South Africa moved up to second in the Women’s World Cup table with a comprehensive 10-wicket win over Sri Lanka in a rain-shortened game in Colombo.

Set a Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) adjusted target of 121 to win in 20 overs, the Proteas cruised to victory inside 15 overs with captain Laura Wolvaardt hitting a superb 60 not out from 47 balls.

The classy right-hander shared an unbroken opening stand of 125 with Tazmin Brits, who hit the winning runs with a six to finish unbeaten on 55 from 42.

South Africa’s fourth straight win moves them above of England and just one point behind leaders Australia.

A lengthy downpour 12 overs into the match had looked set to result in a fourth washout at R Premadasa Stadium but the rain stopped just in time for a 20-over contest to take place.

Sri Lanka, who were 46-2 when the players were forced off, battled up to 105-7 but even after the DLS boost, it never threatened to really challenge South Africa.

Opener Vishmi Gunaratne was stretched off before the rain after a shy at the stumps struck her on the inside of the knee as she sprinted through for a quick single and forced her to retire hurt.

But no serious damage was done and she came in after the rain break to top-score for the tournament co-hosts with 34 from 33 balls.

Left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba took 3-30 for South Africa, with seamer Masabata Klaas claiming 2-18 before the rain.

Defeat leaves Sri Lanka winless and, with just two games left to play, their hopes of reaching the semi-finals are increasingly slim.

Women's World Cup 2025: Nat Sciver-Brunt's record ton, Sophie Ecclestone's heroics power England to 89-run win over Sri LankaEngland’s Sophie Ecclestone celebrates the wicket of Sri Lanka’s Hasini Perera (AP Photo/Eranga Jayawardena) England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt scored her fifth Women’s World Cup century while Sophie Ecclestone delivered an outstanding bowling performance, leading England to an 89-run win over Sri Lanka on Saturday.Sciver-Brunt’s impressive 117 runs from 117 balls, including nine fours and two sixes, helped England reach 253/9. Ecclestone then secured 4/17 as Sri Lanka was dismissed for 164 runs in 45.4 overs.England now leads the eight-team standings with six points after winning all three matches, moving ahead of defending champions Australia who have five points.Sciver-Brunt, who was dropped early at three runs by Udeshika Prabodhani, made the most of her chance to score her tenth ODI century and a record fifth in Women’s World Cups.Sri Lanka’s chase faced an early setback when captain Chamari Athapaththu retired hurt with seven runs in the sixth over due to cramps and had to leave the field on a stretcher.Hasini Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama formed a promising 58-run partnership, reaching 95/1 before Ecclestone initiated a collapse.Ecclestone’s exceptional spin bowling caused Sri Lanka to lose three wickets for just eight runs in four overs.Ecclestone dismissed Perera, who was caught by Alice Capsey, followed by Samarawickrama’s wicket with Lauren Bell taking the catch. She then bowled out Dilhari for four runs, leaving Sri Lanka at 103/4 at the halfway mark.Athapaththu returned to bat but quickly became Ecclestone’s fourth victim, bowled through the gate by a sharply turning delivery.Sciver-Brunt contributed with the ball as well, taking 2/25 in five overs, while Charlie Dean secured 2/47 in nine overs.Sri Lanka’s left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera, who had previously taken four wickets against India, maintained her form with 3/33, including a crucial double-wicket maiden over.Off-spinner Kavisha Dilhari supported well with 1/34 from eight overs, but Sciver-Brunt remained steady despite the regular fall of wickets.England’s innings concluded with Sciver-Brunt’s dismissal on the second-to-last ball, after she helped add 49 runs in the final five overs.England’s innings started poorly, losing two early wickets before Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight stabilized with a 60-run partnership from 74 balls.Knight’s innings ended at 29 runs from 47 balls after a late review confirmed a glove touch on a reverse sweep attempt.Inoka’s impressive 35th over saw her dismiss both Emma Lamb and Alice Capsey, with Lamb bowled behind her legs and Capsey stumped by wicketkeeper Anushka Sanjeewani.Sophia Dunkley scored 18 runs from 30 balls before being caught and bowled by Dilhari, as England lost three wickets for 34 runs between overs 30 and 40.The scoring rate dropped below four runs per over until Charlie Dean hit a reverse sweep to end a seven-over period without boundaries.

England remain unbeaten in the Women’s World Cup after Nat Sciver-Brunt’s sensational century and a remarkable spell of 4-17 from Sophie Ecclestone set up a crushing 89-run win over Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Having put England in to bat, Sri Lanka were left to rue dropping Sciver-Brunt on three, as she punished them with a run-a-ball 117 in England’s competitive 253-9.

The game was delicately poised with England 179-6 after 40 overs, but the captain timed her acceleration to perfection with 49 runs coming from the last five.

In reply, Sri Lanka’s captain and key batter Chamari Athapaththu retired hurt early in their innings, but fellow opener Hasini Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama led a promising recovery to 95-1.

But the co-hosts’ lack of batting depth cost them, despite Athapaththu’s return to the crease before she fell for 15, and they finished 164 all out in the 46th over, Ecclestone’s often-unplayable spell of turn and bounce doing the damage.

England’s third win in a row puts them top of the eight-team table, one point above defending champions Australia.

Earlier, Sciver-Brunt played a lone hand as the rest of England’s top order made promising starts but were unable to capitalise, with opener Tammy Beaumont’s 32 the next-highest contribution.

Amy Jones was run out for 11 and Beaumont was caught in the covers, before Sciver-Brunt and former captain Heather Knight consolidated with a patient stand of 60.

Knight was caught sweeping for 29 and England suffered another middle-order wobble to spin, including the loss of Emma Lamb and Alice Capsey to Inoka Ranaweera in the 35th over.

The discipline of Dean stabilised England again as she added 38 for the seventh wicket with Sciver-Brunt, which allowed the skipper to kick on at the death and ensure they had set a winning score.

England will look to maintain their winning run against Pakistan, also in Colombo, on Wednesday.

Although fixtures against Sri Lanka and Pakistan should be straightforward for England as they look to continue their winning streak, they could prove decisive with back-to-back matches against India and Australia to come.

England thrashed South Africa in what could have been a tricky opener, avoided a scare against Bangladesh and now have a golden opportunity to make sure they go into those games against the pre-tournament favourites unbeaten.

But they will have to contend with more spin-friendly conditions in Colombo on Saturday, with opener Tammy Beaumont saying the nature of the pitches is reducing the gulf between teams.

“Every game in this World Cup is big. Bangladesh played so well against us and Sri Lanka will be a challenge in home conditions,” she told BBC Sport.

“The conditions are bringing all the teams into it, so it’s important we have to keep playing well.

“It certainly feels like the fixtures have worked quite well for us, so hopefully we can keep building that momentum and it will be all guns blazing by the time we get to Indore.”

The surface in Indore is likely to be the most batter-friendly that England will experience, with Australia’s 326 there against New Zealand the highest total of this World Cup.

While England’s batters struggled against spin against Bangladesh in Guwahati, they are not alone.

Australia’s extraordinary batting depth saved them from what would have been a mind-blowing defeat by Pakistan, recovering from 76-7 to post 221-9 in Colombo, but England have also proved they have a well-rounded attack for the surfaces.

Namibia and Zimbabwe have booked their places at the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup after reaching the final of the African qualifying tournament in Harare.

Namibia beat Tanzania by 63 runs in their semi-final to reach a fourth successive edition of the finals.

Hosts Zimbabwe then cruised to a seven-wicket victory over Kenya to qualify for the first time since 2022.

Kenya won the toss and elected to bat first, and ended on 122-6 thanks largely to Rakep Patel’s innings of 65 from 47 balls.

Brian Bennett top scored with 51 off 25 as the Chevrons chased down their target with five overs to spare.

Namibia and Zimbabwe will meet in the tournament final on Saturday, with both sides knowing they will travel to India and Sri Lanka next year.

In the opening match earlier on Thursday, Namibia had slipped to 41-4 against Tanzania but a partnership of 88 runs between captain Gerhard Erasmus (55 off 41) and JJ Smit (61 not out off 43) helped the Eagles post 174-6.

All-rounder Smit then took 3-16 and Ben Shikongo recorded figures of 3-21 to help restrict the East Africans to 111-8 in reply.

Namibia beat the Netherlands, Ireland and Scotland on their T20 World Cup debut in the UAE and Oman in 2021 before exiting in the Super 12s.

The side, however, failed to get past the initial group stage at the 2022 and 2024 editions of the tournament.

Twenty nations will contest next year’s World Cup which will be held from 7 February to 8 March.

The Indian Womens Cricket Team have started their ICC Womens World Cup 2025 campaign in style with a decisive win over Sri Lanka in a rain-affected match.

The India Women vs Sri Lanka Women game was Match 1 of the Womens World Cup 2025 and was played in Guwahatiâ€s Barsapara Stadium. Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl first.

IND W vs SL W: India Beat Lanka In Womens World Cup Match 1

India did not get off to the best start to their inning, as veteran batter Smriti Mandhana got out in the fourth over after scoring eight runs. However, an early wicket was followed by a solid partnership between opener Pratika Rawal and incoming batter Harleen Deol. The two batted for the next 16 overs together, making 67 runs together.

At the 10-over mark, Indiaâ€s score was 43/1. But then, the match was halted due to rain. After about an hour of play was lost, the teams returned to the pitch, and the match continued.

By the time Rawal was dismissed for 37 off 59 in the 19th over, the teamâ€s score was 81/2. Deol played a valiant inning of 48 off 64 before getting out in the 26th over. However, this over would end up being a disaster for the India Women, as spinner Inoka Ranaweera would take three wickets in the 26th.

On the very next ball after Deolâ€s wicket, Jemimah Rodrigues would be bowled for a golden duck. And before the over ended, captain Harmanpreet Kaur would depart for 21 off 19.

Now in deep trouble at 121/5, the Indian Womens Cricket Team needed a saviour. But before that, the collapse would continue, as wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh would return to the pavilion in the 27th over.

The Indian middle order had to mount a rescue. This responsibility fell on the shoulders of Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur. The two women would bat for over 16 overs together and build a 103-run partnership in that time. While Deepti would make a run-a-ball 53, Amanjot made 57 off 56.

On the back of half-centuries by the two all-rounders, India crossed the 200-run mark. Due to the rain, the match was shortened by three overs per inning. So, at the end of the allotted 47 overs, India Women made 269 runs while losing eight wickets. This was a solid score, considering how the inning nearly collapsed midway through. Ranaweera, with her spell of 4/46, was the clear standout for Sri Lanka Women.

Due to DLS calculations, Sri Lanka had a target of 271 runs in 47 overs. They got off to a decent start to their inning. The opening partnership made 30 runs within seven overs before opener Hasini Perera got out for 14 of 20.

The second-wicket partnership of Harshita Samarawickrama and captain Chamari Athapaththu was worth 52 runs. By the time the skipper got out for 43 off 47, the Sri Lankan score was 82/2 at the end of 15 overs. However, from this point, the Lankan Lionesses failed to stitch together any decent partnerships.

Samarawickrama got out in the 23rd, Vishmi Gunaratne in the 24th, and Kavisha Dilhari in the 27th. At this point, the score was 130/5. However, while India saw their middle order fight back from a similar point, no such fight came from the Sri Lankan batters.

Wicketkeeper Anushka Sanjeewani made six runs, Nilakshi de Silva made a valiant 35, and the lower order collapsed. The Sri Lankan innings ended in the 46th over as the team got all out for 211.

Deepti Sharma, who scored a half-century with the bat, was also the best-performing bowler for India Women, bowling a 10-over spell of 3/54. So naturally, she was named the Player of the Match as the Women in Blue won the match by 59 runs via the DLS method.

With the win in this IND W vs SL W match, the hosts have raced to the top of the table in the ICC Womenâ€s World Cup 2025.

Women's ODI World Cup: Deepti Sharma leads India to 59-run win over Sri Lanka in openerThe official attendance of 22,843 on Sunday was a record at any league match of an ICC Womenâ€s World Cup game, breaking the attendance of 15935 set at the 2024 T20 World Cup game between India and Pakistan in Dubai. (PTI Photo) GUWAHATI: Deepti Sharma starred with an all-round show as India recovered from a middle order collapse to first set Sri Lanka a 271-run target and then skittle the Islanders to 211 with eight balls to spare for a 59-run win in their 2025 ICC Womenâ€s ODI World Cup opener here at Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.Sri Lanka had a steady start to their chase as they raced to 80 runs in the 15th over losing opener Hasini Perera to young pacer Kranti Gaud. However, it was Sharma who castled a dangerous-looking Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu (43 off 47 balls) in the last ball of the 15th over to put the brakes on. She later accounted for Kavisha Dilhari (15) and Anushka Sanjeewani (6) to complete her match figures with 3/54 from 10 overs.Sharma got able support from her tweak colleagues Sneh Rana (2/32) and Shree Charani (2/37) in the middle overs as together they tightened the noose around the Islanders†chase with seven wickets among them. Medium pacer Amanjot Kaur and Pratika Rawal took a wicket apiece.No. 6 Nilakshika da Silva tried to break the shackles with a 29-ball 35 — studded four boundaries and a maximum — but Rana dismantled her stumps to virtually end Sri Lankaâ€s hopes of pulling off a memorable win.Earlier, the weather and the course of first innings were both stop-start affairs. However, neither proved a complete spoilsport.Indian innings swayed from a steady start to a middle-over collapse and finally ended with a flourish. Amanjot (57 off 56 balls) and Sharma (53 off 53 balls) shared a 103-run stand for the seventh wicket with some late fireworks from Rana (28 off 15) helping India post 269/8 from 47 overs after Sri Lanka opted to bowl first.Rana played a vital cameo with two fours and as many sixes to take India past the 250-run mark, which looked far off at one point. Indiaâ€s final score was adjusted to 270 as per the DLS method. It drizzled thrice during the first innings. Twice the rain stopped the proceedings. First, a one-and-a-half-hour stoppage after India reached 43/1 in 10 overs and then a brief eight-minute interruption at the end of 40th over. A passing shower in the 43rd over finally didnâ€t impede the play but the match was reduced to a 47-over-per-side affair.In-form Smriti Mandhana departed trying to clear the off-side early on in the powerplay but ended up slicing it to deep cover.Harleen Deol joined opener Pratika Rawal to steady the ship with a 67-run stand for the second wicket. Rawal departed to Inoka Ranaweera holing out at deep mid-wicket but it was Deolâ€s soft dismissal to the left-arm Lankan spinner which sparked a middle order collapse as the Indians went down from 120/2 to 124/6 in two overs.Ranaweera returned Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues and India captain Harmanpreet Kaur in the 26th over and was on a hat-trick as Rodrigues departed with a golden duck. Next over, captain Athapaththu scalped Richa Ghosh as the wicketkeeper-batter returned an easy catch to cover point. As the Indian innings looked to implode against the Islanders, Sharma and Kaur held fort with aplomb. They scored at more than run a ball as the Sri Lankans let go an opportunity of finishing the Indian innings to a below-par score with sloppy bowling and fielding. Without taking away anything from Amanjot, she was given three lives by the Lankans.Record attendance: The official attendance of 22,843 on Sunday was a record at any league match of an ICC Womenâ€s World Cup game, breaking the attendance of 15935 set at the 2024 T20 World Cup game between India and Pakistan in Dubai.

India staged a brilliant comeback after a middle-order collapse to beat Sri Lanka by 59 runs in a rain-affected opening match of the Women’s World Cup in Guwahati.

The hosts lost four wickets for four runs in the space of 11 balls, including three in the 26th over for spinner Inoka Ranaweera, which saw them slip to 124-6.

But Amanjot Kaur and Deepti Sharma produced a match-winning partnership of 103 for the seventh wicket as Sri Lanka were unable to maintain their initial discipline in the field, with the former dropped four times on her way to 57.

Sneh Rana added some late impetus with 28 from 15 balls and Sharma fell for 53 from the last ball of the innings as India recovered to post a competitive 269-8 from 47 overs, with three overs lost from rain delays.

That saw Sri Lanka’s target revised to 271 from the same amount of overs, and they made a promising start by reaching 82-1 but skipper Chamari Athapaththu’s dismissal for 43 at the end of the 15th over stalled their progress.

Athapaththu’s second-wicket stand of 52 with Harshitha Samarawickrama kept the visitors in the game, but they lacked India’s batting depth and could not recover from a slump to 140-6 and they were eventually bowled out for 211 in the 46th over.

Sharma added figures of 3-54 to her half-century as India entertained a lively crowd of 22,843 – a record for a Women’s World Cup group game – while fellow spinners Sneh Rana and Shree Charani took 2-32 and 2-37 respectively.

The tournament continues with defending champions Australia taking on New Zealand in Indore on Wednesday, while England start their campaign against South Africa on Friday.
