The Knicks opened the preseason with a 99-84 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday afternoon as part of the NBA’s Abu Dhabi Games.
These exhibition matchups don’t mean much, but for the Knicks, it does present an opportunity to make a positive first impression on new head coach Mike Brown.
Two players who were able to do that: Mitchell Robinson and Miles McBride.
Robinson already looked in regular season form as he jumped into the starting five alongside Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Pacome Dadiet, and Karl-Anthony Towns.
The big man dominated the glass all day, reeling in a game-high 16 boards across his 18 minutes.
Brown called him the Defensive Player of the Game, and he also finished with seven points on 3-of-6 shooting.
“That’s what I’ve been doing the whole time I’ve been in New York,” Robinson said. “I’m just continuing doing what I was doing last year and the year before, it’s been the same mentality all along — just going hard to the glass.”

As expected, McBride didn’t get the start, but he was one of the first reserves to enter.
Playing alongside Jalen Brunson and newcomer Jordan Clarkson in a new three-guard look, the youngster came on late in the first quarter and immediately provided a spark.
He knocked down his first three shots for eight quick points.
McBride went on to lead the team with 12 points on five-of-seven shooting (2-for-4 from three) while also reeling in five rebounds, dishing a pair of assists, and picking up a game-best three steals across 21 minutes of action.
His plus-11 rating finished third on the team, only behind Ariel Hukporti and Landry Shamet.
“It’s the preseason, so we’re just trying to get one percent better every day,” McBride said. “I just wanted to come in today and make my presence felt out there — just looking to impact winning in any way that I can.”
It is just one preseason game, but it was certainly a strong start for two of New York’s key pieces.

A woman has filed a lawsuit against former NHL player Willie Mitchell and a resort in Tofino, B.C., alleging she was sexually assaulted by ex-defenceman while she was “extremely intoxicated.”
The plaintiff, who isn’t named in the lawsuit, says in a civil claim filed in British Columbia Supreme Court on Wednesday that she was employed as a server at Tofino Resort + Marina Inc. in September 2022.
The woman’s claim says the resort was hosting a fishing tournament and after finishing her shift she went to an adjoining pub, where she became “visibly impaired” by alcohol, leaving her with only “fragmented” memories of the evening of Sept. 11, 2022.
The lawsuit says Mitchell escorted her from the pub while she was wearing only one shoe and took her back to his home, where he allegedly “engaged in unprotected sexual activity” with the woman without “express or implied” consent.
The allegations in the lawsuit have not been tested or proven in court, and neither Mitchell nor the resort have filed responses in the case, while messages left for resort officials were not immediately returned.
The lawsuit says Mitchell was a company director at the resort up until February 2023.
Mitchell played 907 career NHL games with the New Jersey Devils, Minnesota Wild, Vancouver Canucks, Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings and Florida Panthers.
Sean Longstaff (Leeds)
A last-gasp Bournemouth equaliser on Saturday may have been painful for the Elland Road faithful but the performance of Sean Longstaff gives Daniel Farke and co much hope for the rest of the season.
In a standout display, the former Newcastle United man both scored and assisted in an English league game for just the second time in his career, after also doing so for Blackpool v Doncaster Rovers in August 2017 in League One, to give the hosts a share of the spoils.
On top of that, Longstaff also created seven goalscoring chances for team-mates, the most by any player in a top-flight game this season and the joint-most by a Leeds player on record (since 2003-04).
Igor Thiago (Brentford)
The post-Thomas Frank era at Brentford was never going to be easy, but under the tutelage of former set-piece coach Keith Andrews the Bees are finding their feet, with Saturday’s 3-1 win over Manchester United the highlight so far.
Igor Thiago was the star of the show at Gtech Community Stadium, becoming just the second player to score twice in the opening 20 minutes of a top-flight game against United, after Alexis Sanchez for Arsenal in October 2015.
The Brazilian, who has big Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo-shaped boots to fill, secured his double from three shots in the game, with the London side’s hitman netting four of Brentford’s nine goals in the Premier League this season.
Robin Roefs (Sunderland)
Sunderland’s superb start to their first Premier League campaign since 2016-17 continued at the weekend, courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest.
The visitors had goalkeeper Robin Roefs to thank with the Dutchman making six saves, a joint-high at the weekend, while he also created two goalscoring chances, with only one goalkeeper on record (Wayne Hennessey with three for Burnley v Manchester United in 2021) registering more in a Premier League game since 2003-04.
Overall, Roefs has now kept three clean sheets in six Premier League appearances this season, a haul only Newcastle United’s Nick Pope can better, with four, while his tally of 20 saves gives him a top-three ranking in the division.
And on that farm he had some… buckets?
As Knicks center Mitchell Robinson prepared this offseason for what will be his eighth NBA season, he didn’t just work on his hoops game.
He also worked on his coops game.
In an effort to eat healthier and drop some weight, the 27-year-old Robinson made an effort to eat healthier by learning the art of farming in Nashville.
“I started my own farm, so all of my stuff is legit fresh, organic, stuff like that, so kind of moving forward with that,” Robinson said. “Chickens, all kinds of stuff.”
Asked how he learned to farm, Robinson replied: ‘You gotta know people, they’ll teach you a lot.”
Farmer Robinson acknowledged that he did lose weight this offseason, saying he’s around the same weight he was last season, which he says is the right range for him to play at his best.
And that should go hand-in-hand with playing under new head coach Mike Brown, who likes to push the pace at a much faster rate than previous head coach Tom Thibodeau.
“I’m excited to play for him,” Robinson said of Brown. “I’ve been here going on eight years now, third coach. Just get in there and give the same energy I gave the other coaches. Hard work and keep it moving.”
“A lot of conditioning, getting up and down the court,” he later added about Brown’s coaching style. “Putting in a lot of new things that I’ve never seen before. It’s going to be a process, but I’m all for it.”
While injuries limited Robinson to just 17 regular season games last year, he made a big impact in the postseason, playing 18 playoff games and eventually moving into the starting lineup.
Robinson said he doesn’t care whether he starts or comes off the bench this season, and that he’s ready to adjust to playing with whomever he’s on the floor with.
“Same approach as last year,” Robinson said. “We had a lot of success last season, so we just come in with that mindset and see how [Brown] likes us to play and adjust to that.”
Robinson has established himself as one of the best offensive rebounders in the NBA, and his relentlessness on the glass makes him a huge asset for a Knicks team in search of an NBA championship.
And while it sounds like Robinson is ready to cook on the floor, don’t expect him to do much cooking in the kitchen.
“No,” Robinson replied when asked if he cooks the food his farm provides.
“Hell no.”
