Multiple top stars from “WWE NXT” are backstage at “WWE SmackDown” on Friday night as the show is set to go live from the Moody Center in Austin, Texas. According to PWInsider Elite, those stars include Oba Femi, Trick Williams, and Sol Ruca.
The outlet didn’t confirm just why the former NXT Champions and the former Women’s North American Champion are at the show ahead of “NXT’s” Deadline premium live event on Saturday, which will emanate from the Boeing Center in San Antonio, Texas. However, John Cena announced that Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, which will feature his final match, will also be a showcase of “NXT” talent against main roster stars. There was no initial report that Femi, Williams, and Ruca were brought in to set up angles or matches for the show in Washington, DC, however.
Cena previously announced the competitors for both the men’s and women’s Iron Survivor matches at Deadline, which include Ruca on the women’s side. Williams was defeated by Myles Borne and lost the opportunity to enter the match. Femi will compete against NXT Champion Ricky Saints for the chance to become a two-time holder of the developmental brand’s gold.Â
“The Never Seen 17” has been adamant that “NXT” talent should be featured along the way to his final match. “NXT” star Je’Von Evans also had the opportunity to compete to become Cena’s final opponent, but lost in the “Last Time is Now” tournament in the first round to GUNTHER.
As Friday Night SmackDown goes live from the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, a surprising development is unfolding behind the scenes—multiple top NXT stars are backstage.
According to PWInsider Elite, NXT stars Oba Femi, Trick Williams, and Sol Ruca have all been spotted backstage ahead of the December 5 show. While their exact role tonight hasnâ€t been confirmed, the timing is hard to ignore.
Cena recently announced that Saturday Nightâ€s Main Event on December 13—his retirement match—would also feature NXT talent vs. main roster stars, hinting that his final chapter might double as a platform for the next generation. Tonightâ€s SmackDown may lay the groundwork for that.
Lineup for WWE SmackDown on December 5, 2025:
- Last Time Is Now Tournament Final: GUNTHER vs. LA Knight
- United States Title Open Challenge: Ilja Dragunov (c) vs. ???
- Non-Title Match: Jade Cargill vs. Alba Fyre
- Alexa Bliss vs. Kairi Sane
- Cody Rhodes appears
- Solo Sikoa addresses the Wyatt Sicks attack
Are you hoping to see NXT stars face off against Cena and other main roster legends on December 13? Drop your dream match ideas or predictions in the comments below—weâ€d love to hear who you think should step up next.

This former WWE NXT talent has reacted to his TNA debut.
Randy Beidelschies, formerly known as Javier Bernal, took to social media to comment on TNA iMPACTâ€s upcoming debut on AMC. The companyâ€s flagship show will begin airing on the network with a live broadcast on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
Congratulating TNA and AMC on the new partnership, Javi revealed that he made his TNA Xplosion debut on the showâ€s December 2 broadcast. The accompanying clip shows Javi planting Judas Icarus with a fisherman suplex for a near fall.
“Congrats to @ThisIsTNA and @AMC_TV! Also today, on #TNAXplosion now on YouTube, I make my TNA debut!â€
Javi was previously signed to WWE, where he competed on NXT from 2021 to 2025. He was sidelined with an injury toward the tail end of his run with the brand and was released from his contract as part of the roster cuts earlier this year.
Javi is married to former NXT Womenâ€s Champion Tatum Paxley. His last match for the brand took place at a live event on April 26, 2025. He made his TNA Xplosion debut alongside Jake Painter against Sinner and Saint (Judas Icarus and Travis Williams) at the November 15 taping.

It appears WWE is teasing the return of Tony Dâ€Angelo.
The December 2, 2025, episode of WWE NXT featured General Manager Ava presiding over a backstage NXT Championship contract signing segment between Ricky Saints and Oba Femi. During the segment, a bridge popped up on the screen behind Ava for a few seconds before turning back to the NXT Deadline logo.
The bridge shown on the screen is related to former NXT North American Champion Tony Dâ€Angelo, who has been absent since July 2025, when he dropped his Don gimmick. It was the same bridge that Tony Dâ€Angelo and his faction members threatened Ilja Dragunov after abducting him on the March 12, 2024, episode of WWE NXT.
General Manager Ava also received a mysterious package during the latest episode of NXT, which seemingly contained cut-up pieces of Tony Dâ€Angeloâ€s Don hat. With NXT Deadline set to take place this Saturday, fans are speculating whether WWE is teasing Dâ€Angeloâ€s return at the event.
Signed. Sealed. Delivered.

WWE NXT has finalized the card for Saturday’s Deadline PLE in San Antonio adding two new matches, and making several other key announcements.
In new bouts added, NXT North American Champion Ethan Page will put his title on the line against Mr. Iguana from AAA. Iguana stole Page’s car from the NXT parking lot on Thursday’s show to set up the grudge match.
Also newly added, Tatum Paxley and Izzi Dame will go one-on-one at Deadline. Dame cost Paxley the NXT Women’s Championship by turning against her at NXT Gold Rush last month to lay the groundwork for the bout.
It was also announced during Tuesday’s NXT TV go-home show for Deadline that the men’s NXT Championship match with Ricky Saints defending against Oba Femi will open the PLE.
Finally, by virtue of his pinfall victory in the eight-man tag main event on Tuesday’s show, Myles Borne gets to choose his entry position in the men’s Iron Survivor Challenge bout at Deadline to crown a new number one contender to the NXT title.

Ethan Page will be defending his North American Championship against AAA’s Mr. Iguana at “WWE NXT” Deadline.Â
Page has been North American Champion for 190 days since dethroning current NXT Champion Ricky Saints in May, having since gone on to defend the title on eight occasions as well as adding the AAA Mixed Tag Team Championship to his collection alongside Chelsea Green.Â
His male contemporary in the match to become Mixed Tag Team Champion at AAA Alianzas was none other than Iguana, defending alongside La Hiedra, and Page similarly emerged victorious in a rematch last month.Â
With that, and the fact that John Cena had omitted him from the Iron Survivor line-up at Deadline, Page was shown during “NXT” telling Ava that he intended to take the night off. He got into his car and looked set to leave as Ava told him her plans to have him defend the North American title, and he then screamed as it became clear he was sharing the car with his incumbent challenger. Iguana then drove away in Page’s car as he called for Ava to call the police, bringing the segment to a close as she mocked him.Â
Page will be defending the title against a AAA star for the second time in a row, having last defended the title against El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. in a Day of the Dead match at Halloween Havoc.Â
With two weeks of Gold Rush now over, WWE NXT is back tonight with its Deadline go-home show.
An eight-man tag team match headlines tonight’s card with Je’Von Evans, Myles Borne, Leon Slater & Joe Hendry taking on DarkState. The bout features all five of the men’s Iron Survivor Challenge competitors, with Evans, Borne, Slater, Hendry, and Dion Lennox set to face off at Saturday’s PLE.
The women’s Iron Survivor participants — Kelani Jordan, Sol Ruca, Jordynne Grace, Lola Vice, and Kendal Grey — will meet for a summit in advance of their upcoming match. The Iron Survivor bouts at Deadline will determine future challengers for the NXT Championship and NXT Women’s Championship.
Jacy Jayne is the NXT Women’s Champion once again after winning the belt from Tatum Paxley at Gold Rush. The Culling will address their betrayal of Paxley tonight.
Plus, Tavion Heights vs. Josh Briggs is set to take place on the episode. Join us for live coverage starting at 8 p.m. Eastern.
**********
NXT is on the air from a sound stage at the Performance Center in Orlando with a live studio audience. Vic Joseph is commentary as usual, but Booker T is not on the show this week. Instead, Corey Graves is back on NXT for tonight’s episode.
In the ring is NXT General Manger Ava, and she is joined by the participants of the Women’s Iron Survivor Challenge. Sol Ruca, Jordynne Grace, Kelani Jordan, Lola Vice and WWE Evolve Women’s Champion Kendal Grey are in the ring for a summit of sorts.

Four years ago, Bronson Reed captured his first WWE title when he ended Johnny Gargano’s 163-day North American Championship reign in a Steel Cage match on “WWE NXT,” an achievement that the 37-year-old considers one of the proudest moments of his professional wrestling career.
Speaking on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Reed claimed that his North American Championship win represented his decade-long efforts to earn a WWE contract.
“Yeah, it was a big deal for me. It almost felt like a culmination of all my work on the independents to get to that point. I was wrestling for 12 years before I got signed with WWE, and it was always a goal of mine to not only get signed with WWE, but become a champion … I remember this is when Triple H was still in charge of ‘NXT,’ black and gold era. It was a lot of what you did was based on what you could do in the ring.”Â
Reed continued to explain that he couldn’t help but cry during the closing moments of the show after winning the title, and responded to fans who question how wrestlers can be emotional about a major victory if they’re aware of the outcome beforehand.
“You still got to remember that winning a championship means that the people behind the scenes have faith in you to be that champion, and when you’re someone like me who’s followed this their whole life and you’ve dreamt of these moments, it’s surreal to have these moments come true.”
Although he’s proud of his WWE resume thus far, Reed admitted that he needs to acquire some gold on the main roster, and expects to be emotional when the moment occurs, but will attempt to remain composed now that he’s a heel.
