India cruised to a commanding seven-wicket win over Pakistan in their Asia Cup clash (AFP Photo) TimesofIndia.com in Dubai: Amidst the tension surrounding the ‘handshake drama†that unfolded on Sunday night at the Dubai International Stadium, it is highly unlikely that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will withdraw from the ongoing Asia Cup, TimesofIndia.com has learnt.”It is very unlikely that the PCB will pull out from the Asia Cup,” a PCB source told TimesofIndia.com.”If we do that, ICC led by Jay Shah will put heavy sanctions on the PCB, and this is something our board cannot afford. The financial situation post the Champions Trophy, where all the stadiums were renovated, is not good,” the source added.
Handshake drama becomes ugly! India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 in DANGER?
This comes a day after PCB president and current Asian Cricket Council head Mohsin Naqvi had posted on social media: “There is nothing more important to me than the honour and prestige of my country.â€PCB had also lodged a complaint against match referee Andrew Pycroft to the ICC, who had asked Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha and Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav to skip the customary handshake at the toss.“It is alarming to note that an ICC-appointed and supposedly neutral match referee opted to indulge in conduct which clearly violates the Spirit of Cricket and MCC Laws,” read the PCB letter.“The match referee failed to discharge his responsibility: to ensure that respect was extended and maintained amongst the captains as well as between the two competing sides; and to create a positive atmosphere by his conduct and encourage the captains and participating teams to do likewise.
If we do that, ICC led by Jay Shah will put heavy sanctions on the PCB, and this is something our board cannot afford
PCB source on Pakistan’s threat to withdraw from Asia Cup
“In fact, the match refereeâ€s instructions to the two team captains were entirely directed towards achieving the opposite result. This misconduct violates Article 2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Match Officials, which specifically makes it an offence for the match referee to conduct himself in a manner that is contrary to the spirit of the game and violates the MCC Laws.“Given the gravity, political nature/background, and far-reaching consequences and repercussions, the misconduct has also caused disrepute to the game.”We believe the highest level of offence has been committed.â€TimesofIndia.com can confirm that the ICC has rejected PCB’s plea.India and Pakistan are scheduled to train at the ICC Academy on Tuesday. While the time slots are different, the two teams will be at the same venue in preparation for their respective next matches. India’s training is from 6 pm to 9 pm (local time), while Pakistan will train from 8 pm to 11 pm (local time).India have already qualified for the Super 4s following UAE’s win over Oman on Monday. Meanwhile, Pakistan will play hosts the UAE on Wednesday in a must-win encounter. If they manage to beat UAE, Pakistan will again lock horns with India on Sunday.
Pakistan currently sit second in Group A standings in the 2025 Asia Cup. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has threatened to withdraw from their upcoming Asia Cup 2025 Group A match against the United Arab Emirates if the International Cricket Council (ICC) does not remove match referee Andy Pycroft from the tournament. This development follows a controversy where the Indian cricket team refused to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts after their match on Sunday. And as TimesofIndia.com reported on Monday, ICC are unlikely to pay heed to PCB’s threats and have all but made their stance on the situation clear.
Suryakumar Yadav statement on Pahalgam to handshake drama: How India HUMILIATED Pakistan
The incident occurred during the post-match proceedings when India captain Suryakumar Yadav and his team declined the customary handshake with their Pakistani opponents. The Indian team also closed their dressing room door, preventing the traditional exchange of greetings.Pakistan’s captain Salman Agha and coach Mike Hesson expressed their displeasure with the Indian team’s actions. Agha subsequently boycotted the post-match presentation, choosing not to interact with former Indian cricket player Sanjay Manjrekar.Asia CupSuper 4s qualification scenarios

The PCB’s threat to withdraw from their match against the UAE carries significant consequences. If Pakistan follows through with their boycott, they would be automatically eliminated from the Asia Cup tournament.A boycott would result in Pakistan being stranded with only two points from their single victory against Oman. This would be insufficient for qualification to the Super 4s stage, as both India and the UAE would then accumulate more points.India, however, have already qualified for the next stage of the competition, after UAE beat Oman by 42 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.India lead the Group A standings with four points from two matches with Pakistan second on two points. UAE joined them on two points after Monday’s fixture but have a far inferior net run rate. However, if Pakistan boycott their match, the UAE would receive a walkover, increasing their points to four. Oman, meanwhile, have been eliminated from the competition. This scenario would ensure both India and the UAE’s progression to the Super 4s stage. India have already secured four points from their victories against the UAE and Pakistan. If Pakistan do continue with their match against the UAE, it would become a decisive contest where the winner advances to the next round. The match’s outcome would determine which team joins India in the Super 4s stage. The situation now depends on the ICC’s response to Pakistan’s demand regarding match referee Andy Pycroft, who is currently scheduled to officiate Pakistan’s match against the UAE.
The focus of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has seamlessly shifted from their defeat to India in the IND vs PAK encounter last Sunday in Dubai to the handshake row that has led to the PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the ACC president, asking for the removal of match referee Andy Pycroft from the rest of the Asia Cup.
However, some inquisition within themselves will reveal that Greens were simply outplayed in both departments by a dominant Indian team led by Suryakumar Yadav that has pushed Salman Aghaâ€s side on the brink of an embarrassing group-stage exit.
Pakistan, under new head coach Mike Hesson, decided to move on from the trudging duo of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan and added youngsters and intent merchants in their side and also chose batting depth, which resulted in the exclusion of senior pacers Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali from the playing XI.
Despite all this, the Men In Green managed only 127 runs, boosted by Shaheen Afridiâ€s 33*, against India and lost by seven wickets with more than four overs to spare in Indiaâ€s run chase.
Pakistanâ€s net run rate is still healthy, courtesy of their 93-run win over Oman last Friday. But that NRR wouldnâ€t help them if they fail to secure a win against the UAE.
Asia Cup: How Can Pakistan Qualify For Super 4 Round Despite Defeat Against India?
PAK and UAE both have two points each after two games. They will meet on Wednesday in Dubai, and the winner of the Pakistan vs UAE match will progress to the Super 4 round, joining India, while the losing side will be knocked out of the competition.
From Group A, India have qualified for Super 4, with two wins in as many games, whereas Oman are the first team to be out of the Super 4 race, having lost both their games so far.
There are reports that have suggested that the PCB has threatened to boycott their game against the UAE if Andy Pycroft is not removed from the PAK vs UAE match as the match referee. In the case of Pakistan boycotting their match against the UAE, the UAE will receive two points and will go through to the Super 4 round, while Aghaâ€s side will be knocked out.
Last year, Pakistan suffered a humiliating group-stage exit at the ICC T20 World Cup following their defeats to India and the USA, which was a shocking one.
Will there be another upset in the Pakistan vs UAE match?
