duckett should have been caught at first slip by Ben McKinney on six off the impressive Potts. Reprieved, Duckett and opening partner Crawley rattled along at more than six runs an over in the morning session.

Following the slump at the beginning of the afternoon session, Pope and Stokes respected the chance for match practice.

Any suggestion Pope may have been under pressure from Jacob Bethell was ended by Bethell making only two for the Lions on Thursday. A criticism of Pope is that he is often too skittish in Test cricket, but this innings was a calm one – albeit in gentle surroundings.

Stokes has regularly skipped warm-up matches in the past, though he needed this run-out following his spell on the sidelines. He was watchful for his half-century, taking 92 deliveries to reach 50, then opened his shoulders before being dismissed by Shoaib Bashir.

One other positive for England was the performance of Potts, who is in the Ashes squad despite playing this game for the Lions.

Realistically, Potts is bottom of the pecking order in England’s six Ashes seamers, though his chances of playing a Test have increased with the doubt over Wood.

He was comfortably the best of the seamers on display and bowled better than figures of 3-66 suggest.

Marcus Trescothick has hinted Ollie Pope will remain as England’s first-choice number three for the Ashes, saying the tourists are “very consistent” in their selection.

England meet England Lions in their only Ashes warm-up match in Perth from Thursday and are likely to field something close to the XI that will line up in the first Test on 21 November.

Pope has been under pressure for his number three spot from Jacob Bethell for the past year.

When asked who will fill the role in the tour match, England assistant coach Trescothick told BBC Sport: “I’m presuming the same sort of number three we’ve had for a period of time.”

He added: “I can only say we are a very consistent team in what we’re trying to do.”

Pope averages 41.60 batting at number three for England, although has a habit of fading as series progress. In the home summer he made a century in his first innings of the series against India, then passed 50 only once in his next eight.

When England announced their Ashes squad, Pope was replaced as vice-captain by Harry Brook, appearing to make the Surrey man more vulnerable to being left out of the team.

At the time, director of cricket Rob Key said Pope was the “man in possession” of the number-three spot.

Bethell, 22, is an outstanding prospect and made his first professional century in a one-day international against South Africa in September.

The left-hander was part of England’s white-ball tour of New Zealand last month so had the chance to press his Ashes case, but could only manage a highest score of 24 in five innings.

Bethell is still likely to be part of the tour game. Any players from the Ashes squad not in the England XI for the three-day game will join the Lions XI.

With playing only one practice match before the first Test, England want to ramp up the intensity during the game at Lilac Hill. Captain Ben Stokes, who often skips warm-up matches, is set to play his first cricket since July after recovering from a shoulder injury.

Despite that, former England opener Trescothick said performances in the warm-up would probably not alter plans for the first Test against Australia at Optus Stadium.

“I guess everyone has an opportunity to stake their claim,” he said. “As I mentioned, how consistent we’ve been with our team selection, it’s been very level.

“Bar the odd injury we’ve not really chopped and changed a great deal. It’s definitely not going to change dramatically before the start of an Ashes series because someone puts their hand up by taking five wickets or gets 150.

“The team has been what it has been for a period of time for a reason, so that when you come to big series you are more settled and confident going into it.”

As Pope Leo XIV appeared in a parade Wednesday atop the Popemobile, one attendee bravely yelled “Go Cubs!” at the Chicago native and lifelong White Sox fan. Leo responded by pointing at the man and yelling back in both Spanish and English. The message was the same in both languages:

This is the stuff you can only get when an American is sitting on the papal throne.

The Cubs indeed lost, with their season ending last weekend in a five-game NLDS against the top-seeded Milwaukee Brewers. The North Siders nearly pulled off an incredible comeback, erasing a 2-0 series deficit with back-to-back wins at Wrigley Field, but Milwaukee found its footing with a dominant bullpen game in Game 5.

Leo, previously known as Robert Francis Prevost, grew up a White Sox fan despite his mother being a Cubs fan and his father rooting for the Cardinals, per his brother. Before reaching the Vatican, he could be seen rooting for his team during its 2005 World Series championship run.

Since ascending to the papacy in a surprise election, Leo has not been shy about his fandom. He has worn a White Sox hat during his general audience and showed Wednesday he’s not afraid to return fire with trolls from rival fanbases.
