In women’s One Day Internationals, Smriti Mandhana made history by breaking the record for the most ODI runs scored in a calendar year. She surpassed Belinda Clark’s 1997 record of 970 runs on October 9, 2025, in India’s ICC Women’s ODI World Cup match against South Africa in Visakhapatnam. Mandhana reached 972 runs in just 17 matches when she hit a six off Ayabonga Khaka in the eighth over.

Before the match, Mandhana had 959 runs in 17 ODIs at an average of 59.93, with four centuries and three fifties in 2025. With that six, she moved to 972 runs in 17 matches, overtaking Clark, who had scored 970 runs in 16 games. Pacer Kranti Gaud was the star of the show as India beat Pakistan by 88 runs at the 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup in Colombo on Sunday.

Gaud not only scored 8 runs with two boundaries off just four deliveries in the first innings but also later returned to torment Pakistan with bowling figures of 3/20 to help India to a second consecutive win of the World Cup.

“It was my first India-Pakistan match. I never read too much into the past and off-field situations,” Gaud said in the post-match press conference.

“I mind my own business. If I have been entrusted to bowl, I just run in and bowl,” she further added when prodded if the player relations between the two teams had deteriorated due to the recent political tensions between the two nations.

India vs Australia Squad: Shubman Gill has been named as the captain of the Indian Cricket Team for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, replacing Rohit Sharma in that role. This likely brings an end to Sharmaâ€s era of captaincy for the national team.

India is currently playing a two-match Test series against the West Indies at home. The hosts won the first Test in Ahmedabad within three days by an innings and 140 runs. The second game in Delhi will be played from October 10th to 14th. A few days after that, the tour of Australia will begin on October 19th.

India will visit Australia to play three ODIs and five T20Is. This will be the second time that the Men in Blue will be down under this year, as they played the latter half of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in January.

BCCI has announced the Indian Cricket Team squad for both the ODI and T20I series. While the shorter-format side is not too noteworthy, the ODI side has made a lot of waves since it was announced.

Firstly, it is the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to the national team for the first time in about eight months. The two featured in the BGT 2024/25. They then led India to a win in the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, in May, they announced their retirements from Test cricket, with these announcements coming only a couple of days apart.

This meant that the two did not represent India during the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England against the Three Lions this summer. And with them having announced their T20I retirement last year, they also did not play in the Asia Cup 2025.

However, Rohit Sharmaâ€s return to the ODI side comes with a caveat. While Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill took over the T20I and Test captaincy after Rohit retired from these formats, the ODI side was still led by him. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel revealed the squad on Saturday in Ahmedabad, where India, led by Shubman Gill, beat the West Indies convincingly in a Test match by an innings and 140 runs.

This concludes Rohitâ€s tenure as Indiaâ€s skipper in any format, though he has been named in the ODI squad to face Australia, and so has Virat Kohli.

Rohit and Kohli, both of whom retired from Tests and T20Is, have not played international cricket since Indiaâ€s ICC Champions Trophy triumph in March in Dubai.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that having three different captains in the three formats was not a feasible option. Hence, Rohit has been replaced by Gill as the ODI skipper. Gill, who got the Test captaincy earlier this year after Rohit retired, is the T20I vice-captain as well and now holds the ODI captaincy post.

Agarkar said, “Itâ€s practically impossible to have three different captains for three formats. It is also tough for the coach to plan with three different captains. And it gives the next guy enough time to plan for whatever is coming.â€

It has been reported that the decision to replace Rohit with Gill as the ODI skipper was unanimously taken by Agarkar, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Shreyas Iyer has been named Gillâ€s deputy.

Rohit Sharma was made the white-ball skipper in late 2021. While India endured an embarrassing loss in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final against England in Adelaide, Rohit led a shift in the landscape of how India batted in white-ball cricket.

Under Rohit, India reached the final of the 2023 World Cup at home but lost the final to Australia. The team then won back-to-back ICC trophies—the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy—remaining unbeaten in both tournaments.

Rohit ends his India captaincy career as one of the only two Indian captains, with MS Dhoni being the first, to win two ICC trophies.
