Pakistan vs Sri Lanka: Pakistan has defeated Sri Lanka in their Super Fours encounter to take a massive step towards a place in the final and a third match against India in the Asia Cup 2025.
Tonightâ€s Pakistan vs Sri Lanka game was Match 15 of the ACC Asia Cup 2025. This was also both of these teams†second match of the Super Fours round. The game was played in the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, as Pakistan won the toss and decided to bowl first.
Pakistan vs Sri Lanka: Pakistan Thrashes Sri Lanka In Super Fours
The Lankan Lions failed to establish a strong start to their inning. Opener Kamindu Mendis was dismissed on the second ball of the first over for a duck by Shaheen Afridi. The other opener, Pathum Nissanka, became Afridiâ€s second wicket of the day in the third over.
And then, in the last over of the powerplay, even Kusal Perera got out. So while Sri Lanka made a healthy 53 runs in the first six overs, they also lost three wickets.
Regular wickets never stopped falling. Captain Charith Asalanka was out after scoring 20 off 19, and Dasun Shanaka was dismissed on the very next ball for a golden duck to bring the score down to 58/5 in eight overs.
However, while wickets still kept falling, Kamindu Mendis took charge of stabilising the innings from this point. So while Wanindu Hasaranga made 15 off 13, and Chamika Karunaratne made 17 off 21, Mendis stood firm at one end. He scored a half-century and took his team past the 100-run mark.
By the time Kamindu Mendis got out in the 19th over at the hands of Shaheen Afridi, he had scored 50 off 44 and taken Sri Lanka to 123/7. The innings ended at a below-par yet respectable score of 133/8 in 20 overs.
Shaheen Afridi was by far the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan, bowling a four-over spell of 3/28 and taking three massive wickets.
The Pakistan innings, in contrast to that of the Lankan Lions, got off to a brilliant start. The opening pair of Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman scored 43 runs without losing any wickets in the first five overs.
But in the final over of the powerplay, both openers would depart. While Farhan played a solid inning of 24 off 15, Zaman played the supporting role, scoring 17 off 19.
Over the next three overs, Sain Ayub and captain Salman Ali Agha would be out for cheap, with Ayub making two and Agha scoring five. At 57/4 in the fifth over, the Men in Green looked in serious trouble. However, at this point, all-rounder Hussain Talat took charge of buckling down, throwing down the anchor, and taking the match home.
First with Mohammad Haris (13 off 11), and then with Mohammad Nawaz (30* off 24), Talat built slow and safe partnerships to ensure that Pakistan chased the small target down with ease. Having scored 23 off 30, Hussain Talat, along with Mohammad Nawaz, took Pakistan to the target in 18 overs, winning the match for their team by five wickets and with 12 balls to spare.
With a win in this Pakistan vs Sri Lanka game, the Pakistan Cricket Team has taken a step towards a place in the final. After a defeat against India in their first Super Fours game, a win here means that another win against Bangladesh would ensure a place in the final for them, which will most likely be a third India vs Pakistan confrontation in the Asia Cup 2025.
On the other hand, this is Sri Lankaâ€s second loss in the Super Fours. They are all but out of the race for the final. Their miniscule hopes will only stay alive if they are to beat the mighty India in their last game of this round.

Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets in a high-stakes Super 4 clash at the Asia Cup on Tuesday, keeping their tournament hopes alive. (ACC Photo) NEW DELHI: Pakistan survived a fiery spell from Wanindu Hasaranga to edge past Sri Lanka by five wickets in a high-stakes Super 4 clash at the Asia Cup on Tuesday, keeping their tournament hopes alive. Chasing a modest 134, Pakistan stumbled at times but ultimately finished at 138 for five. The conditions were tricky for batting, yet Pakistanâ€s openers attacked from the outset. Sahibzada Farhan (24) compensated for a slow start from Fakhar Zaman (17 off 19 balls), launching some aggressive shots, including a 6, 6, 4 sequence off pacer Nuwan Thushara.Maheesh Theekshana (2/24) struck in the sixth over, dismissing Farhan and soon after Zaman, who had earlier been struck on the helmet by Dushmantha Chameera. Hasaranga (2/27) then took charge, claiming Saim Ayub and skipper Salman Agha, including a stunning ground-level catch at mid-off. His delivery that pinned back Ayubâ€s stump was a perfect example of subtle seam movement. In both dismissals, Hasaranga mimicked Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmedâ€s hands-on-chest celebration, in retaliation for earlier banter. At 80 for five, the match was delicately poised, with Pakistan still needing 54 runs. Hussain Talat (32*, 30 balls) and Mohammad Nawaz (38*, 24 balls) calmly guided the chase, sealing a tense victory with two overs to spare.Earlier, Pakistanâ€s pacers had troubled the Sri Lankan lineup despite Kamindu Mendis†elegant 50, restricting them to 133 for eight. Sri Lanka suffered an early collapse, losing in-form Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka cheaply. Shaheen Shah Afridi (3/28) struck first, trapping Mendis and then Nissanka, with Talat and wicketkeeper Haris completing the dismissals.Skipper Charith Asalanka and Kusal Perera attempted a mini-recovery with a 25-run partnership, but Perera was soon caught off Faheem Ashrafâ€s well-judged diving effort. In the eighth over, Talat and Rauf removed Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka in successive deliveries, leaving Sri Lanka reeling at 58 for five.Mendis†determined fifty and a 43-run partnership with Chamika Karunaratne pushed Sri Lanka past 100, but it wasnâ€t enough to challenge Pakistan, who held their nerve under pressure to secure a crucial win.
Pakistan boosted their hopes of reaching the Asia Cup final by edging to a five-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi.
After their disappointing and controversial defeats by rivals India, Pakistan slipped to 80-5 in pursuit of 134 before a partnership of 58 between Hussain Talat and Mohammad Nawaz rescued them.
Needing 46 from 40 balls, Nawaz hit Wanindu Hasaranga, who had 2-5 after his first two overs, for back-to-back boundaries and when the leg-spinner returned to bowl the 17th over Talat struck another two fours.
That swung the equation from 26 runs needed from 24 balls, to 14 from 18, and left-hander Nawaz added three more sixes to seal victory with two overs to spare.
Nawaz finished 38 not out, with Talat unbeaten on 32.
While Pakistan would not have been eliminated with defeat, they would have needed a series of other results to go their way – the situation now facing Sri Lanka.
They had earlier done well to restrict Sri Lanka to 133-8, with left-armer Shaheen Afridi taking 3-28.
Sri Lanka took 53 runs from the powerplay but lost three wickets in doing so and were 58-5 when Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka fell in consecutive deliveries in the eighth over.
Kamindu Mendis led a recovery with 50 but he was pinned in front in the penultimate over by Shaheen – who had earlier dismissed Kusal Mendis with the second ball of the match – denying Sri Lanka a big finish.
