Logan Gilbert named Game 6 starter in 2025 ALCS
\n\n”,”providerName”:”Twitter”,”providerUrl”:” exited an April 25 start vs. Miami with a right elbow flexor strain and missed the next two months, then he averaged 5 1/3 innings per start upon returning — after leading MLB with 208 2/3 frames in 2024, when he was a first-time All-Star and emerged as one of the sportâ€s true workhorses. As the Mariners†best starter last season, he earned his first career Opening Day assignment this year.\n\nThe game-by-game longevity challenges this season could also have a correlation to Gilbert blossoming into one of the gameâ€s best swing-and-miss specialists in ‘25. After all, getting to strike three leads to deeper counts, and Gilbert ranked second in MLB to Philadelphiaâ€s Zack Wheeler with a 32.3% K rate (min. 130 innings pitched).\n\nThat type of pitching profile is ripe for October, where there are no holes in any lineup — and especially Torontoâ€s, which stormed back into this best-of-seven round after the series shifted to Seattle. The Blue Jays outscored the Mariners by 15 runs (21-6) in Games 3-4 before Cal Raleigh and Eugenio Suárez authored two moments for the ages in the Mariners’ Game 5 win.\n\nThe Blue Jays had a lower K rate (17.8%) and whiff rate (21.6%) than any offense in the sport, which should lead to a power-on-power matchup in Game 6.”,”type”:”text”},{“__typename”:”Markdown”,”content”:”“Thatâ€s a good point,†Gilbert said. “We have seen that a lot in this series. It’s somewhere in the middle. I think you know the situation of the game, too. We never want to shy away from what we do, and getting good counts is huge, but also knowing there’s some freedom to go to our spots when we have those situations.â€\n\nAs for Bryan Woo, the Mariners obviously arenâ€t going to tip their hand on his availability after the 2025 All-Star threw two innings in Game 5. But given that Woo only threw 28 pitches, albeit high-stress, how heâ€s deployed will continue to be of immense intrigue.”,”type”:”text”},{“__typename”:”Video”,”contentDate”:”2025-10-18T03:08:32.387Z”,”preferredPlaybackScenarioURL({\”preferredPlaybacks\”:\”mp4AvcPlayback\”})”:” Woo breaks down his relief outing SEATTLE — A nation turns its hopeful eyes to Kevin Gausman once more.
The staff ace with two Game 1 starts under his belt already in this postseason will get the ball in Game 5 on Friday, when heâ€ll have a chance to put the Blue Jays within one win of a trip to the World Series after they evened the series in Game 4.
The stakes have never been higher for Gausman, the 34-year-old who was brought to Toronto four years ago for moments just like this. The two performances weâ€ve seen from Gausman this postseason have been enough, but both he and the Blue Jays know thereâ€s more in there. With Bryce Miller going for the Mariners, “good†might not cut it.
“This is what we live for,†Gausman said. “Iâ€ve thrown a lot of really good games in the World Series in my backyard. Iâ€ve never really thought about the ALCS, usually it was the World Series. This is something that, as kids, we all dreamt of, pitching in the big game or getting the big hit in the World Series or a big playoff game. As a player, you relish these opportunities to go out and show not just your team, but really the whole world what you can do.â€
Gausmanâ€s Game 1 starts against the Yankees and Mariners were nearly identical, each lasting 5 2/3 innings with 75 pitches in one and 76 in the other. The one pitch heâ€d love to take back came against the Mariners last Sunday in Toronto, when Gausmanâ€s splitter caught too much of the zone and Cal Raleigh launched a solo shot to tie the game in the sixth. In each of Gausmanâ€s starts, heâ€s been cruising until some late turbulence.
Part of being a veteran, though, is understanding that even the best-laid plans rarely last. Game plans get blown up every night. Gausman has held the early advantage in his starts so far, but it wonâ€t always go that way.
“Sometimes, you get punched in the face in the first inning and you have to change your mindset,†Gausman said. “You saw that with Shane [Bieber] yesterday. I thought he did a great job of coming back. I joked with him after the game that he took this place up to 120, then took it to zero. It was a really cool performance for him and huge for our team.â€
Thatâ€s why Gausmanâ€s workload is the most interesting wrinkle in all of this. Given his first two starts, something in the range of 75 pitches seems likely in Game 5 too, but could the Blue Jays be even quicker with the hook if Gausman stumbles? Ideally, he takes that decision out of manager John Schneiderâ€s hands and bridges the gap right to the back end of Torontoâ€s bullpen with Louis Varland, Seranthony DomÃnguez and Jeff Hoffman, but the Blue Jays will need to be ready for all possibilities.
Yes, one of those possibilities could be Trey Yesavage. If the Blue Jays were down 3-1 and fighting for their postseason lives, Yesavage would certainly be an option on short rest after throwing 70 pitches on Monday, but even in an even series, all of the Blue Jays†cards need to be on the table. Donâ€t expect Schneider to tip his hand, though. Heâ€s been keeping his cards close to his chest this postseason, even keeping a couple tucked up his sleeve.
Remember Game 4 of the ALDS at Yankee Stadium, when Yesavage made that long, slow walk from the Blue Jays†dugout to the bullpen mid-game? That was all for show. Yesavage was never truly an option in that perfectly executed bullpen game, but this is the postseason, where any distraction is worth exploring, even if itâ€s all smoke and mirrors.
Those are decisions for the chaos of the game, though. All the Blue Jays can control in the hours leading up to first pitch is their decision to roll with Gausman, putting their best foot forward in a game that could define how we remember this 2025 team.
The Yankees’ HOPE Week has been named a finalist for the 2025 Allan H. Selig Award for Philanthropic Excellence.
HOPE Week, the Yankees’ long-running initiative to celebrate inspiring individuals and organizations in their local community, is one of five finalists for this year’s Selig Award, which was created by Major League Baseball in 2010 to recognize the charitable and philanthropic efforts of MLB clubs.
Along with HOPE Week, the other 2025 finalists are the Dodgers’ Wildfire Relief and Recovery, the Red Sox’s Fenway Park Learning Lab, the D-backs’ Inter-Tribal Youth Baseball and Softball Tournament and the Royals’ Literacy League.
Fans can vote for the 2025 Selig Award winner online at MLB.com here:
Voting is open through Monday, Oct. 20.
The Yankees established HOPE Week — which stands for Helping Others Persevere and Excel — in 2009, when they moved into the new Yankee Stadium. This year marked the 16th edition of HOPE Week.
HOPE Week is celebrated over five consecutive days during baseball season, with the Yankees shining a spotlight on a different individual, family or organization every day. HOPE Week honorees get to share their inspirational stories with Yankees players and fans, and each day of HOPE Week ends with a visit to Yankee Stadium on the day of a game.
The 2025 HOPE Week honorees included Joan Hyland and her nonprofit “Love, Nana”; nonprofit organization Bottomless Closet; Ed and Sue Goldstein and their nonprofit The Valerie Fund; young Yankees fans Carmine and Vincent Gagliano and their family’s The Strength of Brothers Foundation; and Brian Worthington, founder of the New York Metro Black Pilots of America.
Over the 16 years of HOPE Week, the Yankees have had 78 unique honorees and donated more than $1 million to them and their charities.
Yankees players, coaches and front office employees all participate in the community outreach program — from Derek Jeter helping outfit low-income men who were re-entering the workforce with new suits, to CC Sabathia and Jorge Posada taking a double-decker New York tour bus with young Haitian refugees, to Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton playing kickball with a middle school girl who was bullied.
For the last 12 years, the Yankees’ Minor League teams have also held their own HOPE Weeks, allowing the organization to reach more than 400 community causes in New York and around the country.
The Yankees even win on the field for their honorees during HOPE Week. The Bronx Bombers have a 44-28 record on HOPE Week since it began and have won 31 of their last 51 HOPE Week games.

Senior quarterback Max Johnson will start for the North Carolina Tar Heels against the Clemson Tigers on Saturday.
Pete Thamel of ESPN confirmed the news on Saturday after Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports and Pete Nakos of On3 Sports both reported Friday that it was believed Johnson would get his first start of the 2025 campaign due to the fact that starting quarterback Gio Lopez is dealing with an undisclosed injury.
The 24-year-old Johnson has been something of a journeyman throughout his collegiate career, spending time at LSU and Texas A&M before joining North Carolina last season.
Johnson started the Tar Heels’ season-opening win over Minnesota in 2024, but he suffered a season-ending leg injury.
An offseason coaching change from Mack Brown to legendary, longtime New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick then called Johnson’s standing with the team into question.
Belichick ultimately went with the South Alabama transfer in Lopez as UNC’s starter, and the results have been mixed thus far.
The Tar Heels are off to a 2-2 start and coming off a 34-9 drubbing at the hands of UCF.
Lopez is completing 62.7 percent of his passes for 430 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions, while also rushing for 69 yards and one score.
Although he has only played in relief of Lopez thus far, it can be argued that Johnson has looked like the better quarterback this season, completing 66.7 percent of his passing attempts for 170 yards, two touchdowns and no picks.
Johnson, who is the son of longtime NFL quarterback and Super Bowl champion Brad Johnson, is 13-10 over his 23 career collegiate starts at LSU, Texas A&M and UNC.
He saw his most extensive action as a sophomore at LSU in 2021, throwing for 2,814 yards, 27 touchdowns and six picks in 12 games.
After entering the season as one of the top-ranked teams in the nation, Clemson is reeling, having lost three of its four games this season, including two in a row.
Johnson may give North Carolina its best chance to beat Clemson and get into the thick of the ACC title race.
And so the revamp of The Hundred begins, the sign of what the competition may be like following more than £500m of investment.
The consortium that paid most for a stake in any of the eight teams, the Tech Titans, have poached the most sought-after coach on the franchise circuit. In doing so, they reunite Andy Flower with Spirit director Mo Bobat, the pair that finally delivered the Indian Premier League title to Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The last two of the eight investment deals were due to be completed this week and an announcement is thought to be imminent.
The Ambani Family, owners of IPL outfit Mumbai Indians, have paid around £60m for a 49% stake in Oval Invincibles. Cain International, co-founded by Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, is spending about £40m for the same share in Trent Rockets.
Flower’s move could be the tip of the iceberg for players and coaches. The man he is replacing at Spirit, Justin Langer, would seem a natural fit for Manchester Originals, who have sold a majority stake to the owners of Lucknow Super Giants, Langer’s IPL team.
In the men’s competition in particular there is expected to be a huge shake-up of playing squads, with an auction then used to select players.
Franchises might be allowed to retain as few as four of their current playing group, possibly adding a limited number of direct signings before the auction. This would particularly impact the Invincibles, who have won the past three men’s Hundred competitions.
Greater investment in The Hundred is expected to attract big name men’s overseas players and one star attraction who could be involved in 2026 is Ravichandran Ashwin.
Whereas Indian men are barred from overseas leagues so long as they are playing international cricket or the IPL, legendary off-spinner Ashwin has retired from both. The 39-year-old is due to play in Australia’s Big Bash this winter.
Ashwin’s arrival could signal the arrival of other Indian megastars. Rohit Sharma is another who could be coming to the end of his time in international cricket and the IPL. Virat Kohli has a home in London, and London Spirit have just strengthened ties to his RCB.
Former Delhi cricketer Mithun Manhas has been officially elected as the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during the Annual General Meeting at the boardâ€s headquarters on Sunday.
The BCCI presidency became vacant after Roger Binny stepped down in August 2025, with Rajeev Shukla serving as interim president. With this election, Manhas joins the exclusive list of former cricketers, including Sourav Ganguly and Binny, to assume the boardâ€s top position.
Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh took to X, celebrating Manhasâ€s election, stating:
“A momentous occasion to celebrate! Mithun Manhas has been officially declared as the new President of the BCCI. A proud moment for Doda, one of the remotest parts of Jammu & Kashmir, which also happens to be my home district.”

Nominated by the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), Manhas emerged as the leading candidate after a key informal meeting of Indian cricket decision-makers last Saturday.
The 45-year-old former cricketer had an illustrious domestic career, representing Delhi before moving to Jammu & Kashmir, where he also served in coaching roles. Known for his calm demeanor and grassroots-level insight, Manhas has remained actively involved in cricket development post-retirement.
A former all-rounder, Manhas had an extensive domestic cricket career spanning from 1997-98 to 2016-17. He played 157 first-class matches, scoring 9,714 runs at an average of 45.82, including 27 centuries and 49 half-centuries. In List A cricket, he accumulated 4,126 runs from 130 matches at an average of 45.84, with 5 centuries and 26 half-centuries.
Additionally, he represented three IPL franchises – Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Pune Warriors India, and Chennai Super Kings – scoring 514 runs in 55 matches at a strike rate of 109.36.
Alongside Manhasâ€s election, the AGM also saw the appointment of former Indian bowler Amita Sharma as the chairperson of the womenâ€s national selection committee, succeeding Neetu David. Sharma, who played 116 One-Day Internationals, five Tests, and 41 T20Is for India, claimed a total of 108 wickets.
The new womenâ€s selection panel also includes former players Shyama Dey, Sulakshana Naik, Jaya Sharma, and Sravanthi Naidu. Their tenure will commence after the upcoming Womenâ€s World Cup, scheduled in India and Sri Lanka from September 30 to November 2.
Other office-bearer elections included Rajeev Shukla and Devajit Saikia being re-elected as vice-president and secretary, respectively, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia replacing Rohan Gauns Desai as joint secretary, and Raghuram Bhat being elected treasurer.
