The San Antonio Spurs are a major step closer to getting a new downtown home, after voters in Bexar County, Texas approved a plan Tuesday to allow officials to commit up to $311 million in venue taxes to help build a multipurpose arena.
County officials said just over 52% of voters supported the measure, which had considerable opposition from some lawmakers and other groups.
The Spurs have said they will commit at least $500 million toward construction of an arena, plus cover all overruns – which could be significant. They would also be paying rent at the new arena, and that money will help offset what is a proposed $489 million contribution from the city.
“We love this city, we love this county, and the county and the city love us back,” Peter J. Holt, the chairman of Spurs Sports and Entertainment. told reporters Tuesday night.
Another piece of the plan: The Spurs are promising that about $1.4 billion in private development around the new arena will happen. And a separate measure that also passed Tuesday could lead to more rodeos in San Antonio — with lawmakers now able to devote about $200 million for that purpose.

“We’re ready to do something really special that’s going to help the Spurs, it’s going to help the rodeo, it’s going to help all sectors of the community and it’s going to be right in the heart of our city,” Holt said. “This is something we deserve. Our fans deserve it. Our community deserves it. We’re going to believe and execute big things.”
The Spurs made a simple case to voters: venue taxes are primarily paid by visitors to the area through things like their hotel and rental car bills, will not cause any hike in property taxes for San Antonio residents and by state law can only be spent on things like arenas.
Still, polling done as recently as last month suggested it would be tough for the Spurs to get a win. And the city’s major, Gina Ortiz Jones, has said she wants more analysis about the plan, including the city’s contribution toward the project.
“We’re going to work together to get something special done,” Holt said.
There is no proposed timetable for construction. and Holt said the Spurs are “at the very beginning of the design stage.” The team’s lease at its current home, Frost Bank Center, runs out in 2032.
Graeme van Buuren, who signed a new contract earlier this week to remain at Gloucestershire until 2027, got under way with a cracking cover drive, bettered only by the one which took Bracey to 50, the wicketkeeper-batter raising his seasonal landmark in the process.
Van Buuren though didn’t stay long, bowled trying to cut one too close to him which cannoned off the inside edge, while Cornwell’s third wicket came courtesy of a poor umpiring decision, Jack Taylor adjudged caught behind, despite a chasm between bat and ball.
Bracey batted untroubled through until lunch but fell soon after the resumption as Gohar, switched to the Nursery End, found a fraction of turn to force a thin edge through to wicketkeeper Joe Cracknell.
Ajeet Singh Dale came and went before Marchant de Lange and Matt Taylor entertained with a brisk stand of 44 for the ninth wicket, the former clubbing one from leg-spinner Luke Hollman over the ropes and twice hitting Gohar back over his head.
Gohar gained revenge by having him stumped to complete a five-wicket haul, leading to Daz Ahmed, hampered by a side strain while bowling, coming in with a runner to play his maiden first-class innings. Cleary in considerable pain, he batted out two overs from Gohar before Matt Taylor hooked Cornwell down the throat of long leg to end the innings.
Middlesex enforced the follow-on and soon removed Charlesworth caught behind off Roland-Jones but Joe Phillips and Ollie Price, the latter looking more at ease than he had earlier in the day, batted through until tea without further mishap.
Only one further over was possible before the murky light sent the players off, giving Gloucestershire hope of batting out a draw on the final day.
The Montreal Canadiens will be playing their third preseason game tonight, and Martin St-Louis is pulling no punches. For the first time, heâ€s going to be icing his full projected top six, his top defensive pairing, starter Samuel Montembeault, and Jacob Fowler.
That means that on Thursday night, against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kirby Dach is going to see his first real action since sustaining yet another knee injury in February. There were rumours of setbacks this summer, and then, when camp started, he only took part in one of the three scrimmages, which of course prompted questions from the media. The coach said that there was a plan and he was sticking to it, before adding that Dach would see some preseason action.

Canadiens: Slafkovsky Is Playing Big
Where Are The Canadiens In The Power Rankings?
Asked what he thought about the big center so far at Camp, the pilot explained:
I think heâ€s really involved and intense. Now itâ€s time to play the game tonight, take one shift at a time, and make the plays the game calls for. Please get back into the swing of things, but weâ€ll continue to evaluate and stick to the plan we have for him. […] I wouldnâ€t call it a leash. I think Dacher is in a better place. He did things differently this summer, and I think heâ€s further along. So I think he will be more ready to get going right away.

Turns out itâ€s time for that action now. While the bench boss said Dach was penciled in as the second-line center this season, he still needs to see what the Albertan center can offer and if some chemistry can bloom between him, Patrik Laine, and Ivan Demidov. Needless to say, everyone will be keeping an eye on that line when the puck drops on Thursday night.
Meanwhile, the Leafs have opted for a lineup that doesnâ€t include any of their marquee names, such as Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and Morgan Rielly. However, they are bringing along promising prospects Easton Cowan and Matias Maccelli, who might find their way into a top-six role. Former Hab Max Domi, whoâ€s dealing with a lower-body injury, wonâ€t be part of the roster, but there will be one former Canadien: Micheal Pezzetta. Cedric Pare, who injured Laine last year, will not be in the lineup.
As for the bottom of the Canadiens’ lineup, it will include two interesting young lines: Filip Mesar, Vinzenz Rohrer, and Joshua Roy will be skating together, while Florian Xhekaj will center Jared Davidson and Luke Tuch. It will be another opportunity for these young players to showcase their abilities.
On the blueline, David Reinbacher, who had a tough outing Tuesday, will be paired with Kaiden Guhle while Lane Hutson has a day off. Ryan Oâ€Rourke and Nate Clurman will complete the defense corps.
It will be interesting to see if the Cola Caufield, Nick Suzuki, and Juraj Slafkovsky line can perform as well as they did on Tuesday night. At practice on Thursday morning, Slafkovsky was wearing a full cage following the skate to the face he took in the game against the Philadelphia Flyers.
The puck drop is set for 7:00 PM, and this is the second-to-last home exhibition game. On Saturday, the Canadiens will face the Leafs again, this time in Toronto, before taking on the Ottawa Senators on September 30 in Quebec City and playing them again in Montreal on October 4.

Ahead of the transfer deadline earlier this month, Spurs allowed surplus-to-requirements winger Manor Solomon to join Villarreal on a season-long loan.

This is because unlike English football in which the rules prohibit players from competing in matches against their parent clubs, UEFA competition allows it.
According to UEFA rules, a loan player is eligible to face their parent club in European competition as long as the loan agreement doesn’t include a clause preventing it and the host club has the player registered and cleared to play.

Solomon is included in Villarreal’s ‘List A’ squad for the league phase, as is ex-Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey.
The 26-year-old Israeli winger was an unused substitute at the weekend as Villarreal were beaten by Atletico Madrid.
In Test cricket, play cannot start, is immediately suspended, or cannot restart if the on-field umpires agree the light conditions are “dangerous or unreasonable”.
That wording comes from section 2.8 of the International Cricket Council’s Test match playing conditions, which states the decision on whether lighting is unsafe is solely down to the umpires, following consultation with the ICC match referee.
Umpires are allowed to use light meters, which must be supplied by the ICC, as a guideline to determine whether light is fit for play or is improving or deteriorating. Light meters must be uniformly calibrated.
When natural light has worsened to a level deemed unfit for play, the umpires will authorise the ‘ground authority’ – those responsible for hosting the match – to use any available artificial lighting so play is able to continue in acceptable conditions.
Should artificial lighting at the ground not work, rules on natural lighting and weather will apply.
For day/night Test matches, the home cricket board will decide the latest times at which the floodlights are to be switched on prior to the start of a day’s play, and must inform the match referee.
Once play is suspended, it is the responsibility of the match umpires to continue to monitor conditions.
Thanks to Terry in Hull for the question.
