SAN FRANCISCO — The NBA fined Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga $35,000 for the actions that led to his ejection late in the first half of a preseason win in Portland on Tuesday night.

Kuminga was upset after he didn’t receive a whistle on a shot attempt with seven seconds left in the second quarter. Kuminga stumbled while attempting a barreling transition drive through two defenders, missed the layup and immediately went after nearby official Rodney Mott, clapping in Mott’s face. Mott ejected Kuminga.

Two days later, the league fined Kuminga for “making inappropriate contact with and continuing to pursue a game official.”

After the game, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said he “kind of liked [the ejection], actually” because he has been searching for some extra fire from Kuminga.

“He got fouled,” Kerr said. “It was a frustration play. I have no problem with it. He deserved the foul. He was getting fouled quite a bit. It was a physical game.”

After some contentious contract negotiations this summer, Kuminga returned to the Warriors on a two-year, $46.8 million contract earlier this month, arriving at training camp a couple days late. He has flashed some improved playmaking in the preseason and had 7 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists at the moment of his ejection.

“The way he ran on [the ejection] play, the activity he played with, the rebounding,” Kerr said. “That’s the JK who can really help our team, I loved the way he played. I love the fire, the passion, I don’t mind the ejection at all.”

Kuminga’s arm appeared to be whacked on the drive, but he told ESPN in the postgame locker room that he was most upset about his right ankle getting clipped on his gather step. Kuminga badly twisted his right ankle last season and said he had a flashback to that injury when Portland Trail Blazers forward Deni Avdija accidentally stepped on it, causing him to lose his temper on the official.

“I wasn’t surprised he got ejected because he kind of got right in [Mott’s] face,” Kerr said. “You can’t do that. They are going to eject you if you do that.”

SANTA ANA, Calif. — Tim Mead, the former head of communications for the Los Angeles Angels, admitted Wednesday to searching the desk of his former employee, Eric Kay, three times looking for potential illicit drugs or drug paraphernalia in Kay’s final years with the franchise prior to the 2019 death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs.

The revelations came during the first day of testimony in the wrongful death civil suit brought by the family of Skaggs against the Angels. Kay, a former communication director for the Angels, had previously been convicted in federal criminal court in 2022 for providing Skaggs the fentanyl-laced pill that led to his overdose in a Texas hotel room and is serving 22 years in prison.

“Three times we went through Eric’s drawers in his desk to look for what it was, I don’t know, but look for a syringe or powder or cutting tool,” said Mead, the trial’s first witness. “I had suspicions and doubts but never found anything. I felt almost relieved I didn’t find something, so I continued to believe what I was being told.”

Whenever Mead discussed Kay’s potential drug issues, he responded by saying that he believed Kay was taking “prescription medication” and mismanaging it while dealing with bipolar disorder and other mental health issues. He said he didn’t have reason to believe Kay was using illicit drugs, but he also said he searched Kay’s desk. Mead said what he was told about Kay’s conditions was bolstered by what Kay and Kay’s family told him about Kay’s issues.

Mead testified about multiple “off days” for Kay, incidents that caused concern but never rose to Mead reporting the behavior to Angels brass. Mead did involve the Angels’ employee assistance program and, at one point in 2017, a human resources employee in an attempt to get Kay help.

The lengthy testimony led to testy exchanges between Mead and the plaintiff’s lead attorney, Rusty Hardin. Late Wednesday, Hardin asked Mead if he played God when it came to decisions with Kay.

“I didn’t play God, counselor,” Mead said in one of the final questions of his first day of testimony. “I tried to help an individual and his family. … And I made decisions based on asking the questions … processing the information I was given.”

Hardin alternated between painting Mead as a concerned friend and boss and focusing on the unreported incidents. Hardin showed Mead’s concern in multiple text conversations between Mead and Kay’s wife, Camela, about a failed intervention with Kay in 2017 and Kay’s continued erratic behavior.

Mead walked the jury and a crowded courtroom through multiple incidents from 2013 through 2019, including Kay’s hospitalization in 2018 after a problem at Angels stadium where Kay was “sweating and in one of his off periods.” It was, Mead said, the worst he’d seen Kay and when he realized there was a problem he couldn’t handle on his own.

Mead, who left the Angels organization to take a job with the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019, had multiple contentious exchanges with Hardin, including when Mead said he did not recall finding small baggies of drugs in Kay’s home the day after a failed 2017 intervention and when Mead smiled when giving an answer about potential violations of the Angels’ drug policy.

Hardin then asked Mead the meaning of the smile. Mead explained it was about performing in a fit condition. Mead began giving examples of himself taking medication for a head cold and would he be sent home because he wasn’t in peak condition.

Hardin responded: “You know these examples you just gave have nothing to do with what this is about. If Eric Kay was on the job intoxicated at any time, prescribed or not, was that a violation of this policy.”

Mead responded, “Yes sir.”

Mead also recalled a 2013 panic attack Kay had at Yankee Stadium but denied Kay told him at the time he was taking five Vicodin a day. At the time, Mead did alert the Angels’ EAP program about Kay and tried to get him help.

Mead admitted he never required Kay to take a drug test and didn’t ask the Angels about it until Kay began dealing with the club’s EAP program.

Mead testified he never went to human resources with potential complaints against Kay or when Kay exhibited poor decision-making or behavior. That included two incidents with interns: one where Kay had an affair with an Angels intern in another department, and another a few years later when a separate intern complained to Mead about Kay yelling at her.

Mead said he didn’t report the affair because he “looked at it as a very personal issue.” He spoke slowly as he testified about this, saying he instead talked with “both of them about judgment” and how it was “inappropriate.”

In the yelling incident, Mead had the intern write an official letter but reached a resolution with Kay and the intern before submitting it to human resources. Mead held the letter until he left his job.

Mead testified he admonished Kay multiple times over the years for his behavior and decisions. Mead said multiple times he was just trying to help his longtime employee.

At the end of testimony Wednesday, Hardin asked Mead if sometimes good people can be negligent. Mead responded affirmatively. Hardin asked whether people trying to do the right thing can make mistakes. Mead responded affirmatively again.

Then Hardin asked Mead if this “maybe” happened here. Mead said, “No sir, I don’t.”

Mead’s testimony continues Friday when the trial resumes in Orange County Superior Court. The Skaggs family is seeking $118 million in estimated lost wages plus an undetermined amount in damages from the Angels.

Jonathan Kuminga didnâ€t make it to the second half of Tuesday nightâ€s preseason game.

The Golden State forward was thrown out of a 118-111 Warriors victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in the final moments of the second quarter after he made contact with an official while arguing for a call. That led to an immediate technical foul and ejection.

Kuminga was driving to the rim at the Moda Center trying to get a bucket to fall before the buzzer, though he missed the layup after thinking that he drew contact in the middle of the lane. As play went the other way to wrap up the quarter, Kuminga got into the official’s face and made contact with him — which will lead to an ejection every time.

Kuminga had 7 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in 18 minutes when he left.

Tuesdayâ€s outing was Kumingaâ€s third this preseason, and came just weeks after he landed a new two-year, $48.5 million deal to return to the franchise after months of uncertainty. Kuminga and the Warriors had been in a contract dispute throughout the offseason that frequently felt like it was going nowhere. The new deal now means that Kuminga will be eligible to be traded in January, which is something that is reportedly likely to be explored at a minimum.

Kuminga, who the Warriors took with the No. 7 overall pick in 2021, averaged 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds while shooting 30.5% from behind the arc last season. The 23-year-old missed significant time last season due to an ankle injury he went down with in January, but he returned in time for the postseason.

The Trail Blazers took a five-point lead into the locker room at halftime, but the Warriors surged ahead in the fourth quarter to grab the seven-point win. Stephen Curry dropped 28 points while shooting 4-of-11 from the 3-point line, and Quinten Post added 16 points off the bench.

All five of the Trail Blazers’ starters hit double figures in the loss. Shaedon Sharpe led the way with 18 points after he shot 7-of-16 from the field. Donovan Clingan added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Deni Avdija finished with 15 points.

The Warriors have one game left, Friday night against the Los Angeles Clippers, in their preseason slate. They will open the regular season on Oct. 21 against the Los Angeles Lakers.

CM Punk is the featured star on the official poster for WWE’s next Saturday Night’s Main Event episode.

The Punk-themed poster was unveiled by Paul “Triple H” Levesque on social media today. No matches for the November 1 show have been announced yet — and it looks like Punk’s original plans may be changing due to an injury suffered by Seth Rollins.

On Raw this Monday, Punk became the number one contender to the World Heavyweight Championship by defeating Jey Uso and LA Knight in a triple threat match. WWE’s original intention was for Rollins to defend the title against Punk at Saturday Night’s Main Event on November 1. But Rollins suffered a shoulder injury at Crown Jewel: Perth and is now expected to undergo surgery.

WWE has not confirmed if Rollins will be vacating the title or announced how a new champion will be crowned if he does. As the number one contender, Punk would figure to factor into any plans to decide a new champion.

The ending of Raw this week saw The Vision betray Rollins and beat him down. Bron Breakker, Bronson Reed, and a shocked Paul Heyman posed as the show ended while Breakker held Rollins’ title belt.

The November 1 episode of SNME is being held at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. It has a start time of 7 p.m. Eastern streaming live on Peacock.

WWE provided a first look at the official poster for next year’s WrestleMania 42 on Tuesday.

In a post on X, WWE advertised WrestleMania 42 ticket sales and accompanied it with the poster, which features Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, Becky Lynch, Rhea Ripley, CM Punk, Seth Rollins and Jade Cargill:

Lesnar’s inclusion is significant since he has not been part of WrestleMania since WrestleMania 39 in 2023 when he defeated Omos.

Prior to his match against John Cena at Wrestlepalooza this past weekend, Lesnar had not competed in a WWE match since SummerSlam 2023, but all signs point toward him being a significant part of the WrestleMania 42 card at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Lesnar is a multi-time WrestleMania main eventer, as are Reigns, Rhodes, Punk and Rollins. Reigns is the all-time record holder with 10 WrestleMania main events, and Rhodes has headlined three consecutive WrestleManias.

Rollins has been in the Night 1 main event back-to-back years, teaming with Rhodes to beat Reigns and The Rock at WrestleMania 40, and then beating Reigns and Punk in a Triple Threat at WrestleMania 41.

Lynch competed in the first-ever women’s match to main event a WrestleMania at WrestleMania 35 when she defeated Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair in a Triple Threat.

Punk was long outspoken about his dream of being in a WrestleMania main event, and he finally made it happen this year in the Night 1 Triple Threat against Reigns and Rollins.

Ripley has yet to be in a WrestleMania main event, but she is arguably the biggest women’s wrestling star in the company, and she has had countless memorable matches on the Grandest Stage of Them All against the likes of Flair, Asuka, Lynch, Bianca Belair and Iyo Sky.

Perhaps the most notable inclusion on the poster is Cargill, who has only been with WWE since 2023 and has yet to win singles gold in the company.

This year marked Cargill’s first singles match at WrestleMania, beating Naomi. She has also recently been embroiled in a rivalry with Tiffany Stratton over the WWE Women’s Championship, but she has fallen short of capturing the title thus far.

While plenty can happen between now and April 2026, it is probably a safe bet that WWE has big plans for the Superstars included on the WrestleMania 42 poster.
