In a shocking turn of events, two Australian womenâ€s cricketers were allegedly molested by a man named Aqeel Khan in Indore en route to their walk to a cafe. The police have arrested the accused, who also has a prior criminal record.

The Australian womenâ€s team is currently in Indore, where they played England on Wednesday and will play South Africa on Saturday for their last league stage match. They are staying at the Radisson Blu Hotel.

According to a PTI, the incident happened on Thursday morningat Khajrana Roadwhen two Australian womenâ€s team players were going from their hotel to a cafe.

In the aftermath of the incident, the duo immediately sent an SOS notification, and the security personnel were quick to arrive at the scene.

The Australian teamâ€s security manager then promptly filed a complaint at the MIG police station by Thursday evening. The Indore police took the case as a priority and proceeded to track down the security video cameras of the area where the incident happened.

As per PTI, Himani Mishra, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Indore, met the two Aussie players, registered their statements, and filed the FIR against the said man under Section 74 (use of criminal force to outrage a womanâ€s modesty) and Section 78 (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The accused was quickly identified through the security video footage. He was on a bike, and the police tracked him down through his bikeâ€s number plate. The police identified him as Aqeel Khan.

Sub-Inspector Nidhi Raghuvanshi revealed some of the details of the incident—that a man allegedly touched one of the Australian women cricketers inappropriately while riding his bike and rode away swiftly.

“Khan has prior criminal cases registered against him, and an investigation is ongoing,†the police said.

Meanwhile, talking about the on-field activity, Alyssa Healyâ€s Australian womenâ€s team has qualified for the semi-finals of the ICC Womenâ€s World Cup 2025 and is the only unbeaten team in the tournament so far.

They will face the Protea women on Saturday in Indore, with the winner finishing the league stage at the top of the points table.

The semi-finals will be played later this week on Wednesday and Thursday in Guwahati and Navi Mumbai, respectively, with the final slated for Sunday in Navi Mumbai.

Two Australia cricketers were “approached and touched inappropriately” while in India for the Women’s Cricket World Cup, Cricket Australia has said.

The incident occurred in Indore on Thursday, the morning after Australia had beaten England, as the players were walking to a cafe.

Police in Indore confirmed a man has been arrested.

“We can confirm two members of the Australian Women’s Team were approached and touched inappropriately by a motorcyclist while walking to a cafe in Indore,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.

“The matter was reported by team security to police who are handling the matter.”

Rajesh Dandotiya, additional deputy commissioner of police (crime) in Indore, told BBC News Hindi: “The accused followed the women players for some distance and kept passing lewd remarks.

“He then moved his motorcycle closer… making inappropriate physical contact. The accused was identified through CCTV footage and arrested.”

Australia are playing South Africa in their final group-stage match of the tournament on Saturday in Indore.

Devajit Saikia, honorary secretary of the BCCI, said: “This is a deeply regrettable and isolated incident. India has always been known for its warmth, hospitality and care towards all guests.

“We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards such acts. We appreciate the swift and effective action taken by the Madhya Pradesh Police in apprehending the accused. The law will take its due course to ensure justice is served.

“We will also review our existing safety protocols and strengthen them further, if necessary, to ensure such incidents are not repeated.”

Two players from the Australian women’s cricket team were reportedly stalked and molested on Thursday in Indore, the venue for their 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup clash against South Africa.

As per a report in Times of India, the incident occurred when the players were returning to their hotel from a cafe on Thursday morning.

A bystander succeeded in noting down the motorcycle number of the suspect, based on which an accused named Akil Khan has been arrested.

“Khan has prior criminal cases registered against him,” a police official said.

The players immediately alerted Australian team’s security manager Danny Simmons of the incident. He contacted the team’s local security liaison following which a vehicle was arranged for the players.

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered later on Thursday evening.

Australia are slated to play South Africa at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore in what is their final league stage match at the 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup on Friday.

Alyssa Healy and co have already qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament and are currently placed on top of the points table with 11 points in 6 matches.
