The Wellsboro Varsity Volleyball team handed NTL Small School Division leader Northeast Bradford their first loss on the season on Tuesday, October 8.
Wellsboro edged out the Lady Panthers, 3-2.
Northeast Bradford won the first set 25-21, however the Lady Hornets took the next two sets, both 25-20, to take a 2-1 lead. NEB won a “what seemed like forever” 4th set 34-32, but the Lady Hornets regrouped to win the 5th set, 15-5.
Senior Lexi Urena led the Lady Hornets with 18 points (6 aces) and 12 kills, sophomore Madison Cruttenden scored 16 points and made 33 digs, and senior Paige Logsdon had 8 points, 5 kills, and 7 solo blocks.
Junior Taylor Main had 16 digs and 18 assists, sophomore Blake Eckart had 13 digs and 8 kills, and sophomore Ellie Largey added 12 assists. Main and junior Brooke Wheeler also had a solo and assisted block each.
“We went into this game knowing it was going to be tough,” head coach Darci Pollock said. “Our first set we started strong but couldn’t finish. Our defense played great all night, being led my Maddy. She was allowing our setters to have many options in the front row. We spread the ball using Paige, Lexi, and Blake, as each hitter has their own tempo. The fourth set felt never ending as it went 34-32. Both teams were playing with everything they had. Although we did not win the fourth set, I was confident my girls would push through the last set. We have had a few 5 set matches recently, which has been beneficial in helping us close out that last game. I am extremely proud of this team and the hard work they are putting in. We hope to continue the rest of our season with the same energy we had last night.”
Wellsboro swept the evening’s matches, winning the JV game 2-0 (25-19, 25-15) to improve to 11-4.
The Varsity win improves the Lady Hornets to 12-3 overall and 9-1 in the NTL Large School Division. The team is back in action on Thursday against Cowanesque Valley.

Williamsport swept Wellsboro 3-0 in non-league volleyball action on Saturday, September 14.
The loss was the Lady Hornets’ first of the season after starting out 6-0.
“We had a tough loss. We came out slow and had a hard time coming back from it,” said head coach Darci Pollock. “Williamsport moved the ball well and had strong hitters. We played with a new line up and made the most of it. We will be back at it on Monday with more focus and energy.”
Williamsport won the first set 25-13, took the second 25-21, then ended the match with a 25-20.
Junior Taylor Main had 10 points (3 aces), 7 digs and 3 assists, freshman Peyton Keane scored 5 points (aces) and sophomore
Ellie Largey had 3 points (2 aces) and 2 assists. Senior Paige Logsdon had 2 kills and 3 blocks, sophomore
Blake Eckart recorded 2 kills and made 8 digs, and sophomore Madison Cruttenden had 20 digs.
Freshman Adelyn Frantz also recorded a block.
Williamsport won the JV game 2-1. Wellsboro won the first set 25-23 before Williamsport rallied to win the second 25-11 and the third, 15-13.
Wellsboro (6-1, 5-0 NTL Large School Division) travels to Hughesville on Monday.
Two of England’s senior players acknowledge that fierce rivals Australia were “smarter” than them during their T20 World Cup defeat on Saturday.
Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali have admitted that England were thoroughly outplayed during their T20 World Cup defeat to Australia.
Having had to settle for a draw in a rain-hit match with Scotland earlier in the week, England were under pressure to deliver against their fierce rivals on Saturday.
However, Australia were ruthless with the bat in setting up victory in Barbados, compiling 201-7 before restricting their opponents to just 165-6 in their reply.
Australia reached 70-1 off the first five overs, Travis Head (34 off 18) and David Warner (39 off 16) setting the tone, and the big-hitting continued throughout the innings with 13 maximums being struck in total.
Jofra Archer (1-28) was England’s most economical bowler and it appeared to have kept his side in the match, as Phil Salt (37) and Buttler (42) put on 73 in seven overs.
Nevertheless, wickets then began to fall at regular intervals and the game was effectively up when Moeen (25) departed with England on 128-5, still requiring 74 runs from 26 balls.

What did Buttler, Moeen have to say?
Speaking to BBC Test Match Special, Buttler and Moeen both hinted that, while England must assess what went wrong, they need to think proactively about how to turn things around.
Buttler said: “I thought we were outplayed today by Australia. They played really well in the powerplay and put us under a lot of pressure straight away.
“We know the position we’re in. It’s exactly laid out for us how we need to go about it. We can review this game and move on and plan for the next one.”
Moeen added: “I just felt that Australia were better than us on the day in all three facets. They were smarter than us with the ball and used the conditions really well.
“We’ve just got to be a bit more precise and when we come on to bowl. You have to get in and bowl your ball straight away and try and make something happen and not hope something will happen. We need to defend when we need to defend and attack when we need to attack.”
What now for England?
Although England will back themselves to defeat Oman and Namibia in their remaining two fixtures, they will require help from elsewhere to finish in the top two of Group B.
Scotland already have a far superior net run-rate to England (0.736 to -1.8) and that will also need to be overturned as a bare minimum if Scotland defeat Oman on Sunday.
England are not back in action until they face the same opponents on Thursday, potentially facing a four-point deficit with two games to play, while Scotland’s concluding fixture is against Australia.
