Ron Washington, who missed more than half of the 2025 season after undergoing quadruple bypass heart surgery, will not be returning as manager of the Los Angeles Angels in 2026, he told The Athletic on Tuesday.

Interim manager Ray Montgomery also will not get the full-time manager role in 2026, a source confirmed to ESPN, as the Angels will search for their sixth manager in nine years.

Washington told The Athletic that general manager Perry Minasian told him that the team’s decision to not pick up his contract option was based on the team’s performance — the Angels went 36-38 prior to him leaving — rather than the manager’s health.

“You know, when you’re a competitor, and you’re in charge, none of that stuff comes into play,” Washington told The Athletic. “Sometimes you’ve got to make chicken salad out of chicken s—.

“I have to accept that. I can’t go back to argue with them to try and tell them different when they’ve made a decision. … We were starting to perform better.”

Washington, who turns 74 in April and was the oldest manager in the majors this past season, told The Athletic that he never had the opportunity to talk about the team’s decision with Angels owner Arte Moreno. He also said that he’d like to continue managing or join a team’s coaching staff.

The Angels finished with a 72-90 record, accounting for their 10th consecutive losing season. They’ve made the playoffs just once since 2009.

After Mike Scioscia stepped down at the end of the 2018 season, ending a 19-year run that included the franchise’s only World Series championship, the Angels went through Brad Ausmus, Joe Maddon and Phil Nevin as managers over a five-year stretch. None produced more than 77 wins.

Washington, the former Texas Rangers manager and highly regarded infield instructor, was brought in ahead of the 2024 season in hopes that he could mentor a young nucleus headlined by Zach Neto, Logan O’Hoppe, Nolan Schanuel and Jo Adell. However, the team finished with a franchise-record 99 losses.

The 2025 team showed some promise but wound up finishing last in the American League West for the second straight year, 25½ games out of first.

“I think I had the team going in the right direction, I really did,” Washington told The Athletic. “And it was just too bad that my health came into play. There’s nothing that I can do about that.

“It was my team. I think the team took on my personality. We were definitely showing that. In this business, this is the kind of stuff that happens to you. When everything goes not the way people wanted, you take the blame for it. And I’m OK.”

Washington last managed a game on June 19, when he left the Angels after experiencing shortness of breath and appearing fatigued during a four-game series against the New York Yankees.

He eventually underwent quadruple-bypass surgery but stressed last month that he was in good health and wanted to return as the Angels’ manager in 2026.

“What happened to me saved my life,” Washington said earlier this season, adding that he has quit smoking, changed his eating habits and is sleeping better.

Overall, Washington was 99-137 in two seasons with Los Angeles.

Montgomery’s option also will not be picked up. The rest of the Angels’ coaching staff also had 2026 options, but their status is not yet known.

Perry Minasian, who just finished his fifth season as the Angels’ general manager, is under contract through 2026, though the team has not made a formal announcement about his status.

Albert Pujols and Torii Hunter, two decorated former Angels who currently serve as special assistants with the team, are considered strong candidates to become the next manager — unless owner Arte Moreno seeks someone with more experience.

Washington was the winningest manager in Rangers history, compiling a 664-611 record from 2007 to 2014. He led them to their first two World Series appearances, in 2010 and 2011. After initially returning to the Athletics organization for the 2015 and 2016 campaigns, Washington joined the Atlanta Braves’ staff from 2017 to 2023 and was part of their 2021 World Series championship team.

The Los Angeles Angels have parted with manager Ron Washington, The Athletic’s Sam Blum reports.

Interim manager Ray Montgomery is also out, according to the report.

Washington, 73, took a medical leave on June 27 and later revealed he had undergone quadruple bypass surgery on his heart. Montgomery took over as interim manager for the rest of the season.

The Angels will go in a different direction in 2026. The status of general manager Perry Minasian moving forward isn’t clear, per the report.

The Angels made the moves after posting a 72-90 record.

They hired Washington in 2024 after parting with previous manager Phil Nevin. They finished 63-99 in Washington’s first year as manager and in last place in the AL West in both seasons with Washington leading the clubhouse.

Washington was 10 years removed from his previous managing job with the Texas Rangers when the Angels hired him. He’d since worked as a coach with the Oakland A’s and Atlanta Braves and was on staff when the Braves won the 2021 World Series. He’d previously led the Rangers to consecutive World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011.

The next Angels manager will be tasked with shifting the culture of a franchise that’s long languished in irrelevance. Despite a roster that’s featured Mike Trout for 15 seasons and Shohei Ohtani from 2018-23, the Angels haven’t made the postseason since 2014. Before that, their previous playoff appearance was in 2009.

The Angels have rarely been competitive during their playoff drought. They haven’t posted a winning record since 2015 and have finished in fourth or fifth place in the AL West in eight of the past 10 seasons.

Developing a winning culture, of course, will require a roster capable of winning. Whether that responsibility will lie with Minasian or someone else is unclear.

Bob Melvin, whose option for the 2026 season was picked up in July, has been fired as manager of the San Francisco Giants.

The Giants were very streaky in finishing 81-81 this season, teasing fans with playoff hopes with a 13-3 run from late August into early September that was followed by a 2-9 stretch Sept. 13-23 that dashed those hopes.

“After careful evaluation, we determined that making a change in leadership was in the best interest of the team,” said Buster Posey, the Giants’ president of baseball operations. “The last couple of months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not perform up to our standards. We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward.”

Melvin said after Sunday’s 4-0 victory against Colorado to conclude his second season that he had received no assurances about managing in 2026.

“Just looking to find a different voice that can take us in a different direction,” Posey said.

“It’s definitely not ideal but unfortunately we talked about it a lot what the standards are for the Giants and we have high standards,” Posey added. “And I hold myself to those same standards. I understand fully the position that I’m in now. My job and the team”s success is evaluated accordingly as well. You without a doubt hope that there can be consistency in these leadership positions. We’ve got to get back to a place where we’re getting in the playoffs, we’re making runs in playoffs. That’s what our fan base deserves, that’s what the city deserves.”

As Posey begins finalizing his list of candidates, one familiar name has come up as a possibility: the catcher’s former manager, Bruce Bochy. Bochy spent the last three seasons managing the Rangers, but the team said Monday night that he won’t return in that role, calling it a mutual decision. He has been offered a front-office role in an advisory capacity, the Rangers said.

San Francisco hasn’t made the playoffs nor had a winning record since finishing with a franchise-record 107 victories to edge the 106-win Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League West title in 2021.

Posey said there’s no timetable for making a hire — “I want to make sure we get it right” — nor suggested whether he would seek someone with prior managerial experience.

Players offered support for Melvin as the season ended.

“You know how I feel about BoMel, I loved him. He’s been my manager for I guess seven years,” said third baseman Matt Chapman, who also played for Melvin in Oakland. “I feel extremely grateful that I get to play for him and he’s the same guy every day. He’s been steady for us, he’s always honest with the players, he has our back. He’s done the best with what we’ve given him. The players, a lot of us didn’t play to probably our capabilities.”

Melvin, who turns 64 in October and has been a major league manager for 22 seasons, left the San Diego Padres after the 2023 season to return home to the Bay Area and manage the Giants — a job he always dreamed of doing as a former catcher with the organization from 1986 to 1988.

He was brought to San Francisco by Farhan Zaidi, the team’s former president of baseball operations. However, with Posey now in that role, the team felt compelled to make a change after struggling against division rivals Los Angeles (4-9) and San Diego (3-10) despite adding slugger Rafael Devers at the trade deadline.

Melvin went 161-163 in his two seasons in San Francisco.

A three-time Manager of the Year who has won the award in both leagues, Melvin has a career regular-season record of 1,678-1,588 with eight postseason appearances while guiding Arizona, Seattle, Oakland, San Diego and the Giants.

Bruce Bochyâ€s time managing the Texas Rangers has come to an end.

The Rangers and Bochy parted ways Monday, the team announced. The decision was mutual, according to the team’s statement. The Rangers said Bochy was offered a chance to remain with the organization as an adviser in the front office, though itâ€s unclear if he will do so.

“Bruce Bochy is one of the greatest managers in baseball history and he will forever hold a place in the hearts of Ranger fans after bringing home the first World Series title in franchise history in 2023,†Rangers president Chris Young said in a statement. “Boch brought class and respect to our club in his return to the dugout and we will always take pride in being part of his Hall of Fame career. We are grateful for everything he has given to the organization over the past few seasons and hopeful he can continue to impact the Rangers for many years to come.â€

Bochy signed a three-year deal with the Rangers when he was hired in October 2022, so his contract was due to expire this fall. His departure from the Rangers’ dugout wasn’t unexpected, as the 70-year-old manager had just finished his third season leading the team.

Only two years removed from a World Series victory, Bochy and the Rangers had a disappointing season after entering with playoff aspirations, ending with an 81-81 record and finishing third in the AL West.

That marked the second straight season that Texas missed the playoffs following the team’s World Series title in 2023, the first in franchise history, in Bochy’s first season at the helm. A combination of injuries and an unexpected drop-off in play from key contributors led to the team’s decline the past two seasons.

Bochy finishes with a 249-237 record with the organization, which marked his third managerial stop in Major League Baseball. He spent a dozen seasons with the San Diego Padres and 13 with the San Francisco Giants before he retired and then came back to lead the Rangers in 2023. Bochy is currently sixth on MLB’s all-time manager wins list, with 2,252, which is 1,479 shy of all-time leader Connie Mack. Bochy is one of six managers in MLB history to win at least four World Series titles, three of which came with the Giants.

The move to split with Bochy came just one day after the end of the regular season. There are already two open manager roles, as the Giants fired Bob Melvin and the Minnesota Twins dismissed Rocco Baldelli earlier Monday. It’s unclear at this time if Bochy wants to keep working as a manager in the league or if the Giants would be interested in bringing him back.

The San Francisco Giants are moving forward without manager Bob Melvin. The team announced Monday it fired Melvin after two years at the helm.

Melvin, 63, was originally hired ahead of the 2024 MLB season to get the Giants back on track after the team missed out on two consecutive postseasons. Despite investment from the front office, the Giants failed the end that streak under Melvin. The Giants finished in fourth place in the National League West in 2024 and third in the division in 2025.

Team president of baseball operations Buster Posey said Monday that the team failed to play up to its expectations this season, leading to Melvin’s firing.

“After careful evaluation, we determined that making a change in leadership was in the best interest of the team. The last couple of months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not perform up to our standards. We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward.â€

Posey also thanked Melvin for his “dedication, professionalism, and class.”

Melvin’s tenure as the team’s manager wasn’t a disaster. The veteran manager was nearly exactly .500 in his two seasons with the club. After going 80-82 last season, the Giants finished 81-81 in 2025. While average, that record wasn’t good enough for the Giants.

The move comes despite Posey picking up an option on Melvin’s contract in July. That option guaranteed Melvin’s deal through 2026. But the team faltered during that month, going 9-15 in July. That resulted in Posey selling players at the deadline.

The Giants briefly recovered enough to play their way back into playoff contention, but couldn’t maintain a high level of play. The team went 27-26 over the final two months of the regular season, which wasn’t enough to keep pace with the Cincinnati Reds and the collapsing New York Mets, who remained in playoff contention until the final day of the regular season.

With Melvin gone, Posey will be charged with picking the team’s next manager. Given the expectations set by Posey, that manager will be expected to win immediately in San Francisco.

Under Posey the Giants have shown a willingness to spend money in free agency to improve the club. The team brought in shortstop Willy Adames on a seven-year, $182 million deal last offseason and signed third baseman Matt Chapman to a $151 million extension at the end of 2024. Those moves, as well as the team’s early trade for Rafael Devers, show Posey’s desire to build a winner in San Francisco.

While the team will invest in talent, winning in the NL West won’t be easy. The Los Angeles Dodgers remain a perennial contender and the San Diego Padres are always a threat to make a blockbuster trade. The Giants have mostly operated as the third banana in the division in recent memory.

It will be up to Posey, and his new manager, to prove the Giants are capable of hanging with the other juggernauts in the NL West.

Manchester United have come to a big agreement, as they look to transform their season.

That’s according to a report in Italy, after the Red Devils fell to their third defeat of the Premier League season at the weekend in just their sixth game of the campaign.

The pressure is now increasing on Ruben Amorim, with Manchester United having failed to win back-to-back games under the Portuguese.

In sharp contrast to Amorim in England, Como are flying high in Serie A and looking to target Europe under Cesc Fabregas.

The Spaniard, ranked at no.21 in FourFourTwo’s list of the best managers in the world right now, is overseeing a revolution in Lombardy, with Italian outlet Corriere Como reporting that the club have identified Fabregas “as the symbol of the project”, adding that he has instilled “modern play, organisation and the development of talent” at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.

Now, the report states that United’s Joshua Zirkzee is next on the radar in a potential January transfer.

Zirkzee swapped Bologna for Old Trafford last summer, with FourFourTwo understanding that there was interest from Italian giants in bringing him back during the 2025 window – but Rasmus Hojlund was eventually jettisoned to Napoli, where he has started brightly under Antonio Conte.

Corriere Como offers conflicting information, stating that the Red Devils have “reached an agreement” with Como’s owners, the Hartono brothers, while also stating that Como have just “concrete interest” in the Dutchman.

FourFourTwo believes that Fabregas could well be on the shortlist of managers United look at to replace Amorim, should he be relieved of duties – but the former playmaker is not without a chequered history with the 20-time English champions.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea man has claimed that the club tried to sign him twice before – as a 15-year-old prior to his Gunners move, and over a decade later, when he was leaving Barcelona.

Fabregas has also confirmed his role in the Premier League’s infamous ‘Battle of the Buffet’, admitting in 2017 that he threw pizza at Sir Alex Ferguson after United ended Arsenal’s 49-game unbeaten run in the league in controversial fashion.

ATLANTA — Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker is unsure about his future with the Braves.

The 69-year-old Snitker, whose contract expires after this year, has been subjected to questions about whether he will retire following the season, his ninth as Atlanta’s manager and 49th with the organization.

The Braves are out of playoff contention for the first time since 2017. Snitker, who has been with the Braves organization in some capacity as a player, coach and manager since 1977, has been undecided about his retirement since he was asked about it for the first time this season on Sept. 10, when he said he was not “100% sure which direction I want to go.”

Snitker still did not have his mind made up as of Sunday’s season finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

“I’ve teetered on the fence (about retirement),” Snitker said. “I’ve never been through this before. I wasn’t sure how to navigate it. I’ve talked to a lot of people who have been through it who got some good advice. I’ve just tried to stay in the moment and focus on today … As we’re sitting here right now, I still feel good.”

Snitker said the club has not reached out to him about the future.

“It’s not their fault,” Snitker said. “I haven’t approached them. We’re (going to) talk this week (after the season). That’s kind of where I wanted it to go. That’s on me.”

Braves general manager and president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos said on Sept. 8 that Snitker will be a “Brave for life” but did not go into detail about the manager’s immediate future.

“(Snitker) will be part of this organization no matter what well past when I’m here,” Anthopoulos said. “He’s a Brave for life. (Coaching staff roles) are things we always address at the end of the year.”

Snitker, the 2021 World Series-winning manager, was encouraged by Atlanta’s play in the final month-plus of the season, which included a 10-game winning streak from Sept. 14 to Sept. 23.

“I think it’s been really encouraging,” Snitker said. “You just like to see what these guys do (as a whole). It’s been good how (those) guys have kept fighting.”

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth is to undergo heart surgery and will be away from the club for “a few weeks”.

Long-term assistant Richard Dobson will take over while 52-year-old Ainsworth recovers from the “routine” operation.

Ainsworth said the problem was identified by a routine League Managers’ Association (LMA) health check at the end of last season.

He took charge of the Gills’ 1-0 home defeat by Harrogate Town on Saturday which ended their unbeaten start to the season as they were overtaken by Swindon Town and Walsall.

Ainsworth, who previously managed Wycombe, QPR and Shrewsbury, said:, external “I went for the LMA health check in May and they found something with my heart.

“I’ve got to have heart surgery this week. It sounds dramatic, but it’s a routine thing they do.

“This has all been planned. Get behind Dobbo and the team, they will be stepping up. I’ll be off for a few weeks, and then I’ll be back.”

Chairman Brad Galinson added: “We’ve known for many weeks about Gareth’s upcoming surgery.

“When we appointed the best manager in League Two back in March, we also felt we were getting the best assistant manager in the league, so we have no doubt the team is in safe hands in Gareth’s absence.”
