MADRID — Marco Penge is in position to win the Spanish Open after the Englishman reeled off eight birdies Saturday, while home favorite Jon Rahm saw his hopes of landing a record fourth title all but disappear.
Penge went to 16 under for the tournament after shooting a 7-under 64 in the third round. The overnight leader started the day with a third-hole bogey but then went on a red-hot run, going under par on eight out of 10 holes to distance himself from the pack.
“Whatever the outcome is, it’s going to be a great experience, great memories for me,” Penge said. “Tomorrow doesn’t define anything. It’s just another day, an 18-hole round of golf.”

Playing partner Joel Girrbach of Switzerland is his nearest challenger, four shots back. Daniel Brown and Patrick Reed are five back, followed by Tom McKibbin, who is six behind.
Rahm will need a massive turnaround Sunday after a 71 that included a double bogey. He is 12 shots back and tied for 28th. The Ryder Cup winner is trying to surpass Seve Ballesteros as the tournament’s most successful golfer since the creation of the European tour in 1972.
The 27-year-old Penge broke his wedge when he got stuck behind a tree on the second hole.
“I knew it was going to break,” he said. “I kind of picked a club I didn’t think I was going to need the rest of the way, just made sure not to hit my hand on the tree.”
Penge began the day with a one-shot lead. He will now bid for his third tour win after also prevailing this year at the Danish Golf Championship and the Hainan Classic.

-They opened with a video showing a “hand off” the (meaningless, barely ever mentioned) Crown Jewel Title belts from Saudio Arabia to Australia 7,065 miles.
(Keller’s Analysis: This had the vibe of a bad WWE Films-produced action-adventure or thrilled movie. I mean, it’d be cool if this was done for a meaningful title belt the fans had a reason to care about and was part of the narrative year round.)
-They cut to the arena where Cole touted all the bedazzling of the Crown Jewel Title belts which was shown at ringside.
-Cody Rhodes made his ring entrance wearing a blue suit with a red tie. He carried his WWE Title belt to the ring with him.

MADRID — Jon Rahm made seven birdies to get back into contention for a fourth title at the Spanish Open on Friday, but fellow Ryder Cup winner Shane Lowry couldn’t fully recover from a poor opening day as he missed the cut.
Rahm’s 5-under 66 put him five shots behind leader Marco Penge of England (67) after the Spaniard had opened with a 72 on Thursday at his home tournament.
Lowry had an even worse start with a 75 in the opening round — two weeks after making the clinching putt to win the Ryder Cup for Europe — and a 68 on Friday wasn’t enough to avoid missing the cut by one stroke.
Penge hit four birdies in a flawless round to sit one shot ahead of a trio made up of Jeff Winther of Denmark, Joel Girbach of Switzerland and Canada’s Aaron Cockerill.
Rahm is tied for 18th. He is trying to surpass Seve Ballesteros as the tournament’s most successful golfer since the creation of the European tour in 1972.
Rahm is making his seventh appearance in Madrid, with his victories coming in 2018, 2019 and 2022. He was runner-up to fellow Spaniard Ãngel Hidalgo in a playoff last year.
Hidalgo won’t be back to challenge Rahm this time after the defending champion missed the cut at three over.

Brothers Steph, Seth Curry swap jerseys at Warriors open practice – NBC Sports Bay Area & California
The Warriors’ open practice last week delivered more than drills and shooting — it gave us a priceless sibling moment.
Seth Curry donned No. 30 while Steph sported No. 31, swapping their usual jersey numbers for the day in a playful nod to their shared basketball lineage.
Steph Curry has been a Warrior for life. Drafted by Golden State in 2009, he has become the face of the franchise, a multi-time MVP and champion. He has worn No. 30 for all 16 seasons of his Warriors career, a number thatâ€s become part of his identity as much as his shooting form.
So when his younger brother joined Golden State, one question lingered: what number would Seth Curry take?
He wasnâ€t able to secure No. 30 from Steph.
“I tried to buy it from him,†Seth joked. “He said he didnâ€t need the money.â€Â
Seth actually has worn No. 30 for most of his own career, including recent stints with the Brooklyn Nets, Dallas Mavericks and Charlotte Hornets. Before that, he spent two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers wearing No. 31, and earlier in his career bounced between 30, 31 and 10 as he moved from team to team.
This NBA season is the first time since Seth entered the league as an undrafted rookie in 2013 that the two have shared a training camp, finally taking the floor as teammates instead of competitors.
The 35-year-old joined the Warriors on an Exhibit 9 contract, which allows him to participate in training camp and the preseason. Because of the NBAâ€s second-apron restrictions, Golden State will need to waive him before finalizing its roster — but the team can re-sign him as early as Nov. 11 while staying under the tax threshold.
The lighthearted jersey swap at open practice gave Warriors fans a glimpse of the brothers†easy chemistry — and a reminder of how rare it is to see both Currys on the same court.
Steph remains the Warriors†cornerstone, while Seth begins a new chapter in familiar territory, wearing a familiar number — just not No. 30.
Tarik Skubal, John Smoltz, David Wright Among 60 Participants Teeing Off for Charity at Exclusive Course
Major League Baseball today introduced the Capital One MLB Open, a new competitive golf tournament featuring current and former MLB stars. The tournament at Shadow Creek, the exclusive course owned by MGM Resorts International, will be a cornerstone of MLB Awards Week Nov. 12-14.
Sixty current and former Major Leaguers representing all 30 Clubs are scheduled to participate in the Capital One MLB Open, including Jimmy Rollins, Tarik Skubal, John Smoltz, Justin Turner and David Wright, while Mookie Betts provides commentary as a correspondent from the links. Tournament coverage airs Tuesday night, Nov. 18 on TNT with additional highlights and coverage on MLB Network Thursday, Nov. 20. The full list of participants will be announced at a later date and many of the participating players will also attend the MLB Awards at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on Thursday, Nov. 13.
“For years weâ€ve wanted to create this truly one-of-a-kind offseason golf experience for players and fans, but it took the support of key partners in Capital One, MGM Resorts and TNT Sports to bring everything together,†said Noah Garden, MLB Deputy Commissioner, Business & Media. “Now with this unique and competitive event in an exceptional location, we can showcase more of our players and allow their personalities to shine in a setting where fans havenâ€t seen them before.â€
The three-day event leads off with a pro-am, pairing MLB stars past and present with amateur players for a one-of-a-kind experience. The televised event features a two-day tournament with a competitive field of the current and former MLB players going head-to-head in a team gross best-ball format. A unique scoring system will turn every hole into a chance for players to climb the leaderboard. Using a modified Stableford point-based scoring system, every individual plays their own ball, with the team using the best ball and earning points for their score on each hole. The team with the most points wins the tournament and the top three teams earn monetary donations to the charities of their choice.
“We are excited to partner with Major League Baseball on the inaugural Capital One MLB Open, an exciting extension of our MLB Sponsorship,†said Byron Daub, Vice President of Brand Sponsorships at Capital One. “Our cardholders will have access and VIP packages that include the rare opportunity to play Shadow Creek with MLB current players and legends, as a part of the Pro-Am.â€
In addition to the special TNT recap broadcast, Bleacher Report, MLB Network and @MLB will provide further coverage of the tournament. The television production will be led by PGA Tour Productions, with support from MLB Network. The Tournament Director is Mike Milthorpe of Milthorpe Sports and the Tournament is a Mike Flaskey Entertainment Production.
“We have worked with MLB over the last several years to refine and bring to life our vision for this exciting tournament,†said Corrine Flaskey, CEO, Mike Flaskey Entertainment. “It is a great example of how the game of golf can be fun, competitive and raise notable funds for charity.â€
The Capital One MLB Open takes place during MLB Awards Week, with the annual MLB Awards presented by MGM Rewards airing live on MLB Network from The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on Thursday, Nov. 13. According to statisticians Opta,, external Sabalenka is the fourth female player to win their first 20 main draw matches in a single WTA level event since 1990 after Monica Seles at the Australian Open (33-0), Steffi Graf in Leipzig (25-0) and Caroline Wozniacki in New Haven (20-0).
Sabalenka, who retained her US Open title in September, controlled the match against Rybakina, sealing the first set with a hold before breaking the Kazakh’s serve in the first game of the second.
Despite a few service wobbles in the closing stages, Sabalenka took a comfortable win to set up the match with Pegula – a player against whom she has won eight of her 10 meetings.
Asked about her consecutive wins at the tournament, four-time major winner Sabalenka said she feels a “really great connection” with the fans in China.
“I feel at home every time playing here. Honestly, that’s just crazy,” she said.
Sixth seed Pegula was a set down against Siniakova before fighting back to take the second set unchallenged. She then clinched the third set for her 50th win of the season, boosting her chances of qualifying for next month’s season-ending WTA Finals.
Pegula’s last seven matches have all gone to three sets, with the world number six losing just one of them. “I guess I’m in really good shape,” she said.
American Gauff, seeded third, converted five of eight break points against German Siegemund, and has only dropped nine games across three rounds in Wuhan so far.
The French Open champion and world number three, who was defeated by Amanda Anisimova in the China Open semi-finals last week, faces seventh seed Paolini next.
Italian Paolini, ranked eighth in the world, had lost her previous six matches against Poland’s Swiatek, but the 29-year-old took just 26 minutes to secure the opening set against the second seed on her way to a memorable victory.
MADRID — Jon Rahm and Shane Lowry struggled in their return to action after helping Europe win the Ryder Cup, with Rahm briefly arguing with a marshal who tried to cheer him up during the Spanish Open on Thursday.
After his drive found the left rough on the par-4 eighth hole, Rahm saw his lie and started complaining: “What a day, what a day,†he said, followed by an expletive.
The marshal who marked his ball said “It’s OK,†and Rahm immediately looked at him and said: “Don’t tell me it’s OK, please. Thank you.â€
The marshal apologized as he walked away, while Rahm continued complaining: “It’s not OK.â€
Rahm made a par on the hole, but then bogeyed the next — his last of the day — to finish with a round of 1-over 72. He holed a bunker shot for an eagle on the par-5 14th, but his round included only one birdie and four bogeys.
Rahm played in the same group as Lowry, who made the clinching Ryder Cup putt for the Europeans in New York last month, when the raucous home crowd tormented the European players from the start. Rahm said while in Madrid that the Ryder Cup was the toughest week mentally of his career.
Lowry shot a 4-over 75 in his opening round at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. The Irishman had six bogeys and two birdies.
The clubhouse leaders were Englishman Marco Penge and Frenchman Frederic Lacroix, who shot rounds of 5-under 66.
Rahm is trying to win a record fourth Spanish Open title and surpass Seve Ballesteros as the tournament’s most successful golfer since the creation of the European tour in 1972. Rahm is making his seventh appearance in Madrid, with his victories coming in 2018, 2019 and 2022. He was runner-up to fellow Spaniard Ãngel Hidalgo in a playoff last year.
Ballesteros won the last of his 50 titles on the European tour at the Spanish Open in 1995.
It is the first time the tournament offers an automatic spot in next year’s Masters to the winner. The top finisher not otherwise qualified will also gain entry into The Open.
World No. 1 tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, also a Spaniard, was among those following Rahm in Thursday’s opening round in Madrid.

Relief pitcher Devin Williams expressed interest in potentially re-signing with the New York Yankees following the team’s playoff elimination at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 4 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters after the Yanks’ season-ending, 5-2 defeat, Williams said he is “definitely open” to signing a deal that would keep him in New York:
Williams added that he has enjoyed his time with the Yankees despite the challenges he faced during the 2025 season, saying, “At first, it was a challenge, but I’ve grown to love being here. I love the city. … I’ve really enjoyed my experience here.”

Blue Jays vs. Yankees (10/08/2025)
New York acquired Williams in an offseason trade that sent infielder Caleb Durbin and pitcher Nestor Cortes to the Milwaukee Brewers.
At the time, it felt like a small price to pay for a pitcher who had been among the most dominant closers in baseball the previous few seasons.
Over his six MLB seasons in Milwaukee before his arrival in New York, Williams posted a 27-10 record with 68 saves, a 1.83 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and 375 strikeouts over 235.2 innings.
It seemed like a slam dunk pickup for the Yanks, adding a two-time All-Star, two-time Trevor Hoffman NL Reliever of the Year and the 2020 NL Rookie of the Year to the bullpen.
However, Williams struggled out of the gate in New York and never fully recovered. He struggled through what was the worst statistical season of his career by far, going 4-6 with 18 saves, a 4.79 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP and 90 strikeouts over 62 innings.
Williams began the season as the Yankees’ closer, but he allowed runs in two of his first four outings and gave up three earned runs in three separate appearances in April alone.
That led to Williams being demoted from the closer role, and although he took it back momentarily, the job ended up going to David Bednar after the Yankees acquired him from the Pittsburgh Pirates at the trade deadline.
The totality of the season was not great for Williams, but he did not surrender a run in any of his final nine regular-season appearances, and from Aug. 10 to Sept. 28, he had a 2.50 ERA in 18 innings.
Williams was also effective in four playoff outings, allowing three hits, two walks and no earned runs, while striking out four.
It is fair to wonder if Williams did enough to interest the Yankees in retaining him, although that may largely depend on his asking price.
Williams, Luke Weaver, Ryan Yarbrough and Paul Blackburn are all set to hit free agency, while the Yankees have club options on Tim Hill and Jonathan Loaisiga.
Bednar, Camilo Doval, Fernando Cruz and Mark Leiter Jr. are the top relievers still under contract for next season, potentially opening the door for the Yanks to have a much-needed overhaul of their bullpen.
Whether that includes Williams remains to be seen, but given how he ended the 2025 season, he could be a prime bounce-back candidate in 2026.
