On September 24, the Pakistan vs Sri Lanka Asia Cup 2025 Super match took place at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. This match was very crucial for both teams, as both had lost their first Super Four match. Team Pakistan won the toss and decided to bowl first. Pakistani bowlers completely destroyed the Sri Lankan batting line-up, but Kamindu Mendis was the only one who scored runs for the team. He scored a half-century, and with the help of Mendisâ€s 50 runs in 44 balls, Team Sri Lanka was able to score 133 for 8 wickets in 20 overs.
Team Sri Lanka went into this match with two changes; they included Maheesh Theekshana and Chamika Karunaratne in their playing 11. Pakistani batting line-up played brilliantly in the power play, but lost both their openers in the last over of the power play. The Pakistani Team was able to chase the target easily in just 18 overs. With this victory, Team Pakistan has kept their hopes alive in the Asia Cup 2025 finals. The man of the match award was given to Hussain Talat for taking 2 wickets by giving just 18 runs, and scoring 32 runs in 30 balls.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka: Pakistan has defeated Sri Lanka in their Super Fours encounter to take a massive step towards a place in the final and a third match against India in the Asia Cup 2025.
Tonightâ€s Pakistan vs Sri Lanka game was Match 15 of the ACC Asia Cup 2025. This was also both of these teams†second match of the Super Fours round. The game was played in the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, as Pakistan won the toss and decided to bowl first.
Pakistan vs Sri Lanka: Pakistan Thrashes Sri Lanka In Super Fours
The Lankan Lions failed to establish a strong start to their inning. Opener Kamindu Mendis was dismissed on the second ball of the first over for a duck by Shaheen Afridi. The other opener, Pathum Nissanka, became Afridiâ€s second wicket of the day in the third over.
And then, in the last over of the powerplay, even Kusal Perera got out. So while Sri Lanka made a healthy 53 runs in the first six overs, they also lost three wickets.
Regular wickets never stopped falling. Captain Charith Asalanka was out after scoring 20 off 19, and Dasun Shanaka was dismissed on the very next ball for a golden duck to bring the score down to 58/5 in eight overs.
However, while wickets still kept falling, Kamindu Mendis took charge of stabilising the innings from this point. So while Wanindu Hasaranga made 15 off 13, and Chamika Karunaratne made 17 off 21, Mendis stood firm at one end. He scored a half-century and took his team past the 100-run mark.
By the time Kamindu Mendis got out in the 19th over at the hands of Shaheen Afridi, he had scored 50 off 44 and taken Sri Lanka to 123/7. The innings ended at a below-par yet respectable score of 133/8 in 20 overs.
Shaheen Afridi was by far the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan, bowling a four-over spell of 3/28 and taking three massive wickets.
The Pakistan innings, in contrast to that of the Lankan Lions, got off to a brilliant start. The opening pair of Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman scored 43 runs without losing any wickets in the first five overs.
But in the final over of the powerplay, both openers would depart. While Farhan played a solid inning of 24 off 15, Zaman played the supporting role, scoring 17 off 19.
Over the next three overs, Sain Ayub and captain Salman Ali Agha would be out for cheap, with Ayub making two and Agha scoring five. At 57/4 in the fifth over, the Men in Green looked in serious trouble. However, at this point, all-rounder Hussain Talat took charge of buckling down, throwing down the anchor, and taking the match home.
First with Mohammad Haris (13 off 11), and then with Mohammad Nawaz (30* off 24), Talat built slow and safe partnerships to ensure that Pakistan chased the small target down with ease. Having scored 23 off 30, Hussain Talat, along with Mohammad Nawaz, took Pakistan to the target in 18 overs, winning the match for their team by five wickets and with 12 balls to spare.
With a win in this Pakistan vs Sri Lanka game, the Pakistan Cricket Team has taken a step towards a place in the final. After a defeat against India in their first Super Fours game, a win here means that another win against Bangladesh would ensure a place in the final for them, which will most likely be a third India vs Pakistan confrontation in the Asia Cup 2025.
On the other hand, this is Sri Lankaâ€s second loss in the Super Fours. They are all but out of the race for the final. Their miniscule hopes will only stay alive if they are to beat the mighty India in their last game of this round.

Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets in a high-stakes Super 4 clash at the Asia Cup on Tuesday, keeping their tournament hopes alive. (ACC Photo) NEW DELHI: Pakistan survived a fiery spell from Wanindu Hasaranga to edge past Sri Lanka by five wickets in a high-stakes Super 4 clash at the Asia Cup on Tuesday, keeping their tournament hopes alive. Chasing a modest 134, Pakistan stumbled at times but ultimately finished at 138 for five. The conditions were tricky for batting, yet Pakistanâ€s openers attacked from the outset. Sahibzada Farhan (24) compensated for a slow start from Fakhar Zaman (17 off 19 balls), launching some aggressive shots, including a 6, 6, 4 sequence off pacer Nuwan Thushara.Maheesh Theekshana (2/24) struck in the sixth over, dismissing Farhan and soon after Zaman, who had earlier been struck on the helmet by Dushmantha Chameera. Hasaranga (2/27) then took charge, claiming Saim Ayub and skipper Salman Agha, including a stunning ground-level catch at mid-off. His delivery that pinned back Ayubâ€s stump was a perfect example of subtle seam movement. In both dismissals, Hasaranga mimicked Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmedâ€s hands-on-chest celebration, in retaliation for earlier banter. At 80 for five, the match was delicately poised, with Pakistan still needing 54 runs. Hussain Talat (32*, 30 balls) and Mohammad Nawaz (38*, 24 balls) calmly guided the chase, sealing a tense victory with two overs to spare.Earlier, Pakistanâ€s pacers had troubled the Sri Lankan lineup despite Kamindu Mendis†elegant 50, restricting them to 133 for eight. Sri Lanka suffered an early collapse, losing in-form Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka cheaply. Shaheen Shah Afridi (3/28) struck first, trapping Mendis and then Nissanka, with Talat and wicketkeeper Haris completing the dismissals.Skipper Charith Asalanka and Kusal Perera attempted a mini-recovery with a 25-run partnership, but Perera was soon caught off Faheem Ashrafâ€s well-judged diving effort. In the eighth over, Talat and Rauf removed Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka in successive deliveries, leaving Sri Lanka reeling at 58 for five.Mendis†determined fifty and a 43-run partnership with Chamika Karunaratne pushed Sri Lanka past 100, but it wasnâ€t enough to challenge Pakistan, who held their nerve under pressure to secure a crucial win.
Pakistan boosted their hopes of reaching the Asia Cup final by edging to a five-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi.
After their disappointing and controversial defeats by rivals India, Pakistan slipped to 80-5 in pursuit of 134 before a partnership of 58 between Hussain Talat and Mohammad Nawaz rescued them.
Needing 46 from 40 balls, Nawaz hit Wanindu Hasaranga, who had 2-5 after his first two overs, for back-to-back boundaries and when the leg-spinner returned to bowl the 17th over Talat struck another two fours.
That swung the equation from 26 runs needed from 24 balls, to 14 from 18, and left-hander Nawaz added three more sixes to seal victory with two overs to spare.
Nawaz finished 38 not out, with Talat unbeaten on 32.
While Pakistan would not have been eliminated with defeat, they would have needed a series of other results to go their way – the situation now facing Sri Lanka.
They had earlier done well to restrict Sri Lanka to 133-8, with left-armer Shaheen Afridi taking 3-28.
Sri Lanka took 53 runs from the powerplay but lost three wickets in doing so and were 58-5 when Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka fell in consecutive deliveries in the eighth over.
Kamindu Mendis led a recovery with 50 but he was pinned in front in the penultimate over by Shaheen – who had earlier dismissed Kusal Mendis with the second ball of the match – denying Sri Lanka a big finish.
India and Bangladesh, who both won their opening Super Four games, meet in Dubai on Wednesday.
The top two teams in the Super Four will contest Sunday’s final.
Due to international bans, political infighting, corruption and plenty more besides, there has been genuine equality in Pakistan for much of the past decade. Neither the male or female national teams have played much. Indeed, from 2014 to 2022 the women had no fixtures at all. However, the female Green Shirts are making up for lost time, helped by a bunch of British-born players.
An 8-0 defeat would not usually be the start of something special but that is what happened in qualification for the 2026 Asian Cup in June and July. That thrashing came against Chinese Taipei, who are ranked 42 in the world, 119 places above Pakistan. Next up were Indonesia, then ranked 95 and the tournament hosts, and Pakistan won 2-0. Qualifying ended with a 2-1 victory against Kyrgyzstan, then ranked 136 in the word, and a second-place finish. In the end only the top team from the group qualified, but for Pakistan that represented a huge step forward for a new-look side.
The long lack of domestic action robbed Pakistan of a generation of players, hence the need for and importance of British-born players, one of whom is Layla Banaras. “I was contacted when I was 13 or 14, but I felt I was too young to play for the national team,†said the 19-year-old Birmingham native, who plays for Lewes in Englandâ€s third tier. “They contacted me again this year as they had the Asian Cup qualifiers coming up. I thought: ‘Why not? This is perfect timing.â€â€ Banarasâ€s parents agreed. “My dad is Pakistan heritage and my mum is white British and she was over the moon. My dad loves the cricket team and everything about Pakistan, and he thinks it is amazing.â€
Banarasâ€s first training camp also represented her first visit to Pakistan. “It helped to go with other girls,†she adds. “I travelled with Maz and we got quite close.†Maz is the Wrexham forward Mariam Mahmood. She also turned down earlier approaches from Pakistan before deciding in the summer that the time was right. “I was going with girls who had never been before so we didnâ€t know what to expect but we were all excited about the challenge,†said the 21-year-old.

“Sticking 24 people in a room with a language barrier is sometimes not easy at first but as the camp went on and we trained together, there was no divide and we integrated,†Mahmood says. “I made friends for life over there. I really enjoyed it. Everything was good, the food, the training, the kit – everything.â€
Bonds were quickly made off the pitch but, on it, they took a little more time. “I didnâ€t go in with any expectations,†Mahmood says. “The first game was a learning curve, but we went into the game with Indonesia with a lot of fight, we got a good start early on and then it was all about sticking together as a team. We then had the confidence against Kyrgyzstan.â€
“Football brings people together,†adds Banaras. “More games will only make us better. We have gone up in the world rankings [to 154] and we can keep going better. We had a camp in Pakistan for a week so we didnâ€t have much time, so to do what we did was amazing.â€
The next step is more games, more training, more investment, more everything. “The PFF [Pakistan Football Federation] have appointed a new president, we met him and he told us his plans and that is to create a league in Pakistan for both men and women,†Mahmood said. “I hope we have the funding to have more camps and friendlies and to keep playing footballâ€.

Wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock has reversed his retirement for one-day internationals and been recalled by South Africa for their ODIs and T20s against Pakistan starting next month.
De Kock, 32, retired from 50-over internationals after the 2023 World Cup in India and has not played for the Proteas in any format since the final of the T20 World Cup in June 2024.
Though he did not officially retire from T20s, De Kock, who called time on his Test career in 2021, was not given a central contract last year.
The decision comes before next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, and the 50-over World Cup, for which South Africa are co-hosts, in 2027.
It is also a boost to South Africa, and international cricket more widely, amid the power of franchise leagues.
Proteas batter Heinrich Klaasen, one of the world’s leading T20 batters, retired from international cricket in June.
“Quinton’s return to the white-ball space is a major boost for us,” South Africa coach Shukri Conrad said.
“When we spoke last month about his future, it was clear that he still has a strong ambition to represent his country.
“Everyone knows the quality he brings to the side, and having him back can only benefit the team.”
De Kock’s only cricket this year has been in T20 leagues – the SA20 in South Africa at the start of the year, followed by the Indian Premier League, Major League Cricket and the Caribbean Premier League.
At his best, he has been one of the best white-ball batters of the past decade with only Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma scoring more ODI centuries than De Kock’s 21 since his debut in January 2013.
He was also South Africa’s leading run-scorer at last year’s T20 World Cup.
South Africa play two Tests, three ODIs and three T20s in Pakistan, starting on 12 October.
Injured captain Temba Bavuma will miss the Tests – their first since winning the World Test Championship in June – meaning Aiden Markram will lead in his place.
Donovan Ferreira will be captain for a one-off T20 against Namibia that follows the tour.
South Africa squad for Pakistan Tests: Aiden Markram (capt), David Bedingham, Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Zubayr Hamza, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj (second Test only), Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Prenelan Subrayen, Kyle Verreynne
South Africa’s squad for Pakistan T20s: David Miller (capt), Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Donovan Ferreira, Reeza Hendricks, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka, Lungi Ngidi, Nqaba Peter, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Andile Simelane, Lizaad Williams
South Africa’s squad for Pakistan ODIs: Matthew Breetzke (capt), Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Tony de Zorzi, Donovan Ferreira, Bjorn Fortuin, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka, Lungi Ngidi, Nqaba Peter, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Sinethemba Qeshile
South Africa’s squad for Namibia T20: Donovan Ferreira (capt), Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, Rubin Hermann, Kwena Maphaka, Rivaldo Moonsamy, Nqaba Peter, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Andile Simelane, Jason Smith, Lizaad Williams
The Pakistan team suffered another abject defeat against the Indian cricket team as the two teams commenced their Super 4 round of the Asia Cup on a contrasting note.
Another blockbuster Sunday brought another IND vs PAK match and another victory for India. While Pakistan put on a better batting performance this time than they had done last Sunday against the same opposition in their group clash, India were once again too good for the Men In Green.
Asked to bat first, Pakistan raced to 91/1 in 10 overs, with Jasprit Bumrah having an off day and the Indian fielders giving multiple reprieves. However, India regrouped at the mid-innings break and applied the brakes on Pakistanâ€s run-scoring from then on, conceding only 80 runs in the last 10 overs.
Any hopes of a Pakistani win were dashed quickly by Abhishek Sharmaâ€s ballistic knock. The young India left-handed opener hammered 74 runs off 39 balls and forged a century opening partnership inside nine overs with Shubman Gill, who silenced his doubters with a classy yet aggressive knock of 47 runs off 28 deliveries.
Tilak Varma played a terrific hand as well, whacking 30* off 19 balls to seal the victory for India with six wickets in hand and seven balls to spare.
This was the second game of the Super 4 round. On Saturday, Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets.
How Can Pakistan Team Reach Asia Cup Final After Defeat Against India?
Yes, despite a defeat against India in the Super 4 match, Pakistan can reach the final of the Asia Cup. For that, Pakistan will have to win their remaining two matches against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and hope that India also beat Bangladesh.
If Bangladesh beat India but lose to Pakistan, and India beat Sri Lanka, that will mean three teams will be at four points, which will bring net run rate into consideration.
If India win both their matches against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, then Pakistanâ€s match against Bangladesh will be a virtual knockout match. If Pakistan lose to Sri Lanka but beat Bangladesh, then they will have to hope that both those teams lose to India, and then net run rate will be the deciding factor, as these three sides will have two points each.
In short, despite the loss to India, Pakistan still have their fate in their own hands, and they have to win their matches against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and just hope India beat Bangladesh. That is the straightforward scenario for Pakistan to reach the Asia Cup final.

India has defeated Pakistan by six wickets in the second Super Fours match of the Asia Cup 2025. With this, the Men in Blue have taken their first step towards a place in the final.
The India vs Pakistan Super Fours game was Match 14 of the Asia Cup 2025. The game was played in the Dubai International Stadium and saw India win the toss, deciding to bowl first.
India vs Pakistan: India Beats Pakistan For Second Time In A Row
The Pakistani batting got off to a solid start. 11 runs were scored in the first two overs, of which Jasprit Bumrah conceded 11. But then, in the third over, Hardik Pandya took the first wicket, dismissing opener Fakhar Zaman for 15 off nine.
But then, the Men in Green formed a solid partnership. Saim Ayub, who was demoted to No. 3 in this match after three consecutive ducks, batted with opener Sahibzada Farhan for the next eight overs. While Farhan took the attacking role, Ayub played the anchor.
No more wickets fell until the 10th over mark, with Pakistan scoring 91 runs in 10 overs. But then, in the 11th over, Saim Ayub was dismissed by Shivan Dube, with Abhishek Sharma, who had dropped two catches in this game earlier, finally holding on to one.
Hussain Talat then accompanied Sahibzada on the pitch for some time but got out in the 14th over by Kuldeep Yadav, who had also dropped a catch earlier in the match. And then, an over later, Sahibzada Farhan got out after scoring a half-century, getting dismissed by Dube for 58 off 45.
At 115/4 in the 15th over, Pakistan needed a speed boost; however, the pair of Mohammad Nawaz and captain Salman Ali Agha would not provide that. It wasnâ€t until the 19th over, after Nawas was run out a couple of deliveries ago, that the score reached 150.
But with 14 runs scored in the final over, helped by a quickfire 20 off eight by Faheem Ashraf, Pakistan managed to reach a solid total of 171/5 in 20 overs. Shivam Dube was the pick of the bowlers, bowling a four-over spell of 2/33. Meanwhile, Sahibzada Farhan, with his 58, was the highest run scorer.
But then came the Men in Blueâ€s turn to bat, and they started dominating right from the first ball, as Abhishek Sharma hit Shaheen Afridi for a six on the first ball of the inning.
The opening pair of Sharma and Shubman Gill made 69 runs in the powerplay without losing any wickets. This partnership then went to the 100-run mark in the ninth over, and it wasnâ€t until the 10th over, when Faheem Ashraf would dismiss Gill for 47 off 28, that Pakistan took their first wicket for a total of 105.
However, in the very next over, captain Suryakumar Yadav got out for a duck. With India losing two quick wickets, one wouldnâ€t be at fault for thinking that the Men in Blue were in trouble. But with Abhishek Sharma causing a storm at the other end, India was still the overwhelming favourite.
But Abhishek Sharma did lose his wicket soon after, having made 74 off 39 before being dismissed by Abrar Ahmed in the 13th over. So with two new batters at the crease in the form of Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson, there was truly some trouble brewing.
So, noticing the trend of falling wickets, Tilak and Samson parked the bus on a cricket pitch. Both Varma and Sanju seemed to have been playing an ODI for all their time at the pitch.
Sanju Samson, the Player of the Match of the game against Oman, was dismissed in the 17th over for 13 off 17, with India still needing 24 runs off 20 deliveries.
This was the point where Tilak Varma picked up the pace, taking his strike rate from below 100 to over 150. He, along with a supporting Hardik Pandya, took the team home in the 19th over as India won the match by six wickets with seven balls to spare.
For his blistering knock of 74 runs off 39 balls with six 4s and five 6s, Abhishek Sharma was named the Player of the Match.
With their win in this India vs Pakistan Super Fours match, the Men in Blue have taken a massive step towards a place in the final. They will now face Bangladesh in their next match on Wednesday, September 24th. On the other hand, Pakistan will face Sri Lanka in their next match on Tuesday, the 23rd.

India and Pakistan’s players did not shake hands again as India comfortably won the sides’ feisty second meeting at the Asia Cup by six wickets in Dubai.
There were no handshakes when India beat Pakistan last Sunday – the rivals’ first meeting since the military conflict between the two nations earlier this year – which resulted in a complaint by Pakistan to organisers and doubts around their continuation in the competition.
Having both progressed to the Super Four stage, the captains did not acknowledge each other at the toss and the two teams did not shake hands after India cruised to a chase of 172 with seven balls to spare.
There were a series of heated flashpoints during the chase, most notably when the umpire had to step between opener Abhishek Sharma and Pakistan bowler Haris Rauf.
Abhishek and Shubman Gill exchanged words with various Pakistan bowlers during their first-wicket partnership of 105 in 59 balls for the first wicket, which broke the back of the chase.
Gill made 47 and Abhishek 74 from 39 before Tilak Varma sealed the win – India’s seventh in a row against Pakistan across formats – with a six to finish 30 not out.
Earlier, Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan hit 58 from 45 balls and celebrated his fifty by using his bat to mimic firing a gun.
India and Pakistan engaged in a four-day military conflict in April following a deadly militant attack on tourists in India-administered Kashmir.
Pakistan reached 91-1 after 10 overs and took 42 runs from the last three but were punished for losing their way in between.
There was a run of 40 balls without a boundary during the middle overs – India seamer Shivam Dube particularly effective in taking 2-33.
Unlike after last week’s meeting when captain Suryakumar Yadav paid tributes to India’s armed forces, neither he nor Pakistan captain Salman Agha referenced the wider situation at the post-match presentation.
Pakistan play Sri Lanka on Tuesday, while India’s next game is against Bangladesh on Wednesday.
If they finish in the top two of the four-team group they will meet again in Sunday’s final.
