Harry Kane said “it’s not time to panic” after Bayern Munich suffered their first defeat in all competitions this season with a 3-1 Champions League loss against Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s team made it five wins from five in the Champions League and moved three points clear at the top of the European table with goals from Jurriën Timber, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli, with teenager Lennart Karl scoring for the Bundesliga leaders.

Bayern had gone unbeaten in every game this season prior to their visit to the Emirates, including a Champions League win away to European champions Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.

But with their unbeaten run coming to an end, Kane said Bayern won’t be knocked off course by the setback.

“It’s our first loss of the season and we don’t want to panic too much about it,” Kane told TNT Sports. “But we will learn about it for sure.

“They won the first and second balls. Set pieces, we knew they would be dangerous, but I’m sure we’ll see them [Arsenal] again in the later stages of the Champions League.

“They defended man for man pretty much all over the pitch. As I said, I don’t think it’s time to panic. We have played Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal away. We have won the majority of our games.”

England captain Kane added that Bayern lost the game because they failed to cope with Arsenal’s intensity in the second-half.

“It was a tough game which is kind of what we expected,” he said. “It was a good battle in the first half which was fairly even.

“Second half we didn’t quite have the same energy or intensity and we lost too many duels.”

Arsenal coach Arteta said his players had beaten the “best team in Europe” by claiming victory against Bayern.

But Bayern coach Vincent Kompany shrugged off the praise and said it is too early to be billed as the best side in the competition.

“We had this discussion three weeks ago when we played PSG,” Kompany said. “They were mentioning the same thing.

“But I don’t think any of us want to be the best team in November. We’re trying to use everything now to build our season towards being there in the important moments.”

While Arsenal’s Champions League meeting with Bayern Munich is a match between two of Europe’s in-form clubs – both boasting 100% records in the competition, both six points clear domestically – it is also a reunion of, and friendly rivalry between, two key forwards.

For either side, victory at the Emirates would bring a top-eight league stage finish and guaranteed place in the last 16 into view, while maintaining a superb start to the domestic season. The Gunners have lost only once across all competitions, Bayern are unbeaten.

But the match will also have personal significance for two of Europe’s most creative and in-form forwards, who come up against each other just 18 months after terrorising Premier League defences in unison.

Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze and Bayern’s Michael Olise are firm friends from their three seasons together at Crystal Palace – a relationship that was strengthened through their love of chess.

After France international Olise had taught Eze how to play the game, the pair often got the pieces out for a contest at Palace’s training ground, helping to forge a bond that led to what was described at times as a telepathic on-field understanding.

Such was Eze’s natural flair for the game he won $20,000 in an online tournament in May – but he will be wary of being outmanoeuvred by Olise on the pitch.

“I didn’t start learning chess until Michael came in,” Eze said, speaking to the Athletic.

“It was him and my brother who nudged me to learn how to play and face them, so that’s when I started studying the game, watching YouTube videos of the best chess openings.”

Both players have taken a similar path over the past few years, rising from the Championship to fulfilling their potential at Crystal Palace.

They combined eight times for goals for the Eagles, with Olise providing all eight assists for Eze’s goals.

Now, they are competing against each other at the top of the European game and are also poised to feature for their countries at the World Cup.

But will either help their team to a checkmate position by full-time?

Paramount+ will ensure you don’t. There are plenty sub subplots in this one, including Harry Kane returning to the Emirates. Kane is the top-goalscorer in the Bundesliga, and he scored at the weekend as Munich ran riot, beating Freiburg 6-2.

Kane will be looking to hand out some revenge on behalf of his old club, Tottenham Hotspur, who were put to the sword by Arsenal in a crushing 4-1 defeat last weekend, which saw Eze hit a spectacular North London derby hat-trick.

Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard could return for Wednesday’s Champions League blockbuster against Bayern Munich.

The Norwegian midfielder has been sidelined since early October with a knee injury but is pushing to make his comeback at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said: “He was very close for the previous game so we are hopeful that tomorrow he can be in the squad.”

A heavyweight showdown sees the teams who began the week as the top two in the Champions League table, both with four wins from four matches, meet under the lights in north London.

Arsenal will head into the match still basking in the glory of Sunday’s 4-1 demolition of their derby rivals Tottenham.

“We have to make sure that we carry that energy tomorrow again to the stadium, to each individual and play with the same dominance, aggression, and efficiency against a top side,” added Arteta.

“This is the kind of game in the competition that we want to face and we’ve been very consistent.

“They have been as well and tomorrow is a great test for us to see where we are.

“Every opponent brings different challenges. Obviously they are in a great moment.

“The level of consistency they show in results, performances, in every metric that they have is very, very impressive. We know that.

“But as well it’s a massive opportunity for us to show what we are capable of.”

Arsenal are yet to concede a goal in the Champions League this season, but full-back Jurriën Timber knows they face a huge task in stopping former Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

The England captain has scored 15 goals in 21 appearances against the Gunners, including one for Bayern at the Emirates in the first leg of their quarter-final in 2024.

Timber has been a key part of the Premier League leaders’ superb defensive record, both domestically and in Europe this season, and is relishing the challenge of shackling Kane.

“I think he’s an amazing striker. Everyone knows that,” the Dutchman said.

“He has so many qualities. He’s been doing it for such a long time already and now at Bayern Munich, he’s one of the best players in the world.

“So it’s going to be a nice challenge for us as a team, and as defenders, to stop him tomorrow.”

Dayot Upamecano’s future at Bayern Munich has been the subject of constant speculation over the past few months.

The French international, who is Bayern Munich’s eighth-most expensive signing ever, will become a free agent in the summer amid reports he could join Real Madrid.

Footmercato reported earlier this week that Los Blancos have reached a ‘verbal agreement’ with the 27 year old to take him to Madrid next summer.

And now Bild report that Bayern are eyeing up Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate as a potential replacement for Upamecano should he depart.

Like his international teammate, Konate is set to go out of contract at the end of the season and would be permitted to start discussing terms with clubs overseas from January unless he were to agree to a new deal with Liverpool.

There’s a bit of the transfer rumour merry-go-round about those claims, given that Konate was himself said to be on Real Madrid’s wishlist earlier this season.

Konate was a regular partner to Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool romped to the Premier League title last season, but the Reds defence has come under scrutiny after an iffy start to the season.

Arne Slot’s side have conceded 14 goals in just ten league games so far, with their only domestic clean sheets coming against Burnley and Aston Villa.

Liverpool did however hold Real Madrid to a shutout at Anfield in midweek, with Konate winning plaudits for his performance against Alonso’s star-studded attack.

The Reds are said to be keen to agree a new deal with Konate rather than let him go on a free transfer.

Manchester City great Kompany played three seasons under Pep Guardiola towards the end of his career. And one can really see a lot of Guardiola in the way the former centre-back and his assistants approach ball possession and how they set up attacking plays. Positional play and the rotation within the formation are key to letting the ball circulate almost effortlessly.

Last season, Kompany already attempted to introduce positional patterns, in that his players were asked to occupy certain zones or lanes, but this year, players rotate from zone to zone more frequently, which makes it harder for defences to cover without leaving any gaps towards and into the penalty area.

Now, this is not completely unheard of when it comes to Bayern’s offensive approach. Guardiola himself implemented similar patterns after his arrival in 2013, but the Catalan failed to lead them to the Champions League final despite making real progress. During Guardiola’s three-year spell he brought in midfielder Joshua Kimmich, one of the most promising German players at the time.

Kimmich is still with Bayern and might have an explanation as to why the team look even more fearsome than back then.

“When I joined 10 years ago, we were equipped with incredible individual quality. We had 23, 24, 25 world-class players,” he said on Saturday.

“But when I now see how we as a team function and are happy together and for one another, when I see how we bring these principles to the field, how one runs for the other, then this is very special. That has not been the case so often. It was different 10 years ago. Then, we had more egoism within the team.”

Arsenal are looking to secure a Bayern Munich star, as manager Mikel Arteta adds long-term prospects to his squad.

The Gunners signed eight new players over the summer, bringing in Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal, Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie in defence, Christian Norgaard and Ebere Eze in midfield, and Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres in attack.

Arsenal chasing Bayern Munich wonderkid to compete in midfield

Despite having the likes of Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino and new buys Eze and Norgaard as options in midfield, Arteta has made commitments throughout his six seasons as manager in N5 to blood young talent in the centre of the park.

Arteta handed debuts to the two youngest Premier League stars ever in Nwaneri and Max Dowman, both Hale End playmakers who are expected to become fixtures of the Basque’s first team in seasons to come.

BILD’s Christian Falk, the Gunners are circling for 17-year-old Lennart Karl.

The German became the youngest Bayern Munich player to score in the Champions League last week, beating Jamal Musiala’s record with a strike against Club Brugge at the Allianz Arena, with calls for Julian Nagelsmann to call the teen up to the senior national set-up.

Sport Witness relays the report from the German outlet that claims that the Gunners are joined by the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea in the chase for the no.10.

Nwaneri has been used sparingly in North London this season, with Eze and Merino featuring more, and should Arsenal move for another teenager in a similar position, it could mean competition for places is even more intense – it seems unlikely, though, that Karl is a serious target.

FourFourTwo understands that Arsenal have been looking to step up their youth recruitment in the past 18 months, bringing in the likes of Tommy Setford and Victor Ozhianvuna to complement the raft of talents they have coming through Hale End.

Karl, however, is contracted until 2028 in Bavaria and won’t come cheaply, having already broken into Vincent Kompany’s set-up – while Arsenal will face steep competition to sign yet another potential world-beater in a position that they already have two.

With Michael Ballack as his representative, Chelsea may feel that they have the advantage in landing the German, too, with Arsenal needing to convince the player’s party that they can offer meaningful first-team action in a squad filled with young talents, many of whom have recently signed deals.

Karl is valued at €20 million by Transfermarkt. Arsenal return to Premier League action against Burnley next weekend.

Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund: Juergen Klinsmann talks strikers, big moments and evolution of game Jurgen Klinsmann (Photo by Lars Baron/Getty Images) Juergen Klinsmann enjoys a rare distinction of being part of Der Klassiker both as a player and a coach. He is one of the four managers to have played for Bayern Munich and coached the Bavarian elites. Croatian Niko Kovac, the current Borussia Dortmund coach plotting to disrupt Bayern Munichâ€s all-win record this season on Saturday, is also part of the unique club. Talking to TOI on Wednesday, an excited Klinsmann expressed his thoughts on the upcoming fixture, considered to be the biggest draw in the Bundesliga. With Dortmundâ€s Serhou Guirassy cleared to play, the German goal-scoring legend feels that his eyes will sway between the Guinean striker and Bayernâ€s in-form Harry Kane. “Well, I think these are the games that, as a striker, you wait for the whole year. You badly want to score in these matchups. So, obviously it doesnâ€t need extra motivation for any of the players when these two teams clash because itâ€s a big deal in Germany and for all the Bundesliga fans around the world.†Klinsmann obviously loves talking about strikers. “Kane, Guirassy, (Michael) Olise, (Karim) Adeyemi, all, Iâ€m sure, wait for such evenings. Days before, you kind of think through it and you wish you want to score. Immediately television and social media will showcase the moment around the world and thatâ€s pretty cool.†Scoring seems to come as naturally as breathing for Harry Kane, the English captain in Bayernâ€s forward lineup. He has already scored 21 goals for club and country. Guirassy, too, has 10 to his credit across all competitions. “I think games like that, you want to have somebody to stand out. You want to have somebody to put the stamp on the match. And when you have players of this calibre, then all us football fans want to wait for these moments. We want to see them kind of prove a point,†said the German goal-scoring legend. Klinsmann couldnâ€t help referring to his playing days but not in a glorifying nostalgic way. Accepting the evolution of the game, he said, “The video analysts and the coaching staff dissect your game so thoroughly that they know where the weaknesses of the opponents are, how to break them down. During my days, things werenâ€t that sophisticated. We were not so deeply prepared by video analysts about the opponents.†(Watch Bundesliga 2025-26 Bayern Munich vs. Borussia Dortmund on 18th October 2025 from 10 PM IST live on Sony Sports Ten 2 SD & HD.)

Harry Kane says his interest in returning to the Premier League has cooled and he is willing to open talks with Bayern Munich about a new contract.

Kane is halfway through the four-year deal he signed when joining from Tottenham Hotspur for £86.4m in the summer of 2023.

The 32-year-old has scored 103 goals in 106 appearances for the German club, helping them win the 2024-25 Bundesliga title – the first honour of his career.

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank has said he would like to see Kane return to England, where he needs 48 goals to eclipse Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League scoring record of 260.

But the England captain says he is no longer as keen on returning home as he once was, and would consider extending his stay in Bavaria.

“In terms of staying longer, I could definitely see that,” he said.

“I spoke openly a couple of weeks ago that I have not had those conversations with Bayern yet, but if they were to arise I would be willing to talk and have an honest conversation.

“Obviously it depends on how the next year or so goes and what we achieve together. Right now, I would say we are in a fantastic moment and I am not thinking about anything else.

“In terms of the Premier League, I don’t know. If you had asked me when I first left to go to Bayern, I would have said for sure I would come back.

“Now I have been there a couple of years I would probably say that has gone down a little bit, but I wouldn’t say I would never go back.

“What I have learned in my career is that different opportunities and different timings happen and things fall in place. Going back to my first point with Bayern right now I am fully all in with Bayern.”

Harry Kane says he is open to extending his stay at Bayern Munich and believes a return to the Premier League is no longer guaranteed.

The England captainâ€s deal expires in 2027 and suggestions of a £56.7m release clause that can be activated at the end of this season led to speculation over his future. Thomas Frank, the Tottenham manager, has said Kane would be welcomed back if he wanted to move.

That remains a distant prospect, even though coming back to England would give Kane an opportunity to get the 48 goals he needs to break the Premier Leagueâ€s scoring record. The 32-year-old is hungry for more success after winning the Bundesliga last season to end his wait for a trophy, and his views on playing in English football again have evolved in the two years since he left Spurs for Bayern.

“In terms of staying longer I could definitely see that,†Kane said. “I have not had those conversations with Bayern yet but if they were to arise I would be willing to talk and have an honest conversation. Obviously it depends on how the next year or so goes, what we achieve together. We are in a fantastic moment and I am not thinking about anything else.

“In terms of the Premier League, I donâ€t know. If you had asked me when I first left to go to Bayern, I would have said for sure I would come back. Now I have been there a couple of years I would probably say that has gone down a little bit, but I wouldnâ€t say I would never go back.

“I am fully all in with Bayern. If there was a conversation about extending then we will see, but I have still got this season and another season. It is not like I am in my last year, it is not like there is any panic. I am calm, I love the manager at Bayern and as long we are improving and I am improving then I am happy to see what we can achieve.â€

Kane has made a sensational start to the season, scoring 19 goals for club and country. But he knows that being crowned the best player in the world will require winning the Champions League with Bayern or the World Cup with England next summer.

“I would love to win the Ballon dâ€Or,†Kane said. “Essentially it is a team trophy that the best individual from that team wins, so it is going to be a Champions League winner or a World Cup winner … It would be an accumulation of doing something great individually and as a team. It would be almost the perfect season.â€

Kane considered whether he has become a better player at Bayern. His analysis was that he is “seeing the game at the highest level Iâ€ve ever hadâ€. It was interesting to note that Vincent Kompany, Bayernâ€s manager, talked about Kaneâ€s work out of possession after he scored twice against Chelsea last month.

“When you win a title maybe it could be easy to go the other way and be like: ‘OK Iâ€ve done what I wanted to achieve,â€â€ Kane said. “But itâ€s given me motivation to do more. My numbers are 11km a game, a lot of high‑speed running. Sometimes when Iâ€m watching the games back, Iâ€m more looking forward to watching tackles or one of my defensive actions than watching my goals back. I donâ€t know if that means Iâ€m getting a little bit bored of my goals or like the tackling part as well but itâ€s been enjoyable.

“I was interested in how I would feel after winning a trophy. It could have been easy to be a bit more relaxed. I pushed myself the other way, being even better, eating even cleaner, doing more gym.

“I do eat clean anyway. Itâ€s just whether the cheat meals after games are not so much, or when youâ€re out with the family not having as much ice cream. Small details, but at the highest level those make a big difference.â€

Kane is preparing for Englandâ€s friendly against Wales on Thursday and World Cup qualifier against Latvia next Tuesday. The focus has been on Thomas Tuchel leaving Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden out of his squad. Tuchel has said he wanted to reward the players who excelled in training and against Serbia last month.

“There are a lot of players who are different from past tournament squads,†Kane said. “But I think the boss has made it pretty clear that those players, itâ€s not like theyâ€re out of the squad for sure. A lot of them are maybe just coming back into form. Some of them, Jude especially, heâ€s not been fit, and just played one or two games. It is a big change, but thatâ€s not my decision. Thatâ€s the boss – he will feel the feeling amongst the players.â€

Kane urged England to maintain the standards set during the 5-0 win over Serbia. “The energy around the place was in a really good place,†he said. “Probably the best camp since Gareth [Southgate] left I would say was the September camp but now that is the standard.â€

England have added Manchester Cityâ€s Nico Oâ€Reilly to the squad after the Chelsea right-back Reece James withdrew with a minor injury. Declan Rice reported after going off in Arsenalâ€s game with a back injury.
