Lady Hornets capture Central Mountain Silver Bracket tournament gold

The Wellsboro Varsity Volleyball team took home a first place finish in the Silver Bracket of the Central Mountain tournament on Saturday, September 1.

“CM puts on a great tournament with teams from all over which creates various levels of competition,” said head coach Sharon Zuchowski. “After a long and very hot day, I am very pleased with what I saw and what they accomplished.”

In pool play the Lady Hornets swept Central Mountain 25-20 and 25-23. In game two they split with St. Marys 25-11 and 12-25. In their third game they fell to Canton 18-25 and 23-25.

In the Silver Bracket Wellsboro was matched up against NTL Large School Division rival Troy in the semi-finals. The Lady Hornets swept the Lady Trojans 25-15 and 25-16 to advance to the finals against Glendale. In the finals Wellsboro won 25-18 and 25-10.

Junior Caitlyn Callahan led Wellsboro with 43 kills and 13 aces on the afternoon. Senior Heidi Zuchowski had 18 kills, and sophomore Shiloh Duff pitched in with 8 kills. Junior Megan Starkweather had 29 assists, freshman Jordan Judlin had 21 assists and 8 aces, sophomore Kathryn Burnett had 13 assists, and senior Alaina Goetsch recorded 6 aces.

The Lady Hornets begin their regular season on Tuesday, September 4 on the road at Troy.

Lady Hornets top Central Mountain, 3-1

The Wellsboro Varsity Volleyball team beat Central Mountain 3-1 on Monday, October 9 to win their 8th straight game.

The Lady Hornets edged Central Mountain 25-21 in the first set and won 25-16 in the second. Central Mountain took the third 25-23 to force a fourth set, but Wellsboro won 25-21 for the win.

Junior Heidi Zuchowski led the Lady Hornets with 15 points, 2 aces, and 8 kills; senior Cheyenne Sherman had 10 kills, 9 digs, and 2 blocks; and sophomore Caitlyn Callahan recorded 8 kills and 6 blocks. Sophomore Megan Starkweather scored 8 points with an ace, senior Hannah Burnett had 9 digs, sophomore Ryann Adams made 8 digs,and senior Jillian Graver had 6 points and an ace.

Senior Brianne Keane had 32 assists, 6 points, 2 aces, and 2 blocks.

Wellsboro won the JV game 2-0 (25-10, 25-23) to improve to 15-1.

The win improves the Varsity team’s record to 14-2 (9-2 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action tonight as they host Athens.

Wellsboro’s Middle School team was also in action on the night and picked up a road win over Williamson. Wellsboro lost the first set 25-8 but rallied to win 25-17 and 15-11. Jordan Judlin had 16 good serves, 2 spikes, and 2 kills; Madaline Bordas 12 good serves and 2 spikes; and Emma Pietropola had 7 good serves and 2 spikes.

The young Lady Hornets are back in action on Wednesday, October 11 at home against Cowanesque Valley.
